More like an inverted W now.

That spells Trouble.

With a capital T.

And that rhymes with P and that stands for pool.

This is a weird one

I think he’s the longest tenured player ever that I don’t really have a strong opinion of- I guess I like him, but just barely

He doesn't quite have the dumb charm of Yuni, but he's also not a horrible player.

Like?

I used to hate him,

but his play at thrid base has converted me to see his usefulness.

Servicable defensively, has some offensive skill, horrible approach at the plate.

Meh. We could definitely do worse.

I was indifferent to him until he was slotted with the uncomfortable role of replacing Beltre

And given how admirably he’s performed in the field (him batting fourth and sucking is mostly his fault, but some of Wak’s too), he’s earned my respect.

I like the Loafer.

I have been wondering about this lately

Lopez has come up with the Mariners, he started when he was 20, he’s in his 5th full season with the major league club, has never missed significant time… Usually this would give him a loyal fan base regardless of numbers. Hell i love Luis Sojo and Felix Fermin, but of course they were here in good old 1995, and we felt close to guys like that and Joey Cora and I’m not sure what their WAR would have been but Im sure Lopez is more valuable. That being said, he’s never been to the playoffs, he can’t draw a walk, and it feels like when I watch him bat, rarely does something good happen.

Based on all of that I keep wondering.. if somehow Jose Lopez managed to play in Seattle for 10 more years, would we even love him then? I just doubt it and if we do, it would make me question my Dan Wilson love.

He was supposed to be a star.

He’s not and he’s annoying in his average-ness. Not fair, but there you go.

Really unfair.

Considering he was ranked behind Travis Blackley and Clint Nageotte in 2004 by Baseball America and he’s been an above average player and has yet to hit his “peak” you’d think we would appreciate Jose Lopez.

And even I’m sitting here right now saying.. I don’t.

by Kenny Knows Sports on May 4, 2010 12:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, he's been average-ish.

And some of the blame has to be on him. This is what Jose Lopez looked like in 2005:

He’s also a really dumb hitter and doesn’t have the power to make that less frustrating. It’s not like he doesn’t have the talent to be better.

by Aaron Campeau on May 4, 2010 12:44 PM PDT up reply actions

He's been worth 4.8 wins the last two years. I'm not saying he's spectacular.

But considering how hard it is to make it in the major leagues, even top 100 prospects (I’m not sure which systems had him ranked highest or where he might have ranked if he didnt lose eligibility around 20, 21 years old. But he was 38th and 70th on BA I think in 2003 and 2004. Not yet “elite” status for that system, but perhaps other people had him very, very high.) then I think its important to recognize that its a big accomplishment for anyone to have a long career in the major leagues. It appears Jose will play 10+ years in the league if not quite a bit longer than that. Consider where Triunfel was as a prospect two years ago and where he is today. Where Halman was as a prospect and how he’s fallen.

I agree that there’s a lot to not like about Jose Lopez, I’m not really a fan myself, but its still kinda odd because while he hasn’t met OUR expectations, I would say that he has far surpassed what we should truly expect from 19-year-old prospects because oh so many of them fall by the wayside.

That picture is very telling.

I know there’s the mid-20’s “growth spurt” at the very tale end of puberty, but man Loafie looks positively fat, not bulky and powerful, compared to that picture.

Wait, there's a mid-20s "growth spurt"?

Sweet, I have a scapegoat for my recent weight gain!

This is one poll where we need another option.

We need a “I don’t really like Lopez but I feel sorry for him” option. I think fans are to hard on him and expect him to be a different player than he is. I’ve always felt bad for him.

by drm1125 on May 4, 2010 12:13 PM PDT reply actions

I've recently moved from indifference toward Lopez to liking him.

He took one for the team in learning a new position, seems to be doing well, yet remains annoyingly stubborn in his approach at the plate. At the same time it’s kind of endearing because he manages to be decently effective while being an idiot.

by Teej on May 4, 2010 12:25 PM PDT reply actions

For people who voted dislike or hate, can anyone explain the reason?

Is it a performance thing? Is it a approach thing? Is it that you view him as a below average fielder at 2B or 3B (even though the stats don’t agree with your observation)?

by CMC_Stags on May 4, 2010 1:44 PM PDT reply actions

I like Jose Lopez

Cheap contract, is playing 3rd base remarkably well considering he has been playing it for 2 months, and he has soft hands.
