3/10/10 Offtop of Woohoo new things

New OT, frankly because that other one was getting really full plus I wanted to post my first OT plus I just bought a new cell phone because my screen had cracked on my current one.  I bought a white MyTouch 3G which comes with the 3.5mm headphone jack and the Swype keyboard.  I love new things because the first couple of days are full of the joys of figuring out everything in it.  Ah, the joy of discovery.  Swype seems like that it will be pretty awesome to use and hopefully once I get used to it I will be able to type at/above the 40 word a minute benchmark.

What are some recommended Android apps?  iMusic and Ringdroid were both recommended by T-Mobile.

So what has been your favorite major purchase?  What has been your most disappointing major purchase?

All I can say is that my iPhone is better than my old HTC Tilt.

To this day my Blackberry 8700 is still the best phone I’ve owned.

by BrianL on Mar 10, 2010 7:18 PM PST up reply actions

The 87xx blackberries were the best phone ever.

Although I do have a soft spot for my old 7250, because it was literally indestructible. That thing was thrown over 50ft on multiple occasions, and nothing worse than ever a scratch. But when Verizon dropped analog I had to move up. ):

I wanted to get the Nexus One

but, even though I was eligible for an upgrade, Google kept on telling me I wasn’t. I started to read into and figured out that you pretty much have to already have the data plan in order to be eligible for the $179 price. I think that Google is really handling the upgrade eligibility in the wrong way. Plus, I needed to get a phone right away, and I liked the myTouch.

AT&T is my biggest complaint.

Battery life would be a big problem if I ever depended on apps for more than 2 hours.

I need to upgrade to 3G, but don’t have the money and am willing to wait until the generation is released.

Other than those things, I love my iPhone. But I am easily pleased because it’s just a phone when it comes down to it.

by Wilder. on Mar 12, 2010 3:38 PM PST up reply actions

I don't share all of Brian's criticisms;

aside from the lack of multi-tasking, I think the interface is absolutely amazing and I’ve never had a major issue with battery like. (I am also obsessive about keeping my phone charged, so this might be why.) Apple’s control of the app store is somewhat annoying, but there are so many amazing apps available that I find it hard to complain.

My biggest issue is that it crashes a lot, the home button hasn’t been responsive for a almost six months and now it’sm just stopped working altogether. If they can fix it for a reasonable amount of money, I won’t be too judgmental on this point, but because it’s an Apple product I doubt very highly that they’ll be able to fix it cheaply if they fix it at all. And I have a sneaking suspicion that if I were able to open it myself, I’d be able to fix it quite easily without even taking it in. Which is smart business on their end to a certain extent, but it’s also a big reason why I’m probably going to get a Droid (or some other Android based smartphone if something sexier comes out between now and the end of my contract.)

by Aaron Campeau on Mar 10, 2010 7:20 PM PST up reply actions

Try google searching your issues, I found once found a website that demonstrated how to fix my iPod with a beer coaster.

4 years later it’s still working like a champ, still has a beer coaster folded in half stuck in there.

by Kermit. on Mar 10, 2010 7:26 PM PST up reply actions

I'm looking, it's an iPod Color 60 gig. The hard drive cases would expand and the drop in internal pressure would kill them.

Stick something narrow but at least 3/4 inch long (lessens the chance of chipping the case) in the crack and pop the case, fold a beer coaster (I cut in half and had to trim it a bit to fit) on top of the hard drive, pop the case back together. Squishes the hard drive case back down, raising the internal pressure and voila! Magic.

iFixit dot com has parts for anything Apple, and there’s wikihow fixit pages, this one was something else but I’m having trouble locating it.

by Kermit. on Mar 10, 2010 7:38 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah I was close to sending it in but someone tipped me to an internet hack site.

Cannot locate it to save my life now, 4 years ago it was the first return on a google search just using a few search words. Now I’m getting nothing but hits for iPhone apps and hard drive replacements.

by Kermit. on Mar 10, 2010 7:48 PM PST up reply actions

Part of the problem is that my iPhone is also my work phone

and as such it’s expected that I’ve got push e-mail turned on, which kills my battery in about 12 hours.

by BrianL on Mar 10, 2010 7:34 PM PST up reply actions

It crashes a lot, apps aren't screened at all, new firmware can't be jailbroken.

Huge restrictions to how you can use it, camera is shit, requires using the piece of shit software called iTunes…

It’s ok as far as phones go, but it’s not like that’s saying anything. I wish I waited it out and got a Nexus One.

by lailaihei on Mar 10, 2010 10:47 PM PST up reply actions

You are so, so SO wrong on this...

Unless you’re talking about the camera prior to the 3Gs.

The difference between the 3G and 3Gs camera is very significantly noticeable, but even the 3G’s camera is very good.

I literally have ten thousand dollars worth of camera gear and I shoot about 85% of my photos nowadays with my iPhone.

Flash just drains battery life significantly. Plus it really detracts from the quality. You can get cases w/flashes built in if you really want it, but cell phone flashes really suck in general.

Seriously:

After the Autumn Rainstorm #2, 2009

I printed this and compared it to some prints I made with my medium-format camera in college. The iPhone 3Gs camera is by far the best camera in any phone I’ve ever tried (and I’ve tried several). Mega-pixels and flash be damned. Throw in all of the absolutely amazing photo processing apps and the iPhone is a hell of a photography tool.

In fact – if I didn’t shoot sports and weddings, the iPhone would probably be my only digital camera. I’m not joking one bit. There’s a whole entire genre of photography that has come about precisely because the camera in the iPhone is really really good…

I just use the normal Camera app to shoot and then I process in a whole variety of other apps. I just bought ProCamera after reading some favorable reviews and it seems like a great camera app.

Obviously a good photographer can get better results out of subpar hardware than your average snapper...

But I’m sorry, the iPhone’s (even the 3GS version) camera is wholly unimpressive, at least compared to the competition. In an age where I can get a Nokia with an 8Mpixel sensor and a Zeiss lens, it’s inexcusable that Apple doesn’t have a better system in their “advanced” phone.

Beyond that, the simple fact that it took them until the 3GS just to get an autofocus is pathetic. No ifs, ands, or buts. And what about a flash? Granted, you’re not getting a great one, but back in 2006, you could get a Sony Ericsson with a 3.2Mpixel sensor, autofocus, and xenon flash. Fast-forward to the original iPhone’s contemporaries, and look at a Nokia N95 etc (or even my non-photo-centric E90) to see how far behind Apple was on phone cameras then.

Can decent, even good pictures be taken with an iPhone of any sort? Sure. Does that even remotely minimize how lousy the camera is considering the cost/featureset inherent to a good smartphone today? Hardly. (Remember, the true cost of an new iPhone (hardware, no contract) is ~$600 (think subsidy-free replacement cost)—look at the cameras in other phones in that price class)

This thread has taught me that the iPhone has a shitty camera.

I also know some people here like PositivePaul and outside of LL who take amazing photos with their iPhones. Therefore I now know they are amazing photographers for getting such great work out of a crappy camera.

by Sec 108 on Mar 15, 2010 8:49 AM PDT up reply actions

So I was preparing a long comment about why I think it's great despite some faults

and then I wanted to throw a few pictures onto my iPhone. Just like 25-30 snapshots from a couple of trips over the years.
It’s taken me a long, long time to do. I ended up creating a new directory on my computer to sync, copying files to that new folder, syncing, blah blah blah. My old winmo phone could’ve handled this in a few minutes. When people say having to use iTunes is annoying, they’re not talking about a minor issue, they mean that program is shitty and wastes your time. Grrrr.

I still agree with ac that it’s a fun device, and at least my experience with battery life has been quite good. I charge it every 2 or 3 days and I’ve generally been fine, which is better than my old winmo phone. So there’s the quality of the interface, which is high, and there’s the sheer volume of apps, like that new heat map app for hitters that Craig Glaser’s putting out soon. I mean, seriously, how cool is that? There are just more cool baseball apps for the iPhone than other phones, at least at this time.

by marc w on Mar 10, 2010 11:24 PM PST up reply actions

iTunes works better if you're a Mac everything *in my experience* even then it's a pain in the ass.

My beef w/iTunes...

It’s waaaay to heavy, as others have said, but it wasn’t originally an Apple product. Rewriting it now would be extremely tough for them, considering how central it is to the iPhone/iPod.

Biggest beef, though? When iTunes loses a song (and it does so very, very frequently for me), there’s no real easy way to get it back. Duplicate files are extremely tough to manage, and while there are utilities for this they’re not free and GOOD GRAVY you shouldn’t have to do this!

Has anyone figured out a way to really manage smart playlists well in iTunes? I’ve got one where I’ve got like 47 categories of stuff I want in the play list, but it picks up songs that I don’t want on there. Yes, I know you can un-check the songs and it will skip them but what if I want that song in a different playlist… There’s something there to the logic, but it’s not user friendly at all. For example – this smart playlist I’m dealing with includes a bunch of Christmas songs. If I add a line to exclude the Christmas songs, then the playlist goes crazy and adds waaaay more stuff than what I want.

I like it well enough for managing the iPhone. It’s OK for that (I’ve got photo folders, too, that I sync if I want to add them to the phone, but generally I just pull up my Flickr stream or web site). I’ve finally also learned to use Camera Connect on the Mac to transfer photos to and from the iPhone.

But, honestly, iTunes is a wart on Apple. It’s their worst product IMHO…

I love love LOVE my iPhone...

…but I hate these:

1) The phone. Of course, if I used something other than dollar store cases it probably wouldn’t bother me. The screen always does the opposite of what I want it to – when I stick it to my ear, it stays on and pushes random keypad numbers or the mute button. When I pull it away from my ear it finally disables the screen, but of course that’s when I actually need to USE the screen (i.e. to hang up, etc…)

2) iTunes. Ugh. Don’t get me started. Not. A. Fan. At. ALL!

3) AT&T. AT&T. AT&T. Looooathe their service and their coverage.

4) Lack of Flash for certain Flash content. I get that it’s really not a good interface for Flash since you really can’t mimic the mouse-over command very easily at all (and lots of Flash content relies on the mouse over command for key functionality). Since Flash is so mouse-centric I’m not sure implementation on an iPhone (or any touchscreen phone for that matter) makes a lot of sense.

I have the Motorola Droid and like it

I would say “love it” but it has randomly rebooted in the middle of something about 3 times, and I have had to hard-reset it (take out the battery) twice since early November…not a big deal, but annoying and makes me cautiously pessimistic about the phone lasting 2 years. But yeah I love the Android OS, never had an iPhone, but based on tooling around with my friends’, I like this a lot better (specifically for the Droid, the hardware keyboard is nice).

Apps that Roberto didn’t mention:
*Foursquare, if you’re into the whole mutual stalking thing
*If your phone has an LED flash, most phones have an app that will let you use it as a flashlight
*CarDar is cool for marking where your car is parked and then finding it again using GPS. Came in handy in the giant gold course at the Rose Bowl
*Second on Task Manager, simple, easy to use, best task manager/killer I’ve seen out there
*ConnectBot if you’re a Linux nerd like me and want to SSH into stuff
*Compass is kind of a novelty, but I’ve used it once to figure out which direction was which

Droid Rules

I have the Motorola Droid too and I love it. The antenna is a lot stronger than on my old phone. I used to lose coverage in Sisters when driving from Bend to Salem Oregon. With the new phone I hold the signal all the way over Santiam Pass, about 25 miles farther.

My favorite feature is the voice activated search in the web browser and in Google Maps. I love not having to type in destinations and web searches.

by Droid Rage on Mar 11, 2010 7:55 PM PST up reply actions

Again, don't have an iPhone for comparison

But I definitely have to charge it every night if I’m using it for web browsing a fair amount. As far as idling or using the actual phone, it would probably last a couple of days. The screen is really nice but that’s where most of the battery life goes. I think someone ran a test with the screen on constantly and the music player running (essentially trying to max out battery discharge) and it only lasted 2 or 3 hours.

Favorite major purchase?

My Macbook. Between VMWare to run my Windows and Linux applications, and the rock-solid hardware, I’ve had only one single complaint about it, and that’s the screen builds up dust faster than any laptop I’ve owned, ever.

A solid second place choice would be my season tickets (NJ Devils). You don’t realize how much more fun a sport can be to watch until you go to every game in person and see all the quirks and downright weird habits firsthand.

Least favorite?
I’m going to go with the most recent bane of my existence and pick my stupid house. Yes, I know it’s a long term good, but for fuck’s sake, I miss having any free time at all. And it’s not even summer yet, when all the real work will start.

Second choice on the negative end would be my Craftsman tool set. Nothing but crap all around. I knew I should have saved up and bought SnapOn, but my car needed fixing then and I didn’t want to mix tool brands when I knew I was making a lifetime purchase.

I rarely watch cable unless there’s sports on.

Least favorite: Seahawks season tickets last year. Crappy season, crappy team, and it made me realize that going to football games should be a treat. I found myself dreading the three-hour drive up to Seattle every other week.

Favorite is both versions of my Ford ZX2

Least favorite: Either my G1 or Seahawk season tickets. I love Android and the form factor of the G1 to death but the fact that it’s unlikely to receive updates due to short sightedness by HTC, the massive ordeal that came from switch to T mobile that resulted in me losing phone service for 2 months and the fact that T-Mobile blows compared to Sprint technology wise makes me regret the move.

Me regreting the Hawks tickets has nothing to do with the team or the experience at Qwest Field. the ushers basically treated us like shit even though we tried to be reasonable and were season ticket holders.Combine that with having to pay 150 dollars for fucking preseason games and I’m better off just buying 8 individual standing room only tickets and spending the saved 300 dollars on Seahawks gear and that makes me the saddest panda in the whole wide world.

by Robert on Mar 11, 2010 9:32 AM PST up reply actions

Favorite: Probably my PS3.

It was a total impulse purchase because I was dying to play The Show, and I assumed I would live to regret spending $460+ to get my baseball fix. But I don’t. With Blu-ray, streaming Netflix and DVD upscaling, it’s become my main entertainment hub. Well worth the cost for me.

A close second-place: A good mattress.

Least: My 08 Civic, I guess. I love it and wouldn’t say I regret buying it, but sometimes I think I probably didn’t need to buy it brand new. I see my fiancee paying like $150 a month for her car and I kick myself sometimes.

Agree with the house, hunting down and killing the former owner is just about to go on the bucket list.

Also second Scruffy on Kobalt tools, if they can handle an offshore marine environment they can handle anything. Only crescent wrench I ever took underwater and could still use a week later. And this was with maintenance, washing with fresh water, machine oil, etc.

Favorite purchase of all time is a toss up between my Kirby-Morgan 17B dive hat or an old .243 Remington deer rifle I used to own. That particular dive hat is an old model but fits like a glove, just about every dive hat since is basically an updated or slightly modified version. When you turn your head it turns with you, one of the frequent comments you’ll hear about the hat. The .243 was just a sweet deer rifle, flat shooting, reliable, fairly standard bolt action. Rarely had to adjust the sights, really miss that thing.

Favorite major purchase: The first desktop computer I paid for. This is purely nostalgic, but I saved up for an AMD Athlon that was just on the cutting edge of 64 bit computing when I was in middle school. Spent about $500 on the components. The machine lasted me through most of high school before I replaced it with an Intel Core 2 Quad setup.

Least favorite: My second cell phone, an HTC Tilt. Garbage OS, garbage handset.

We just purchased matching leather sofa and love seat. Those were the final items from our college days.

And I joined a Rugby team, club membership is 190.00, but I get to do wind sprints and workout with a team. I feel way more healthy because of it.

Hmm...

Favorite? I can’t put my laptop because the bastards put Vista on it the first time around, so I’d go with my Zune because it makes me happy on a near-daily basis and the Zune Pass subscription service made things really easy on someone like me who came late to the MP3 player scene. I also bought a Viewsonic TV for my mom years back, no problems with that, and my Honda, which I bought used and doesn’t even have the features that came standard that year, has at least been a solid vehicle with little maintenance.

Least favorite? Tough to say. I think it might be my old desktop, partially because I didn’t realize that I was really going to be in the market for a laptop in the coming year or two when I had it built, and partially because my friends were in a phase where everyone was building bigger and bigger computers and mine, while having enough fans on it to keep okay in the summertime despite being on the west end of the house and getting all the sun in the afternoon, it’s just damned unwieldy, and not particularly aesthetically pleasing.

Hmm

Favorite:

The 1990 Dodge Colt I had for a few months in Tacoma. That thing drove like a go-cart (it basically was, I guess…no power steering, 4 speed manual transmission <100 HP motor, very low to the ground), got me back and forth across Washington several times, averaged 39 MPG, was batshit cheap to insure, and cost me $600 to buy + $150 to get it up to par. One of my larger regrets ever was selling that thing- I should have tried to get it to Wyoming- I bet it would have made it. That said, I sold it for $900, which covered everything I added in, the registration, and most of my insurance costs.

Least Favorite:
The kegerator I bought at the beginning of t his school year. I got a great deal on it and was able to sell it for a profit in January, but while it was in my possession I quintupled my alcohol consumption and it never filled its intent which was for me to save money on beer.

Including gas (at $4/gallon) maintenance and insurance but also less sale cost

I only had it for four months so I only put 7000 miles on it and only changed the oil once (doing it myself).

I essentially calculated it as if it were a four month rental. If I still owned the car the rate would be higher, especially since I saw it on craigslist a few weeks ago with a blown clutch

Determined, Jonesing Commentor

by Corco on Mar 11, 2010 1:25 PM PST up reply actions

Because I'm not really hip enough to delve into the music threads, I'll put it here.

During the Olympics the Nike commercial had a really catchy melody behind it, and it turns out it’s by The Hours.

I found a torrent to give it a shot, and ended up liking the whole album enough to buy it on fucking CD since the only download service that carries it is iTunes.

What the hell am I supposed to do with a CD nowadays? I’m planning on ripping it to get a better file rate, but after that I’m at a loss.

Anyone else find a song from a commercial and end up liking the rest of the album more? I’m personally disgusted that I found good music from a commercial, because I avoid ads like a bad metaphor.

There are some bands that are getting good exposure from commercials

Like with Phoenix being featured in the Cadillac ad campaigns. I think I might have first heard them on SNL and then heard the song in the ads, but I’m not positive on that.

It's not the same now as it used to be, like '60's bands cashing in on their catalogs and getting shit for it.

Sprint has had a 4G network that's been functioning fine since mid 2009 and we still won't see a 4G device for at least 6 months (supposedly the HTC supersonic)

There is no way that Apple ever puts their product on a beta network. The dark horse that I can see is T-Mobile picking it up. While their 3G map is pretty small, it’s all 7.2 MB HSDPA with a switch to 21+MB HSDA+ a software upgrade away( they are already testing it in Philly). With all the rumors that Deutsche Telekom is going to drop them, they will need to make a splash as their own independent company.

Kinda makes you wonder what a Matsui Blankie is for when you read things like this...
And, of course, he likes to watch his much vaunted porno collection, tapes that he often trades with Japanese reporters. As one Japanese journalist put it, describing Matsui’s affinity for such unique Japanese cultural institutions like the no-panties shabu-shabu in Japan, “Matsui is a horny guy. All of us are horny, more or less. But Matsui doesn’t attempt to hide the fact.” Yet another win for the Japanese Everyman.

Getting it in isn't really the problem

You can hide it any number of places, in your sock, buried deep in a backpack, etc. It’s more the transportation of the liquor into your body that can cause problems. I’ve seen people pour it into an empty beer cup, but you have to be discreet or the alcohol enforcement peeps will kick you out.

Ehh, I’m not sure if it’s worth the hassle, especially with season tickets. We really need FlaskInSafeco

LLLJ aside...

I’ve been getting an earful from the administration and deans of my school for the past few weeks because you need 128 credits to graduate, and with transfer (60) and what I’ve taken here (51 now, plus 13 pending), I’m bumping up against the limit. The reason I’m hitting that limit is that I’ve been trying to double major. I haven’t been taking extraneous classes or anything, just everything focused on my majors and the other requirements.

I originally thought that it was going to take me until Spring 2011 to fill out everything I needed for the major, maybe with Spring being a fairly light semester. BUT I discovered today that I can transfer five classes, not four as I originally thought, towards the English major. This means that if I take two specific English courses over the summer along with my Creative Writing masters seminar, then take Art Humanities, two Writing seminars, and my fifth Writing workshop over the Fall semester, I’ll graduate in December, probably Summa Cum Laude, with a double major in English + Comp Lit / Creative Writing. Less debt, and getting out of New York four months earlier than I anticipated.

Getting all the ducks in a row, last minute surprises from the admin., absolute craziness. Good to hear one work out on the positive side.

by Kermit. on Mar 12, 2010 2:01 PM PST up reply actions

I'm not entirely out of the woods yet.

What I should say is that it’s theoretically possible for me to graduate in the Fall. I still need to get transfer credit approval from the monolithic and nigh-impregnable English department, which has too many students to oversee and too much infighting to give a shit about anything. There are good odds on me having enough in those 10 SCCC classes to qualify for 5 transfer classes, but it’s not done until it’s done.

I may also run into issues with the Creative Writing department because I took two workshops outside my genre instead of the standard one, and there’s one extra credit that I may have trouble filling in the department, but I’m pretty tight with the head of the department for being on a lit mag she oversaw, I get along well with the point man for my genre, and I also get along with the administrative head of the department, so I can likely get whatever I want out of them.

Not immediately.

Most likely, I’m going to jump into a MFA program in the fall of ‘11. I haven’t really researched programs yet (that’s a project for this coming week), but I’m looking into Iowa, UMass-Amherst, and UMontana-Missoula based on the recommendations of one of my profs. He didn’t think Austin would be a fit, and I told him that New York and I don’t jibe well together, so I’ll probably only apply to Columbia as a back-up.

As for cash, I’ve been working as an editorial assistant for the alumni magazine, and can use journalism as a kind of fallback, but between USSM and migrating to a new host for my own minor league blog, I’m getting a small, but not totally insignificant amount of income. I’m also taking bartending lessons in April, so that’s an option for extra scratch. More likely though I’ll go back to delivering in Seattle for a little while to scrounge up some cash. They’d take me back, I just don’t know where at this point.

But I have a friend who went to Iowa, basically to work with Cole Swenson, and has not found her to be very helpful at all.

I'm glad you are exploring those different options.

I got my undergrad from BYU last August and still haven’t found any work. Talking with one of the deans before I graduated, he said the job placement level is usually 85-90%, but in 2009 it was down to 15%. I imagine this is what most schools are going through because so many graduates are hurting from their student loans and think they wasted their time obtaining a degree. I was just curious to know your job situation as a post-grad.

Right now, I am trying to get into the Army WOFT program to become a helicopter pilot. I was supposed to have a review board interview on March 2, but the Seattle unit canceled the board and now I have to wait until March 30. I sat down with one of the commanders who alternates on the review board and she said I am one of the most qualified applicants she has seen in her eight years at the position, which is encouraging. It’s just been frustrating not being able to find a job in this economy and this month delay doesn’t help.

Good to know you are on track to graduate early and I hope your plans come together.

I don't know.

His main occupation is applying to and dropping out of programs to build up connections. So he was premed and business at Cornell, then dropped out, and showed up at Columbia doing econ and talking his way into a joint MBA program, and if he hasn’t dropped out is on the verge of doing so, and is now trying to transfer to another Ivy League school to build up even more connections.

On his resume, he claims innovative experience in both the medical and finance fields and is able to talk investors into giving him millions of dollars for his company. He will then hire a round of interns, most of whom he will fire, and spend the remainder of the money on adderall and partying around the country while conducting clandestine “business meetings”, burning through hundreds of thousands of dollars in the span of a few months. Somewhere along the way, he might also sue a rival “company” for corporate spying to get extra money, and then it’s off to the investors again for more money.

I don’t know if he actually has any ideas.

It's not early, just early in relative terms.

I’m 25. I got a late start on getting my undergrad degree for a variety of reasons. But still, things turned out okay for me.

What did you end up majoring in at BYU? I don’t know if I’d consider the Army myself, but a degree does allow you eligibility to get into the officers programs.

Business Management with an emphasis in Finance

Yeah, I will be getting into the Warrant Officer program with the Army, which is not the usual officer people think about but it’s also not enlisted status. Basically, I get paid like an officer, but I get to fly helicopters.

The real payoff is down the road. After my first 8-year commitment, the Army will pay for me to go to a top graduate program (like Penn or NYU), then hold a top position at a company in the private sector they already have lined up for ~4 years, and then go back into the Army and manage a huge pool of money until I reach my 20 years for retirement. After that, I won’t have to look for a job because I will be highly recruited to do about anything I want.

This information came from the commander I spoke with. She says not many people know about this program the Army provides and that she has seen a few friends go through it. My finance degree is a rarity, apparently, which we will give me a leading edge when the time comes to apply. For now, though, I need to get accepted to the WOFT and then worry about those other things in eight years.

And yeah, you think got a late start obtaining a degree (let alone an MBA)? I’m 26 and feel like I am five years behind where I should be.

Don't worry I know that feeling

Not bad, if you can get it to work.

I’ll be coming out with about 20k in debt, which in relative terms is not bad because I know people in my school who leave with upwards of 100k in debt and then can’t find jobs. It’s a bit ridiculous. The financial aid is also frequently merit and not need-based, which adds another layer of complication to it. The system works for me, but I see a lot of people getting screwed by it.

I was fortunate at BYU.

I only took out a $5500 student loan my final year. The rest of my schooling was paid by FAFSA. I only got $4500 a year with the federal grant, but it only cost $2200 for tuition each semester. The main reason why I went to BYU was because of the low cost for a highly respected education. The undergrad business program was ranked No. 5 in 2009. Looks like it fell to No. 11 this year, but the ranking is heavily weighed on getting students jobs (which BYU is obviously struggling with).

I really feel sorry for a lot of other people, though. My situation isn’t great, but I also don’t have $30,000-60,000 worth of debt for just an undergrad degree. And when I get into the Army, they will wipe out my student loans completely.

by Wilder. on Mar 13, 2010 11:48 AM PST up reply actions

I have around $80k in debt

It might be a bit less, but its definitely over $75k. I make my loan payments every month (about $550 or so a month) and do my best to not think about it.

Curious to know the thoughts of others.

Is anyone else skeptical of all these recent Toyota crashes? I mean, they are happening ever day now and I find it more than a coincidence people are suddenly having these problems. I think it is to the point where people are trying to take advantage of the situation. The guy who was slowed down by the police officer the other day said he was going out of control at 81 mph. EIGHTY-ONE MILES PER HOUR! THAT IS INSANE! I HAVE NEVER DRIVEN SO FAST IN MY LIFE! Seriously, though, the guy said he couldn’t shift into neutral or turn the car off, which I find hard to believe.

And apparently people are banding together in a lawsuit against Toyota claiming the value of their cars are plummeting because of the recent problems. Well let’s think here: 1) cars are depreciating assets and will always be worth more today than tomorrow, and 2) the economy is bad, you really think people are going to pay premium prices for a vehicle? This reeks of a witch hunt.

and put about 3,000 miles on it.

Having not driven a Honda newer than 2002, I have to say that I was amazed by the quality of that Fusion. Everything was very well constructed, solidly built- there were no giant gaps in the interior panels, it was fun to drive, it ran great- I’d never been so impressed with an $18,000 car

So if the new Hondas are better then holy shit those cars must be the greatest piece of automobilia on Earth, because this Fusion was awesome.

But holy shit GM really figured out how to do interiors in the last few years- the interior was remarkably well built- better than the Fusions…honestly I liked the interior of that Malibu better than that of my parents 2004 Volvo. 5 years ago GM interiors were by and large giant pieces of cheap plastic- but man they really got their shit together. For a $25,000 car I was blown away by how nice the interior was- the materials were good, the gaps were tight, it looked great, it was comfortable…I mean wow.

As of 2012 Stability Control will be required on all cars

And Stability Control doesn’t work without ABS, so that will fix that

Side note: I hate Stability Control- that Malibu I drove had it on there and the roads were pretty bad off the freeway in Colorado Springs. I lost a little traction, but in a front wheel drive car going uphill (I was going uphill on a freeway onramp with no other traffic on the road) that’s really not a big deal- just let the foot off the gas, but the car starts flashing a giant light on the instrument panel “ICE POSSIBLE,” which

A) Is distracting- I’m trying to regain traction, don’t distract me by making me look at a giant flashing message on the instrument panel
B) I know what I’m doing, car so please just leave me alone and don’t start randomly distributing power around and applying brakes on individual wheels.

For one, I don’t like to spend any time thinking about the totally unattainable and for two, most of what makes them extraordinary is not possible to experience on an open road. It’s a big part of the reason I love cars like the 500 Abarth; the limits are low enough that you can get close to them on public roads and have fin driving them without going to a track.

I had an iPhone on the original launch day back in 2007...BUT

Have since moved on. I’m a bit of a smartphone nut: highlights from my various models include Sony Ericsson P800 (WAY ahead of its’ time), SE M600i (great little phone with a clever keyboard), HTC S630 (like a T-Mobile Dash v1 but with ATT-compatible 3G), Nokia E66, Nokia 3650, I-Mate Ultimate 8150 (early WinMo phone with ATT 3G support & VGA screen…but awful battery life) etc etc…

But the one I keep coming back to is my über-brick, my Nokia E90 Communicator. At 210g and truly a brick-shape, it’s a bit ungainly, but nothing else on the market can touch the combination of a) standard 10-key on the outside AND full 5-row QWERTY on the inside, b) 800×352 internal screen and yet a fully usable 320×240 outside, and magnesium-alloy casing with steel hinges. It’s a brutish beast, and I love it. It came out about the same time as the first iPhone, and yet if you either are in Europe/Asia (2100MHz 3G support) or don’t mind the lack of 3G (in the USA), it’s still unmatched some 3 years later. Not bad. (Granted, it was a nearly $1k phone when new [not that I paid that, I sniped one brand new off of eBay for $250(!)).

In my book, nothing can touch the Nokia Communicators—they predated the mainstream smartphone market by nearly a decade (yes, before the first Blackberry, etc)…the first one came out in 1996. Sadly, it appears that Nokia is going to let the line die in favor of other styles (sigh), but I intend to use mine until it gives out.
