Also, we’re making Cellular look like the Colosseum

To answer that idiot's question about how many Opening Day starters have been converted to relievers, I can present one:
Brett Myers with the Phillies.
That was phlawed logic then. It still is now.
I'd sleep at the Internet, but I've found servers don't make for good pillows.
Smoltz had to do with him coming back with injury, and it's quite arguable that he wasn't the number one starter for the Braves at any point he was there.

Eric Byrnes and Bobby Jenks may be the douchiest looking batter-hitter combo in baseball
Determined, Jonesing Commentor
Why? Wilson would have scored easily
He was halfway to third when the fan touched the ball. By the time Jones reached the ball, Wilson would already rounded third and headed for home
Because normally the ump won't make a judgement call and stop the runner at 3rd.
If you are ever in Safeco and this scenario comes up. Grab the ball.

I know that he’s a pretty good reliever by rational evaluation, but it seems like every time I actually WATCH him close, he is always trying to tightrope his way through the 9th inning.

He's done nothing professional to deserve holding out and trying to make the most money possible.
I hate players like him.
He has every right to maximize his earning power.
Players get absolutely fucked on value until their first free agent contract and a lot can happen between signing and free agency. It is entirely possible his rookie signing bonus is the only big paycheck he will ever get.

Yeah.
Fuck making a few million dollars a year to play a game!
I find it interesting that people expect professional athletes to accept less than their fair market value
by Aaron Campeau on Apr 24, 2010 4:04 PM PDT up reply actions
Do you think Longoria signed the contract because he thought it was fair market value?
I imagine he and his agent, given his priorities, thought it fit Longoria’s needs and desires. There was no invisible hand at work here. Longoria chose to sign it because he felt it fit him, which suggests that raw economic value wasn’t his chief concern. This means it was not the prime factor in his decision-making process.
There are any number of values to the contract for Longoria. He likes the organization; he feels he doesn’t need gobs of money personally, and is happy to play the game; he has decided he likes living in Florida. Or he has a personal moral dilemma with the size of MLB salaries. I don’t know, but the reality is a human is making this decision, not a machine.
I don’t have a problem with athletes seeking “fair market value.” I get annoyed with the booing of A-Rod here in Seattle. He was offered gobs of money, and he took it. Good for him. But to suggest Longoria was “raped” while making millions of dollars all the same? When he chose to sign it? Sorry, I can’t buy that verbiage. There were other factors in his and the team’s decision.
That is not at all the impression I got from your first comment.
And while I agree with parts of what you say, Longoria is making far, far, far less than his fair market value for a very long time. That’s unusual.
by Aaron Campeau on Apr 24, 2010 4:14 PM PDT up reply actions
It's pretty amazing, I'll grant.
But, personally, were I in his position, I’d probably sign it, too. Maybe he likes the simple life. I just don’t know. I know I personally don’t have any great ambitions of millions of dollars. I’m content with being upper middle class. And even league minimum throws a player into the top 3% of earners.
I just find it weird that we are surprised when athletes do this. It’s like we have this underlying expectation that everyone is out for the money. Technically, even Ichiro signed a lowball contract. His value versus earning on Fangraphs is 2:1. People aren’t raw economic computers. They don’t calculate the break even point. They have different values and expectations.
I think he knows how much a million dollars actually is...
“And knowing now that I’m pretty much set for life, that’s just very assuring to me,” Longoria said. “The money is one thing. … What I wanted was to be set and just worry about going out and playing the game and winning.”
And I got fucked when I got my first full time salary job out of college I guess?
When I graduated college I could do everything I do now and I make at least 20k more than when I originally started.
I do not feel bad for any baseball player.
I'm not saying you should feel bad for him
I am saying that thinking negatively of him for seeking fair compensation is bizarre.

Kotchman came up big, clearly proof that Wakamatsu’s Belief System works and slotting him down in the 6 spot is a stroke of genius. Tomorrow he should bat 8th, to take the pressure off him even more, and maybe he can go 2 for 4.

Come trade deadline I hope Z works some magic to get us some more offense.
Without crippling us elsewhere hopefully.
Good luck :(
Who needs a trade deadline?
Rational roster management with the pieces we have available in Tacoma can give us a boost right now.
Like who? No one is exactly tearing it up in Tacoma right now.
Besides Josh Wilson.
Yeah that would work.
I just see it highly unlikely for now.
Shame.
Is there any history of a manager not using his closer in parks that are a terrible match for the type of pitcher the closer is?
I mean, something about this didn’t even surprise me at all. After he walked that guy I just braced myself for it so much that I didn’t even react to it with the typical anger. I mean, the ball is flying out and it’s the home run guys in the order. I’d love to see a non-flyball pitcher out there with the two run lead. Managers don’t want to destroy the confidence of their closer, but damn it if putting him in a position to fail doesn’t kill confidence. The guy just isn’t the same with short walls, he gets less aggressive some times. For good reason, too. The guy gets fucking shelled deep.
