Roster Moves
Per Stone and Divish (I'll let them fight it out for who won).
- Matt Tuisasosopo demoted
- Eric Byrnes released
- Ryan Langerhans up
- Josh Wilson up
- There will be another move announced to clear up a roster spot, as neither Langerhans or Wilson were on the 40-man (probably not a big one, but we'll see)
Steps in the right direction. If nothing else Langerhans can help us when we get into extra inning games, and we now have a backup shortstop who can actually play SS.

Three, actually
DFA Colome for Tui or Hannahan, White down and Kelley up

I was reading about how upset Byrnes was after Friday night's game.
The human side to baseball must just be crazy. You invest so much mental energy into a team, only to find yourself no longer a part of it less than 48 hours later.
That said, this is a step in the right direction.
Well considering the fact he rode a bicycle away from the stadium on Friday; I can't imagine he has many assets to get rid of up here.

He has reason to believe he is more valuable than Sweeney or Griffey.
"Why did he run when I was going to throw him out?"
- Ichiro Suzuki
Well, yeah, real high bar.
My cat’s probably more valuable than Sweeney or Griffey in that he won’t frickin’ ground into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded.
My cat has a tiny strike zone and would hope for a walk.
The only bad part is that he walks away from home plate unpredictably and can’t hold a bat.

I don't think this change makes us better.
If Griffey is still our starting DH against RHP, Langerhans won’t get any more playing time than Tui. This basically installs Sweeney as the perma-DH vs LHP.
Langerhans -> LF, Bradley -> DH, Griff/Sween on the bench
Though you’d need an emergency outfielder if Bradley is DH. Hm. That doesn’t really work. Still the only way I see a big improvement through this move.
angels fan in seattle
It's the logical/smart thing to do, but Griffey isn't going to be benched until all his bobbleheads are given away.
Can't say why, but I don't see him putting up that big of a fight about it.
He supposedly signed as a bench guy, no?
angels fan in seattle
I don't think they're going to give up on him for a while, they still think he draws fans to games (and are probably right).
There are soooo sooo many Griffey jerseys and Griffey signs and Griffey shirts at games.
Now all we need to do is get rid of Sweeney and we'll be on the right track.
That said I’m a little bit nervous that the move is going to be dumb again.
There's going to need to be one more 40-man move to make this work.
As Dave points out, Bendynose to the 60-day DL?
I'm sure teams have asked about him,
and the Royals are easily the dumbest FO in baseball if they’ve responded with anything besides “Hell no.”
Read what you wrote...
And then realize why we all think that this could happen.
Good news!
The Royals do in fact have the dumbest FO in baseball.
Dave says:
Pretty decent chance Sweeney is DL’ed by Tuesday – they just didn’t have his logical replacement in house, so they have to go get him first. I expect some kind of minor trade.
Alex Gordon!
Except Drayer says...
next move will not be a 60 day dl move
then…
most likely not on the 25 man roster
So I find any move involving Sweeney unlikely (outside of a 15-day DL maybe).
FUCK THE ANGELS!
by Fuckmikereilly on May 2, 2010 8:16 PM PDT up reply actions
No it still makes sense
Someone needs to get cut now because we’re over our roster limit, probably a minor leaguer on the 40. But when we go out and get the Sweeney/Byrnes replacement he will need a spot, so that’s when you put Sweeney on the 60 day DL.
Sure
And we’ll throw in a Michael Young.

We're hoping the ChiSox put in...
…a waiver claim on him this summer, and we can let them have him.

You should give Dayton Moore a call.
He did wonders for us last season.
Yup, Shannon Drayer says another move will be made tomorrow to open up a 40th spot on the roster.

No.
He pitched today.

And considering Ricky Orta had TJ earlier this spring...
I’d say he’s the obvious 60-day move, but Shannon could prove me wrong.

Wak was messing around. That's why this happened.
by abender20 on May 2, 2010 7:44 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
Most of my brain wants to believe this as well, a little stubborn part is holding out hope it's not entirely true.
It’s kind of hard to give up on Wakamatsu, and if all of this is due to his mismanagement then there’s more stormy weather down the road. His bullpen decisions alone are making it difficult to stay positive about him, stoic demeanor, etc. notwithstanding.
I like how he (outwardly, anyway) appears to handle his players. I get the impression he does the people part quite well.
It’s up to Jack to make sure that the roster in such a way that Wak can’t mess anything up.
When is Hannahan gonna be ready?
These are kinda like lateral moves. We still have no depth on our bench. I would rather have Tui and Hannahan up than Sweeney and Colome.
by niceguysfinishlast on May 2, 2010 7:45 PM PDT reply actions
That's true
It would be better if one of them was an OF. Tui can play some OF I guess….who do we have in AAA that would be a good OF backup?
by niceguysfinishlast on May 2, 2010 7:47 PM PDT up reply actions
My point is it would be nice to have a 2nd backup OF
If Bradley is the DH and Langerhans in LF, we dont have any OF backups anymore
by niceguysfinishlast on May 2, 2010 7:52 PM PDT up reply actions
Saunders should stay in AAA, and he isn't hitting anyway.
You really don’t have any other major league options.
angels fan in seattle
What is he hitting? .137? Something like that.
And no HRs again.
ignacio
Should be back soon
And once he is Tui is redundant. I would rather have Hannahan and a new RH LF
What's with bringing Josh Wilson up?
What’s his upside over Tui, especially considering how little Tui played? Or do we just have fetish for having lots of people named J Wilson on the 25 man roster?
Thanks.
I hope so, Josh Wilson is a downgrade from Tui as a backup at every position other than shortstop.
Hannahan, at least, is obviously better everywhere.
It's not necessarily true, no
It’s just overwhelmingly likely to be true for second and slightly less overwhelmingly likely at third. Tui is not a good defender at any infield position.
by Graham MacAree on May 2, 2010 8:02 PM PDT up reply actions
I guess it just depends on how much you believe Tui's bat vs Wilson's.
And how much you think the difference between Tui and Wilson is at SS defensively relative to their difference defensively at 2B, 3B, and 1B.
I don’t think it’s a huge difference either way, however, and I’d rather have Byrnes in LF and Bradley at DH against LHP than Bradley in LF and Sweeney at DH. That’s why I think the move totally is a wash or negligible difference.
My belief that Josh Wilson is a much better defender than Tui has nothing to do with his bat
by Graham MacAree on May 2, 2010 8:07 PM PDT up reply actions
Oh, I agree that Wilson is a much better defender.
I just think the gap between Wilson’s glove and Tui’s glove is smaller than the gap between Wilson’s bat and Tui’s bat at the 1B and 3B positions.
Just because you have a Tuiasosopo fetish doesn't mean he's actually good
by Graham MacAree on May 2, 2010 8:10 PM PDT up reply actions 2 recs
I think Tui will hit for like a .305-.310 wOBA at the major league level.
I think Wilson is closer to .270.
That's interesting, seeing as Tui has hit better at every level at a much younger age.
What would you project them at?

I kinda feel bad for him.
He was terrible at baseball, but I had fun watching him. I’m pretty sure he snorted a line of meth every time he came out to pinch run for Jr.
I will always appreciate a player that gives everything they have and goes all out like that.
It’s still a business and you have to produce so I agree with the move, but I don’t have the outstanding hatred for him. Liked the guy, the effort, but that’s not always enough.
He didn’t do himself any favors though with his Pull Back.
Yeah, the Pull Back was bad, but
he didn’t get enough ABs to be tossed just yet. He was entertaining. Plus, he’s better and/or has more potential than Sweeney.

Byrnes being swapped out for Langerhans was too obvious.
Tui has hardly been the worst of our problems but it was a roster construction problem that is now solved.
I will not be satisfied until Sweeney is replaced by an adequate RH hitter. Doesn’t even need to be able to play defense (though an OFer would be great).
FUCK THE ANGELS!
Sounds like Dye.
If we do go that route I sure hope he is cheaper than what has been floating around and then what do we do?
I’m guessing we don’t go after him though as there is still a logjam at DH with Griffey.
Dye can't play outfield, I doubt his ability to hit, and most importantly...
he’d cost too much money. If by some miracle we could get him for like 1 mil while dumping Sweeney, I’d consider it.
FUCK THE ANGELS!
by Fuckmikereilly on May 2, 2010 8:21 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah I agree. I know he can't play outfield.
He can still hit for more power than anything we have though I believe.
