6/23: Open Michael Pineda AAA Debut Thread
We'll obviously be having a game thread for the Mariners as well, but this is a big night for the AAA affiliate. It's a 7pm start. You probably should've bought tickets. Morons.
Curto's preview:
The only glitch I can find on Pineda’s stat sheet is his left-right splits. He held right-handed batters to a .162 average and only four extra-base hits in 154 at-bats, but lefties managed to hit .300 against him with 10 extra-base hits in 140 at-bats. Salt Lake has some good veteran left-handed batters in Cory Aldridge and Michael Ryan, plus switch-hitting prospect Hank Conger is a much better hitter from the left side. This is going to be interesting.
Divish's preview:
So why the call-up? The 6-foot-5, 243 pound Pineda needs to face a different type of talent.
At Triple-A, there are players with major league experience and consequently major league plate discipline. That will force Pineda to be more exacting with his command.
“That will be his biggest obstacle is the major league plate discipline a lot of these Triple-A players bring on a daily basis,” Grifol said.
Salt Lake is the Angels' affiliate in the PCL, so consider this a minor league version of Felix vs. LAnaheim. I hate you, Salt Lake Bees. I hate all bees.

Unless you hate men
or are interested in seeing the most creative and painful way to kill someone.
I think when people are being funny, they are actually being serious and when people are being serious, it's actually really funny.

I wanted to say that Scott Patterson is just as dour in person
and that he’s like Jamie Moyer if Moyer were unable to grimace anymore, but then in the eighth inning they started playing YMCA over the stadium speakers and Patterson made a little M and laughed to himself and now he’s my favorite pitcher in the Rainiers ’pen.

Curto mentioned to me that Patterson is actually quite delightful in person
and that everyone with the Rainiers found it hysterical that he’s so misleading in photographs.
