OT -- Countdown to Spring Training edition, Feb.13
Organization Pitchers & catchers First workout
Seattle Mariners Feb. 17 Feb. 18
So, ready?
Who all (besides Mark Sobba) is going this year?
Anyone have spring training stories? I watched Chris Snelling eat dinner one-handed because (big surprise) the other was in a cast ... I saw Arthur Rhodes be a big old mushball around his toddler daughter ... in 2000, when wandering around the complex one late afternoon, I snagged a beaten-up old baseball from under the picnic tables outside the weight room -- the baseball I then took to Fan Fest the following spring to have signed by that new right fielder ...

I might be going but it depends on if I can find a job first
My favorite spring training story was from about four years ago, maybe five. I was with a friend who had never been before, and in the first inning I was telling him how it worked – starters only play a few innings, then they leave and it’s a rotating cast of kids from there on out. This particular game was pretty brutal, if I recall, the M’s gave up something like 10 runs in the first inning, so by the fifth after everyone left, my friend was ready to bail. We go over to McDuffy’s, and there at a table next to us are Bret Boone and Richie Sexson, showered, changed and already drinking – and Boone was making Sexson fetch everything. Drinks, food, bets at the OTB, you name it, Boone was making Sexson go get it.
I kept overhearing Boone tell people who came up for autographs (I’m not an autograph person so I didn’t really even bother) that he was having a “brutal” day at the track, too – at one point I think he was down about $3K.
NPR piece on men's shopping habits.
big surprise, they like to “go in, kill the first thing they see, and drag it out of the store”, unlike [most] women, who will browse and ask questions.
A college professor who studies buying habits opined that stores need to do more to get men to actually stay in the store awhile …. “Men tend to go grocery shopping at night when it is not crowded … that’s when you should have a beer tasting”
Apparently some men’s clothing stores have started having pizza and beer nights …
I did a study for my thesis on Wal-Mart.
Wally’s has TVs all over the store that basically advertise in really short snippets (like 20-second spots) all day long. The ads were focused pretty directly on women. My bet is that women are specifically targeted because of these kinds of habits.

That's definitely how I shop.
But if I’m in one of those situations where I’m trying to decide between a few different things, I usually arrive at the store having already done the research online or whatever. I don’t exactly trust a salesperson to give me unbiased answers, I guess.

Just what the prof said :)
he thought putting in terminals in stores so that men could research without having to ask a person for help would be good
Maybe.
But see, I wouldn’t necessarily trust the terminal either, if it was a store operated thing.

Wasn't it like Circuit City or something that had fake websites from competing stores to say "see our price is cheaper!" if the customer asked.
Notice how Circuit City doesn't really exist anymore.

This is exactly how I shop and it obviously annoys whichever female acquaintance I happen to be shopping with
Because I’m ready to go after about 5 minutes and they want to linger around for another hour.
I don't generally ask questions, but I linger like crazy in stores unless I know exactly what I want.
by Aaron Campeau on Feb 13, 2010 12:01 PM PST up reply actions
I'm the exact opposite
I love to go grocery shopping. I’ll stop in at a grocery store almost every day. But then, I’m basically a foodie, so they’re like nirvana to me. Although I also prefer to go at night, just to avoid long lines and all those people who are so inconsiderate as to be in the store at the same time as me.
I like clothes shoping as well, but don’t tend to spend a lot on them. Only for myself, though. Shopping with a woman is excruciating.

Dating myself, but me in a record store?
I could spend hours, but yeah, with most of the rest, it’s just in and out. I love shopping online!
by hairofthedawg on Feb 13, 2010 5:47 PM PST up reply actions
That is the only kind of store that I linger in.
I suppose that might be because it’s the only store where I don’t necessarily know what I want. If I’m clothes shopping, I’ve generally identified what I need before I go, and then it’s just a matter of satisficing. Is this shirt sort of blue? Check. We’re done here.
Record shopping isn’t like that, of course, and picking through vinyl is one of life’s great pleasures (at least to me). The good thing is that it gives me something of a window into my wife’s mind, and why she gets annoyed when I want to leave whatever store we’re in after 3 minutes.
Book stores too... I just don't go to them as often.
This is what happens when you move away from Seattle. Get way too many books via good ol’ Amazon now.
Again, this is why Portland is so great: Jackpot records and Powell’s are one block apart.
Depends on what I'm buying.
I buy almost everything online except clothes, which I tend to spend a while checking and considering.
I'm a woman and I hate shopping
I honestly do not understand the appeal of going to a mall or store just to browse around. I can’t spend more than an hour in a store/mall without going crazy.
I definitely don't shop like a girl
I am not a fan of browsing. I do a lot of browsing online when I’m bored, but when I go somewhere, I really need to have a clear idea of what I’m there for so I can get it and get the hell out…..
~I once gave Jose Canseco $15. ~
Oddly, though
If I’m with someone and it’s they’re shopping trip, I don’t mind browsing – it’s like the pressure’s off or something. I have zero intent to buy, I can just look at shiny stuff without having to be bothered to spend money on it. But if it’s for me, it’s one and done.
~I once gave Jose Canseco $15. ~
As far as that goes, it depends on my mood.
Sometimes I thinking “just pick one so we can go” and others I’m actually helping them pick things out.. I guess the ‘inner-girl’ comes out
I have one friend for whom I end up being the coat-holding, shopping assistant
“no, I like that one … it looks good”
I don't goto to buy something unless I research it - Know exactly what and where it is so I don't have to ask questions.

This is interesting to me

I have recently developed quite a taste for Baltic porters.
One of my favorites I’ve had recently is Utenos Porter, but I also like the standards-Black Boss, Zywiec, Okocim. It’s quickly becoming one of my favorite styles, but the problem is the language barrier; the bottle shops I go to tend to have a ton of Eastern European beers, but they labels aren’t generally translated so I have no idea if I’m buying a dark lager (a style I don’t tend to love and certainly don’t crave when I am looking for a porter) or even a regular Czech style lager some of the time. And because Baltic porters are so-let’s go with “flavorful”-if they’re done poorly they can be pretty much undrinkable.
So, any favorites? Suggestions for good domestic micros in the style are are welcome, but I am especially interested in Czech, Polish, Ukranian, Russian and Lithuanian examples of the style Ratebeer isn’t much help because, as with most things, the top 50-100 most highly rated beers are ones I’ve had or ones that are impossible to find.
1554 for a domestic that's fairly easy to find
Moose Drool as well is pretty good, and of course the old standby, Black Butte Porter. I’m sure you’re already familiar with all those, though, right?
The Ram in Kent has a great one, Disorder Porter that you buy in growlers, and Diamond Knot brewery down in Mukilteo has several good beers, although not great in my opinion. I’ve only tried a few of them though, and since they’ve got many to choose from, it’s worth a try if you live in that area.

Have you tried Baltika?
Specifcally, Baltika 6 is their porter. It’s a big Russian brewery, and they’ve got a lot of different brews that are numbered – 3, 6, 9, 10, etc. The 6 is the Baltic porter, and it’s not bad.
Thanks to a lot of Russian immigrants, this beer is everywhere down here in T-town which is why I ask. Some people really, really love this too. Ratebeer users aren’t in love with it, but it’s an above average baltic porter. It’s got distro in the northwest, so I’m sure you’ll find it without trouble, but if you want some, let me know.
The Lompoc down here in Portland recently debuted their Batch 69 Baltic Porter.
Smoky, dense, and delicious.

12 hours in there has already been a death, a malfunction during the single most important moment of the game and had to postpone events due to rain.
Part of the fancyshmancy indoor torch didn't rise from the floor-- but it still came off ok
I thought the postponement at Whistler was too much snow. Hardly the first Olympics with weather problems. Back in ‘80(?) we got to see lots and lots of the required dances because the skiers couldn’t go, and there was nothing else to fill time. It was swell.
The postponement at whistler was too much rain. Quite a different matter.
El Nino years suck for Whistler.
Given the El Nino, I'm sure it's great somewhere. Just not here.
Last El Nino was the year we booked a cabin at Whistler, had some friends come over from the UK. It was a ‘ski in/ski out’ cabin, but there was no snow anywhere close. The lower half of Whister/Blackcomb were closed, and we heard from so many Californians that they could hardly get to the mountains at Tahoe because there was so much snow. I’m guessing Squaw Valley’s doing OK right now.
Death and bad weather and stupid NBC aside
I’ve been greatly enjoying it all so far, most of the events have been really competitive which is what I care about most.
The torch thing not unflolding properly at the last moment of the ceremonies?
Not enough snow and too much rain that might hamper some of the events?
That USA girl skier with the bruised leg?
What could possibly go wrong?

Thankfully now that Bioware seems to have a game engine they like
the turnaround for ME3 should be much shorter than ME2. I think I read that we should expect it around January-March 2011.
How is ME2?
The repetitiveness of environments/side missions and mako bullshit on ME1 really pissed me off.
Way more streamlined.
It retains the great character work, plot, and overall writing but does a ton to clean up the game mechanics. And yes, the Mako is gone.
There’s a sort of resource mining element now that involves you visiting various worlds and scanning them for resources you can (and should) use to upgrade the Normandy. It’s much quicker and even results in sidequests popping up every now and then.
But its still not open ended dammit!
I want to wander!

by Graham MacAree on Feb 15, 2010 9:03 AM PST up reply actions
I feel this would require a game size of several TB
Considering Mass Effect covers the Milky Way.
Here is me not caring how technically difficult that would be.
by Graham MacAree on Feb 15, 2010 9:33 AM PST up reply actions
Shhhh
If Bioware hears you say this they’ll turn Mass Effect 3 into an MMO like they did with Knights of the Old Republic 3.
MMO's have the potential to be totally awesome
All you have to do is take out the whole part about thousands of humans playing together.
Planetary scanning was way better than the Mako grindfest.
The hacking was better than the QTEs from the first game.
Eh scanning was ever bit as tedious
I better get some kind of reward in ME3 for having 200k of everything.
[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]
I'm not alone in hating the scanning mini game
and considering it took me almost as long to beat ME2 as it did ME1 on the first play through, I would say that it’s just as much in the way of tedious padding as driving the Mako.
[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]
You're not compelled to do the scanning on every planet.
If you’re looking to upgrade, you mine resources until you hit that point, and then you stop. There’s no achievement locked up with depleting every world’s resources. Soon as you have enough resources you do a simple orbit, find out of there’s an anomaly that triggers a side quest, and move on if there’s not.
In ME1 you had to land on every planet to determine if there was a worthwhile sidequest. In ME2 that was obvious within the first two seconds of orbit.
Eh but I was still scanning for minerals
because I didn’t have enough of a certain type for one last upgrade. Maybe if they’d provided something that told you the composition of the planet or whatever.
Even then, if I had done it the absolute minimum it was still duller than shit. At least driving around on planets broke up the pacing.
[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]
I only scanned the rich planets.
And if you use the gridlines and rotate around the planet one level at a time it really becomes quick.
Which I also did
I tried every conceivable tactic to make it less tedious and speed the process up. Even trigger tapping.
[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]
I also only bothered sending out probes to really high spikes
and again, still tedious
[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]
I guess the reason it wasn't tedious for me is I interspersed scanning throughout the storyline
When I started to get bored with scanning/exploring I went and did a storyline mission.
But again
this is what I did, I would scan the sector I was in for the recruitment mission and only that sector, then I would do the story mission and I still found it tedious.
It’s filler content made to extend a 20 or so hour game to a 30 or so hour game. I would’ve been just as happy doing without it.
[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]
You spent ten hours scanning for resources?
I think I might have spent three hours tops the entire playthrough.
Superior version once again
if only the PC version of the first had released alongside the 360 version I might not be locked in.

It's not nearly as short, not nearly as repetitive, and there are no vehicles
If I had one complaint, it would be that I wish they had a wider array of techs/biotics to work with instead of a couple you use on shields, a couple on armor and a couple on unarmored people, because the fighting gets a little stale after the first playthrough. But that’s a minor quibble, it’s a much improved game.

I never thought this would happen but: I have just ordered an XBox 360.
ME2 just looked too good to say no to. The question is, should I bother to buy and play ME1 before ME2 or go straight in for ME2?
The bundle I got is quite good, it was £140 for an Arcade and PGR4, GOW 2, Fable 2, Halo 3, Halo Wars and Forza 2. Are any of those games worth playing? I’ve heard that Fable 2 is supposed to be very good but I literally know nothing about XBox’s as I’ve always been a Sony gamer.
Also, should I bother paying for XBL [I wont be playing games online] and should I buy a HDD?
I still plan on my PS3 being my primary console as that’s what all of my friends play.
You really, really should play ME1 first.
ME2 by itself is pretty good, but import your character from ME1 and it becomes an amazing experience.
Fable 2 was okay (the end absolutely ruined it for me). Dragon Age: Origins is excellent. Forza is a great Gran Turismo alternative.
I bought Dragon Age: Origins for the PS3 and for some reason I don't like it.
I think the lack of being able to explore a world map killed it for me sadly.

Did you have an original Xbox?
If you didn’t go pick up a copy of Knights of the Old Republic I and II, which is backwards compatible on the 360.
I hear the PC version is the way to go on Dragon Age
I got the 360 version and absolutely wish I had gone PC.
[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]
I'm told that DA PC is like an entirely different game
and given how meh I am so far on the 360 version I could believe this.
[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]
I'd imagine the battle system would be very difficult to translate to a console smoothly
I’ve never played the 360 version, but I’ll bet that’s the biggest problem with it.
I have a feeling that is a big part of it
Battles are just a mess. I want to be able to pause them properly like in KOTOR but the game doesn’t cooperate.
Also their attempt at apeing the Gambit System from FFXII doesn’t work the way I’d like.
[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]
My roomate plays all of his games on 360 while I use PC
And we play a lot of the same games… I honestly can’t say I’ve seen anything that plays/looks better on Xbox.
I can't imagine playing ME2 without ME1
The continuity is amazing—almost every decision you make in ME1 has some sort of effect in ME2 to a greater or lesser degree.
I have today purchased my XBox with 8 games including ME1 + ME2!
Now I need a spare month off to actually play all of this.

MLBN is giving Ken Burns some promo spots.
For some reason, I always expected Ken Burns to look like Studs Turkel.
Also, I’m not sure why MLBN doesn’t just add a scorebug to the screen for every old game. They could do it easily enough.

Yes. Annoyingly so.
Danny is having a hard day — a AAA pitcher who can’t throw strikes, a AA pitcher who can’t throw strikes, Dibble alternating pitches wide of the zone, and right down the middle of the plate … he’s up, he’s down, he’s catching them three feet out, three feet up ….
It's 7:30 on the first Saturday night of the Olympics.
KING is currently showing Northwest Backroads.
Nice job, NBC.
This is getting ridiculous.
The only thing I saw on CNBC were two horrendously lopsided women’s hockey games. Yes, I understand some of the events have been postponed, but they really seem indifferent to getting ratings. They also seem indifferent to all the money they paid to acquire the rights to the games.
I'm really glad I get to watch the Olympics on CTV this year.
Hooray antenna!
Is that the light at the end of the tunnel, or the headlights of an oncoming train?
Here's a question. What do people view as their greatest musical "guilty pleasure?"
A song that belongs to a genre that one would normally disparage and find distasteful, but despite that one finds catchy and/or entertaining. Also something one would find hard to admit liking to friends, etc.
For me, and this is rather embarrassing — “Tik Tok” by Kesha. The kind of mindless pop music I usually love to hate and don’t find entertaining, but goddamn, why is this so catchy? Fuck!
I'm not very guilty about what I like. I'll defend it all pretty much everything.
Including stuff people might look down on me for, such as some first album Good Charlotte, early Linkin Park, a 3OH!3 song or two, and even a dash of Avril Lavigne.
Linkin Park is a good one.
I enjoy their music but don’t admit it that often. Lots of people love to hate on LP.
They sort of lead in the rap/rock/nu metal fad that was 2000-2003
I am so glad that era is over.

There is no such thing as a guilty pleasure in my opinion
If you like something, you like it. Who the hell cares if it’s not what they “should” like?

I whole-heartedly agree with this statement.
2009 Safeco Field Record: 6-0 ; Overall Safeco Field Record: 10-4
I don't disagree, but I tend to classify "guilty pleasures"
as things you objectively know are bad and like anyways. Like Kenny Rogers or Next Friday, in my case; I can’t defend it, but I like it.
by Aaron Campeau on Feb 14, 2010 12:40 AM PST up reply actions 1 recs
I understand what you are saying
More or less music you know have all the qualities of suck, like Fall Out Boy, but you find their song catchy nonetheless.
But I think a lot of people also define “guilty pleasure” as something that isn’t hip to like for whatever reason, whether it be that the band has gone mainstream, or is just very generic/corporatized from the start. I remember DMZ on USSM a couple years ago in his music post referring to Snow Patrol’s song “Chasing Cars” or their album “Eyes Open” as his guilty pleasure. I do not think there is anything objectively bad about that song, and if I heard the song and had no idea it had been played to death by both alternative and pop radio, I would enjoy it. Would that fit your definition?
2009 Safeco Field Record: 6-0 ; Overall Safeco Field Record: 10-4
I haven't heard the song, but I'd only consider something I know is bad art to be a guilty pleasure.
I love Lady Gaga and am in no way ashamed to admit it.

That is good to have no shame.
Admitting to liking an artist will sometimes get you flamed on here though, like when I said I liked Dave Matthews Band or Pearl Jam (which I still like just as much despite the flaming).

This is funny.
My friends and I had this discussion Thursday night, which resulted in one of them doing a Barry Manilow impression of “Mandy” and then later about three or four of us singing “Honesty” by Billy Joel. Soon after, it was decided that we would do karaoke in the near future.
Billy Joel is probably that guilty pleasure for me, in a weird way, because I grew up listening to him because of my parents and at one point had most if not all of his albums before I seriously got into music. Although, when that song came up, it had been about ten years since I had recently listened to him.
Incidentally, I was at a bar tonight and they were playing “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant” and I swear at least 70% of the bar was singing along as loud as they could. I could understand if it had been “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me” or “Big Shot” or “Uptown Girl”, but seriously, “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant?”

But I totally agree about Billy Joel being awesome.
Seeing him and Elton John at Key Arena? Best $200 I’ve ever spent.
It's high up there for me.
The piano solo in the middle was one of the things that made me want to play in the first place, no that I got very far. Also the intro to Miami 2017.
But yeah, I used to listen to 52nd Street and Glass Houses pretty much all the time.

52nd street is one of my favorite Billy Joel albums
but mostly for the lesser known songs. I love Zanzibar and Rosalinda’s Eyes.
Agreed.
Those are both quality, but I also get Stiletto going every now and then and I had a period of about a month a while back when I had Half a Mile Away running through my head almost nonstop.

Stiletto is another great one.

That's Thursday.
But thanks :)

Whatever the song, it's always weird when 70%+ people start singing loudly.
I will never forget being in a bar in a small town in Somerset, England when the Darkness’ ‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love’ came on the jukebox. What seemed like the entire town, who’d been bitching about each other the whole night, put down their pints and sung (screamed) the song in unison. It felt like a cult thing. I was actually a bit creeped out; if I hadn’t been, I might’ve joined in.
This happened to me in a Five Guys a couple weeks ago with Enya's "Come Sail Away"
The whole crew went full Cartman, and by halfway through a god half of the customers were singing too.
It was horrifyingly entertaining.

Man... The Darkness... whatever happened to them?
Still, I bet it was roughly as surreal seeing rural townsfolk in England belting out “I Believe in Thing Called Love” as it was to see a bunch of kids in their early twenties singing one of Billy Joel’s lesser known greatest hits.
I mean, I had a friend in high school who used to burst into “You May Be Right” with me whenever on or the other of us used that phrase, but it seemed somehow more age appropriate then.

So after a five years I finally have a bike again
Any good rides in Seattle? I prefer off road ones as opposed to urban riding because people fucking suck at driving.
Burke-Gilman is a good starting point, or just a good ride by itself. Especially if you're getting back into riding shape.
It’s fairly level. Here’s a page with a lot of links to trail maps. King County, Seattle, Snohomish, etc. Most show the sharrows/lanes/trails.
I’ve found a couple good ones off veloroutes, all I’ve done so far is search Seattle and look at peoples maps. It’s pretty cool, gives you a profile of the elevation along your route. Once you open a map, it first shows you an overview that you can’t do anything with. To zoom in, click on the title of the map at the top of the page (probably obvious but I didn’t notice this the first few times, the turn by turn stuff is pretty handy). Lots of cyclists put in maps with back streets to avoid arterials, pedestrian bridges, you name it. Some nice rides in there.
Maybe google mountain to sound? I don’t know anything about that one yet, just by reputation.
Burke-Gilman can get crowded though
If you want a less stressful ride, I’d recommend the Centennial Trail from Snohomish to Marysville. It’s pretty far away from Seattle, but there’s a lot fewer people to dodge and the countryside is really nice. If you start at Snohomish it’s a level ride for the first 3/4 of the trail, then it gets a little more hilly after Lake Stevens, but overall it’s pretty easy.
And I only ride on hard surface, so I'm completely unfamiliar with the mountain bike trails.
I’m not sure if you meant off road as in dirt trails, or non-motorized vehicle paths. And if you ride on the Gilman, watch your ass when you cross streets with the street on your left, cars turning right on red lights are seriously gunning for my life and limb. Especially where the Gilman crosses 25th Ave just north of University Mall, I hate that intersection.
Woodinville/Redmond to Issaquah is a pretty good one.

I assume the targets are further away or something, but my god, the men were terrible. At least the women shoot straight.

what was the reason for the umpire congregation in the first? I don’t think it was explained.
Luckily Tony has it all figured out, hits when needed, conservative run scoring, leave nothing to waste.
It’s like the low carbon footprint run scoring scheme, I like this guy. Rather enjoyable comments there, Mark appears a little incredulous but it’s still early in the thread yet.

Time's probably expiring
but Newegg has a deal on a Western Digital 2TB hard disk and a Rosewill external USB SATA dock for $149.99
Now I find this out?
I just put two 1TB internals and 4GB RAM in this PowerPC G5. Coming from 512K/80GB this is pretty nice, one 2TB with a partition would have been nifty though.
I ran into this deal about an hour ago.
Still having two physical 1TB drives is nice, especially if you get them mirrored. Hard drives aren’t the most durable electronic devices out there.
Crazy to think that we’re paying a little less than ten cents per GB of storage now.
Two is great, I split one just for backing up music and photos.
That 2TB is about $50 more than what I paid for one of these, I didn’t see that sale on while I was there this morning. Oh well.
Those Seagate Barracudas are priced to move, but holy moly they have a horrible reputation. From what I read Seagate admits they have a problem.
The problem with those Barracudas is strictly firmware.
Update to the latest release and you won’t have any issues with those drives. Truthfully Seagate is the brand I trust the most because they back their drives up with a five year warranty, which is unheard of.
Which is crazy to me that people in my profession are convinced taking hard drives out
And shelving them – Is good enough for backing up their tapeless footage.

You know baseball is right around the corner when you get the good ol boys
from Baseball Tonight running their 3 hour special, and Bobby Valentine delivers a gem like this:
Olney: It will be interesting to see how the Moneyball teams like Oakland, Seattle, and Boston do. OBP was the thing started by Oakland years back and everybody picked up on it. Now it seems a focus on defense is highlighting the way team’s build their rosters this offseason.
Valentine (interjecting): Well, doesn’t that just tell you that using OBP did not work!?! Teams learned that’s not what’s important. You can come to the park and just forget about that stuff. Just play baseball the way they used to (I have no idea what this means).
Olney and Kurkijan: (akward laugh and no response)
"Just play baseball the way they used to (I have no idea what this means)."
in Bobby’s case it was over-aggresive play and a series of fabulous injuries .. broken jaw, ripped-up knee, and the spectacular fence-hanging broken leg
Sounded good at the time though, didn't it?
One season of Wakamatsu and I hope he never leaves. Unless he gets ridiculous with the bullpens and matchups or something.
I believe he means you come yo the park like Ty Cobb (my favorite),

So, it is going on 10, and a holiday in the States. Wouldn't you think NBC would want to fill time with one of these?
Feb. 15, 10:00- Cross-Country Skiing – Ladies’ 10 km Free Medal Event
Feb. 15, 10:30- Alpine Skiing – Men’s Downhill
Feb. 15, 10:30- Snowboard – Men’s Snowboard Cross Qualification Medal Event
Do you people in Seattle get CTVBC? Or do I only get it because I'm so close to the border?
They’re showing those events, because they’re a lot smarter than NBC.
We only get CBC (aka CBUT) as a Comcast channel.
A friend of mine used to live in Bellingham, and got CTV as a regular channel, because she was far enough north
Apparently NBC thinks I want to watch Ellen DeGeneres and infomercials more than the Olympics.
I don’t see what’s so hard about showing as many live events as possible and tape delaying only those that overlap. And I don’t see the big deal with completely disregarding normal programming; it’s only two weeks every fourth year for pete sake.
I found that 115 "Universal sports" has a wrap-up/preview show on

Bioshock 2 turned out to be a damn good game.
The first 30 minutes or so had me deeply worried about the game, but soon it became dark, frightening, challenging, and in the end almost as good as the first game. The story was not nearly as good, but the game play and horror elements of the game were pulled off a little better I think. And the end was surprisingly touching (I had the “good” ending).
Who else has thoughts on Bioshock 2 so far?
by Phil Hatzenbuehler on Feb 15, 2010 1:16 PM PST reply actions
Loved it
Pretty much what you said, the story wasn’t as compelling but it was still good, and the gameplay was much improved. The trap elements/defense were a great addition, and not having to switch between your plasmid and your weapon made the fighting wayyyy more fluid. Overall I’d say it’s a better game than the first, especially because the multiplayer is actually pretty neat too.
At first, I felt that defending the Little Sister when she's gathering was tedious and frustrating.
But as my character became more powerful, and I started investing in the genius that is the Cyclone Trap plasmid, I started really enjoying it. Using the trap bolts and trap rivets with the deployable mini turrets was awesome. It was fun trying to predict where the splicers were going to come from, and be able to effectively defend yourself and the little one.
by Phil Hatzenbuehler on Feb 15, 2010 1:37 PM PST up reply actions
That's the one minor complaint I had with it
The beginning of the game was a little bit too difficult, I think, considering they don’t give you much to work with at that point. I usually like to go with the hardest settings on the first playthrough, but for that first fight with a Big Sister I had to turn down the difficulty because on hard it was just impossible; without the research and plasmid upgrades and better weapons you just don’t do enough damage, even using the terrain, and she does SO much to you.
I'm only a little bit into it, playing on hard
Your point about the first 30 minutes having you worried has made me feel a bit better, because I’m still at that point I believe. Good to know that it picks up

I didn't appreciate that the game forces you to go in certain directions at points.
When the window cracks, and you’re forced to go out into the open ocean, and again when the splicers start chucking molotovs into the room you’re in, and you fall through the collapsing floor. I hadn’t fully explored those areas yet, and now I can’t go back and find what I missed.
One thing that detracts from the game is the inability to go back to previous levels. I liked being able to go back and find weapon upgrade stations that I had missed in the first game.
One thing that helps in the new game: REMEMBER WHERE YOU LEAVE EVE HYPOS AND HEALTH PACKS. You can only carry five of each (unless you equip some tonics that allow you to carry more) so at certain parts of the game your situation can become pretty dire. If you remember where eve hypos and health packs that you weren’t able to pick up previously are, you’ll be in a lot better shape.

Anybody hear Mike Salk's segment on Ichiro today?
In short, “I’m not saying that Ichiro should change, but here’s a list of things about Ichiro I hate and he should change.”
Sounded like he was reading waaaay too far into that article the Times ran over the weekend.
Salk took exception to Ichiro's personal 200-hit a season benchmark and the whole Willie Keeler thing.
In other words, Ichiro is selfish for making 200 hits a season a personal goal and admitting that he felt pressure to break those records.
The one year he tried to "walk" more
Was actually one of his worst seasons.

Ichiro is 36.
You’re not going to change the way he plays at this point in his career, so just sit back and enjoy watching one of the greatest hitters of our generation.
Really good things get undervalued all the time.
Lots of people thought Bath Ruth wasn’t as good as he was, same with Elvis (toward the last several years), Star Wars (some original reviews are horrible), taking baths (that went out of fashion for about a 1000 years in the West), eating vegetable (undervalued by most kids and young adults), ABBA, and lots of other things.

Spring training is coming!
Newly acquired Cliff Lee and Brandon League had moved into their lockers along pitchers row, with Lee at the first spot next to the exit that was occupied the past two years by Miguel Batista. No signs of any leftover Kenny G paraphernalia, although Lee might want to spray the area just in case.
Matt Tuiasosopo is gearing up to be perhaps the busiest Mariner at spring training this year. He said he has lost some weight in order to help his mobility as he prepares to work out at third base, second and the outfield to make himself as versatile as possible. Tui started six games late last season at second base.
“I want to do everything I can to break camp with this club,” Tuiasosopo said. “I’ve gone from having two gloves to five, and my new gloves haven’t even come in yet.”
The sweetest moment?
Nineteen-year-old catcher Steven Baron stood in front of his locker and held his cell phone high, taking photos that he planned to email to his family in Florida. Baron has taken part in the Mariners’ mini-camp for minor league prospects since Feb. 1, but moved his belongings into the major-league clubhouse today.
The Mariners drafted Baron with the 33rd overall pick in the supplemental round last June and are very high on him.
“He’s going to be a very good major league catcher,” Hansen said. “He just needs to have fun and see what the big-leagues is all about in spring training. He’ll talk to older players and see how Ken Griffey Jr. acts a certain way as a big leaguer. It’ll help him mature a little bit.”

I kind of remember Shannon Drayer commenting about 18 months ago that Tui definitely looked like a 3B.
She had a quick comment about him putting on weight in the offseason just to fit the role, and made some A-Rod comparisons. As far as player expectations playing the corner, strength, weight gain, mobility. Like that. Kind of sticks out that with a new FO there’s different emphasis, at least in the present.
Fangraphs splits are addictive as hell
Did you know that over his career, Casey Kotchman has a .174 wOBA on groundballs? That’s good for a -5 wRC+! Also, 52% of the balls he hits go for groundballs. So that’s going to be fun to watch.

Unless I misunderstood him, I swear Scott Hamilton commented yesterday that they wait for the scoring before commenting on the programs because the scoring is so weird now. They have no clue what marks are coming.
And this coming from people that have skated their whole lives. Seems it used to be much simpler.
After that, both commentators were dumbfounded, and thought they'd go to the 'master sheet' whatever that is.
Look, I understand that the judges are looking at slightly different things, but when you have a pair who fall down, basically trip over their skates several times, and end the program looking at each going, ‘what the fuck just happened?’ and they finish well ahead of others…. it just feels like business as usual in figure skating. It used to be much simpler to be corrupt, now the judges have hoops to jump through, but they still get there in the end.
A skating blog summed it up like this:
“A quick look at the scores shows that Dube and Davison scored a lot higher in program components than they have in other international events this season. It’s hard to compare different events because there are different judges, but even in this competition, I find it surprising that the judges found them only about four points behind Shen and Zhao and three points behind Savchenko and Szolkowy and Kavaguti and Smirnov as far as components. The team also received some…robust grade of execution points. At first I thought Mukhortova and Trankov were scored high, but the Dube and Davison score threw me off. I would have placed M&T ahead of Dube and Davison).”
So even the experts have no idea why that happened.
That was the worst performance I saw, and they got a decent score. I keep trying to quit you, Olympic figure skating.
Cutting the compulsories followed by that French judge mess did it for me.
They rarely showed them but when they did it was fun to watch.
While I wholeheartedly agree with this,
Let’s keep the terms “blog” and “expert” separate…!
Illegible
That's a fair point.
“People who watch this stuff a lot” I guess….
Hey, do you love mosquitos? OK, don't click these links....
Ok, everybody else? This is sort of mindblowing.
The ‘mosquito death ray’ identifies the gender of mosquitos and uses a low-power laser to, um, shoot them out of the sky.
What would be the point of this?
I assume they are not going to wipe mosquitoes off the earth. So… Is this just to be cool? Or is there some sort of reason for this technology, other than using it as a precursor/experiment for a future weapon against humans?
...and now I'm here
Does it really matter?
I mean, heck, if nothing else it’s interesting. And kills the damned things.
Illegible
No, the idea is that they could set these up in areas where Malaria is prevalent.
As you can see, these are dorks who’ve done something really clever with technology that isn’t cutting edge at all. You could do this really, really cheaply if you did it at scale. It could actually help a lot of developing countries.
But seriously, the slo-mo shots? It’s just awesome.
I meant that question seriously.
I was trying to do read about why it was created, but I couldn’t find anything that useful. It does look like Malaria is its primary use. Could affect the ecosystem though if put into affect, unless it is designed as sort of a prevention tool, by killing mosquitoes that try to get inside a house.
...and now I'm here
And it looks like that's exactly what it's for, so that's neat.
...and now I'm here
I thought the same thing, but it only targets the ones carrying malaria.
Brilliant. I’d make some comments about money, results, and other stuff but I can’t.
And I'd promptly make fun of you, but apparently I can't do that anymore.
This whole thing is awesome. I love science like this.

Major delay.
???????
It’s indoors, right? Why’d the ice melt?
The ice maitenence crew couldn't get any of their machinery operating correctly and the track was in terrible shape.
There were ripples, bumps, and holes in the ice and despite that the committee let ten heats happen before they stopped everything to actually fix the damn oval.
I am going to Spring Training the third week in March.
I am quite excited. My first time, either to non-Hoover Dam Arizona or Spring Training.
Also, I’m thinking of doing a road trip to Quebec and back this summer. Anyone done a cross-continent/country road trip before? How much would I likely be looking at cost wise approximately? Any advice?
Why is it a requisite to wear the LAMEST COSTUMES ON THE PLANET?
I mean, come on. I’d be more apt to watch if they simply wore the spandex everyone else wears. I understand the pomp. I get it. But in the traditional act of appeasing those who like beautiful, flowing ceremonious ice dance, you’re eliminating a huge portion of your viewership by dressing up like four year-old pageant girls (the men included).
Illegible
Looks like they scored pretty well
Not that I have a good grasp of what’s a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ score, but they seem happy.
Again, I notice when people fall all over the place and get a decent score. I know there’s more to it than staying upright, but seriously. Nobody has any idea how the scoring system works. It was supposed to be more technical, but it doesn’t seem to be….they get the very top pairs pretty much right, because when you’re flawless, you’re flawless. But it still seems like a wonky system right now.

It's a Kevin Smith movie so it's bound to be either awesome like Clerks 2 or cringeworthy like Dogma
Oh so strongly disagree
Clerks is one of my all-time favorite movies, and to me Clerks 2 blew it out of the water. It’s like Kevin Smith finally learned how to make a movie.
That movie was stunningly terrible.
I… pdb… please explain. Easily one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen, and I liked Clerks (it hasn’t aged particularly well, but it’s still pretty decent).
Seconded.
As a teenager I referred to Clerks, Mallrats and Chasing Amy as the holy trilogy. I liked Dogma, although I did not care for J&SBSB or Jersey Girl.
Then Clerks 2 came. I found the plot forced & predictable, the jokes juvenile (and I say that as someone who still likes Kevin Smith’s early work), and the sentiment corny. The scene with Dante driving around to the 1979 and the jail scene made me want to punch. Boo Clerks 2.
I didn't like Mallrats or Chasing Amy
I thought J&SBSB was awesome but I haven’t seen it in 7 or 8 years so who knows if I would still like it.
I don't know what it is
but it’s a whole lot better written than Clerks, it’s got a couple scenes that just make me laugh every time I see them, like the Wanda Sykes thing – and I can’t stand Wanda Sykes. I just found it to be a much better movie than Clerks, which I loved. Different strokes, I guess, but I love Clerks 2.
I may have to actually get around to watching this.

It's hard to convince people to let you eat them if you're an asshole. - Thingray
I like Clerks 2 because I identify with the characters.
I had a few close friends in high school who are all living interesting and successful lives, while I have struggled to find a place for myself. Which is basically what the movie is about. Realizing you’re an adult and you are still doing the same stupid worthless crap you did in high school/early 20’s.
For me, this is why I like Clerks 2.
Jay: You know, sometimes I wish I did a little more with my life instead of hanging out in front of places selling weed and shit. Like, maybe be an animal doctor. Why not me? I like seals and shit. Or maybe an astronaut. Yeah. Like, be the first motherfucker to see a new galaxy, or find a new alien lifeform… and fuck it. And people’d be like, “There he goes. Homeboy fucked a Martian once.”
I loved the first Clerks
Clerks 2 should never have happened.
Dogma was awesome

KM: Now, have you found a place to live out in Seattle yet?
CL: I’m actually going to rent Jamie Moyer’s house from him.
KM: I’d like to undercut Moyer. I have a rental property that might interest you more than Jamie’s. Mine’s probably smaller, but it’s on a lake. I’ll even offer two months for free.
CL: Wait, you serious?
KM: Sure am. If the Moyer deal falls through or he becomes sort of a tyrant as a landlord, get back to me. Our last renter sucked. His dogs trashed the place.
CL: Well, Jamie’s house is pretty nice. He’s got, like, 50 kids, so it has to be pretty big.

I can't imagine wanting to go to a festival any more
Maybe I’m just old and cranky but the thought of that many people milling about aimlessly really kinda defeats the purpose of going to a show for me. I like small venues.
Heeeey, that's the pdb I know and agree with.
I went to Sasquatch once, and I’m really glad I did. I just don’t want to do it again.
Agreed entirely.
A big attraction to these shows are the massive number of bands on the bill. But while I’d like to see Girls or The Tallest Man On Earth, I don’t want to see them perform at 3:00 in the afternoon with four thousand other people around me. Nor do I want to see a band like the Hold Steady or Vampire Weekend perform on the main stage – too many of the headliners are bands that, in my opinion, need to be seen in an intimate theater; not with 20K other people. Massive Attack? Probably would be pretty cool to see performing at twilight at the Gorge. She & Him? Love their music, but not so much.
Then there are bands like Pavement and Public Enemy which I’m not interested in seeing at this point. I’ve heard their music hundreds of times by now. Anyone who has ever had any desire to see Stephen Malkmus perform has by now, and while Chuck D may be sincere, Flavor Flav being on stage is going to evaporate any remaining intensity from the rest of the group.
Oh shit, Tallest Man on Earth is there too?
It might work in a larger venue. Don’t know how he is live though.

Yeah, esp. when the cost is going to be much much higher than seeing them on their own.
A part of me would love to go and see the national in THAT setting, but I don’t know that I want to pay how much it’d cost for that privilege. (Though that day, I’d see WHY? and Broken Social Scene too).
I’d see Japandroids and No Age, but those two seem the kind of bands that would be amazing in a small venue and potentially problematic there.
I wouldn't know about that.
I saw ‘em a few times at Neumo’s and then once at Showbox after they got kind of big, and there’s something about the Showbox that really made sense for their aesthetic. I don’t know if I see them in a huge outdoor setting in the same way, but this show would be after the new album comes out, so I guess if you were into that, it would be something.

2K (and way too many other sports games) seem to simply rank the teams according to the previous year's standings, with some slight adjustments based on free-agent signings that happened to get a lot of press.
I imagine I’ll have certain beefs with The Show’s rankings, but they’ll still be far better.
Speaking of The Show, I’m having a hard time getting excited about his year’s game . . . because last year’s was so goddamn good. This might be the first year in the past five that I don’t buy an MLB game the day it comes out. I know The Show 10 is going to be The Show 09 with some improvements. And that’s AWESOME. But the fact that I probably have 90% of that game sitting on my shelf already kind of kills the buzz. I’m so incredibly spoiled. Thank you, Sony.

Welcome to the club!
I’ll be seeing it for a third time next week.

I think it's a travesty if there is someone out there who doesn't see Avatar for the first time in theaters (e.g., waiting till DVD).
No matter your opinions on the story, writing, etc., it’s just so damn pretty to look at. Especially n 3D. On an Imax screen.
I was astounded by the absolute perfection of the human-based CGI.
Everything – teeth, mouth, tongue, etc. And the scenery is exquisite. My only hope is that Avatar 2 will have as strong a storyline.

You bring up something that has me really excited
I’m really hoping for a Star Wars parallel here with Avatar. The first Star Wars had groundbreaking visuals coupled with a simplistic, black-and-white storyline. The Empire Strikes Back had those same great visuals, but with a more engrossing, multi-layered storyline. It is absolutely the peak in the Star Wars mythos, and I hope to God Cameron pulls off for the sequel.
To people bitching about the lack of originality in Avatar, I say: hey, maybe Cameron saved his best stuff for Avatar 2.
Is that the light at the end of the tunnel, or the headlights of an oncoming train?
Tell me you saw it in IMAX 3D
It is so worth the extra $3.50.
2009 Safeco Field Record: 6-0 ; Overall Safeco Field Record: 10-4
Unfortunately no, but I would really like to.
This seems like the kind of film you could watch multiple times and still find surprises. Even tonight, sitting here, it struck me that right down to the breathing those CG effects were phenomenal.

It doesn't do much good to have Kirk Browning-choreographed footwork, if you don't have Kirk Browning's feet.
"He was just throwing his arms up in circles in the air all the time, there's nothing there"
Jamie Sale describing Plushenko at Europeans.
Heh.
Unlike everyone else, he didn't fall on his jumps.
But I don’t get why that Japanese kid who nailed pretty much everything got like a 79? What was up with that?
Could be the difficulty of program.
You can lose points for all kinds of things. If you can make and land complex jumps, but your choreography sucks, you won’t win. If you make everything look easy but are running a comparatively weaker program, you won’t win. If you aren’t from the country that the majority of the judges hail from, you won’t win.

I didn't watch it.
I’ll leave it to the professionals to judge, but that’s reasoning I’ve heard in the past.

It wouldn't bother me if he had even been in consideriation for a medal, it's just weird
His score was so low he had absolutely no chance, despite a pretty great performance. People who blew a jump or two got a higher score than him.
Plushy skates (if you'll excuse the pun) on his rep and his jumps.
he has no transitions, he has poor quality footwork, he does wave his arms and legs as though that is ‘choreography’ or ‘skating’
.
Terriers are my very favourite breed
They’re cute and cuddly, easy dogs to feed
They will bring you up whenever you are down
Terriers average 20 pounds.
God loves a terrier.
Yes he does, Go-o-d loves a terrier
That’s because
Brown sturdy bright and true
They give their hearts to you
God didn’t miss a stitch
Be it dog or be it bitch
When he made the Norwich merrier
With its cute little derrier
Yes, God loves a terrier!

Yes yes yes!
When I walk around this terrier town
The only thing that makes me down
Is when people put bandanas on their dog
Hilarious movie

I would recommend this for any of the mockumentaries that this group of actors have done.
This is Spinal Tap, Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, and A Mighty Wind are all great. I haven’t seen For Your Consideration yet, but I would assume that it is good also.

I've seen This is Spinal Tap
and some of A Mighty Wind. I guess I’ll try to get Best in Show, I don’t watch many movies though.
[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]
So, have they mentioned yet that Johnny's roomie in the athlete's village is ice dancer Tanith Belbin?
Well it'd be a shame if he were distracted by prurient interests.
I can’t believe the USOC allowed such temptation.

And there's the mention...
“It’s beautiful. There are aromatic candles, and he had Audrey Hepburn posters and motivational quotes on the wall. And in the bedroom, he put away all my clothes,” quoth Tanith.
“If you didn’t know, I’m a bit of a diva when it comes to my living situation. I think she’s the best roommate I could ask for. It’s going to be easy. I definitely couldn’t room with one of the boys.” sayeth Johnny.
He rocked the tassle.

I liked the logic. He, Belbin & Evan Lysacek all put in for singles, and there was a single and a 2-bedroom left.
Tanith & Evan used to date, but have been broken up for a while.
Evan & Johnny don’t really much care for each other or the others skating.
So, logically….
Totally, this kid looks like he's having a ball and the back stories are perfect.
Finally something to root for
So that French guy really fucked up...So sad that they work their heart out and they have 3 bad minutes and it's over.
