PrintAnd, with the polls closed, the results are in. Observe in the following, sortable! table. Average is a simple 5/4/3/2/1 calculation, where a higher number is good. Assuming the individual or entity in question likes to be liked. Who doesn't like to be liked? I wonder if Rob Johnson likes to be liked. I don't want to give anything away, but in the event that Rob Johnson likes to be liked, then I have bad news for Rob Johnson.
Some things to keep in mind:
- These results do not reflect the opinions of the Mariner fan base. These results reflect the opinions of the LL readership, and a small but not entirely insignificant number of trolls.
- Ryan Langerhans and Michael Saunders were excluded while Jack Hannahan was included for some reason, but safe to say Langerhans and Saunders would've scored well. Off the top of my head, I would guess that Langerhans would score around 3.8, and Saunders would score around 4.0.
- These polls ran over the time period between April 30th and May 7th. Opinions may have changed with subsequent performance.
I like how Griffey shows up between a middle reliever, a manager, and a starting pitcher who hasn't thrown an inning. Also interesting to note how much higher Adam Moore comes in than Rob Johnson - while Moore has been worse, Johnson's been more exposed, giving him more opportunity to embarrass himself.
Anyway, I don't think there's anything real surprising in the table, but it's nice to have some quantitation. Ability is obviously the biggest determinant here, but far from the only one. I'll leave the rest of the interpretation to you guys.

I know for me, assume for some others,
the “like” or “don’t like” thing is not a prediction of future performance.
In other words, as a fan I could like a player while at the same time my prediction of his future performance could be replacement level.
What do you have against lemur turds?

The other interesting thing is to see the readership fluctuation by day/time and, I assume, the taper due to people being bored with polls.

It looks like the numbers of voters trailed off quite a bit for the second half
Which gives the trolls a little more significance.
I would guess Wakamatsu's score would be significantly lower if you re-ran his poll now.

What I find most interesting is:
A. Fister is the least-hated Mariner
B. No one gives a shit about Colome

Discounting the players with a high "No Opinion" %
I find it interesting (but not necessarily surprising) to see who’s a “polarizing figure” (i.e. a good split between the positive and negative totals).
Lopez (36% pos, 37% neg)
Sweeney (25% pos, 58% neg – prior to the hot streak)
Even Griffey to a limited extent (65% pos, 25% neg; not a super-even split but the biggest split among the lowest 10 “no opinion” vote-getters)
Figures you might expect to be polarizing but aren’t:
Bradley
Wak (unsure this is true now; but it was at the time of the poll)
Bedard (for all the crap he got his first stint here)
Bedard was pretty well liked amongst the LL community

I enjoy how it sidestepped the "YouTube problem"

It would be interesting to see the fan’s opinion of the front office separate of Jack Z. The Lincoln/Armstrong duo has as much to do with the construction of the team as anyone.

How else would you explain
the cut in payroll from last year, a lack of moves for offense after the Lee trade, the resigning of Griffey and the insistence (until a few weeks ago) to play him? I cannot believe that Jack Z is completely autonomous from a meddling CEO and/or President. I think it’s unfair to lump him together with them.

The economy is bad and attendance was way down, there wasn’t a lot of talent available on the market, the front office thought he could still be useful in a limited role, Wakamatsu is bad at talent evaluation.
People would love to blame Lincoln and Armstrong because it makes Zduriencik’s failings less worrisome, but based on their decision to hire him, his public statements and the way last season unfolded, there isn’t enough evidence for me to believe that he is being hampered significantly.
I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that there was a major nudge from Lincoln/Armstrong to bring Griffey back, but that’s not a significant enough factor to claim that Zduriencik is too hamstrung to evaluate his performance fairly. I would wager that almost every other GM in baseball has to deal with a similar level of meddling.

Milton Bradley is awesome.
He dislikes idiot fans and most of the media, he gets unhappy when people taunt him for several hours, he has a short temper, and he behaves as if he believes a lot of people have it in for him. The first two of those things I not only sympathize with but support, the third is not at all uncommon, and the fourth is probably not his fault. Also, he has now recognized the last two and is making efforts to work on them. He’s can hit, he gives great interviews, and his smile can light up a nunnery. What’s not to like?

There's probably a fair amount of backlash involved in the voting,
But he can still hit, and in a city known for rain and apathy it’s nice to see a guy who’s both talented and fiery. And he directs that fire at opposing teams/fans instead of threating to, say, grab someone by the neck. Ya… there might some “at least he isn’t …” in there too.

I think it's pretty genuine for the most part.
But it’s hard to forget about the mountains of people coming here trying to “warn” us about the “Milton Bradley experience.” This makes some of us want to root for him more because having those same people show up and say “we told you so” would be very annoying.
The more I see and read about Bradley the more I enjoy having him around. He has his issues. He knows he has issues. He’s at least trying to get them sorted out. Plus he’s still quite talented at Baseball.
I’ll never understand how anyone could vote hate, or even don’t like for Ichiro…it boggles the mind!

I feel very lucky to be able to watch him play everyday.
I love that Jose Lopez keeps finding hilarious ways to be exactly average no matter what he does
this year, it’s awful hitting and great defense, and in the polls, it’s by having a perfect bell curve of responses from the community
