4/12: Open Game Thread, Part 2
1) I can't believe we're losing again. I'm starting to get worried.
2) We're winning! Nothing like a trip home to cure all conceivable ills.
3) Tie game! ooooh!

Is it just me...
or is this starting to feel like 2008 again?
I hope so, I really do
I’m just a fan who gets frustrated by not scoring runs. Duchsherer is good, but not this good.
Why did he do that on an 0-2 count?

Wow, thank you Dave Sims.
While you’re at it, mention a few other things that the A’s are doing bad at.
Okay I love you RRS but you really need to get your shit together.
Is that the light at the end of the tunnel, or the headlights of an oncoming train?
So, really: Astros level.
They win 1 in every 5, too.
No, 0-1
RRS threw that curve to make it 0-2. He threw it when the count was 0-1.
by Matt Erickson on Apr 12, 2010 5:07 PM PDT up reply actions
Yes it does.
Throwing a 72 mph curveball after a 72 mph curveball is incredibly risky. Not quite as risky as a 88 mph fastball on the inside corner, but still risky.
by Matt Erickson on Apr 12, 2010 5:09 PM PDT up reply actions
It was an 0-2 count when he hit the homerun
Which is what he’s asking about I think. It was a fastball in the upper right corner of the zone.
Do more of that!

If things go like they are, that should happen right about the time Cliff Lee comes back, which means Cliff Lee will get major credit for helping turn the team around…. etc.

Besides this game our opponents seem to have all their hits dropping too (fangraphs says .348).
My brain is trying to bargain with me that at least we’re getting bad luck out of the way first, then I remember that logically it doesn’t work that way.

MUCH worse.
This is just frustrating because the guys we know can hit good aren’t, aside from Franklin, and it’s not like the rest of the team is good enough to carry us.

Watch out for Pennington. I predicted 13-17 HRs for the guy this year. The ball really flies off his bat when he gets solid contact.

I don't think any amount of weight loss is going to help at this point.
I’d rather he come back as an obese fat load so fans have mixed feelings about rooting for him.
Will everyone please shut the hell up about Griffey
At this rate everyone on this team should fucking retire. At least Griffey almost gave it a ride there at the end. And he’s not Rob fucking Johnson. He’s got that going for him.
What I'm saying is if everyone is so concerned at the lack of hitting, please get pissed at EVERYONE in the lineup, not just Griffey.
Except for Guti.
But I don't expect everyone else to be above average hitters, and the ones I do expect to be above average have a track record of being good.
Griffey’s only role on this team is to hit, and there’s little evidence that he’s good at it anymore.
Most of the Mariners have spent time in the last decade not being a below-replacement level player.
Griffey, not so much. He’s had one good season since 2000, and everything else is varying levels of injured or garbage.
The only reason he has a MLB job in 2001 is he’s ZOMG JUNIOR, instead of Carl Everett.
by eponymous_coward on Apr 12, 2010 6:37 PM PDT up reply actions
Er, strike 2001 for 2010, and "below".
Is he the worst problem on the team? No.They are all playing badly right now, save Felix and Guti. But I think Ichiro, Figgins and others are tons more likely to bounce back a lot as opposed to Junior, since they aren’t 40 and fighting through a decade of injury.
by eponymous_coward on Apr 12, 2010 6:39 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
Well, yes.
Griffey is not good anymore. We know this. But the point is he’s had more than one good season since 2000.
Fangraphs has 2003 and 2005 as seasons over +1.0 WAR, and Smith’s WAR database has every season in that span except 2002 valued at over +1.
Alright, but he only played in 53 games in 2003.
Not exactly an adequate yearly sample.
I wasn't defending him; I was pointing out inadequacies in coward's evaluation.
I mean, it’s one thing to say “He was injured and would have easily outperformed that level” (and it’s probably true), but the truth is he didn’t and the injury affects our idea.
But then we have Rob fucking Johnson on this team, who can’t even produce 1 WAR in a whole season. The evaluation has to be taken in context. Is Griffey worth 2 million this season? Well, he’d need to be worth 0.5 WAR to hit that…so, probably not, but it’s believable seeing as his .230 BABIP last year contributed to 0.3 WAR (only 0.2 off his necessary production to match his paycheck).
Paying full value for a half a win player is bad
Because there are so many hitters capable of matching that available for the league minimum. He’d need to do better than that to justify the contract, and he won’t. Because he hasn’t for many, many years and is only going to get worse with age.
"I wasn't defending him."
What part of this statement do you not understand?
I don’t actually buy into the “In Z We Trust” mantra here and at USSM. Griffey signing, Sweeney’s continued presence, passing (albeit successfully) Langerhans through waivers, Rob Johnson…the roster construction in total is not something I like.
But like E-Lizz, who launched this sub thread, I just can’t stand the Griffey hate when taken along with the rest of the roster.
Griffey is annoying because he's one of the team's three worst hitters
and he’s slotted into a position where he is incredibly replaceable.
I'm quoting myself via USSM:
The Fangraphs leaderboard for designated hitters has Junior with a .347 wOBA over the last three calendar years, which is quite literally a league average DH when sampled over 500 PA’s.
He’s due for some regression. Will he be great? No. But he is not this team’s biggest problem on offense.
A three year average with all 3 years equally weighted is VERY misleading.
You’re discussing a 40 year old player who, as was pointed out, is sliding very badly downhill each year.
The reason Griffey’s BABIP sucks is the same reason Richie Sexson’s BABIP sucked: they both can’t hit any more.
The other problem is Griffey’s contribution is ALL with a bat. Wilson can’t hit, but he can field. Ditto Lopez and so on.
by eponymous_coward on Apr 12, 2010 9:07 PM PDT up reply actions
I am not picking on you, but people need to realize that a bell curve distribution is not the same as the straight line that straight up Win Value at fangraphs suggests
The closer you are to replacement level, the less valuable your WAR is, and the farther away from it you are, the more valuable.
Yup.
0-0.5 WAR players are figuratively a dime a dozen. A lot of random AAA players could come in and give .5 WAR over a full season. Hell, Princess Willie could be a replacement-level 2B over a year.

Hey, the conversations were going on simultaneously!
It’s almost like I was having a discussion with different people about the same topic! Crazy talk!
Understood.
Talent is in a bell curve, but payroll increases at a fairly linear rate once you hit league average.

There was no out to be made there, so if the next hit was a single or a double it’s probably an unearned run. If it’s a triple or a home run, it’s earned (he would have been at first regardless).

If people suck, we don't want them on the team anymore, the more people who suck you have on your team the less likely you are to win
Therefore, seeing people who suck remain on this team makes people angry, because we want to win. Those are the people who really get piled on (Griffey, Sweeney) and I don’t think it would be a bad thing to have that displeasure communicated to the people who run the team. If more people did it, one or both of them might not even be here right now.
Other times there are just frustrating moments in a game where people need to vent over a play. And sweet holy hell this team has been frustrating so far.
Personally I'm mad because the team is willfully not putting their best players on the field, and for an obsessive diehard fan, it is a frustrating helpless situation
When we lose in painful fashion, people tend to focus their frustrations on our worst players. I love Ken Griffey Jr., but he’s been beyond finished for some time now, and the nostalgia of him being in back Seattle wore off sometime back in 2007. I would hope he would retire with some dignity before it’s too late. Ken Griffey Jr. should not be remembered to a generation of fans as someone who should be booed when he comes to the plate, he shouldn’t be remembered as the guy who is literally the worst player in baseball.

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 13, 2010 12:31 PM PDT up reply actions
Because we support an organization and the team they put on the field to play baseball.
We want the Mariners to win. Certain players are not good at baseball, and therefore do not help the Mariners win.
And by “certain players”, I mean Rob fucking Johnson. And Mike Sweeney, but he’s such a swell guy that we don’t hate him—just his presence on the team.

Okay, I'm not saying Rob's brilliant,
but would you rather have Moore step in? Because that didn’t work out too well last week either. And if everyone weren’t so obsessed with the Kid then the M’s wouldn’t have brought him back in the first place. It isn’t our fault that most M’s fans are still living in the 90s. Sure, we don’t have a perfect team, but no one does. We need to support the players we do have because treating them like shit isn’t going to help them play better.

I still don’t think you quite understand how fandom works. When you care about a team and they do something bad, it’s upsetting. When you get upset, you say things you may or may not mean. When you say things you may or may not mean, they tend to come out angrily.

I openly boo Rob Johnson.
I openly turn to other fans and insist that Rob Johnson really sucks at his job. But when Rob does something right—like, I dunno, gets an XBH—I cheer. Why? Not because of Rob Johnson, but because it’s helping the Mariners.
I want the Mariners to do well, and by extension I want Johnson to do well. But I think the Mariners would do better with an alternative to Rob Johnson.
Why would we want our own team to be unsuccessful (Strasburg aside)?

We have a statistically insignificant small sample size with Adam Moore.
We have 3/4 of a season of Johnson blocking a clearly superior catcher in Johjima. And sucking at it. He can’t catch, he can’t hit (even if his .269 wOBA regresses toward league average, this tends to stabilize around 500 plate appearances. He’d have to hit .370—better than Ichiro!—over his next 200 PA’s to be league average).
Good God I’d rather have Adam Moore.
Catchers who are league average hitters are 3.5 WAR players

Johnson is not league average, though.
Nowhere close.
Which was sort of the point.
“Would you rather have Adam Moore?” was the question, with an appeal to his ridiculously small sample size of the last week. The answer here is “Yes, and here’s why: look, Johnson sort of sucks.”
