I was not around for this game

How did Snell look? Three run homer to Cabrera and 4 walks don’t look good, but that doesn’t always tell the whole story. . .

I've seen little reason to be encouraged by Snell so far.

Which is shame because I want to like him.

How much longer can we expect the Ian Snell experiment go on?

Especially if Vargas and Fister continue to pitch well and the return of Lee/Bedard

I don't know.

He’s apparently sick and somewhat bereaved, which usually means for a no-hitter in the case of most, just not ours. I wish he would throw more strikes. That would be dandy.

Ian Snell is perhaps irrational.

Except for the hating Pittsburgh part. That’s totally sane.

Doug Fister did it, why can't Ian.

Hard work never killed nobody, but I won't take my chances.

Yea

With our park and defense, walking batters is basically the worst thing our pitchers can do…giving them free bases. That’s why I think Fister and Vargas are better options for our rotation right now.

by niceguysfinishlast on Apr 18, 2010 6:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Absolutely. I'm tired of Snell's act. He has better stuff than Fister and Vargas

but he pitches afraid. He nibbles, he’s out of the zone, and he’s just a mentally fragile guy based on everything we’ve heard.

I just can’t watch him anymore. He’s the antithesis of what this team is trying to be. Wak’s belief system revolves around attacking the zone, trusting the defense, not walking guys, being agressive in all aspects of the game, and believing in your talents.

Snell goes out there and doesn’t exhibit these characteristics. As Drayer pointed out vs Texas, “he looked at the names on the back of the uniforms and the ballpark” and pretty much psyched himself out of that game.

I don’t want to watch him anymore. If Fister and Vargas keep pitching the way they have been, Snell should be the odd man out when Cliff returns.

I want real victories, not moral ones.

Not unless what follows doesn't really matter all that much.

I don’t think that we can afford one of those at the moment.

So there is a fanshot about the win expectancy change in a sac bunt

With Wilson and Ichiro on in the 8th and no outs was Figgins bunting a good call? My first guess is no.

What's the deal with corn nuts?

by BaronVonBullshit on Apr 18, 2010 4:34 PM PDT reply actions

I didn't like it

Figgins is good and left-handed, while the two following guys are right-handed. I don’t think it was egregiously stupid, but I wouldn’t have done it.

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 18, 2010 4:36 PM PDT up reply actions

At that point of the game I'm thinking I only have two real good hitters left to bat

in this game (Figgins and a scorching hot Guti) and I’m not having one of them give themselves up. Our win expectancy went down following that play and what’s even more annoying is that the pitcher had just walked Ichiro and we all know Figgins is tremendous at working the count and walking.

Just a wasted out in my opinion.

However, looking at the amount of men LOB by Detroit, and having seen how blah Snell was, I’m not all that bothered that we lost this one.

by Rudy4three on Apr 18, 2010 4:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, the only benefit I saw was avoiding the double play

but I would think the speed Wilson, Ichiro, and Figgins it wouldn’t be that hard to stay out of one. Would have rather seen him take a real at bat

by BaronVonBullshit on Apr 18, 2010 4:38 PM PDT reply actions

Note: he's by no means slow, but he's not a speedster by any measure.

He’s significantly slower than Ichiro and Figgins. He’s in the same category as Adrian Beltre, J.D. Drew, et al. Career speed score of 4.1. So, slightly above average, but strictly middle of the pack.

by harkening on Apr 18, 2010 4:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes, and trying to turn a double play on a slightly above average and top tier runner

or two top tier runners would be harder than if Wilson were below average. That’s all I was saying, I just would have liked to see Figgins not bunt

Wilson's no speedster

But I don’t know how you can double him up when he’s going to third and still have time to get Ichiro or Figgins.
