4/19: Weekly Open Baseball Thread
Cause we need a thread to talk about non-Mariner games without dragging other threads off-topic. And I need a place to talk about Bill Hall playing center field for the Red Sox.
Holy crap, Bill Hall is playing center field for the Red Sox.
Speaking of which, Red Sox have been getting clobbered by the Rays (8-0 right now) and look to be well on their way to a 5-game losing streak with a record of 4-9. See, even good teams struggle!
Meanwhile, in the division this week. The A's get to play the Yankees and Indians. Rangers get the Red Sox and Tigers (catching the former at a great time). Angels get the opposite, Tigers and Red Sox. The Mariners of course get the Orioles and White Sox.

A graphic I made just out of interest while I was working on my final project for my Sabermetrics class
Yes, I know WAR is the best, I know the problems with ERA and ERA+, etc., but I think its still an interesting visual nonetheless. Each point on the graph is the ERA+ of the MLB leader for the last five years (i.e., a point in 1970 at 145 would mean that as of 1970 the league leader in ERA+ from 1966-1970 had a 145 ERA+). Minimum 900 IP over those 5 yeas.

Its pretty subjective: determining the best starting pitcher ever
Basically I’m using three categories, best single year, best five year span, and best overall career and letting the reader choose which criteria they want to pick depending on their definition of ‘best’. I was going to try and do something cutting edge using Pitch f/x and lots of new data, maybe try and make something predictive, but in the end I decided it wasn’t worth the effort gven the nature of my class (AKA the teacher hadn’t heard of FIP prior to this semester).
Man, Mordecai is such a rad name
This graph is pretty nifty. Pedro Martinez was pretty good, eh?

You could also argue that the average pitcher during Pedro's prime wasn't as good.
2010 Safeco Field Record: 0-0 ; Overall Safeco Field Record: 10-4
Pedro's 2000
- all time in K% (34.8)
- all time in K/BB (8.88)
- in opponent’s AVG, OBP, SLG (.167/.213/.259)
- in WHIP (0.74)
- in ERA+ and FIP+
The only real knock is the amount of innings
Threw a simulated game last Friday
51 pitches, no problems. Throwing another one tomorrow for 65 pitches.
I think he was getting at the suspension.
They had the hearing almost a week ago, decision should be known now.

And yeah, it should be, but they're taking their sweet team I guess
Might be something later today after they sat on it over the weekend but that’s just conjecture.
I think they are waiting for him to come off of the DL
and maybe even make a start, so they can be sure that he isn’t “hurt” when taking the suspension.

I dunno, they said a decision would come "promptly" so it's weird that we haven't heard anything yet
Also above was supposed to be “taking their sweet time*” obviously.
Very white.. and very douche-y.
Hung out with him a lot in college, can’t imagine that having money is going to make him any more tolerable.

I'm convinced that 90% of all college baseball players are douchers.
Based on the sample size of my school’s team.

Growing up I was a bat boy for a rookie league class A team, so it was the first stop for all the newly drafted college players.
If you ever wanna create the biggest douchebag ever, give a twenty year old athlete a million dollars.
Except for Prince Fielder and Lyle Overbay, all the high round picks that came through were complete asses.
God, I can't imagine my roommate with a lot of money.

Is there baseball on now?
Why isn’t there baseball on now?
In the age of digital media, this is inexusable. Screw team revenue, convenience for local fans, and scheduling. I want there to be at least one MLB game in progress from 9 AM PST – 10 PM PST. We can do this. We have the technology.

Seems like his velocity is down a little.
Also 4 straight balls to the first batter. Yikes. C’mon Brandon.

I think most people around here were fed up
with his “I want to start, I want to close, I want to start, I NEED to close, kidding, I lied, I want to start again” thing.
At least it bothered me.

What he wanted was never the issue. He's a kid who needed responsible guidance and consistent coaching.
He didn’t get it with the Mariners. Sadly, he appears to be just another piece of collateral damage from the Bavasi years.
Eh, I was annoyed, but he clearly has talent.
I want him to to be successful I guess. I’m pretty much ambivalent though.

Nah
I want to see Morrow and Clement both do well. More Morrow than Clement though. Morrow, when he was firing that fastball was pretty awesome to watch in relief.

I wish nothing but misery upon him.
It’s completely irrational but he was inconsistent, tantalizing as hell and always sucky enough to remind of who we could have drafted instead of him.
Finished:
7 IP
8 SO
2 BB
3 H
1 R (1 ER)
90 pitches (64 strikes)
8 groundball outs (2 double plays)
3 flyball outs
Hey, remember when we kept Ian Snell as a 10x costlier investment? Good times!
Whatever. He did the same against the Yankees.
Whatever. He did the same against the A’s.
Snell and Morrow have identical problems (control, “headcase”) and similar upside (#2 starter). Snell is due $4.25 million this year. Morrow is under club control and still making league minimum.
Yes those were the only other two times he wasn't completely shitty
I’ll believe he’s good when he keeps doing this, not going to freak out over one start. And I did not like the trade either.
Why the hell are the Cubs and Mets wearing 42 today?
Are they requiring every team to wear it once at home or something?
Pineiro's looking like he has every intention to fuck us ragged
when he comes back to Seattle.

I know it sounds pretty stupid..
But how does signing bonus work for the draftees? If Ackley signed with the M’s with 7 Mil signing bonus, what is this supposed to mean? Is it a part of his salary, or is it like a merit-based bonus?
Can we please get Rob Johnson out of this ballclub?
by Ef the yankees on Apr 20, 2010 12:01 AM PDT reply actions
Per Cot's
he’s getting a 6M signing bonus which may have been paid entirely up front or paid out over time, as is often done, but either way it does not count against the team’s payroll. He’s also on a ML contract which means he’s making league minimum even while playing in AA and I think he gets a good bit more if he reaches the majors soon.

Ichiro has 6 walks and is on pace for 69.42
Would be a career high by a fair margin except for ’02 when he had 68.
Will he keep his patient approach at the plate? If he can keep his BA around career norms and work the OBP north of .400 that would be sweet. Probably not likely though.

He's hitting over .300 in April.

Carlos Zambrano is the Cubs setup man
and Carlos Silva is still in the rotation.
I think the Mariners won the trade by default with that move.
So with the UZR updates, Ichiro and Frabklin have gotten a boost.
I don’t understand the adjustments that Dave Appelman made, but whatever. Whoooo!!
Franklin Gutierrez moves from being worth 5.9 WAR to 6.1 WAR with a 31.0 UZR and a 29.0 UZR-150. Since 2002, only Alfonso Soriano in 2007 mainly as a LF (-5.3 pos. adj, 32.3 UZR, 37.7 UZR-150) and Cory Patterson in 2004 (CF, 24.3 UZR, 30.0 UZR 150) bested Franklin’s 2009 in either category. Of course, I should be using the 3-year feature on Fangraph’s leaderboards if I want to be more rigorous, but meh for now. Yay!
Ichiro also got about a 0.7 or 0.8 WAR bump in his 2002-2010 WAR total, I believe, and his 2004 season went from 6.9 WAR to 7.2.
I'm quite surprised at Soriano.
Didn’t know he was that good in the outfield.
