USA vs. Canada Olympic Hockey Open Thread
Hockey! Olympics! Historic rivalry!! Fierce battle in the frozen North!!! Best of all the game is LIVE on the West Coast, finally. But not in HD (*in my area, at least) because NBC has to fuck it up somehow.
USA vs. Canada, 4:45 PM Pacific, MSNBC. Line: Canada -1½. Over/under: 5½. All-Time USA vs. Canada: 2-10-3.
At stake: first place in Group A and bye into the quarterfinals. SBN Preview.

The Olympics are the only time I actually give a shit about hockey.

Epic Fail by NBC
Taped delayed Russia/Czech on west coast. Now it overlaps with USA/Canada which is on MSNBC in non-HD. Fuckers.

It does for MSNBC
and a bunch of other channels. Why not just show everything live and in HD on a sister channel (USA, CNBC)

No.
But big games are. WAS vs. PIT is always good.
The playoffs are awesome all the way through. Seattle needs to get a team.
Ok that what I thought.
I normally watch some playoff hockey every year because it seems every series goes 7 games but for the most part I don’t follow at all.

Shooting the puck to far end from behind the center red line; it is icing if the puck crosses the opposing goal line untouched
it is also something you can shout while watching hockey and sound like you actually know something.
How old is he?
Federov is 40 years old for Russia. Teemmu Salanne (sp?) has to be getting up there for Finland.
Selänne turns 40 in July.
Brodeur turns 37 in May.

Can't argue with this suggestion
Enjoy Ovie before he kills himself/sutstains a career ending injury.
My team is rather unpopular around here, and I actually have no idea why I like them
other than that I’ve rooted for them since I was about five years old.
"I might be a butt hoarder...speed skating butts that is." - wazzu93
Yeah, if you haven't seen them play in like 6 or 7 years.
It's hard to convince people to let you eat them if you're an asshole. - Thingray
Or the ~three weeks before the Olyimpic break.
But that’s more of a slump than a style.
It's hard to convince people to let you eat them if you're an asshole. - Thingray
Bruins, and I LOATHE every other Boston team.
I’ve always enjoyed their aggressiveness and of course the greats I grew up watching.
"I might be a butt hoarder...speed skating butts that is." - wazzu93
My roommate grew up in Boston, so I kind of got sucked into watching/rooting for them.
I don’t watch hockey enough though. Chara is a great defenseman, and if you want to watch a great goalie, Tim Thomas is not a bad choice.
by seattle_since_81 on Feb 21, 2010 7:09 PM PST up reply actions
Caps are the easy choice,
but the Blackhawks will be around well after Ovie kills himself on a headfirst crash into a goalpost. Kane + Toews is the next huge exciting line, and I wish Zajac + Parise had their potential.
But you really can’t go wrong with either one. They are both exciting, talented teams that are tearing some shit up.
Or if you want a little more West Coast, try the Kings. They have a lot of speed and skill and young guys, and could really break out in a big way the next couple years. I know, LA, but just give them a shot.
It's hard to convince people to let you eat them if you're an asshole. - Thingray
Who else knew that Seattle had the first USA team to win the Stanley Cup in 1917?
It was the Seattle Metropolitans, who played from 1915 to 1924. Seattle needs an NHL team again.

by Aaron Campeau on Feb 21, 2010 7:09 PM PST up reply actions
I don't know if I want the Mariners or Seahawks to win a championship now.
It seems that whenever a pro team from Seattle wins a championship, they eventually leave.
I’m totally kidding of course. I don’t even know how I will react when either/both of these come true.
by seattle_since_81 on Feb 21, 2010 7:23 PM PST up reply actions
Well, goodness, that was fun.
The Canadians seemed to not be handling the puck particularly well, either.
Guess it is time to head back over to the Leno Channel to watch the girly ice dancing and the controversial Russians. meet me over in the other thread for bitching about costumes.
I'll go over there. I can't listen to any more Danish.
And I want to see the downhill clusterfuck that is skicross.
Well, it was on their home ice.
Although it is a little bit of an exaggeration.
2009 Safeco Field Record: 6-0 ; Overall Safeco Field Record: 10-4
It's more than a little bit of an exaggeration.
The 1980 USSR hockey team was better than most (if not all) NHL teams. The 190 USA hockey team was made up of college players. That was one of the most unlikely upsets in sports history. This is a surprise, but not earth-shattering or anything close to it.
by Aaron Campeau on Feb 21, 2010 7:15 PM PST up reply actions
I am sure plenty of Canadians were still expecting to win this game though.
2009 Safeco Field Record: 6-0 ; Overall Safeco Field Record: 10-4
Well sure, but to put this in even the same stratosphere as the US beating the USSR in 1980 is insulting to my intelligence and to the 1980 US hockey team
by Aaron Campeau on Feb 21, 2010 7:17 PM PST up reply actions
I agree with you on that.
And to be fair, the guy who was captain of the 1980 US team basically told the broadcaster that you can’t compare today’s US team to the 1980 team.
But plenty of Canadians are still probably pissed about this.
2009 Safeco Field Record: 6-0 ; Overall Safeco Field Record: 10-4
As one of the few here old enough to have seen that as a little kid, I'd say that comparision is totally ridiculous.
It was a transcendent event, so much more than the game. Just watching the highlights in NBC stupid recap earlier made me tear up.
It would be like the McDonald's All-American team beating the NBA All-Pro team
if the NBA All-Pro team played together every game year-round year after year.
by Aaron Campeau on Feb 21, 2010 7:20 PM PST up reply actions
I haven't really been watching the Olympics but the USA must be the third or fourth best team there after Canada, Sweden and maybe Russia
I don’t see how it’s that big of an upset.
I'm not sure about that
but if they are then it’s even less of an upset.
by Eyeball Kid on Feb 21, 2010 10:02 PM PST up reply actions
Oh yeah, it's totally comparable.
Because, you know, Canada is like the best team on the ice now, and the USA is still this little upstart country in Hockey. Didn’t the Canada Team beat the NHL All Stars 6-0? Oh wait, Team Canada is pretty much an NHL All Star team.

Oh shits!

Just read the thread. Stupid people who want to watch TLC instead of olympic hockey while working out!
Hard work never killed nobody, but I won't take my chances.
Yeah, it was non-stop action from the beginning to the end.
Canada was firing pucks all game long, but Ryan Miller was superhuman.
Woohoo!
that BC ad reminded me of an old CBC/HBO mockumentary, and made me go looking, and I found that someone has put The Canadian Conspiracy up on youtube.
So as a low-level hockey fan, I just have to say: Holy Shit.
That was amazing. Forget the result (woooooooo!), that was one of the most intense games, and it was played at another level to the other Olympic games I’ve seen. I suppose you can complain about the defense; this is one of the few games where 8 goals scored and yet both goalies played well (though Miller was way better than Brodeur, obviously).
I’m just really glad I got to see that, and it gives me more of an insight into why so many of you fucks love hockey.

USA has a good opportunity to make the medal round.
They only need to go through Finland or the Czech Republic. Sweden, Russia, and Canada are all on the other side of the bracket. This was the best scenario possible for team USA.
According to Shannon
Michael Saunders arrived this morning to find that someone had thoughtfully posted a big photo of the USA win in his locker.
