3/18: Open Game Thread
TV once more. If you got sick of all those damn starters playing last night, this one will feature 100% more Corey Patterson.
By the way, Milton Bradley played a prank on Junior today, but then desert mirages and hoverflies trick people too, so this still isn't compelling evidence that Bradley is human, in any sense of the word.

Milton has a pretty engaging sense of humor
Demonstrated several times while in Texas. No clue how things got so deranged in Chicago. For all the volatility, he was OK as a Ranger, even delightful at times (high OBP and OPS+ must surely help). Examples, the running out every five or six Hamilton HR’s in the HR Derby with a towel to wipe Josh off, the tarp sliding stuff at a rain delay at Shea, etc.
He is self centered as hell, but if comfortable with those around him, is both fun to watch and a good teammate.

SO nice to watch baseball on TV.

even if it is the Rockies announcers
FSN showing the Rockies broadcast.
No TV or radio for the regular Mariner broadcasters.
I like the occasional outside perspective.

Good. The longer that goes on
The less opportunity for Brock to make ignorant comments about baseball and its players.
Brock's gotten a lot better at Baseball, and doesn't really spout nonsense if he doesn't know the sport.
Salk is great, and I used to think Brock didn’t know anything but football, but he’s really made strides.

Man, the M's are getting shit on by the umps this spring.

There's this hilarious article that I can't find right now
entitled “What the fuck is a balk?” There was one MLB umpire quoted as saying something like “I have no idea what a balk is, so I just never call them.”

I love the asshole yelling "BALK" every time RRS throws to first.

I have this dread right now that the team isn't actually going to perform well this year at all.
Can someone quickly just remind me that Spring Training stats (and especially team records) are useless?
Although it should be noted that the Nationals ave only won, like, two games.
Batted .393/.614/.464 for 2009 Diablos, #5 in OBP for PSSBL Rocky Division.

I've been having the same feeling.
it is starting to look like we may need a lot more out of our offense.
Mike Sweeney came into this game hitting .750.
Spring Training stats are silly.
I'd bet our BABIP against this spring is insane too.
Result of organizational emphasis on pitches pounding the zone and the thin air in AZ maybe? This team will look a lot different in Safeco. I hope. They better. Otherwise all I’ll have is watching the Seahawks FO pull a Bavasi.
Adam Moore, right there. Adam Fuckin' Moore.

How was RR-S's last run unearned?
0 outs when the error occurred, the 3rd run would have scored even with a successful DP.

If this is true, then the gameday box score has it dicked up.
Which is not uncommon during spring training I guess.
So he scored sometime after the 2nd out? I can’t believe I care about this.

Apparently when you get over 60
you have no grasp of the fact that you are making an idiot out of yourself in the stands of a game, by clapping to the music and starting stupid chants.
You should recognize this phenomenon from Rainiers games.
Or don’t you have any INTEGRITY!
That's not the guy who sits down front and yells at the opposition for 9 innings, is it?
~I once gave Jose Canseco $15. ~
Often yells at the Rainiers, esp. the Rainiers manager, but yeah, that's him.
I guess one of the visiting teams all wrote ‘lighten up’ on a ball (and then all signed it), but he refused to take it.
Huh
The guy I saw was very obviously yelling at the Rivercats, specifically. Maybe there are two. Geez.

Woody Paige is in the press box
He looks really old.
Can you punch him for me?
I guess that wouldn’t be very sporting…given his oldness. I can’t stand that guy’s columns.

Some knowledge from Kanekoa Texeira
I just try let the ball hit the bat and not let the bat hit the ball. That’s my philosophy.
I like ground balls, and I like throwing strikes.
Does he have the personality to fit into the clubhouse?
Alternate question: is he interesting?
by Jeff Sullivan on Mar 18, 2010 2:30 PM PDT up reply actions
Some Tony B goodness about Texeira
For me, the opposite hand split tells you a lot about a guy. If a guy has good enough stuff, he can learn how to get his own hand out. If you have something to get the opposite hand out, especially in a ground ball manner, that’s a gift.
Starting to think that Tony had a big role in KT's acquisition

Me too. Chris Jakubauskas was death on a stick to MiLB lefties
MLB lefties? Less so.

Here's a few more of his comments
The opposite hand 5 to 1 groundball rate, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anything like that.
Is he going to have a 5 to 1 again, no that’s an outlier, you probably do regress to the mean. But if you regress to 2 to 1 it’s still pretty good.
Is Bray anything more than random scrap heap org filler?

It was his original position
No long-term future there, hasn’t played regularly since ’06 or ’07

As a backup? Maybe five runs.
That’d probably get cancelled out by the fact that Hannahan’s a much much better defender.
by Graham MacAree on Mar 18, 2010 2:36 PM PDT up reply actions
I'd like to see Hannahan at SS a bit more
I think the odds are very, very good that he’s a much better defender, but in a small sample….
The fact that Hannahan’s a lefty is pretty important, though, so I guess Hannahan may have the higher WAR.
Hannahan's a much better defender everywhere else
So hey we’ll roll with it
by Graham MacAree on Mar 18, 2010 2:42 PM PDT up reply actions
I think it'd be close. I think he's clearly passed Josh Wilson in total value, which, eh, it's something
and with Hannahan’s injury, it could be pretty important. I’ll admit I’m not looking forward to Tui starting games at SS, but I guess it beats Josh Wilson starting at SS.
A fair amount
Not sufficiently better to take away regular playing time, though.

Sean White kind of fascinates me now
I was doing a long post on him, and then decided against it because I don’t think anybody wants to read about Sean White.
I had no idea who it was either.

I have a lot of latent guilt just pent up.
This is as good a reason as any.

Wow - that Griffey bobblehead looks nothing like him.

Interesting from Wak
"If (Jack) Wilson or Hannahan are down, he’s the best shortstop on our roster," Wakamatsu said.
High praise for Hannahan even though he hasn’t really played.
Who is he referring to
