Do I Even Need To Write This?

For the longest time, we've been saying that umpires, sans instant replay, have the potential to ruin something really important. And tonight, Jim Joyce changed history.

It's time to move forward. It's time to make things better.

Absolutely awful.

The only guys in the world not allowed to look at the replay are the guys who need it most.

I wonder if Jim Joyce changed his mind about replay tonight.

According to Jon Heyman

Joyce is one of the best umps in the MLB. This is horrible. I used to believe that there was a need for a human element. Not after this.

Right now I'm dreaming of Carl Crawford. Maybe next year...(or this year at the trade deadline)...

Completely and utterly unacceptable.

Okay anti-replay crowd, you have no more ammo. It finally happened. The human element of the game that you hold so dear blew a perfect game and cost a player his shot at history.

He lives in the NW too

Apparently lives in Oregon but not from Oregon.

I'm actually sick to my stomach right now

I cannot believe that happened. If that had happened to a Mariner pitcher I might have gone postal.

Seriously, I'm completely disgusted.

I have no interest in watching baseball right now, knowing something like this can happen.
Absolutely unbelievable.

This was always possible!

Where you have been? What sport have you been watching?

by Matthew on Jun 2, 2010 6:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Seeing it actually happen is completely different than knowing it possibly could happen.

I watched a perfect game today and an MLB employee took that away from me for no acceptable reason.
This angers me.

Well, I think I see what Joyce saw

It looks like the ball is coming out a bit of his glove when he catches it.

Also, when he made the call, it looked like he was going to call him out but changed his mind at the last second.

by barabuski on Jun 2, 2010 6:07 PM PDT reply actions

It's not like he scooped the ball off the ground

There was no bobbling, the ball obviously didn’t drop out of the glove. Unbelievable.

by jwolf0 on Jun 2, 2010 6:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Ugh.

That was absolutely horrifying to watch.

Somebody important's death

If Joe Mather would have died that wouldn’t have taken precedence, but if Pujols would have that may have

Yup, my bad

For whatever reason, thought I was on/Jeff had posted this on the SBN homepage.

Or, if Pujols retired.

At least Griffey’s was expected.

I was listening to the Detroit audio feed on my iPhone At Bat app

The announcer thought that he was out and went nuts with his call, and then went even more nuts when he realized that he was called safe. It was actually pretty entertaining

George Brett got his Home Run back!!

The Royals eventually won the “Pine Tar” game. All be it nearly a month later, none the less there is a precedent for this just not from Selig. So while he’ll never have that true “Holy fuck I just threw a Perfect Game” celebration it should at least be added that he is now the only pitcher in MLB history to have thrown a 28 out Perfect Game.

This is why baseball is the best sport on the planet...

not because it is great some umpire missed a call and cost some dude a perfect game (can you name all the people who have thrown perfect games? probably not), but because, like life, baseball has a habit of hitting you in the nuts some times. It is unfair, unjust and can be downright cruel. For this, I applaud you, baseball.
