He gets credit for being a good prisoner and is let free with just time served and a stern warning.

WOOHOO!
7 run inning last night, then finding out your #2 starter’s suspension gets dropped? Good day.

Just being reminded that the M's have a pitcher dominant enough to make Lee a 2 makes for a good day.
I think when people are being funny, they are actually being serious and when people are being serious, it's actually really funny.

I think you're missing the point
noontide is saying that Cliff Lee is awesome and the sheer fact that we have someone better than him makes him very happy

I'd rather call him...
our 2nd #1. Happy Day!
Although good on MLB for not obstinately sticking to their stupid decision out of some refusal to admit they fucked up in the first place

MLB did something right?
There has to be something else going on.
Or they saw Z’s shiny head and… well, all bets are off after that.
Everything is Rob Johnson's fault.

I think if RRS and Fister turn into awesome, we automatically lose.
4 of a kind is a great hand but 5 of a kind is cheating.

When's the last time MLB suspended somebody for something that happened in a practice game?
The whole thing was asinine.
by pdb on Apr 20, 2010 10:49 AM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
It's like they decided that because Lee was actually injured that his retaliation was okay.
Which is stupid.
What would make more sense is the realisation that since Lee’s on the DL the M’s could just activate him 5 days early and let him serve the suspension like that, so the whole thing was pointless.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.
Or it's like they saw Clifton Lee's honest, smiling face in the teleconference and decided his retaliation was okay
Which is awesome.

I like to think that there's a little Patrick Bateman hiding behind Cliff Lee's wholesome facade

Yayyyy
Now just stretch out so we can get Snell out of this rotation!
The singing is by the Avalon Boys, led by Chill Wills as their bass singer
before he became a fine character actor.
This is good news and all
but wouldn’t the M’s have just activated Lee from the DL a few days early after his last rehab start, as clearing a roster spot is as simple as designating Colome for assignment?
Yes, but we'd have to go with 24 guys for the length of the suspension.
Thus allowing the 6 man bullpen to blow up again, like during the first week of the season.
by doublemazaa on Apr 20, 2010 10:40 AM PDT up reply actions
and also
This also allows us to not activate Lee until we’re sure he’s ready.
Otherwise we may reactivate him a few days early, have him serve his suspension only to find out he’s not quite ready, and then have to juggle the fact that he’s no longer on the DL but still can’t pitch.
by doublemazaa on Apr 20, 2010 10:44 AM PDT up reply actions
the decision to activate him would be made after his last rehab start
so that is not an issue.
A six-man bullpen is not really a problem, but if there is an emergency and the bullpen gets taxed in the interim, option Sean White (or Vargas or Fister if they lose their rotation spot) down in exchange for a fresh arm. The optioned player only has to stay in Tacoma for 10 days.
Oh no, Sean White went away!
the travesty!

No, I think all three have at least one option left
Baker looked at this before the season, and none were listed as one of the players out of options with less than five years of service time.
Fister is easy — he was not added to the 40-man roster until last year.
White was first added to a 40-man roster in 2007 when he was a Rule 5 pick and then was outrighted after 2008 and re-signed to a minor league deal before the 2009 season. He should have at least one, if not two, options left.
Vargas looks like he qualifies for the Wlad Balentien memorial fourth option since he made the majors so quickly after being signed (and then missed 1+ years on the DL).
I'm so glad we've re-named the fourth option after Wlad Balentien

a pleasant surprise at first
that ultimately turns out kind of pointless

Well it kinda does. Felix Day followed by Cliff Day is like a Mariners wet dream
Felix Day followed by RR-S Day followed by Cliff Day is kinda meh.

That is actually a great idea
Have him come in to close some games like Randy did.
Err not the Cubs
Al Yellon was saying it would be a good idea.
May 2nd is currently scheduled to be Felix Day
So if they insert Lee there, they push back Felix one day. Or of course, they could move Felix up one day with all the off days coming up and simply skip Vargas on the 1st or Snell earlier on that week.
Figuring out where to pitch Cliff Lee in the rotation is an amazingly awesome problem to have.
Everything is Rob Johnson's fault.

He may not have Felix’s electric stuff but he is hardly a quack. I declare nemesis upon you, sirrah!

Are we far enough into the season and the arrival of a fresh crop of posters
that we should have some sort of OT post about etiquette and expectations and whatnot? Seems like it might be time for a refresher.

We also have Erik Bedard...
…and the Orioles have Adam Jones, a couple good prospects, and had George Sherrill. So it does matter. Also, some here follow minor leaguers and are interested in how they’re doing even after they’re no longer M’s.

It is very very early
Gillies has struggled in AA. Aumont has struggled in AA. Juan Ramirez is still in A-ball and doing whatever.

This trade has allowed me to stop pretending I care about Ramirez.
You can be obsessed with a guy’s arm all you want, but if the results aren’t there…

I am really interested in how Aumont does
Because the Mariners saw him as a reliever at the time of the trade, while the Phillies saw him as a starter, obviously a huge gap in value between those two. Aumont becoming a legitimate front/middle of the rotation starter would probably justify the trade from the Phillies perspective.
