Ichiro makes awesome catch in Spring Training (3/23) (With Video!)
That is simply ridiculous! Ichiro just defies everything. I'm still trying to figure out how he did that!

Don't get hurt!
Please, for the love of a god, don’t get hurt!
I feel like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football. Ugh
That's Our Guy
Yeah. He’s all ours. We get to watch him every time he takes the field.
Enjoy watching a Hall of Fame player, Seattle. That’s what it’s like.
Awesome. Would love to see that at Safeco
But I’ll settle for him climbing the wall in ways that defy the laws of physics.
Incidentally, Jack Wilson had a catch-and-throw yesterday that I think got #1 on Sports Center last night (I was in a bar and there was no audio, but that’s what it looked like). Anybody have a link for that?
He had a catch like that in Safeco, I think
He was playing CF. I remember him running and leaping into the CF wall and catching it over his shoulder…I think he knocked the CF door ajar a bit…is my memory playing tricks on me?

No, that happened. Smashed into a padded door in the wall, as he came down I believe.
I can’t remember anything else about it, but it gave a bit which might have saved him some injury.
Varitek tattooed a Felix pitch.
Still online. Still a freakin’ amazing catch.

I miss Ichi in CF :-(
With Franklin it’s no longer an issue, but he could have been so much better than whatever we rotated out there in ‘05-’06

I like that he had time to save his hat before he hit the ground.
...and now I'm here
I dont know if it's been mentioned before but Ichiro does not like to be seen
without his hat on during games. He’s made quite a few grabs where he’s protected his hat as he’s gathered himself and thrown the ball back in.
Oh right, I remember that
The somersault catch — FSN was using it as part of one of their promos for a while, but I remember that game.

And is it just me
Or was that a bonus Red shot in that vid too?

I got to be at that game too.
That catch was possibly the best I’ve ever seen. And after he hit the wall, he throws the ball back in to keep the runner from advancing before falling down.
Also a die-hard Hawks fan.

That is probably the last graceful thing we've ever seen Ichiro do.
FUCK ERIC BYRNES FUCK ERIC BYRNES!
Nah, he'll retire
At the end of the season in which he passes 4256 hits on this side of the Pacific.
That should be age 46 or so.
I read the article before seeing the catch, and it's a lot less graceful than I thought it was going to be.
But hey, still a hell of a catch.
TouchMyIchiro
Walls are thinner, so they represent no problem.
Unstoppable force hits movable object.
...and now I'm here
There was a play one time when Nick Punto barreled into Pudge Rodriguez in the Metrodome …
… which was the encounter of a stoppable force with an immovable object.
Punto left the game and went on the DL.

Love Wilbur's quotes
“He has GPS,” Wakamatsu said.
Asked what the hardest part in making a catch like that, Wak said, “I wouldn’t know.”
Really
I heard the Rizzs-jizz about this catch and then read about it online all day…Was waiting to be WOWED….and this is all I got REALLY? A un-Athletic over the shoulder catch where Ichiro falls down 3 steps later.
Wake me up when Death to Flying thing does something fun. This catch wouldn’t make a Griffey ‘89-’99 highlight film if it was 20 minutes long.
Wow. And people around here
Think I’m an asshole.

Yeah, that was completely non-athletic there.
You know, there are probably a million people out there that could make that catch.

Expectations are everything.
Seriously, If you think this looks easy, I’m going to take it as evidence that Ichiro made it look easy.
Go! Huskies!
When was the last time you made a catch like this?
When was the last time you’ve seen anybody make a catch like this?
News flash – it’s not 89-99 anymore.
While I've never performed it or seen players perform it in a ML game off
a ML bat, we used to make those plays all the time when shagging fly balls during practice.
Of course doing it in practice is nothing compared to off a live bat during a game, in front of thousands of fans.
The basket catch over the head like that though is something I’d expect every ML outfielder has done over and over again during practice or warmups.
Ichiro is just amazing because he got the chance and pulled it off during a game.
And I believe that's the key right there
While I’ve never performed it or seen players perform it in a ML game off a ML bat,
Bingo.
Granted, this is spring training, so the game doesn’t matter, but what’s the harm in appreciating the hell out of a play that most people can’t make? It’s not just a “basket catch over the head” – most of the last few steps he took to the ball he wasn’t even tracking it. He had a bead on it in his first few steps, turned completely around, and stuck his glove out assuming that his bead was correct. There’s not a lot of players that can do that.
It's a great catch, but I agree with you that people (like Baker) saying it's his best
catch ever, or one of the greatest catches he’s ever seen is a bit much. I think Ichiro has made better grabs, and I was more impressed by 2-3 of Guti’s catches last year.
Great catch, but it was being a little overhyped yesterday by those in attendence.
I think I had a reaction similar to this for about 2 seconds.
Then I watched the catch again…
…and I watched it again….
…and again….
….then I realized that the ball was screaming over Ichiro’s head….
….then I noticed that Ichiro lept off the ground and caught it…
….then I watched him maintain control of the ball after landing and stumbling towards the wall…
….then I sat in awe when I remember that he’s 36 years old.
Whether this is the “best catch of all time” is debatable. But this catch is awesome, no matter how you slice it. Too bad it happened during Spring Training game instead of the real thing.

Uh, what were you expecting if that seriously didn't satisfy you?

Even Ichiro was impressed.
"I’ve never caught a ball like that before, so it will stay in my memory," Ichiro said. "If you look at the angle, usually it’s from the right or the left. But that was straight from the top. That was a tough play and was one of my impressive catches."
It required a bit of creativity.
"Once you go around from the left or the right you don’t get to that ball. When you first see it, you imagine where the ball will land," Ichiro said. "You go straight to that point where the ball will drop and then you will see it from up top."
And when did he see the ball before the catch?
"When it actually passed my head. I’ve been working on this during BP, catching backwards. That helped a lot," Ichiro said.
Got to see it in person
Have to say, I nearly shit myself twice on that play. First, when he covered that much ground that quickly and then jumped up and actually caught it, and then second when he fell down into the wall and I had an “oh my God! Don’t be hurt! Don’t be hurt! Don’t be hurt!” moment.
