I forget why I know this

but that song is actually called The Telephone Rag. That existed prior to the cartoon. They wrote Michigan Rag for it I think. Another old song in that cartoon was The Great McCloskey’s Fight. Which is racialist, yo.

I primarily use select > color range and the modify selection dialogue to get the basic shape.

Then I quick mask (q) as needed to clean up the edges and finish off by selecting the content (ctrl + click on the layer in the layers palette) and apply a very small feather and a 1 or 2 pixel smooth.

For something like that picture it takes about 5 – 8 minutes to get a decent cutout.

The back story I like to give them is as follows: It’s the bottom of the 8th, these two guys spot their prey without a mate. Peroxide Blonde Giant and Drunken Adult Pig-Pen descend from their cheap seats right after this lady’s dude has gone to the bathroom. Now they are negotiating a salacious three-way as a last ditch effort.

Peroxide Blonde Giant: “Let’s go man, I got the ice cream. We’ll look like we bought the same thing. It’s our in!”
Drunken Adult Pig-Pen: “I bet she smells like red gummi bears.”
Peroxide Blonde Giant: Would you put down the damn beer, you’ll scare her off."
Drunken Adult Pig-Pen: “No way, she’ll have to take me as I am.”

What luck, she’s into it.
