OT -- Countdown to Spring Training edition, Feb.13

Organization           Pitchers & catchers    First workout

Seattle Mariners     Feb. 17                        Feb. 18

So, ready?

Who all (besides Mark Sobba) is going this year?

Anyone have spring training stories? I watched Chris Snelling eat dinner one-handed because (big surprise) the other was in a cast ... I saw Arthur Rhodes be a big old mushball around his toddler daughter ... in 2000, when wandering around the complex one late afternoon, I snagged a beaten-up old baseball from under the picnic tables outside the weight room -- the baseball I then took to Fan Fest the following spring to have signed by that new right fielder ...

I might be going but it depends on if I can find a job first

My favorite spring training story was from about four years ago, maybe five. I was with a friend who had never been before, and in the first inning I was telling him how it worked – starters only play a few innings, then they leave and it’s a rotating cast of kids from there on out. This particular game was pretty brutal, if I recall, the M’s gave up something like 10 runs in the first inning, so by the fifth after everyone left, my friend was ready to bail. We go over to McDuffy’s, and there at a table next to us are Bret Boone and Richie Sexson, showered, changed and already drinking – and Boone was making Sexson fetch everything. Drinks, food, bets at the OTB, you name it, Boone was making Sexson go get it.

I kept overhearing Boone tell people who came up for autographs (I’m not an autograph person so I didn’t really even bother) that he was having a “brutal” day at the track, too – at one point I think he was down about $3K.

NPR piece on men's shopping habits.

big surprise, they like to “go in, kill the first thing they see, and drag it out of the store”, unlike [most] women, who will browse and ask questions.

A college professor who studies buying habits opined that stores need to do more to get men to actually stay in the store awhile …. “Men tend to go grocery shopping at night when it is not crowded … that’s when you should have a beer tasting”

Apparently some men’s clothing stores have started having pizza and beer nights …

I did a study for my thesis on Wal-Mart.

Wally’s has TVs all over the store that basically advertise in really short snippets (like 20-second spots) all day long. The ads were focused pretty directly on women. My bet is that women are specifically targeted because of these kinds of habits.

That's definitely how I shop.

But if I’m in one of those situations where I’m trying to decide between a few different things, I usually arrive at the store having already done the research online or whatever. I don’t exactly trust a salesperson to give me unbiased answers, I guess.

Just what the prof said :)

he thought putting in terminals in stores so that men could research without having to ask a person for help would be good

Maybe.

But see, I wouldn’t necessarily trust the terminal either, if it was a store operated thing.

This is exactly how I shop and it obviously annoys whichever female acquaintance I happen to be shopping with

Because I’m ready to go after about 5 minutes and they want to linger around for another hour.

by OlSalty on Feb 13, 2010 11:56 AM PST up reply actions

I'm the exact opposite

I love to go grocery shopping. I’ll stop in at a grocery store almost every day. But then, I’m basically a foodie, so they’re like nirvana to me. Although I also prefer to go at night, just to avoid long lines and all those people who are so inconsiderate as to be in the store at the same time as me.

I like clothes shoping as well, but don’t tend to spend a lot on them. Only for myself, though. Shopping with a woman is excruciating.

Dating myself, but me in a record store?

I could spend hours, but yeah, with most of the rest, it’s just in and out. I love shopping online!

by hairofthedawg on Feb 13, 2010 5:47 PM PST up reply actions

That is the only kind of store that I linger in.

I suppose that might be because it’s the only store where I don’t necessarily know what I want. If I’m clothes shopping, I’ve generally identified what I need before I go, and then it’s just a matter of satisficing. Is this shirt sort of blue? Check. We’re done here.
Record shopping isn’t like that, of course, and picking through vinyl is one of life’s great pleasures (at least to me). The good thing is that it gives me something of a window into my wife’s mind, and why she gets annoyed when I want to leave whatever store we’re in after 3 minutes.

by marc w on Feb 13, 2010 7:47 PM PST up reply actions

Book stores too... I just don't go to them as often.

This is what happens when you move away from Seattle. Get way too many books via good ol’ Amazon now.

Again, this is why Portland is so great: Jackpot records and Powell’s are one block apart.

by marc w on Feb 13, 2010 7:59 PM PST up reply actions

Depends on what I'm buying.

I buy almost everything online except clothes, which I tend to spend a while checking and considering.

I'm a woman and I hate shopping

I honestly do not understand the appeal of going to a mall or store just to browse around. I can’t spend more than an hour in a store/mall without going crazy.

I definitely don't shop like a girl

I am not a fan of browsing. I do a lot of browsing online when I’m bored, but when I go somewhere, I really need to have a clear idea of what I’m there for so I can get it and get the hell out…..

Oddly, though

If I’m with someone and it’s they’re shopping trip, I don’t mind browsing – it’s like the pressure’s off or something. I have zero intent to buy, I can just look at shiny stuff without having to be bothered to spend money on it. But if it’s for me, it’s one and done.

I have recently developed quite a taste for Baltic porters.

One of my favorites I’ve had recently is Utenos Porter, but I also like the standards-Black Boss, Zywiec, Okocim. It’s quickly becoming one of my favorite styles, but the problem is the language barrier; the bottle shops I go to tend to have a ton of Eastern European beers, but they labels aren’t generally translated so I have no idea if I’m buying a dark lager (a style I don’t tend to love and certainly don’t crave when I am looking for a porter) or even a regular Czech style lager some of the time. And because Baltic porters are so-let’s go with “flavorful”-if they’re done poorly they can be pretty much undrinkable.

So, any favorites? Suggestions for good domestic micros in the style are are welcome, but I am especially interested in Czech, Polish, Ukranian, Russian and Lithuanian examples of the style Ratebeer isn’t much help because, as with most things, the top 50-100 most highly rated beers are ones I’ve had or ones that are impossible to find.

by Aaron Campeau on Feb 13, 2010 12:12 PM PST reply actions

1554 for a domestic that's fairly easy to find

Moose Drool as well is pretty good, and of course the old standby, Black Butte Porter. I’m sure you’re already familiar with all those, though, right?
The Ram in Kent has a great one, Disorder Porter that you buy in growlers, and Diamond Knot brewery down in Mukilteo has several good beers, although not great in my opinion. I’ve only tried a few of them though, and since they’ve got many to choose from, it’s worth a try if you live in that area.

by nathaniel dawson on Feb 13, 2010 2:49 PM PST up reply actions

Have you tried Baltika?

Specifcally, Baltika 6 is their porter. It’s a big Russian brewery, and they’ve got a lot of different brews that are numbered – 3, 6, 9, 10, etc. The 6 is the Baltic porter, and it’s not bad.

Thanks to a lot of Russian immigrants, this beer is everywhere down here in T-town which is why I ask. Some people really, really love this too. Ratebeer users aren’t in love with it, but it’s an above average baltic porter. It’s got distro in the northwest, so I’m sure you’ll find it without trouble, but if you want some, let me know.

Part of the fancyshmancy indoor torch didn't rise from the floor-- but it still came off ok

I thought the postponement at Whistler was too much snow. Hardly the first Olympics with weather problems. Back in ‘80(?) we got to see lots and lots of the required dances because the skiers couldn’t go, and there was nothing else to fill time. It was swell.

by msb on Feb 13, 2010 3:26 PM PST up reply actions

Given the El Nino, I'm sure it's great somewhere. Just not here.

Last El Nino was the year we booked a cabin at Whistler, had some friends come over from the UK. It was a ‘ski in/ski out’ cabin, but there was no snow anywhere close. The lower half of Whister/Blackcomb were closed, and we heard from so many Californians that they could hardly get to the mountains at Tahoe because there was so much snow. I’m guessing Squaw Valley’s doing OK right now.

Thankfully now that Bioware seems to have a game engine they like

the turnaround for ME3 should be much shorter than ME2. I think I read that we should expect it around January-March 2011.

by BrianL on Feb 13, 2010 1:53 PM PST up reply actions

How is ME2?

The repetitiveness of environments/side missions and mako bullshit on ME1 really pissed me off.

by redwolf75 on Feb 13, 2010 2:12 PM PST up reply actions

Way more streamlined.

It retains the great character work, plot, and overall writing but does a ton to clean up the game mechanics. And yes, the Mako is gone.

There’s a sort of resource mining element now that involves you visiting various worlds and scanning them for resources you can (and should) use to upgrade the Normandy. It’s much quicker and even results in sidequests popping up every now and then.

by BrianL on Feb 13, 2010 2:29 PM PST up reply actions

Planetary scanning was way better than the Mako grindfest.

The hacking was better than the QTEs from the first game.

by BrianL on Feb 15, 2010 11:30 AM PST up reply actions

Eh scanning was ever bit as tedious

I better get some kind of reward in ME3 for having 200k of everything.

[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]

by bluemax on Feb 15, 2010 11:40 AM PST up reply actions

I'm not alone in hating the scanning mini game

and considering it took me almost as long to beat ME2 as it did ME1 on the first play through, I would say that it’s just as much in the way of tedious padding as driving the Mako.

[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]

by bluemax on Feb 15, 2010 11:51 AM PST up reply actions

You're not compelled to do the scanning on every planet.

If you’re looking to upgrade, you mine resources until you hit that point, and then you stop. There’s no achievement locked up with depleting every world’s resources. Soon as you have enough resources you do a simple orbit, find out of there’s an anomaly that triggers a side quest, and move on if there’s not.

In ME1 you had to land on every planet to determine if there was a worthwhile sidequest. In ME2 that was obvious within the first two seconds of orbit.

by BrianL on Feb 15, 2010 11:54 AM PST up reply actions

Eh but I was still scanning for minerals

because I didn’t have enough of a certain type for one last upgrade. Maybe if they’d provided something that told you the composition of the planet or whatever.

Even then, if I had done it the absolute minimum it was still duller than shit. At least driving around on planets broke up the pacing.

[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]

by bluemax on Feb 15, 2010 11:57 AM PST up reply actions

I only scanned the rich planets.

And if you use the gridlines and rotate around the planet one level at a time it really becomes quick.

[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]

by bluemax on Feb 15, 2010 11:58 AM PST up reply actions

I guess the reason it wasn't tedious for me is I interspersed scanning throughout the storyline

When I started to get bored with scanning/exploring I went and did a storyline mission.

by OlSalty on Feb 15, 2010 12:00 PM PST up reply actions

But again

this is what I did, I would scan the sector I was in for the recruitment mission and only that sector, then I would do the story mission and I still found it tedious.

It’s filler content made to extend a 20 or so hour game to a 30 or so hour game. I would’ve been just as happy doing without it.

It's not nearly as short, not nearly as repetitive, and there are no vehicles

If I had one complaint, it would be that I wish they had a wider array of techs/biotics to work with instead of a couple you use on shields, a couple on armor and a couple on unarmored people, because the fighting gets a little stale after the first playthrough. I never thought this would happen but: I have just ordered an XBox 360.

ME2 just looked too good to say no to. The question is, should I bother to buy and play ME1 before ME2 or go straight in for ME2?

The bundle I got is quite good, it was £140 for an Arcade and PGR4, GOW 2, Fable 2, Halo 3, Halo Wars and Forza 2. Are any of those games worth playing? I’ve heard that Fable 2 is supposed to be very good but I literally know nothing about XBox’s as I’ve always been a Sony gamer.

Also, should I bother paying for XBL [I wont be playing games online] and should I buy a HDD?

I still plan on my PS3 being my primary console as that’s what all of my friends play.

A song that belongs to a genre that one would normally disparage and find distasteful, but despite that one finds catchy and/or entertaining. Also something one would find hard to admit liking to friends, etc.

Including stuff people might look down on me for, such as some first album Good Charlotte, early Linkin Park, a 3OH!3 song or two, and even a dash of Avril Lavigne.

I don't disagree, but I tend to classify "guilty pleasures"

as things you objectively know are bad and like anyways. Like Kenny Rogers or Next Friday, in my case; I can’t defend it, but I like it.

I understand what you are saying

More or less music you know have all the qualities of suck, like Fall Out Boy, but you find their song catchy nonetheless.

But I think a lot of people also define “guilty pleasure” as something that isn’t hip to like for whatever reason, whether it be that the band has gone mainstream, or is just very generic/corporatized from the start. I remember DMZ on USSM a couple years ago in his music post referring to Snow Patrol’s song “Chasing Cars” or their album “Eyes Open” as his guilty pleasure. I do not think there is anything objectively bad about that song, and if I heard the song and had no idea it had been played to death by both alternative and pop radio, I would enjoy it. Would that fit your definition?

This is funny.

My friends and I had this discussion Thursday night, which resulted in one of them doing a Barry Manilow impression of “Mandy” and then later about three or four of us singing “Honesty” by Billy Joel. Soon after, it was decided that we would do karaoke in the near future.

Billy Joel is probably that guilty pleasure for me, in a weird way, because I grew up listening to him because of my parents and at one point had most if not all of his albums before I seriously got into music. Although, when that song came up, it had been about ten years since I had recently listened to him.

Incidentally, I was at a bar tonight and they were playing “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant” and I swear at least 70% of the bar was singing along as loud as they could. I could understand if it had been “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me” or “Big Shot” or “Uptown Girl”, but seriously, “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant?”

Whatever the song, it's always weird when 70%+ people start singing loudly.

I will never forget being in a bar in a small town in Somerset, England when the Darkness’ ‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love’ came on the jukebox. What seemed like the entire town, who’d been bitching about each other the whole night, put down their pints and sung (screamed) the song in unison. It felt like a cult thing. I was actually a bit creeped out; if I hadn’t been, I might’ve joined in.

Still, I bet it was roughly as surreal seeing rural townsfolk in England belting out “I Believe in Thing Called Love” as it was to see a bunch of kids in their early twenties singing one of Billy Joel’s lesser known greatest hits.

I mean, I had a friend in high school who used to burst into “You May Be Right” with me whenever on or the other of us used that phrase, but it seemed somehow more age appropriate then.

Any good rides in Seattle? I prefer off road ones as opposed to urban riding because people fucking suck at driving.

by Robert on Feb 14, 2010 10:32 AM PST reply actions

Burke-Gilman is a good starting point, or just a good ride by itself. Especially if you're getting back into riding shape.

It’s fairly level. Here’s a page with a lot of links to trail maps. King County, Seattle, Snohomish, etc. Most show the sharrows/lanes/trails.

I’ve found a couple good ones off veloroutes, all I’ve done so far is search Seattle and look at peoples maps. It’s pretty cool, gives you a profile of the elevation along your route. Once you open a map, it first shows you an overview that you can’t do anything with. To zoom in, click on the title of the map at the top of the page (probably obvious but I didn’t notice this the first few times, the turn by turn stuff is pretty handy). Lots of cyclists put in maps with back streets to avoid arterials, pedestrian bridges, you name it. Some nice rides in there.

Maybe google mountain to sound? I don’t know anything about that one yet, just by reputation.

by Kermit. on Feb 14, 2010 1:01 PM PST up reply actions

Burke-Gilman can get crowded though

If you want a less stressful ride, I’d recommend the Centennial Trail from Snohomish to Marysville. It’s pretty far away from Seattle, but there’s a lot fewer people to dodge and the countryside is really nice. If you start at Snohomish it’s a level ride for the first 3/4 of the trail, then it gets a little more hilly after Lake Stevens, but overall it’s pretty easy.

by OlSalty on Feb 14, 2010 1:26 PM PST up reply actions

And I only ride on hard surface, so I'm completely unfamiliar with the mountain bike trails.

I’m not sure if you meant off road as in dirt trails, or non-motorized vehicle paths. And if you ride on the Gilman, watch your ass when you cross streets with the street on your left, cars turning right on red lights are seriously gunning for my life and limb. Especially where the Gilman crosses 25th Ave just north of University Mall, I hate that intersection.

Olney: It will be interesting to see how the Moneyball teams like Oakland, Seattle, and Boston do. OBP was the thing started by Oakland years back and everybody picked up on it. Now it seems a focus on defense is highlighting the way team’s build their rosters this offseason.

Valentine (interjecting): Well, doesn’t that just tell you that using OBP did not work!?! Teams learned that’s not what’s important. You can come to the park and just forget about that stuff. Just play baseball the way they used to (I have no idea what this means).

Olney and Kurkijan: (akward laugh and no response)

in Bobby’s case it was over-aggresive play and a series of fabulous injuries .. broken jaw, ripped-up knee, and the spectacular fence-hanging broken leg

Not that that isn't a dumb statement,

but in Valentine’s defense, he was the only guy on the show yesterday who was firmly arguing in favor of using whatever replay is required to make sure every call is correct. I was surprised, to put it lightly.

Bioshock 2 turned out to be a damn good game.

The first 30 minutes or so had me deeply worried about the game, but soon it became dark, frightening, challenging, and in the end almost as good as the first game. The story was not nearly as good, but the game play and horror elements of the game were pulled off a little better I think. And the end was surprisingly touching (I had the “good” ending).

Who else has thoughts on Bioshock 2 so far?

by Phil Hatzenbuehler on Feb 15, 2010 1:16 PM PST reply actions

Loved it

Pretty much what you said, the story wasn’t as compelling but it was still good, and the gameplay was much improved. The trap elements/defense were a great addition, and not having to switch between your plasmid and your weapon made the fighting wayyyy more fluid. Overall I’d say it’s a better game than the first, especially because the multiplayer is actually pretty neat too.

by OlSalty on Feb 15, 2010 1:33 PM PST up reply actions

At first, I felt that defending the Little Sister when she's gathering was tedious and frustrating.

But as my character became more powerful, and I started investing in the genius that is the Cyclone Trap plasmid, I started really enjoying it. Using the trap bolts and trap rivets with the deployable mini turrets was awesome. It was fun trying to predict where the splicers were going to come from, and be able to effectively defend yourself and the little one.

by Phil Hatzenbuehler on Feb 15, 2010 1:37 PM PST up reply actions

That's the one minor complaint I had with it

The beginning of the game was a little bit too difficult, I think, considering they don’t give you much to work with at that point. I usually like to go with the hardest settings on the first playthrough, but for that first fight with a Big Sister I had to turn down the difficulty because on hard it was just impossible; without the research and plasmid upgrades and better weapons you just don’t do enough damage, even using the terrain, and she does SO much to you.

by tootthekazoo on Feb 15, 2010 2:55 PM PST up reply actions

I didn't appreciate that the game forces you to go in certain directions at points.

When the window cracks, and you’re forced to go out into the open ocean, and again when the splicers start chucking molotovs into the room you’re in, and you fall through the collapsing floor. I hadn’t fully explored those areas yet, and now I can’t go back and find what I missed.

One thing that detracts from the game is the inability to go back to previous levels. I liked being able to go back and find weapon upgrade stations that I had missed in the first game.

One thing that helps in the new game: REMEMBER WHERE YOU LEAVE EVE HYPOS AND HEALTH PACKS. You can only carry five of each (unless you equip some tonics that allow you to carry more) so at certain parts of the game your situation can become pretty dire. If you remember where eve hypos and health packs that you weren’t able to pick up previously are, you’ll be in a lot better shape.

Spring training is coming!

Kirby Arnold’s blog

Newly acquired Cliff Lee and Brandon League had moved into their lockers along pitchers row, with Lee at the first spot next to the exit that was occupied the past two years by Miguel Batista. No signs of any leftover Kenny G paraphernalia, although Lee might want to spray the area just in case.
Matt Tuiasosopo is gearing up to be perhaps the busiest Mariner at spring training this year. He said he has lost some weight in order to help his mobility as he prepares to work out at third base, second and the outfield to make himself as versatile as possible. Tui started six games late last season at second base.

“I want to do everything I can to break camp with this club,” Tuiasosopo said. “I’ve gone from having two gloves to five, and my new gloves haven’t even come in yet.”
The sweetest moment?

Nineteen-year-old catcher Steven Baron stood in front of his locker and held his cell phone high, taking photos that he planned to email to his family in Florida. Baron has taken part in the Mariners’ mini-camp for minor league prospects since Feb. 1, but moved his belongings into the major-league clubhouse today.

The Mariners drafted Baron with the 33rd overall pick in the supplemental round last June and are very high on him.

“He’s going to be a very good major league catcher,” Hansen said. “He just needs to have fun and see what the big-leagues is all about in spring training. He’ll talk to older players and see how Ken Griffey Jr. acts a certain way as a big leaguer. It’ll help him mature a little bit.”

I kind of remember Shannon Drayer commenting about 18 months ago that Tui definitely looked like a 3B.

She had a quick comment about him putting on weight in the offseason just to fit the role, and made some A-Rod comparisons. As far as player expectations playing the corner, strength, weight gain, mobility. Like that. Kind of sticks out that with a new FO there’s different emphasis, at least in the present.

by OlSalty on Feb 15, 2010 9:03 PM PST up reply actions

After that, both commentators were dumbfounded, and thought they'd go to the 'master sheet' whatever that is.

Look, I understand that the judges are looking at slightly different things, but when you have a pair who fall down, basically trip over their skates several times, and end the program looking at each going, ‘what the fuck just happened?’ and they finish well ahead of others…. it just feels like business as usual in figure skating. It used to be much simpler to be corrupt, now the judges have hoops to jump through, but they still get there in the end.

by marc w on Feb 15, 2010 9:44 PM PST up reply actions

A skating blog summed it up like this:

“A quick look at the scores shows that Dube and Davison scored a lot higher in program components than they have in other international events this season. It’s hard to compare different events because there are different judges, but even in this competition, I find it surprising that the judges found them only about four points behind Shen and Zhao and three points behind Savchenko and Szolkowy and Kavaguti and Smirnov as far as components. The team also received some…robust grade of execution points. At first I thought Mukhortova and Trankov were scored high, but the Dube and Davison score threw me off. I would have placed M&T ahead of Dube and Davison).”

Oh so strongly disagree

Clerks is one of my all-time favorite movies, and to me Clerks 2 blew it out of the water. It’s like Kevin Smith finally learned how to make a movie.

by pdb on Feb 16, 2010 11:01 AM PST up reply actions

That movie was stunningly terrible.

I… pdb… please explain. Easily one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen, and I liked Clerks (it hasn’t aged particularly well, but it’s still pretty decent).

by marc w on Feb 16, 2010 1:40 PM PST up reply actions

Seconded.

As a teenager I referred to Clerks, Mallrats and Chasing Amy as the holy trilogy. I liked Dogma, although I did not care for J&SBSB or Jersey Girl.

Then Clerks 2 came. I found the plot forced & predictable, the jokes juvenile (and I say that as someone who still likes Kevin Smith’s early work), and the sentiment corny. The scene with Dante driving around to the 1979 and the jail scene made me want to punch. Boo Clerks 2.

by katal on Feb 16, 2010 1:59 PM PST up reply actions

I didn't like Mallrats or Chasing Amy

by Poochie on Feb 16, 2010 2:01 PM PST up reply actions

I don't know what it is

but it’s a whole lot better written than Clerks, it’s got a couple scenes that just make me laugh every time I see them, like the Wanda Sykes thing – and I can’t stand Wanda Sykes. I just found it to be a much better movie than Clerks, which I loved. Different strokes, I guess, but I love Clerks 2.

by pdb on Feb 16, 2010 2:12 PM PST up reply actions

I like Clerks 2 because I identify with the characters.

I had a few close friends in high school who are all living interesting and successful lives, while I have struggled to find a place for myself. Which is basically what the movie is about. Realizing you’re an adult and you are still doing the same stupid worthless crap you did in high school/early 20’s.

by mark sobba on Feb 17, 2010 12:36 AM PST up reply actions

For me, this is why I like Clerks 2.

Jay: You know, sometimes I wish I did a little more with my life instead of hanging out in front of places selling weed and shit. Like, maybe be an animal doctor. Why not me? I like seals and shit. Or maybe an astronaut. Yeah. Like, be the first motherfucker to see a new galaxy, or find a new alien lifeform… and fuck it. And people’d be like, “There he goes. Homeboy fucked a Martian once.”

Kenny Mayne chats with Cliff Lee

KM: Now, have you found a place to live out in Seattle yet?
CL: I’m actually going to rent Jamie Moyer’s house from him.
KM: I’d like to undercut Moyer. I have a rental property that might interest you more than Jamie’s. Mine’s probably smaller, but it’s on a lake. I’ll even offer two months for free.
CL: Wait, you serious?
KM: Sure am. If the Moyer deal falls through or he becomes sort of a tyrant as a landlord, get back to me. Our last renter sucked. His dogs trashed the place.
CL: Well, Jamie’s house is pretty nice. He’s got, like, 50 kids, so it has to be pretty big.

Yeah

I went to the first Endfest, and after that I saw no need to really ever go to a big show like that again.

by pdb on Feb 16, 2010 4:44 PM PST up reply actions

Agreed entirely.

A big attraction to these shows are the massive number of bands on the bill. But while I’d like to see Girls or The Tallest Man On Earth, I don’t want to see them perform at 3:00 in the afternoon with four thousand other people around me. Nor do I want to see a band like the Hold Steady or Vampire Weekend perform on the main stage – too many of the headliners are bands that, in my opinion, need to be seen in an intimate theater; not with 20K other people. Massive Attack? Probably would be pretty cool to see performing at twilight at the Gorge. She & Him? Love their music, but not so much.

Then there are bands like Pavement and Public Enemy which I’m not interested in seeing at this point. I’ve heard their music hundreds of times by now. Anyone who has ever had any desire to see Stephen Malkmus perform has by now, and while Chuck D may be sincere, Flavor Flav being on stage is going to evaporate any remaining intensity from the rest of the group.

by katal on Feb 16, 2010 6:21 PM PST up reply actions

Oh shit, Tallest Man on Earth is there too?

It might work in a larger venue. Don’t know how he is live though.

by JY on Feb 16, 2010 3:58 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, esp. when the cost is going to be much much higher than seeing them on their own.

A part of me would love to go and see the national in THAT setting, but I don’t know that I want to pay how much it’d cost for that privilege. (Though that day, I’d see WHY? and Broken Social Scene too).

I’d see Japandroids and No Age, but those two seem the kind of bands that would be amazing in a small venue and potentially problematic there.

by marc w on Feb 16, 2010 4:09 PM PST up reply actions

I wouldn't know about that.

I saw ‘em a few times at Neumo’s and then once at Showbox after they got kind of big, and there’s something about the Showbox that really made sense for their aesthetic. I don’t know if I see them in a huge outdoor setting in the same way, but this show would be after the new album comes out, so I guess if you were into that, it would be something.

2K (and way too many other sports games) seem to simply rank the teams according to the previous year's standings, with some slight adjustments based on free-agent signings that happened to get a lot of press.

I imagine I’ll have certain beefs with The Show’s rankings, but they’ll still be far better.

Speaking of The Show, I’m having a hard time getting excited about his year’s game . . . because last year’s was so goddamn good. This might be the first year in the past five that I don’t buy an MLB game the day it comes out. I know The Show 10 is going to be The Show 09 with some improvements. And that’s AWESOME. But the fact that I probably have 90% of that game sitting on my shelf already kind of kills the buzz. I’m so incredibly spoiled. Thank you, Sony.

You bring up something that has me really excited

I’m really hoping for a Star Wars parallel here with Avatar. The first Star Wars had groundbreaking visuals coupled with a simplistic, black-and-white storyline. The Empire Strikes Back had those same great visuals, but with a more engrossing, multi-layered storyline. It is absolutely the peak in the Star Wars mythos, and I hope to God Cameron pulls off for the sequel.

To people bitching about the lack of originality in Avatar, I say: hey, maybe Cameron saved his best stuff for Avatar 2.

by OlSalty on Feb 16, 2010 8:39 PM PST up reply actions

Could be the difficulty of program.

You can lose points for all kinds of things. If you can make and land complex jumps, but your choreography sucks, you won’t win. If you make everything look easy but are running a comparatively weaker program, you won’t win. If you aren’t from the country that the majority of the judges hail from, you won’t win.

“It’s beautiful. There are aromatic candles, and he had Audrey Hepburn posters and motivational quotes on the wall. And in the bedroom, he put away all my clothes,” quoth Tanith.
