A new jazz fusion band I've run into

On the music topic, I’m not actually thinking ahead far enough to involve going to shows because I’m about to enter the time-suck which is finals and will last me two and a half weeks.
On the plus side, The National made The New York Times, and they’re streaming High Violet in the same article. The bad news? I’ve heard two songs and have found myself suspicious of the songwriting. Get back to me in a few hours on this one….

Okay, I've listened to High Violet now.
Two songs that made a strong impression on me were Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks and Sorrow, but those just stood out as being positives, and I don’t think there was a clunker on there. I even found the much labored-over Lemonworld to be palatable, even though the NYT made it seem like they were embarrassed to have it on the album.
It gets the JY stamp of approval, I think. The lyrics were better than I thought they were going to be, it manages to capture a very specific mood, and I’m not crazy about it, but definitely want to listen to it again, which in my experience is one of the strongest endorsements as things I want to listen to again immediately and incessantly I end up discovering are shallow and worthless. I kind of miss Padma Newsome and wonder if this particular sound isn’t borrowing a bit from other large acts, but I think I like it better than Boxer.

I've held off on listening to the whole thing so far,
but I might have to dive in when I get home. For me the lyrics are always obtuse, but after a while take on a Yorkian profundity that’s kind of hard to nail down. I apologize for typing “Yorkian profundity,” it’s too late for me to go back now.

It's about right.
I’d probably come up with a different term for it, as I think that Berninger’s lyrics are a little more symbolic, but strangely more grounded in rather specific situations, whereas I look at most of what came out of “In Rainbows” and think “I would not allow this shit to fly were you not Radiohead”. Of course, back in the OK Computer era, I think you’re closer to being right. I can see a “Karma Police”-like concept filtering into Berninger’s work.

Perhaps Mono with the Twilight Sad @ Neumos on May 11? I wouldn’t mind going to see the Red Sparowes and Caspian next Thursday, but if it doesn’t work out, I won’t cry about it. Also Unnatural Helpers with Tacocat @ the Funhouse in late April (I think).
Frightened Rabbit play on a rather strange bill with Maps and Atlases on 5/16, so maybe that’d be my pick. Can’t really imagine those two together, though I like both of them.
"looking forward to" might be a bit of a stretch
but Poison Idea are playing in Portland tonight, at the East End. I’d like to think I’m still into them, but my musical tastes have evolved so much that I’m kinda nervous that I would go and then dislike them.
Next week Eddie Spaghetti is playing a solo show at Dante’s, on Wednesday. People mock the Supersuckers, but I’ve always loved them and Eddie puts on a good solo show – say what you will about ironic faux rock star attitude, but dude knows how to play a good country show.

I've seen the Supersuckers and/or Eddie Spaghetti more times than I've seen my own parents
and they’re always awesome.
I guess it's a good thing I finished up this weeks project 2 days ago. I wasn't planning on doing any actual work anyways.
Oh and Maiden in two months!

I never listened to much Devin the Dude
I think I mentally lumped him in with all of the down-south garbage I loathe. Just got into some of his stuff, and hey it’s pretty good! Really creative, mellow, he sings his own hooks, comes across as kind of a humble guy which is pretty rare in rap. I haven’t got his new one yet, but he has quite a library.
I think you're the last hip hop fan in Seattle to start liking Devin the Dude.
Just weird that he’s probably more popular in Seattle than anywhere else.
Honestly, there is so much garbage in rap it is hard to winnow out the goods some times.
I was unfair to Devin and for that I apologize.

Not a shot at you, I mean, I'd never heard of the guy
But he kept doing shows here (despite being from Houston or wherever), and he got so much press…. I guess the credit here goes to the Stranger, who talked him up consistently since at least 2005-6 or whatever.
I’m not a big hip hop guy, but I finally listened to some of Devin’s stuff and I enjoyed it. I just think it’s a weird situation, where one city far removed from his home town (geographically, culturally) turns into a sort of home base for him.
It is funny, but it does kind of make sense.
Introspective, creative, humourous and humble are adjectives I’d associate way more with Cascadia then Houston.

I've liked him since I first heard him around 2000 (I think?), but I've never had an album.
I always thought of him more as the funny guy featured on other people’s songs. I should seek out some albums.

Shows coming up in May and June after finals, Of Montreal, Beach House and Blitzen Trapper. I’m excited for all of them, I’ve never seen Of Montreal or Blitzen Trapper live before so I’m hoping for good things.

I had to make myself stop listening to new The National online.
Before I’m sick of “I’m afraid of Everyone” and “Bloodbuzz, Ohio” before the album even comes out. I’m more pumped about High Violet than I have been for any album in quite some time.

It’s going to be sick because it’s at a tiny, tiny little venue that only holds a couple hundred.
That would be an awesome show.

in DC on Monday night. I’ve great floor seats are few rows back and given how infrequently they tour, I think it should be a good show.
The following night at the Black Cat – Frightened Rabbit. Color me excited for those two evenings.
Phoenix should bring it.
They ruled hard when they were in Seattle last. Total pros.

Dosh is coming to Portland (Mississippi Studios) on May 8
He’s the drummer for Andrew Bird but has a great solo act… mostly a combination of instrumental drum and rhodes-melody post-rock/experimental-ish sound. I really dig him and his new album is pretty great, and he does everything live and looped, by himself or with another person so it sounds and looks pretty neat.
