Since there isn't much to talk about regarding this game.

Is it okay to mention that the game on ESPN just made my day?

Should the Mariners take a chance that Kotchman continues to hit well?

He has little trade value right now — if he has a scorching July, we may be able to get something of value back for him. Is it worth playing him to see if that happens?

He crushed it for like 20 games.

After a pretty good showing at the end of last year. He could definitely use some time down there.

He was rushed this year

…they should send down Huntington & Nutting, because they aren’t ready, either. - royshowell

He was rushed last year too.

I don't think Kotchman has trade value.

Branyan had marginal trade value, and he’s actually a ~2.5 WAR player. Kotchman hasn’t been that good since 2007.

Granted, maybe GMZ will get the Royals to do something stupid, but Kotchman’s on his 4th organization in 3 years. Any competent GM is just going to wait until he’s DFA’ed or the end of the season (when he ends up on the curb waiting for Large Item Pickup) rather than give up anything useful for him.

I'm pretty sure that Smoak is going to be their 1B in 2011 no matter how he plays the rest of this year.

Even "nice fellows" like the Trail Blazers are, to a hombre, proud, competitive, and dripping in masculinity.

If he stays hot for the rest of the month, he should have some trade value.

One of the best defensive 1b in the game with two straight months of good hitting? That’s something a playoff team could use.

I'd like to see Kotchman learn to play 3B

His range (RngR) at 1B is better than Kevin Youkilis’s in fewer Games and BIZ. His UZR/150 is higher too.

Not sure if he has the arm for it or if there’s really the chance to try to get him to learn a new position at this point, but if he could be an average 3B, that would be an interesting option.

No, not a joke, but not sure how feasible it is either (especially this season)

It just seems like as a great glove, mediocre (at best) hitter who can only play 1B, Kotchman’s career will be very limited.

At least if he learned to play 3B, he’d have a better chance of sticking around.

With 12 man pitching staffs, I’m not sure how many teams can afford to carry a 1B only, poor bat, bench player. With some positional flexibility, he could stick around for a while.

And if you need a LH pinch hitter to hit a ball on the gorund….
