Mariners Captured In High Speed
One of my little pleasures in life is watching high speed video captures (which explains my completely irrational love of Discovery's Mythbusters and Time Warp). A few weeks ago I ran into a nifty consumer camera, the Casio Exilim FH25. The thing about this camera that caught my eye was the ability to take high speed video. Needless to say, I purchased it.
Below are several 400fps videos I took at today's home opener at Safeco Field. Obviously since this is a consumer-grade camera, the resolution isn't going to be nearly as nice as the stuff you would see in a science film. That said, who doesn't want to see Guti swing the bat in slow motion?
For the curious, I was sitting in the view box seats in section 320. I apologize for the shakiness of the videos. Trying to hold the camera steady without a tripod and at 20x zoom is rather difficult.

I thought Jose Lopez was Edgar Martinez...
I need to get some sleep.
Nice videos though!

I never noticed it before
But Guti’s swing looks A LOT like Richie Sexson’s swing.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.
That's a nice piece of hitting.
He gets his hands inside really well and shortens up his swing to get good power on a low inside pitch. That may be why this swing looked Sexson-ish. Big Ritchie had to do this with most pitches on account of being huge.
Dude this is great stuff!
I love high speed video too, I need to get this camera. You happy with it?

Thanks
I’m thrilled with this camera, though it’s a bit of a sticking point for real photo buffs. It’s one of those pseudo SLRs that’s not really a point-and-shoot but not really a true DSLR either.
I’m really happy with it though. The 20x optical zoom is nice, the still photo quality is above average for a camera in that price range, and the form factor is great. Dial in the settings right and still photos come out looking gorgeous.
That sounds like it may be worth it
I’ve been looking for a decent camera so I can run my own pictures next to my articles. I wasn’t aware there were even cameras that shot in high speed, I’ll definitely have to look into this…

As far as I'm aware Casio is the only company that produces affordable, consumer grade high speed cameras.
I had no idea there was even such a thing until I stumbled across a Gizmodo article about a month ago.
This is insane.
What this tells me is that Ichiro has really incredible control of the bat, Gutz seems to have a nice power hitter’s swing (?) and pitching is extremely violent.
Have you thought about going to minor league games to do this with some of our prospects because that would be pretty damn cool to see.
I actually live about ten minutes away from Everett Memorial Stadium.
Chances are good that I’ll head down there this summer to catch a few Aquasox games, so I’d be more than happy to get some video there as well!
Seeing RRS lock his right knee while throwing the ball made me uneasy.
I’d imagine that’s just his delivery style, but that looks like it might hurt.
Thanks for posting these! These videos are awesome.
Awesome. The only good thing to come out of yesterday's stinker of a game.
Is that the light at the end of the tunnel, or the headlights of an oncoming train?
These are great, Brian
But next time I demand HD quality, 1000 FPS video from a fixed camera position

Maybe, but the video would probably look like crap.
It was pretty hard to get these videos taken where the players are pretty much standing in the same place every time I hit record. To get a good shot the camera has to be as still as possible, which means I’d have to guess where the ball is going to be hit into play and set up before the pitch is delivered. The closest thing I could reliably give you is a shot of the first baseman as he’s receiving a throw.
Thank you for making Jeff look like a jerk!
It seemed like it would be too hard to pull off with moving people, too bad though a slow mo guti catch would be awesome.
So do you find yourself taking high speed videos of the most random things?
Because that’s what I would do if I had this camera.
Oh heavens yes.
Anything involving water is awesome in high-speed. I’ve got about 1.5GB worth of videos of water balloons popping.
I love when they do that stuff on Time Warp.
If I had this camera, I would do the same thing.

You might try an old windshield from a wrecking yard. M-80's don't have a lot of power.
Pop a few off just to make sure your camera would be safe. Might be a fairly inexpensive idea, Pull Apart lists one at $21.50
I have the same camera. Here was Griffey in high speed!

I fucking hate you Mariners

Ichiro's bad speed and control is amazing.
Guti, even in slow motion still manages to remain sexy

These are awesome
I’m thinking that maybe you should put some sort of watermark or copyright or something like that in the video so that others can’t steal it without giving you credit. Kind of like this maybe.
Aaron King is still my homeboy... iffy mechanics and all
McFAQ for all you newcomers out there.
Saw the post... thought it was dumb so I didn't watch.....got bored....so I watched it...
loved it… want to see more.
Maybe throw in a fan eating a hot dog with all the fixings next time.
I saw a Kelly Jennings INT.......really....
Thanks
I am a high school pitching coach in Texas, and these videos allowed me to do two things:
1. Show good examples of mechanics to my kids, especially to drive home the point of how far out in front big leaguers release the ball
2. Educate (brainwash?) my kids on the awesomeness that is Mariners baseball
