So Jack Wilson's back, at the expense of Matt Tuiasosopo. Exchanging Matt Tuiasosopo for Jack Wilson is one of the only ways to get excited about Jack Wilson.

Also, Ian Snell cleared waivers and will go to Tacoma. I thought he might get some attention on account of his lively arm, but the more I considered it, the more I realized there wouldn't be a point in claiming him, since he's both bad now and a free agent come the offseason. He's not even an interesting reclamation project anymore.

Baseball's a funny game.

There’s always a chance “the other team” could surprise! I’d stayed tuned this afternoon, Robert, just in case! =)

Fuck that shit.

The Mariners are ALMOST as boring as soccer right now

Dave: RRS was pissed after his last start.

Blowers: Well, he’ll just have to pitch better.

Dave swore?

I didn’t think the old man had it in him. Then again, he is old and probably close to death

At what point do we start to abandon the idea of Milton Bradley on this team next year?

I’m not nearly at that point, but if he continues to struggle, I can’t see us retaining him at DH.

by Fuckmikereilly on Jun 20, 2010 1:22 PM PDT reply actions

He's had hardly any at bats and just now has gotten going

I don’t see him being removed unless he hits like Kotchman or has an incident

by Poochie on Jun 20, 2010 1:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Any chance Snell could turn into an effective reliever?

I know it didn’t happen this year, but it’s hardly a radical idea and Seattle is hurting for relief arms.

by John Morgan on Jun 20, 2010 1:28 PM PDT reply actions

It doesn't matter anyway.

We’re not going to pick up his $7 mil option for next year. He’ll be an FA at the end of this year then.

Commercials on MLB.TV annoy me.

If you’re going to show me commercials, at least show me the normal Seattle ones. I couldn’t care less about this Yahoo crap.

It's mostly mixed feelings

Everybody is waiting for the other shoe to drop and for him to revert back to his 2009 season. A lot of “yeah, he’s doing well but you know he’s just going to suck something fierce come the second half.”

by scottg02 on Jun 20, 2010 2:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Umm..

Of course Ichiro will be there. Cliff hasn’t played enough. Felix hasn’t been quite good enough to be an All-star. Fister won’t be in the AS game, not well known enough.

by M'sFanatic on Jun 20, 2010 3:57 PM PDT up reply actions

....

Felix is second in the league in strikeouts, 17th in ERA, 10th in FIP, and 6th in xFIP. By what metric has he not been good enough? Cliff Lee is 44th in the league in innings pitched and will probably move up into the top 30 or so by the All Star break.

If any team was ever going to go on an insane streak of winning/luck, it would be this team after what happened the first 2 months.

by Maury Povich on Jun 20, 2010 2:54 PM PDT reply actions

Process!

- Mariners go on big winning streak.
- Cliff Lee is credited with said winning streak.
- Other GMs see how valuable Cliff Lee is to team.
- Zduriencik states case that our team is winning because of Lee and it would be awfully difficult to trade him.
- GM offers nice haul for Cliff Lee.

Trade value improved!

by Droid Rage on Jun 20, 2010 3:07 PM PDT up reply actions

I can't fault him for letting RRS go back out there with a shutout.

These games aren’t important and he needs to regain some confidence.

by Aaron Campeau on Jun 20, 2010 3:09 PM PDT up reply actions

I wasn't necessarily faulting Wak

It was probably the right decision because RRS really wants to go deep into ballgames.

That being said, he was noticeably tiring and I could just see this coming.

by Fuckmikereilly on Jun 20, 2010 3:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Look at a strike zone plot.

He was all over the edge of the zone. A lot of those were 50/50 calls. Even those last two walks were questionable.* Was he brilliant? No. But he really wasn’t bad. He was actually pretty good.

*Not wrong. Questionable.

by harkening on Jun 20, 2010 3:10 PM PDT up reply actions

And only two strike outs.

Also 49 balls to 57 strikes. He was not really that good today.

by Droid Rage on Jun 20, 2010 3:11 PM PDT up reply actions

4.13 game FIP versus 6.14 on the season.

5.57 game tRA versus 7.51 on the season. This was not horrendous. Not even close.

by harkening on Jun 20, 2010 3:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Let me put it this way:

Among SP with 50+ IP (Hyphen falls into this category), a 4.13 FIP is almost exactly league average and is below the league median. This is a good start from a #5 pitcher who was getting squeezed.

Not to encourage such thinking, but

the ’95 Mariners were 13 back on August 2

by Malcontent1 on Jun 20, 2010 4:09 PM PDT up reply actions

The point is that this team sucks and that one didn't.

Also the Mariners have to leapfrog three teams. The Rangers, Angels and A’s all have to fall apart.

by Aaron Campeau on Jun 20, 2010 4:34 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm sure this won't be read, but

Since when does this team officially suck. Before the season we were all saying this was an 85ish win team, since then we’ve mostly had a lot of bad luck and under performance. Since the beginning of June, Bradley, Lopez, and Figgins are playing more like they did last year (which was all we expected of them) Cliff Lee, Doug Fister, and Jason Vargas have all been better than expected, and Felix has rounded into shape. The only real crap showings has come from Casey Kotchman, who’s fairly easy to replace. Once again, I’m not saying we’re going to do it, or even that it’s close to likely, just not impossible and that it’s OK to have hope.

by Malcontent1 on Jun 20, 2010 10:42 PM PDT up reply actions

It's also not impossible for a meteor to strike Yankee Stadium.

I’ve hoped for this to happen for many years, preferably during a Yankees-Red Sox game.

Also, playing like an 85 win team the rest of the way doesn’t even get us to .500. At this point, they have to play like a 100 win team the rest of the way to get to 85 wins. The Mariners aren’t that good.

by eponymous_coward on Jun 21, 2010 12:15 PM PDT up reply actions

I'd like to see us get to .500

Worrying about the playoffs before that point is stupid- let’s worry about the necessary and sufficient condition first.
