First Cactus Game with a Full M's Lineup IN PROGRESS (12:05 PST)
Since I have no way of getting updates beyond the box score, I thought I'd throw this up so people could follow the GTE and get a reasonably good idea of the game.
Here's Jay's game thread post on USSM, and here's the MLB.com live-ish box score as well.
Also, despite his deep, abiding attachment to the French Revolution (he often privately expressed wild, enthralled feelings about the French Revolution even after the Terror and the rise of the Directory), nothing alarmed Thomas Jefferson more than the prospect of France's repossession of the Louisiana Territory during the first term of his presidency. Jefferson called the Louisiana Territory "The one single spot on the globe, the possessor of which is our natural and habitual enemy." New Orleans was the port through which the produce of almost half of America's population flowed.
Although he probably hated the British more than any other prominent public figure of his time, Thomas Jefferson, in a message meant to reach French ears, even told the American diplomat Robert Livingston: "The day that France takes the possession of New Orleans seals the union of two nations who, in conjunction, can maintain exclusive possession of the ocean. From that moment, we must marry ourselves to the British fleet and nation."

ME!!!
Is there a GameDay thinger for this anywhere? I don’t know why I’m having such a difficult time finding it. :(
~I once gave Jose Canseco $15. ~
It's only the second inning and Halman has already struck out.
WOOOO BASEBALL

I haven't said he sucks yet, so I'm getting better.
I really to like Halman. I loved watching him his second tour of Everett. I just wish he wasn’t so volatile in his development.

THANK you.
I’ve been looking for it for a good 20 minutes now. I have no idea what I wasn’t clicking on, but thank you.

No idea.
They may be testing certain things or trying out new operators and thus aren’t ready to unveil yet.

Yeah it's never advertised during spring training
But it’s working way better this year than last. You can always find it by bookmarking that link and then replacing the gid= part with whatever the gid is from the live box score.

I guess because it doesn't work properly yet
Pitches are all classified as ‘unknown’ and it frequently lags behind the game.
Folks, it's 3:57 eastern standard time on the fifth of March, in year 2010 of our common era
And Garrett Olson still sucks.

Oh, no, no need to apologize
I know he sucks, yet I still like him. It’s me, not you. ;)

At your service.
Left-hander, from the Dominican, 23, added to the 40-man this past year, throws around 93, well-liked by the organization, but his strikeout rate is nearly twice versus left-handers as right-handers (12.73 to 6.34 last year) and he also doesn’t walk nearly as many. For these reasons, they pulled him from starting late in the season and his realistic future is as a left-on-left setup man because he has nothing to work against righties.

I can't believe you didn't post about that trade.
I was thrilled that he was out of the division, but also a bit sad that his price was apparently so low. We don’t need a lefty LF, but yeah, I was trying to convince myself that we should’ve made a run at him.
Maybe it was "past"
FWIW, Drayer said he had no chance at it. (Did not say Adrian wouldn’t have had a shot at it, however).
Hooha!

If I had any skill our resources at making .gifs, I’d make one of a spider crab stomping around Safeco and shooting lasers from its eyes.

We can have multiple rally crabs.
So long as we don’t bring back The Scary Crab, which would upset rc too much.

I don't know that this would be much better.
Plus, the crab sort of captures the right Mariners feel, I think. I don’t know any team that could lay claim to the spider aside from Cleveland, and I don’t know that they’d want to.

I didn't realize how many kinds of crabs there were in the Sound
by msb on Mar 5, 2010 1:50 PM PST up reply actions
Indeed.
One of my favorite activities as a kid was going to my grandma’s place across the sound and lifting up the largest rocks on the beach that I was able to and then watching tens and tens of crabs skitter about.
You only got a few types there, no Kings generally, but it was a lot of fun to me.

From the looks of it, that K pitch was further outside than a ball earlier.
If we are to trust Gameday.

Mutton chops made quick work of that inning.
Eleven pitches, no more than four in an at-bat, two Ks and a pop-up.

“Coleman no longer handles play-by-play duties, leaving Ted Leitner and Andy Masur to cover most of the radio broadcasting efforts for each Padres game. He does, however, still work middle innings as a color analyst. In the 2010 season he is expected to cut his broadcast schedule down to 20-30 home day games.”

He's not really a mystery guy.
Formerly of the Nationals where he made his MLB debut, and before that the Angels. Struck out a lot of guys in the Cal League from what I remember. Got hit in the face by a line drive July 26th. Minor arm injuries have hurt his stock over the years, but his stuff isn’t out of this world either, and he won’t strike out many. Decent fastball with average velocity, secondary offerings only about average.
Final line from the LVBP this winter

He looked like hell after that line drive
But seemed to heal quickly.
He was pretty much toast by the time he got to Tacoma last year; not sure what was up. Velocity seemed to be there, but he was getting hammered most nights. Probably played into his willingness to try something completely new.
Yeah, he seems like he never quite hit his potential despite moving up regularly.
He was really excited to get back into the game in Venezuela though, from what I heard.

During yesterdays (no-radio) game blog....
Drayer noted that "Niehaus in the booth talking with a Vancouver radio station. Talking about how his job isn’t a job and how much he loves it. “I’ll probably die in the booth for crying out loud.” He was in the booth next door visiting with Jerry Coleman. Hope we get him on the air for an inning or two with the guys. He is hilarious."

Fields vs. Tony Gwynn Jr.
Two quick strikes at the top of the strike zone, a ball that looks like it nearly bounced in the dirt, two more fouls at the top of the zone, another ball low in the zone, centered a pitch which was grounded to Ackley at second.
Hmm….

Spring Training helps you learn so much.
For example, our scrubs are clearly vastly superior to our actual team based on the results of the past 2 games.
I don;t want to hear that Mike Sweeney will make the decision hard on the Mariners at the end of Spring.

The pitch fx data show some signs of progress, but still not a lot of consistency.
Jon Garland, GB machine. What the hell?
Hey, WGN, when Jeff Russell's son is on the mound, you NEED to investigate if he's got his dad's pitchface.
This CF camera is NOT working for me.
If/when RA Dickey’s son comes to the majors, you think the director’s going to ignore the chance to investigate if pitchface is an inherited trait?
While WGN, for my money, has the best tv picture of any baseball network
Their spring training broadcasts have typically looked pretty terrible
Yeah, this is a bit tough to watch.
Of course, it’s still enjoyable, because it’s baseball.
Save for starting out the first two batters with balls
Cortes: not bad at all. Good news for us.

This is my favorite part of spring training broadcasts, amazing these guys have known each other for 50 years.
Not only is it great to hear Dave and Jerry having a chat
but they’re keeping Rizzs quiet too, which is always nice.
