3/14/10 Offtop - Visual Awesomeness!

My first Offtop! And somehow its not going to be a gif dump.

Since the Oscars there has been a lot of movie debat which led to some tech talk so I just wanted to share this.

Color Theory

Its a real interesting look on how Color is assisting the movies storyline.

Yeah, ESPN sucks all right.

Well, I would

People have been bitching about ESPN Insider's lack of quality content for years.

Now they’re actually doing a pretty good job of providing quality content and people bitch about that, too. ESPN is far from perfect but the amount of shit people flip them is bizarre.

by Aaron Campeau on Mar 14, 2010 12:21 PM PDT up reply actions

For a mainstream site, ESPN does a very good job of catering to all types of sports fans

also, it’s not even as if Insider is expensive – order a year of ESPN the Mag for $8 or whatever and you get Insider access free

by seattlebruin on Mar 14, 2010 1:12 PM PDT up reply actions

And they're responsive to criticism!

Their programming reflects this; more soccer, a wider variety of teams being shown on their national baseball broadcasts, better analysis on their studio shows. Then there’s the aforementioned improvement in the quality of Insider content, better website design, etc. Considering their size and scope, they’re doing a terrific job.

by Aaron Campeau on Mar 14, 2010 1:33 PM PDT up reply actions

I've grown tired of the "East Coast Bias" mentality. Fuck you - you live in the top corner of the country

with few sports teams surrounding you. Be thankful for what you have and stop fucking complaining.

I've never really complained about them unless they were saying something like 'Ichiro needs to do more'

they are what they are. I like the channel cause they often show sports and I like to watch sports. I have never gone to them for any kind of news or analysis, and I wouldn’t dream of paying them however little for their content given what’s freely available. That is all.

I'm with you on this

Considering the breadth of their readership/viewership and the sports they have to cover, they really do a great job. There are annoying things on ESPN, but it’s fairly easy to ignore the annoying and hone in on the useful and entertaining.

by Chris Hafner on Mar 15, 2010 8:44 AM PDT up reply actions

Buster Olney has become the reason why I will not contribute any money to ESPN.com for Insider Access.

Today’s article on a Pujols for Howard trade is the worst thing ever. And I know stupid shit like this is always produced by Olney in his Insider Articles.

Here’s the public relations kicker: Howard was born in St. Louis, and is regarded as a hometown kid in that city.

How fucking stupid is Olney? Howard being from St. Louis would never be the kicker in this deal. Pujols played high school baseball in Missouri and married his high school girlfriend whose family lives in Missouri. Pujols is just as much as a hometown player as Howard would be. What a dumbass assertion made by Olney.

And then to even report something so ridiculous as a Pujols for Howard trade… there are no words.

by Wilder. on Mar 14, 2010 3:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Okay, so assuming Pujols loses -.5 wins a year from his Chone projection of 7.2 WAR this year (we'll round it up to 7.5)

Age 30: 2010: 7.5 WAR
Age 31: 2011: 7.0 (last year of his current contract)

Age 32: 2012: 6.5
Age 33: 2013: 6.0
Age 34: 2014: 5.5
Age 35: 2015: 5.0
Age 36: 2016: 4.5
Age 37: 2017: 4.0
Age 38: 2018: 3.5
That’s 35 wins over 7 seasons.

Ryan Howard:

Age 30: 2010: 4.5 WAR
Age 31: 2011: 4.0 (last year of his current contract)
Age 32: 2012: 3.5
Age 33: 2013: 3.0
CLIFF……………..

That's an interesting question...

I don’t think there is a right answer. Both have their obvious benefits, but really what it comes down to is how you match up with the teams you’re playing in the tournament. Being a high seed would seem like it keep fewer “good” teams in your bracket, but more important than the overall quality of an opponent is how you match up with them. If that makes sense.

I’m not a UW fan, but I will root for the Huskies in the tournament cause I root for all PAC-10 teams. If I were a Huskies fan I’d probably want to them to go to Spokane, that way I could go to the game easier.

Though now that I think about it, the Huskies probably will be in Spokane.

Conference champions usually get regional consideration now that they have flexible venue scheduling. They could be in the East regional and still play in Spokane.

Wong Kar Wai and Christopher Doyle

“In the Mood for Love” got all the attention, but I thought some of their earlier work was actually better (more effective by being less obvious) — “Chungking Express” and, especially, “Fallen Angels”

David Lean’s “Lawrence of Arabia” is visually spectacular and certainly worthy of being seen on a really big screen (the Cinerama shows it occasionally) — especially when you realize all that photogenic sand was getting into their equipment the whole time they were shooting it.

Favorite cinematography

The drifting down the river scene in “Night of the Hunter”, the hallway fight scene in “Oldboy”, and the two long, one-shot tracking shots (car attack and baby rescue) in “Children of Men”. Apparently there are a few incredible tracking shots in Bela Tarr’s “Satantango” but the movie is eight hours long and I haven’t been able to find the time to watch it.

I just got around to watching it about a month ago, and I was really impressed.

Sometimes I cringe at certain things that a filmmaker will do that seem more like showing off than actually enhancing the film, but those scenes in Children of Men (particularly the car one) did an amazing job of putting you right there. Incredibly tense.

Boogie Nights and Magnolia had some great shots, too.

that the miserable Schultz years started to turn me away from Sonics basketball.

TouchMyIchiro

by brayden04 on Mar 15, 2010 2:07 PM PDT up reply actions

My pain and disillusionment have remained constant.

Part of that might be my annoyance with the people who didn’t care about the Sonics leaving because they were bad. It was just such an annoyingly short-sighted reason to let a team leave – (most) bad teams get good, (most) good teams get bad. Sports are inherently cyclical.

Had the Mariners left when they were bad, we wouldn’t have had 1995-2003. Had the Seahawks left when they were bad we wouldn’t have had the SuperBowl team. We will no doubt miss some fantastic teams and great memories because we let the Sonics leave, and the mindset that “the Sonics suck, who cares?” helped pave their way out.

None of this excuses the NBA or Clay Bennett for being colossal jackasses, but had there been a popular groundswell of support for a beloved team we might still have said team here.

Time for more scotch.

by Chris Hafner on Mar 15, 2010 2:48 PM PDT up reply actions

There was a popular groundswell of support for the team.

But the people wouldn’t support the owners or city leaders because they were all scumbags. And the people were right not to support them.

The NBA was stolen from Seattle. I would like to see the league go bankrupt.

by Wilder. on Mar 15, 2010 3:21 PM PDT up reply actions

I mostly agree, particularly on the owners, city leaders, and wishing the black plague on the NBA.

I slightly disagree on the groundswell of support. The Save Our Sonics movement was really impressive, but it was fighting an uphill battle against the raging hordes of general indifference.

I think a lot of the problem was we didn’t really know the crisis was upon us until the team had already been sold and the whole thing was (in hindisght) already a fait accompli.

by Chris Hafner on Mar 15, 2010 3:29 PM PDT up reply actions

The fait accompli you spoke of made it hard for some of us to join some 'Save our Sonics' move

What was the best solution here? Supporting Bennett’s clusterfuck of a bill in the legislature?

Bennett owned the team and the league assisted him in moving it. 300,000 people in downtown Seattle wasn’t going to change that. Some times you just know when you’ve been conned.

by marc w on Mar 15, 2010 3:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, the timing really sucked.

By the time we knew there was a real crisis, Bennett owned the team. I think the frustration was that when there was a positive alternative – the Ballmer plan – and we needed some action to get a commitment to that plan and try to use it as leverage to keep the team, we just couldn’t get it done. Part of the problem there was messaging it, I think – it wasn’t a guarantee of keeping the team, so it was hard to get people really motivated about it. This was actually the basis of my first FanPost here.

None of this takes away from the fact that all the major powers at play in the situation either didn’t care (local leadership) or were actively working to move the team (the league, the owners). It was always going to be a longshot, but for years the electeds claimed they wouldn’t do anything for the Sonics because nobody in the area cared about the team. Admittedly, it’s also really hard to get people to care about a team when the league has a business model that allows owners to play cities against each other to blackmail the populace into providing a new building.

There’s not a whole lot of happiness anywhere in the situation.

by Chris Hafner on Mar 15, 2010 4:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah I saw some highlights on ESPN News the other day and

they made me sad. Because the team looks young and good and fun and if they were still the Sonics I’d probably buy tickets to see them every time they came to LA.

I hope so, if only for the phrase "bitch seat".

A friend of mine has a pickup, so someone always ends up in the bitch seat if he takes more than two. His old pickup used to have a bar running along the bed to fasten things to, and those were referred to as the “bitch rails”.

“Favorite Photographs? Favorite Photographers?”

This is probably still my favorite photograph:

If anything, it emphasizes the point that Ansel Adams himself was very much into post-processing techniques a la modern photographers who use Photoshop. This photo shows the straight-out-of-camera print on the left, and the “Photoshopped” version on the right:

Like a bajillion others, I’d say seeing Ansel’s photographs is what made me really want to kick up my photography a notch. So he was an early inspiration for me.

Nowadays, I’m much more into Alfred Stieglitz (aka Mr. Georgia O’Keefe) and Minor White. And several others…

Ciders?

Thanks to the last major beer thread, I’m now plugged into Full Throttle Bottles and have a beer fridge full of delectable beer. So thanks for that!

Now I’m intrigued by ciders. The idea of hard cider has always struck me as attractive – I like a good non-alcoholic cider, and adding a flush of alcohol seems like a winning idea. I’ve never even tried one, though – are there really good ciders out there? Can anybody recommend where I should start?

Washington used to be a significant cider producer

With orchards dedicated to growing cider-specific apple breeds. But when Prohibition hit, those orchards were useless so they were cut down and replaced with eating/cooking apples. As a result all the “venerable” cider producers are in Canada or the UK, where Prohibition never happened, and only relatively lately has cider production returned to the NW. (At least they don’t have to wait for trees to grow, since cider apples, like most commercial apples, are grown from branches grafted to established root stock).

Oh, and are there any Xbox Live experts who would be willing to offer some advice to a hopeless newbie?

Judging by my ability to figure out Xbox Live and have my fun level exceed my frustration level, I have an IQ of roughly 7.

by Chris Hafner on Mar 15, 2010 9:10 AM PDT reply actions

I'm suffering from general frustration and GET OFF MY LAWN-type emotions, but ...

- I tried to Live-enable my primary profile but somehow created an additional profile – which means that I can either play online or access all of my unlocked assets and saved games. I’ve thought about canceling my new Live account (of course, I can’t figure out how to cancel – only upgrade! – from the Xbox itself) and trying again to upgrade the first account. But apparently you have to pay MS to merge the old profile with the new which strikes me as complete BS.

- How essential is a headset? I don’t have one, and I’m not sure I really need one at this stage because initially I just want to play some PGR4 and run some races – not sure I’d need to chat too much for that. But I got caught up playing some new game modes that I completely didn’t understand because OH MY GOD THE GAME MATCHMAKER IS CONFUSING AND YOU DAMN KIDS …. but anyway, playing this game mode I had no idea how to play, and everybody was talking, and I couldn’t hear them and it was probably about how horrible I was because I didn’t know how to play and ohmigod and ohmigod … So yeah. I’m basically just confused.

- I’m just having general difficulty figuring out how to access the Xbox Live functionality in some of the games – like in GTA4 not only did I lose all of my weapons and saves, etc. with the new profile, but I can’t figure out how to play multiplayer over Live.

- Generally speaking, do people on Live just play with their friends and they share gamertags offline? Or do people go online and just get a random match? Because I’m having difficulty in the games I’ve tried to find a good random match in a non-frustrating way, though that could be because I’m not playing the latest games.

Most of this is LLLJ, and I apologize, but … I at the moment I’m leaning towards just killing my membership and playing off-line, but I get the feeling that this is supposed to be really, really fun and I want to figure it out if I can. I’ve never been the technology idiot before and it’s an unhappy feeling.

by Chris Hafner on Mar 15, 2010 9:24 AM PDT up reply actions

Headset is only essential if you play with friends.

If I ever jump into a random match (which I’ve only done a handful of times) I don’t wear my headset, because I don’t want to hear the dumbasses who populate Xbox Live.

How does Facebook come up with its friend suggestions?

There are some people on there that I know as we share many mutual friends – and about half that I have never heard of, and some of those will maybe have less than a dozen friends. And be from India, or somewhere else where I have no links. What gives?

by EnglishMariner on Mar 15, 2010 11:27 AM PDT reply actions

I have no idea.

I get some suggestions from people who went to the same high school as I did, but from different years and with whom I’ve never had any interactions with. I get similar notes on occasion from my college, or my city network. What baffles me though is that there are people signing up for Facebook for the first time, from God knows where in many cases, who get my profile popping up on suggested friend lists for lack of anyone else they’ve added just yet, and then THEY add me. I have a profile picture of myself and a unique enough name, so you’d think they would be able to figure out whether or not they actually know me when I’m pretty damned sure I don’t know who they are. Maybe they’re in it for the networking, I don’t know.

WE have a fight in the game, as Cliff Lee throws a pitch up near Chris Snyder’s head. Snyder takes exception, starts walking to the mound.

Benches clear, mostly a lot of jawing. Snyder has been ejected. Someone should tell Snyder it’s spring training

Divish updates on the blog

“So we have tempers flaring a little. Cliff Lee buzzed the tower on Chris Snyder, sending a fastball up and in on Snyder. Snyder took exception to it and started walking toward the mound. Benches cleared, but it was mostly jawing. Lee was ejected by home plate umpire Brian Knight.

Here’s the backstory. In the first inning, Lee was covering home on Chris Young’s RBI single. Snyder, who was on deck, ran to the back side of home to tell the runner Mark Reynolds to slide. Snyder laid on the ground telling Ryenolds to slide. Lee didn’t see Snyder there and tripped over him. They both exchanged a few words. And Lee let Snyder know in the next at-bat that it wasn’t ok.

So Lee was ejected and Shawn Kelley is into the game, pitching to Snyder."

by msb on Mar 15, 2010 2:12 PM PDT up reply actions

from Drayer

Just got back from talking to Lee… who said that there was no intention behind the pitch to Chris Snyder that got him ejected. “I was trying to go inside. A couple got away from me, the guy hitting got mad, came toward the mound and I got thrown out in the process.”

Lee said tripping over Snyder who was on deck when he was running to back up a play at the plate had nothing to do with the pitch that got away. Of the play at the plate Lee said, “All I know is I was rolling on the ground, got knocked down, I really don’t know what happened there. I didn’t see it at all. I wasn’t looking at the play.”

As for his shortened outing, Lee said he went out to a back field and threw more pitches. Command of the fastball was a challenge all day, one that forced him to keep going back to the pitch to try and get the right location.

“I knew I had to really focus on locating fast balls. I needed to do a better job of 0-2 and 1-2 pitches getting it on the black or just off the plate. The right handed hitters I kept trying to go in a little bit and it was kind of out over the plate. I tried to really emphasize getting over there in the last inning I pitched. A couple got a little too far in and I got thrown out of the game because of it. What can you do.”

The outing reminded me a little of his first simulated game where he struggled with command a little and ended up hitting two minor leaguers. He has told me recently that his approach in these early games is to work on what is not working, if something is not working. We saw this today as he kept going to the inside on the righties.

I'm about 30 hours into Final Fantasy XIII and I'm pretty sure I hate this game.

There’s no end to the dungeons, and they’re not even interesting dungeons. They’re straight fucking lines with wave after wave of monsters. Finish a dungeon and what are you rewarded with? Another goddamn dungeon. I think I’d like this game more if they just pieced all of the cutscenes together and gave it to me on a Blu Ray disc for $20.

As things stand now XIII just passed X as my most despised Final Fantasy entry. Anyone else annoyed by this game as much as me?

So, there's this film out now called Remember Me.

It stars Robert “Twilight” Pattinson, and … well, I’d like to talk about the ending. So – spoilers ahead if you were going to watch it!

SPOILERS * SPOILERS * SPOILERS !!!

After spending a romantic night with Ally, Tyler agrees to meet with his Dad at his Dad’s office one morning. But that morning, Dad does something he never does before: he offers to drive Caroline to school, which makes Mom happy. Dad calls Tyler to tell him that he’s late, and Tyler says it’s okay, he’s already at the building, he’ll go in and wait in his office.
Cue sweet scene where Tyler finds out that Dad’s computer’s screensaver is photos of him and Michael. Dad’s secretary walks in and sees Tyler all sad looking at Michael’s pic. She asks how old he would’ve been. Tyler says 32… “It’s been that long?” “February 26, 1993.” “I should be able to remember that.” “Why? No one else does.”
YOU SEE, THE TWIST IS THAT MICHAEL DIDN’T DIE ON 9/11, BUT IN THE FIRST WTC ATTACK!!! AND YOU SEE, TYLER’S BITTER BECAUSE PEOPLE FORGET.
But wait, there’s more. We cut to Caroline now in class, and her teacher asks the students if they can write the date on the blackboard. Caroline goes up and writes…. SEPTEMBER 11, 2001.
Cut back to Tyler in his Dad’s office. The camera zooms back… reveal that OMG! HIS DAD’S OFFICE IS THE 92ND FLOOR OF THE WTC!!!
Then there’s a sad montage of 9/11 with Tyler’s melancholic voiceover. And later, a shot of two tombstones side by side, one says FEB 23, 1993 and the other SEPT 11, 2001.

I mean….holy shit, right guys? Who thought this was a good idea?

So I'm at yet another show, in Tampa.

If the Hard Rock casino is the best in the area like they say, don’t bother going to a casino in Tampa. Just go to the Grand in Biloxi or something.

I found this site (before Lifehacker for once) and it’s changed my morning routine forever, so I’m going to share it.
http://www.750words.com

I used to take time to write every day, but once I started working at my current job I could never keep my notebook with me, so that habit fell by the wayside. Being online, I can always get to it. Even if you don’t write normally, give it a try for a week. You’ll find that it makes it easier to get things down in type easier for the rest of the day if you put down four or five paragraphs of whatever in the morning.

I wish I had brought my XBox here, now I have to do work instead. I never even got a chance to start FFXIII, last week was a flurry of 16 hour days and packing and house flooding, and now I’m in a fucking casino. In that vein, I’ve skipped through this OT and anything by Brian I’ve scrolled past. Sorry, bud, it’s for my own good.

On the plus side of this horrendous weekend, I saw a moron getting rescued by a boat during the flooding, then promptly stood up in the boat and fell back in the water. I guess Jeeps can’t go through a four foot high river after all. More tragically, I saw a lot of people that probably don’t have flood insurance that are now completely fucked when the dams broke all around NNJ.

UEFA changed it this year for some reason

so there’s an extra week between these ties for all teams. I have no idea why, it’s not like they make any extra money this way.

by pdb on Mar 16, 2010 3:48 PM PDT up reply actions

The competition's always been like 9-10 months long.

I’m guessing the clubs asked for a bit of a break, with domestic leagues/cups all sort of stacking up these days.

I agree that the whole thing drags on, but is it better to have a week between legs or have an even longer winter break thing. This thing started in July, and it’ll end in late May.

by marc w on Mar 16, 2010 4:08 PM PDT up reply actions

It's two weeks between legs now though which is the problem

It used to be a team would play on a Tuesday and then the following Wednesday; now it’s Tuesday/off week/Tuesday. I’d be willing to bet the clubs liked the old schedule better because it was a break between rounds, now it’s just a weekly slog. I really don’t like the Champions League all that much, it’s a big bloated moneygrab and I wouldn’t mind it going away. Which of course it never will.

by pdb on Mar 16, 2010 9:02 PM PDT up reply actions

I know, and while that's annoying, they could play them on back to back days

and the competition would still last 10/11 months. So is this better or worse? I don’t know. Probably better for the teams, indifferent from a TV perspective, so… OK.

Holocaust Museum is a must.

• Hirshhorn Museum always has interesting works of art.
• Georgetown is a cool place to walk around.
• I think you can write your Senator or Congressman for a tour of the Capital building. I think the White House tours are still closed (since 9/11).
• Annapolis might be worth visiting (haven’t gone out there myself).
• Go catch an Orioles game at Camden Yards.
• Take a trip out to Mount Vernon.
• Don’t go to FedEx field. It’s ghetto all around.
• Don’t go SE of the Anacostia River. Unless you want to find yourself in the projects.
• Unfortunately, no golf tournaments in the Bethesda/Potomac area this year. Tiger’s AT&T National is usually held at Congressional golf course during the summer, but it has been moved to Pennsylvania as Congressional is preparing for the 2011 U.S. Open.
• Find yourself some good Maryland blue crab. Can’t say I recommend anywhere specifically, but ask around and you’ll find a good place.

There’s plenty of stuff to do. You just need to find out what you like doing and research it out. I am sure history overload from the museums is not how you want to spend your summer, though. What are you doing for your internship?

by Wilder. on Mar 16, 2010 3:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Not sure yet what the internship will actually be.

It’s through a program at my school, and they do all the internship finding work for me (as well as secure housing—they have their own apartment building right by the Capitol). I specified an interest in think tanks, embassies or other internationally flavored orgs, but if that doesn’t work out I’ll just end up with a congressperson’s office (which obviously isn’t that bad of an alternative).

And thanks for all your pieces of advice! Storing all of this away.

NASA finds a shrimp under 600 feet of Antarctic ice, 12.5 miles away from open water

Link

Until now, scientists thought that only microbial life could live under these conditions. Stacy Kim—one of the biologists in NASA’s ice science team—says that they don’t really have a clue about what is happening down there, but that it is highly improbable that these animals swam all the way from open water.
The most important consequence of this discovery, however, is the impact on the search for complex life forms in other planets and moons in our own Solar System. Could this mean that we would be able find complex lifeforms under the seas of Europa? We don’t know, but at least now this may be a possibility.

UW’s wideouts are pretty good and a year older. The OL is still a work in progress, but should get a boost from a great recruiting class. If they can keep Locker on his feet (and if Locker doesn’t run himself into injuries) he’s a Heisman candidate.

I don't think he'll ever be a Heisman candidate

I know the talent has gotten better around him, but I don’t think it is good enough to prop him up that far. Too have any shot at a Heisman he is going to need to absolutely destroy both Oregon AND USC, plus put up consistent numbers against the rest of UWs tough schedule.

@BYU, @USC and @Oregon are the three biggies, but also home vs Nebraska is gonna be big too. If they lose/he sucks in any of those then his chances are gone.

Still, I think I recognized that while Ruskell wasn’t great, he was a middle-of-the-road GM and we sure as hell could do a lot worse, and hey wouldn’t you know we got way worse!

by BrianL on Mar 17, 2010 8:52 AM PDT up reply actions

So far we've created a gaping hole at safety but cutting an unspectacular but solid Deon Grant

franchised an easily replaceable kicker, let the WR depth somehow get worse, made a lateral move at best by dealing Wallace, and created their very own Soriano for HoRam moment.

Things are trending very badly.

by BrianL on Mar 17, 2010 9:03 AM PDT up reply actions

Ruskell franchised his kicker too, so Carroll loses points for originality

Seneca needed to be traded. It wasn’t working.
The WR ‘depth’ WAS the Soriano for HoRam moment for the last front office, but yes, point taken.

Things are trending in the direction of an absolute, top-to-bottom rebuild. In general, I think that’s probably the right thing to do. The problem is trading Tapp for a much-older-Tapp. I don’t see how that fits with the rebuild strategy.

by marc w on Mar 17, 2010 9:21 AM PDT up reply actions

The return we got on Seneca was equal to or less than what we would have gotten if he had just walked.

What’s the harm in retaining him as a backup for another season or until they’ve secured the services of someone else?

If you’re talking about the first for Branch trade, John had a good writeup a year or so ago that made a convincing case that it was a fair move all around.

But yes, the Tapp move makes no sense no matter how you look at it. Trading him for a scrub and a significantly less valuable 4th is just odd.

by BrianL on Mar 17, 2010 9:33 AM PDT up reply actions

There's no harm whatsoever in retaining Wallace as a back-up for another season

in that having a not-that-awesome back-up on a losing team means nothing. But what’s good about it? Why do we want a 30 year old back-up on a rebuilding team? Can’t imagine Wallace would’ve wanted it either.

The Branch trade was bad, because it basically came hand in hand with the Branch contract. I know John’s written quite well about how to view the trade, and he’s sort of gotten me to move from ‘abomination’ to merely ‘really dumb.’ The argument that he’s been worth more than the 24th pick or whatever is fine as far as it goes, but it’s not fine to pay Deion Branch like he’s an elite WR. The Housh thing is similar. Housh is a good player (as is Branch), but the amount of payroll going to good WRs while the line and QB could not get passes to WRs was astounding. All the money was going to the wrong players, and that’s just really, really Bavasi-ish.

Which is why Tapp was a good player for the Hawks to hold on to and holy moly, why did they do this?

I'd go with Arsenal myself

solely because they’ll still be solvent in five years’ time. Not a lot of other teams can guarantee that. Plus there’s Arsene Wenger – people can and do hate him, but he almost singlehandedly hauled the English Premiership into the modern age as far as styles of play. He’s…stagnated somewhat in the last couple seasons, but he has done more for the game in England than any manager anywhere, and for that alone he’s a legend.

Plus they have a cannon for a logo.

by pdb on Mar 17, 2010 6:54 AM PDT up reply actions

Absolutely agree from a player perspective

But Wenger almost singlehandedly destroyed the pint-and-a-smoke-after-training culture that permeated Arsenal’s changing room, which then forced other teams to do the same. He changed how English footballers look at their diet, their training regimens, and their general approach to the game.

Zola was the first smash-hit successful “mainstream” foreign player (not a washed up old man playing for a relegation threatened side), and he opened a lot of doors, to be sure.

by pdb on Mar 17, 2010 7:46 AM PDT up reply actions

I wouldn't pick Everton simply because every American choosing a team right now will be picking Everton.

But that’s just my contrarian nature.

Everton have an excellent manager in David Moyes and if they didn’t have so many injuries at the beginning of the season, they’d likely be in the hotly contested race for fourth. They have a fun nickname (Toffees) and a built-in rivalry against Liverpool. They really aren’t a bad team to get behind right now.

But if you can’t get past Lando, I’d say you want to stick with at team in the upper ten, because as exciting as relegation battle is, do you really want to choose a team and then next year have them in the Championship? That’s even harder to follow. Unfortunately, I have quite a few prejudices for top-ten teams: I hate Harry Redknapp and for some reason the Spurs style of play irks me. Chelsea, ManU and Liverpool are all out simply for being too hated. Citeh is playing just to win and seems to believe that throwing oodles of cash around should buy them respect. Birmingham are scum.

Fulham could be an ok choice—London club, played the Europa League this year, although their League standings aren’t as high as last year. Made the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

But clearly I would recommend Villa to anyone. And it’s not just because it’s my club (although that helps). They have a young squad that will likely stick together for the next few years, but it’s not so young that they aren’t able to win anything. They made the finals of the Carling Cup this year, are facing Chelsea in the semis of the FA Cup, and are seventh in the table while still having two games to make up. They focus on English players rather than players from abroad and Martin O’Neill is a respected manager. Randy Lerner owns them so there’s an American connection, as there also is from Brad Friedel, our keeper. They’re a side on the rise and when they open up and play attacking football, as they did against Wigan last night, they’re even fun (read: terrifying) to watch.

by BrianL on Mar 17, 2010 7:21 AM PDT up reply actions

I love David Moyes, and Everton's youth system is legendary, but they're going to struggle to crack the top 4

Think of Everton as the Oakland A’s of the premiership, where they often get a lot from their smallish budget (no, they’re not the smallest club in the game or anything, but neither are the A’s). That’s cool and all, but they’ve got so much to overcome that they’ll bounce from 5th to 15th. Again, I support Tottenham, so I’m cool with bouncing from 5th to 15th, and I’m even cool with getting not a lot from a comparatively larger budget, but just know what you’re signing up for.

Six years ago the Mariners were shitting on us while the Seahawks were at the beginning of a very nice run. Now the roles appear to have swapped, but there are no guarantees the Mariners won’t be pissing us off again in short order. It just kind of goes with being a sports fan.

It also helps to stop caring as much, but then you have to fill that void with something else.

I used to become so infuriated as a fan and then my wife and I had a monumental argument about it at one point. I stepped back and realized I needed to be less worked up over things that I have zero control over. Now I care far more about things that I actually do than I do about the teams I root for and it has actually made being a fan more enjoyable.

Note: This may not work for everyone.

It drives me nuts that people routinely say things like “Chone Figgins O-Swing% is down 7.4% from 2007.” Because it isn’t true. A 7.4% reduction from 22.3% is 20.6498%. It’s not like it’s harder to say “Chone Figgins O-Swing% is down 7.4 points from 2007.” Okay, maybe slightly, but come on.
