Free Baseball @ Safeco on April 10th
Alright, so as a few of you noticed, last year I shamelessly self-promoted a high school baseball game for the Varsity team of the program I coach with. Well, I'm doing it again because it turned out really well last year (and I think one or two of you showed up), because my post last year didn't get removed and because it's free. Soo, here's my pitch for this year.
FREE BASEBALL for those interested in getting a head start on everybody else to watch a live game at Safeco Field, April 10th at 4:00pm the Mercer Island Islanders will take on one of the best teams in the state, the Eastmont Wildcats (Wenatchee). Come and get your seat at the field, because let's face it, this is one of the few chances you can sit behind home plate and not have to fork over and arm and a leg for the ticket price. Did I mention the price of the game is free? The only thing you'd have to pay for would be parking at the garage ($5) or food (I think they will have a stand open again this year). It's high school baseball, yes, but the ping of aluminum sounds great in Safeco once a year and the game is sure to be exciting. It may not be 2010 Mariners quality baseball, but anything better than 2008 Mariners baseball is good enough for us, plus, you won't have to pay an absurd ticket price to see the game.
Oh, and it's FREE!!!!!

...You pay for parking at the garage for $5
Nothing else other than that. Oh, and you adopt a puppy while you’re there
How many class rings will it cost me to get in to this game?

Damn.
Wish I could be there, but I won’t be back in the States yet. Go Islanders!!!
Who are we playing anyway? And how does the team look this year? MI isn’t really known for their baseball, but maybe that’s changing with the LLWS youngsters.

You went to MI?
Anyway, we’re playing Eastmont from Wenatchee. I hear they’re pretty strong again this year, like #15 in the state or somewhere around that. The team is looking pretty good this year. We have a kid being looked at by CWS, Pittsburgh, Houston and another team from back east, I wouldn’t be surprised if he is drafted. But other than that, it’s a really high scoring offense this year, we put up 13 on Mt. Si and 21 on Sammamish. Overall, I’m really impressed with what they’ve done so far this year
Nice. Yeah I went to MI.
Sounds like MI baseball is getting stronger. That’s good. While I was there I don’t think I even knew who was on the team.

Also,
is MI going to be playing at Safeco every year? Or is it something they were selected to this year and last?

This is the 3rd year we've done this, but it's a year to year thing
We’re looking at alternatives next year because it’s like $8,000 to play, but we make that back in fundraising. I wouldn’t be surprised though if we go back next year.
We’ve really been pushing baseball on the island for the past few years and the talent that we’re getting each year is getting better and stronger. It all starts with development in Little League and just keeping the kids focused and away from soccer and lacrosse. Each of those sports still have great turnouts, but I feel as if we’ve been able to keep more kids just by supporting the Little League on the island
A friend of mine is in town Friday night
So basically, drinking is on the agenda, but if I’m feeling human by 4pm, this actually sounds like a lot of fun…

Well before first pitch I would hope
In years past we’ve played the early game at 12:00, and there was usually a game right after us to be played at 4pm. I think it would be safe to say gates will be open before we even get to the field.
Thanks for putting up this post Fuzz, that was a good time.
Coming from a single A H.S. (less than 300 students), I’m always surprised at the level of talent major school systems can field. I can recall taking the plate against a guy that threw harder than 80 MPH just once in four years, let alone with movement. Couple of comebackers up the middle were cringe worthy, you mention aluminum bats and visions of guys in comas flash through my mind.
I was a little dissapointed with the turnout, but it was pretty fun overall
If you take away the first inning by Eastmont, it was a pretty good game otherwise
I don't know anything about high school baseball
But are HS fields as big as Safeco? If not, do they set up closer fences, or just play pitcher duels?
Yes, a lot of fields have dimensions that are close to Major League size
Our home field is 302 down the lines, 330 in the alleys and 410 to center. Granted the fields are shorter in the power alleys, it’s done for a reason so that kids can have a shot of putting one out. I want to say that the only field that’s up to Major League standards as far as dimensions go is Bannerwood Park in Bellevue. I want to say that it’s 320/380/395 there, but Seattle U. also uses that field as its home field too.
Boo.
I completely spaced this off, even after talking about it to several people. I couldn’t go to the one last year because of prior obligations, either. I am 0 for 2, and a bad person. :(
