Al lright! Everyone back on the pile! Wooo! Playoffs! Disregard that the series was at home and that we got to use both Felix Hernandez and Cliff Lee and that we won one of the games in part thanks to an umpire mistake. Playoffs!
In actual good news our starters went 7.2, 7.0, 8.0 and 8.0 innings this past four game series. That was a really nice gift they gave the bullpen with 13 consecutive games left to go in this stretch. All things considered, I'm calling that Felix's best start of the season and getting him back into 2009 form would help alleviate some of the pressures on the offense. Cliff Lee is in peak stride so having those two pitch back to back the way they just did gives us a lot of winnable games.
Too bad about Erik Bedard. He's still not even back to throwing bullpens yet so you can imagine the time frame that he still have to overcome.
Fri Jun 04, 19:10: Ian Snell vs. Joe Saunders*
Sat Jun 05, 13:10: Doug Fister vs. Ervin Santana
Sun Jun 06, 13:10: Jason Vargas* vs. Joel Pineiro
Not that Doug Fister or Jason Vargas have been unimpressive this season, but this is certainly an uninspiring stretch of pitchers to run out there against a divisional foe that we badly need to reverse the latest trend against. Then again, neither are their pitchers. Joe Saunders again? Thanks, Anaheim! And hey, the return of Joel Pineiro.

I can't tell you how long I've been waiting for this since post...
Well, yes I can. Since we one yesterday. This is the most excited I’ve been for a series in awhile. Even if we do have to see Smell tonight. Let’s get some W’s.
Since we won* yesterday.
I guess I mean “Lets get some O’s” Hmm.. anyways, Im just excited to talk about the Mariners today.

If we can win tonight it'll be HUGE
I always feel like anytime we win with this turn in the rotation it’s a bonus. And not losing the momentum we’ve got after last series would be awesome.
Sounds like RRS will be starting tomorrow in place of Doug Fister.
Shoulder fatigue, per Matt Pitman.
Wow, I thought it sucked to be going to tonight's game and having to watch Snell...
Now it seems like I picked the right night to go!

Sonuva...
Lose tonight, RRS gets bombed tomorrow, and Pineiro gets 20 GBs on Sunday and panic will return.
Looks like a road map south of the tropic.
Last series was fun though!

I think you're all overreacting a little bit.
Fuck the Angels
The drop from Fister's performance to RRS's performance this year is massive.
And dead arm is often just that, but sometimes it’s actually a worse arm issue. I’d say we’re reacting appropriately.
FUCK THE MARINERS!

It had better not be anything serious.
I would hate to miss out on any jokes about how Fister’s arm is just tired.

I know that RR-S has not pitched nearly as well as Fister, but RR-S is not an automatic loss.
Fuck the Angels
Well, I hope he does well.
And at least Fister is probably not as bad off as Brett Anderson.

We need to not freak out until we have all the information.
Fuck the Angels
The way he's been pitching he is an automatic loss.
Didn’t look much better from the bull pen.

It's okay, our offense will pick us up.

Son of a bitch.

Right now I'm dreaming of Carl Crawford. Maybe next year...(or this year at the trade deadline)...
Tonight is going to be another painful game,
whether or not we win or lose.
Am I reading this right?
I’m still new around here, but given the numbers I see under Vargas’ name – is it safe to say that he’s not just pitching over what his numbers would predict; but rather that he’s pitching wayover what his numbers would predict? I mean, everyone says he’s got good “stuff” (and the overall K rate kinda reflects that), but the small spread in velocity between his pitches and the overall GB of just 30 – eeewwww!
…Or am I not catching some of the meaning in the numbers?
It's on the standard scouting scale of 0-80.
So 50 is above average. 45 is… I think that’s considered average. Both of those are not bad. His GB rate isn’t that good because he’s a flyball pitcher. It’s not ideal to be a fly ball pitcher, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s a bad pitcher. Some really good pitchers are flyball pitchers. They just tend to be a little home run prone.
...and now I'm here
20 - 80 scale means 50 is average...
Two ways to “prove” that 50 is the middle:
1) Its the same as a 0 – 100 scale, you’ve lopped off the same amount at both ends.
2) 50 is equidistant from both the maximum and minimum values: 20 + 30 = 50. 80 – 30 = 50.
And that’s the extent of Maths for me on a Friday as I head over to Safeco Field!
Yeah, that's true.
I don’t know why I thought it was 0-80. Still, the point stands on ground balls.
...and now I'm here
Yeah, Joe Saunders is fucking brutal to watch
But facing him does come with an upside. He’s terrible, and I like watching our offense when it works.

Yay! Langerhans!
BUT TUI WHY GOD WHY?!?!

I see what you did there.
His glove worries me more than his bat, though.

I don't have much of a preference between Tui and Kotch at this point
Kotch’s glove is awesome but he hasn’t got a hit in what feels like weeks. Then again neither has Tui. Neither contributes enough for me to care. I just wish we’d put Langerhans at first, Saunders in left, Bradley at DH.

Tui has been even worse than Kotch offensively, minus the defense.
I’ll take Kotch.

Since the beginning of May, Kotch has been worse offensively
And Tui has been posting a .405 OPS in that time.

I don't get Kotch
Swing looks good. Stance looks good. Maybe he needs Lasik or something because he rarely gets good wood on the ball and he swings at some ugly shit.
by Kenneth Arthur on Jun 4, 2010 5:39 PM PDT up reply actions
But that's a tiny, tiny difference
And Kotch has been worth 2.3 more runs on defense this year.

I'm aware that Kotch is better.
But I’m not particularly sure why people scream bloody murder over Tui and not Kotchman (some exceptions).

Kotchman has at least shown he can be an OK major league hitter in the past
Tui continues to get starts despite never really showing anything at the ML level. That’s what bothers me

Aren't you a ray of sunshine!
It’s so stupid but it cracks me up when the opposing team hasn’t posted their line up yet in those pics.
Mike Scioscia as a rule does not post his line up until the very last minute.
I'm not as bad as all of you.
Pretty much.
He doesn’t want to give the opposing team any information that may give them some sort of advantage or allow them to make decisions based on the roster choices by having the lineup in their hands any earlier than he has to give it to them.
I'm not as bad as all of you.
Nah their just hitting Saunders in every spot in the line up then throw in someone for the ninth to win it on a dinger.
I don't want to achieve immortality through my work... I want to achieve it through not dying.

Good.
It stands for limiting BB but that would be kind of wordy. Cliff Lee is an 80. Sean White is probably a 30.
