Bargain Bin Rumor/Transaction Thread
It's getting to be that time of the year. When players are starting to get desperate for any sort of deal that the 600 pound chick looks like J-Lo. Or, as the Nationals call it, shopping season!
Hudson wants more money from Nationals
Since becoming a free agent, Hudson has asked for $9 million, but the Nationals are not willing to give him that kind of money.
This past season, Hudson, 32, made a base salary of $3.38 million, but with incentives, he received close to $7 million as a member of the Dodgers.
According to a published report, the Nationals have offered Hudson $3 million, with incentives that could bring the value of the contract to $4 million.
Nationals are the leading candidate for a consistent 2-3 win player and they're offering $3 million? I wish we didn't already have a 2B.
Marlins offer Branyan a 1-year deal
ESPN.com is reporting that the Marlins have offered free-agent slugger Russell Branyan a one-year contract "with a low base and lots of incentives." Considering the Marlins were looking at a Spring Training competition of Gaby Sanchez and Logan Morrison for the starting job at first base, those incentives probably hinge on games played.
So luckily, it looks like Branyan has a major league offer out there. Unfortunately, it looks to be a one year, largely incentive-based deal, with his job constantly threatened in a place where he can't DH to stay healthy. I've heard rumors that the Mets might be interested. Hopefully they get desperate and don't make him take a physical. Except I wouldn't wish the Mets on anyone.
Elsewhere, Johnny Damon, John Smoltz, Pedro Martinez and Adam Kennedy (1.5-2.0 win 2B/3B? Anyone?) remain teamless.

Woo, Go Marlins!
I hope this will be another one of their low risk, high reward deals. This would also be a somewhat home town deal as well, which will be good for him.

Interesting...
“Nationals are the leading candidate for a consistent 2-3 win player and they’re offering $3 million? I wish we didn’t already have a 2B.”
If I remember correctly we already have a 2-3 win player making less than $3 million.

We signed an indy league catcher?
John Parham. College backstop, can’t hit much except for one year, never drafted.
News!
Also the White Sox have Daniel Cabrera now. I don’t know when that happened.

Money fixes all these problems.
Hey everyone, Follow me on Twitter!, check out My Baseball Blog, and Last.fm me!
Am I the only one who feels like the Mariners might be done?
I could see a pitcher signing, but I don’t see any major trades or signings (which would mean cutting players, or a trade to make room).
The recent moves seem to suggest that there are no big moves coming to position players. And considering the depth of the backend of our rotation, I’m not sure there is much value in the free agent pitchers out there. The front office seems wiling to put pressure on some players to step up and perform.
It looks to me like the front office was put on a serious budget, and they did an amazing job with what they had.
(but I still want Bedard)
I didn't think this was deserving of its own fanshot, but it's still worth mentioning for schadenfreude.
Putz “never really had a physical” with the Mets.
"When the trade went down last year, I never really had a physical with the Mets," said Putz. "I had the bone spur (in the right elbow). It was discovered the previous year in Seattle, and it never got checked out by any other doctors until I got to spring training, and the spring training physical is kind of a formality. It was bugging me all through April, and in May I got an injection. It just got to the point where I couldn’t pitch. I couldn’t throw strikes, my velocity was way down."And, apparently, the Mets told him to keep it quiet:
"I knew that I wasn’t right. I wasn’t healthy. The toughest part was having to face the media and tell them that you feel fine, even though you know there’s something wrong and they don’t want you telling them that you’re banged up."
These reactions seem familiar!
That's amazing, and too bad for J.J. if it's all true. And fits with the Beltran knee surgery mess.
Didn’t the M’s agree to not do an MRI on Bedard’s shoulder before signing him, or am I completely inventing that memory?
Putz was probably my favorite mariner for a couple of those terrible Bavasi years
I hope he does better next year.

He talked a lot how about how bad the clubhouse was in general
But as Larry Stone (I believe) put it, the 2009 Mariners clubhouse turned out to be more fun than Disneyland or something to that extent. And the Mets? 90+ losses.
I think he alluded to Ichiro being selfish or too asian or something though.
my blog: foul weather fans - seattle sports coverage
Stone
He links to his original article about Putz.
When I asked him specifically to comment on Ichiro, Putz said: "It’s hard to argue with 200 hits every year, and a lifetime, what, .320 hitter [actually, .331]. I just think there’s so much more he can do that doesn’t happen. I would have liked to have seen him take more chances on the basepaths. It seems like he was only going to steal a bag when he was absolutely sure. I don’t think he even realizes how good he is at stealing bags.
“I don’t know. Two-hundred hits isn’t easy, and to do it eight straight years, it’s hard to argue. You can’t really knock the guy for his work ethic. His routine is ridiculous. Everything is the same every single day. I mean, he’s prepared to play. But … "
Every player deserves criticism because there isn't a perfect player out there
I don’t think Putz is saying that Ichiro makes the mariners worse.
Ichiro probably isn’t a “good” teammate. I’m ok with that. He’s good and everybody likes that part of him. He might not mentor Saunders or help people get along but he’s good enough where its totally fine if he doesn’t.
by Edgar for Pres on Feb 4, 2010 11:18 AM PST up reply actions
Putz's criticism is stupid
He basically calling Ichiro a bad teammate because he won’t play more stupid
What he said about ichiro was retarded
the phrase he repeated over and over was “He should have done more”. Kept saying that Ichiro should have been diving more, stealing more, hitting the ball harder. This is beyond stupid, and the stupidity goes beyond the fact that stealing is only helpful with a high success rate and that diving is dangerous and leads to extra base hits.

Ackley tells the Everett Herald that he thought he might be traded this winter.
"I saw guys getting traded in the offseason, and it makes you realize you might not be here for long," Ackley said last week after a workout at the Mariners’ training facility. "I thought that being drafted this year that it would be less likely they would move me, but you’re always kind of thinking about it."
Um, aren’t we barred from trading any draft pick until one year after either he was draft or when he signs the contract with us? I think Ackley can’t be traded until this summer.
He could be a "player to be named later"
But he won’t be.
...and now I'm here
Isn't his contract a little unusual though? Professional contract or however you put it, would that allow him to be traded now?
I’m not making the argument he might be traded, just curious as to how his particular deal effects that situation.
It would surprise me.
MLB probably wouldn’t want to risk the Nats trading Strasburg, and they have the same type of contract.
...and now I'm here
Probably not much
he’s the best player in our minors, and likely better than some of the players on the big league roster. He’d be on the 40-man of any team he’s on.

Whoa, the A's just Dana Eveland designated for assignment?
This THT article makes it look like he’s waiver eligible. He’d be a great waiver pick up for anyone if that’s the case.
And to think we traded Rafy Soriano for basically a Eveland clone who was more than twice as expensive and possibly worse.

He's been pretty bad.
If he comes for free and can be stashed somewhere, then I guess it’s harmless. As Evan alludes to in that piece, though, he’s probably going to have to be in the NL to have success.
Jim Street Mariners Inbox: "Are the Mariners really actively shopping Jose Lopez or is that just a rumor?"
Separating fact from fiction these days with bloggers and twitters saying pretty much what they want when they want without worrying about being accurate is very difficult.
Oh Jim, don’t you remember what you wrote last week?
Why haven’t we heard anything about some of the better hitting players from Tacoma, like Chris Shelton, Jerry Owens, and Prentice Redmond? Can we expect them to contribute at the Major League level?
— Jerry P., Kirkland, Wash.
All three will be competing for reserve spots on the 25-man roster during Spring Training, but I would anticipate that they will be returning for another season at Tacoma. That being said, unforeseen circumstances at the big league level could prompt a promotion for any of them at any given time.
This question was later removed, seeing as Shelton, Owens and Redman are no longer with the Mariners. You can see the cache of it here
The journalistic integrity of Jim Street is unassailable. How dare you!
It’s these damn bloggers and twitters (if he doesn’t know they’re called tweeters, he probably shouldn’t be talking about it) that are messing everything up for the two-source-minimum journalists.

Verlander gets a 5 year/$80MM deal
Hmm, more than Felix. Link
My Mariners blog SodoMojo, My Twitter Feed
While the Mariners have locked up Felix, and the Tigers have locked up Verlander, the Giants are having a harder time with their Ace.
Mychael Urban of CSNBayArea.com reports that talks between the Giants and Tim Lincecum aren’t going well.
Lincecum asked for $13 million and was offered $8 million when arbitration figures were exchanged last month. They already appear destined for a hearing, one that Lincecum will surely win, but multiple sources have told Urban that San Francisco’s young ace has dismissed several two-year deals from the club. Proposing a two-year deal is telling, not only because he will have two more years of arbitration after the contract, but it may play into concerns about his durability. That’s pretty much the only leg the Giants have to stand on when a pitcher wins consecutive Cy Young awards, but this could get more contentious than they would have hoped.
FUCK ERIC BYRNES FUCK ERIC BYRNES!
If Lincecum becomes a free agent and signs with his hometown team I won't know what to do with myself.

I remember a bit of shit talking, or rather not nice comments made by both Lincecum and his father over being snubbed by the M’s in the draft, and how they both took it a bit personally.
Of course, new and extremely awesome administration, which incidentally traded away the guy they picked instead, might be a draw.

So Rod Barajas
Floating out there. Not hearing many rumors. CHONE projects his bat at 1.7 WAR. A bit generous after a down season, but his defense is also generally well-regarded. Some attempts at quantifying catcher defense were done by Driveline Mechanics here. As you can see, Barajas seems overall to be a far cry better than Johnson and Bard, particularly at blocking pitches (something that is fairly obvious having seen all 3 play).
His bat doesn’t play very well in Safeco, and I don’t know exactly how much he’d cost (the Mets may want him now), but am I crazy for entertaining the possibility? Seems like he could add a cheap win or so while not pushing out anyone too valuable.
FUCK THE ANGELS!
Well Jim Street posted this on FB
But a new contract with a low base salary and high incentives could be the way to go.
I have now heard that the deal is a one-year $1.5 million base salary contract that includes a shipload of incentives. Bedard, you might recall, made $7.5 million last season. At his age — he will be 29 on March 5 — most of his career is in front of him and he could use this season as a springboard to a multi-year contract next year.
And according to my good buddy Kirby Arnold of the Everett Herald, Bedard could soon be on is way to Peoria, Ariz.
I’m getting all giddy just thinking about it.
You got slurved!
I have a strong desire to carpet bomb every single commentator in that link.
Awesome news about Bedard though.
You just pointed out another inaccurate Jim Street report

Nope. He will be 31 on March 5th.

In Matthew's post on Verlander new contract over at fangraphs,
he mentioned the Tigers salary-dumping Miguel Cabrera this year. Various comments poo-pooed that idea, but I wonder if Jack Z could have something like this in mind. It would seem to be one possible explanation for his hesitance to spend the money most people think he has.
Are there any contracts out there that teams might be looking to move mid-season?
Lyle Overbay

But Overbay's probably available now.
I’m thinking more along the lines of someone on a team that thinks they’re in it now, and would only be looking to move someone once midseason comes around.
I'm not sure if the Padres consider themselves in it
but doesn’t this sound like Adrian Gonzalez’s situation? If the M’s found a way to get him, I would be all sorts of happy at the same time.

Seems like he wants to be here-yay!. Also, I didn’t know Seattle was thinking of building a complex in the D.R.
They already have one.
It’s unclear given the context, but my guess is that the M’s are thinking of building a new one to replace the old, which was likely built back in the era when we didn’t care all that much about our Dominican scouting and thought the whole thing was overrated relative to Venezuela.
Some teams do have multiple complexes in the Dominican Republic, but I don’t know that the M’s would be eager to do that given that they already had seven affiliates in the U.S. whereas every other team has six, I think.

“I still feel there is a quality market for Johnny Damon,” Boras said, “and I’m negotiating with a number of teams. There are three teams out there that if they don’t have Johnny Damon, they’re not winning the division. And Jarrod Washburn says he's gonna take his ball and go home if you don't give him what he wants.
According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com, free agent lefty Jarrod Washburn may opt to retire if he doesn’t find a suitable offer.
Washburn has drawn only mild interest this winter, but it seems silly to think he can’t find some kind of low-base, incentive-laden salary. Sure, the 35-year-old had a tough time down the stretch, tallying an ugly 7.33 ERA in eight starts after being traded to the Tigers. But he was 9-9 overall with a 3.78 ERA in 28 starts and there are plenty of desperate MLB clubs.
