The Fantasy Baseball Thread of 2010
Everyone knows one of the long standing rules here at LL, is that we don't care about your fantasy teams. But since it is that time of the year(which caught me by surprise, thanks to johnbai for reminding me), here is your one thread where we all at least pretend to care about your fantasy teams and leagues.
Go to town!
Now, as far as my league goes: I've been running one of the main LL leagues for a few years now (LL members have been participating since 2006, but it became an all LL league in 2008) and it's been a blast. We have some really good players in this league and it's pretty damn competitive. It's a 20 team H2H league. We use both leagues, with daily scoring and a live draft. My one rule is that you gotta stay active as best you can. If you don't plan on paying attention to your team, then don't apply. Being inactive gets your team locked.
14 teams, including myself, have been invited back for this year. I've sent out the reminder emails to all. So as of right now there are 6 open spots. Once everybody has checked in(or dropped out), I'll post more details about the league and open it up to the rest of LL. Once we have a full league, we can discuss settings, categories, ect. Remember that the settings that stand right now are just ones I've imported from last year.
And for those of you that don't check your email. the following have invites out:
johnbai
Edgar for Pres
Gomez
Krypto
Devin
Trev
JNR
Wadswerth
Philidopip
Scruffy Lefty
cwel87
Crystal for DH
Mr_Nate
Also, there are always a few more LL leagues that popup to handle the runoff. So if you don't get into my league, there will be plenty others to join.

I had held out hope that Yahoo! was going to add more Sabermetric stats this year, but it seems that they're sticking with the stats they have.
Oh well.
FUCK ERIC BYRNES FUCK ERIC BYRNES!
I'd be fine with wOBA but I don't really want xFIP or UZR
Because xFIP and UZR don’t really measure what happened directly and instead infer what should have happened. I don’t really know what xFIP or UZR would look like on a weekly sort of basis. There is something nice about watching a game and knowing how your player did.
ERA is a crappy stat to use to evaluate talent. I’d actually rather use RA instead. This sort of stat is a kind of fun one I think because pitcher quality does go into it but you also should factor in stuff like park effects and team defense. Its noisy which is annoying but so are all the counting stats that we use.
by Edgar for Pres on Feb 11, 2010 6:57 AM PST up reply actions
I kinda like that they don't
you use the skill stats to predict result stats. It makes it more interesting. FIP and wOBA are too predictive for fantasy leagues.

Yeah I like thinking through all the complexity
Predicting a player’s ERA is way harder than predicting a player’s FIP. Same with things like saves or RBIs.
by Edgar for Pres on Feb 11, 2010 8:49 AM PST up reply actions
wOBA isn't a more predictive measurement
It’s a more accurate measurement
by Graham MacAree on Feb 11, 2010 8:50 AM PST up reply actions
Okay, wRC is easier to predict than RBI or runs scored

I think there are two extremes that you take fantasy stats.
You either use WPA or WAR. Those are the two rational options depending on what you are trying to do by building the “best” team. The other option is the current gimmicky setup where you are hoping your SP have good ERA and your cleanup hitters knock in some RBIs.
In the end, the most important thing is which one you would enjoy most. Truthfully, I’m not really sure which I would enjoy most. Personally I think WAR would be the least fun although the most “accurate” if you want to compete to make the most talented team. A WPA league would possibly be pretty fun though I think.

Looking forward to it
This 20 team league in general has been lots of fun.
I mentioned this yesterday in the OFFTOP, I would love to join!
Let me know if / when there are openings!

I just picked the date and time at random so it would let me register the league.
The draft time is most certainly up for debate and is something we’ll discuss along with everything else.
FUCK ERIC BYRNES FUCK ERIC BYRNES!
I'd be interested in joining
I can never get enough interest from my friends to keep up a fun league, so playing with everyone from LL would be a pretty solid substitute.
I changed my team name
To FistPumpinLikeChamps. And this year, I am coming for VENGEANCE (or just not being the worst active team).
I'd love to be in if there's still a spot.

Ok, for everybody posting their emails and emailing me asking to join, here's how this is gonna work.
Once the others have checked in(and 9 out of 14 have), I’m gonna post a link to the league along with the password. It’ll be first come, first serve.

You should make them pay admission and then turn it into one big pyramid scheme somehow.
by Edgar for Pres on Feb 11, 2010 1:39 PM PST up reply actions
If I was going to go that route, I'd just turn it into a pay league and then I'd retroactively charge all of you for playing in previous years.
And of course, as the reigning champion, I would receive all of the cash given up by the teams.
FUCK ERIC BYRNES FUCK ERIC BYRNES!
This is just me but since you already have like 6 people that want in.
I would just send them a email.

Last year was my first year in the league
and I picked 18th. I was feeling pretty blue about my chances, but wound up finishing 2nd. So, the league is competitive, but not insanely so.
Yeah I agree
Plus with 20 teams, crazy stuff happens.
by Edgar for Pres on Feb 11, 2010 2:02 PM PST up reply actions
I picked last and took 8th - Just missing out on the playoffs.
by Scruffy Lefty on Feb 11, 2010 2:02 PM PST up reply actions
Picking 1st in a 20 team league isn't really that helpful
because you are ending up with #1 but then you don’t pick for about an hr.

Fields is brutally bad.

Now that I check, Cabrera actually was OK last year.
Problem was, of course it was only after I got rid of him (I distinctly remember dropping him after about 6 weeks of a .550 OPS, then him hitting two homers in the two days immediately after).

Well it's better than the stereotypical xxlilAznboixx67xx addresses that all my cousins have.
It’s pretty much my spam/fantasy email because half my emails to that address is fantasy baseball or a yahoo AdultfreakycamXXX group trying to get me to join.
You got slurved!
Last year I went from third to last and got 2nd place in the league.
Had a grand total of 24 DL trips and 7 season ending injuries throughout the year. That took too much of my life and I don’t think I can handle playing fantasy baseball ever again. I don’t even know how some of you guys can handle like 5 leagues.
...and now I'm here
Have you tried using Fleaflicker for fantasy?
I’ve used the Yahoo leagues for a few years now, but a post on Fantasy Football at KSK pointed out Fleaflicker to me. I switched my football league over to there and was absolutely blown away. These guys are really just amazing, and I’ve switched my baseball league over to there too (as well as having done a hockey league!).
First off, the bad: you can’t drag and drop lineups. And that’s it for the bad.
The good: There’s a lot of stuff here (at least in football & hockey that I assume transfers to baseball as well). First off, since you’re in Yahoo leagues, if you are a keeper league, you can transfer rosters really easily. I was worried about it, and got overactive and had my league switch in January. Turns out it took me about 10 minutes.
There’s also a ton of fantasy stat breakdown, which seems kind of silly, but I promise you is entirely fun. For instance, in football they brokedown each H2H matchup by quarters. 1st was the early games. 2nd was the late games. 3rd was Sun. night and 4th was Monday. No cooler feeling than mounting a 4th quarter “comeback.” I know that’s not how it works, but it’s fun. Additionally, they breakdown player stats amazingly well. You get nice graphs detailing the player per day and plotting them against league best and league average. Also, player ranks (in fantasy points) are by position as well as overall (For example: while searching the waiver wire for a tight end, I can just look at positional rankings as a starting point).
And trades! You can engineer multi-team trades, and you can even trade for draft picks (if you’re playing in a keeper league)! Those are just amazingly awesome to try and pull off.
FInally, the best thing they’ve got going is the best customer service I’ve ever come across. If you email, they’ll get back to you in under a day. I’ve been working with them for the transfer of my league over from Yahoo and they’re just really nice in addition to being open to suggestions and pointing out errors (for instance, since this is their first year of baseball, they didn’t have all the players loaded. They were missing some DHs and I pointed that out. Turns out they were planning on adding them the next day but they were gracious about the perceived error).
So yeah, if you’ve got a Yahoo, CBS, ESPN, or other league, go take a look. I swear by these guys now, and it really did make fantasy way more fun for me and the league.

Another interesting site is MyFantasyLeague.com.
I’m not sure on their baseball side, but the football side is pretty spectacular. We’ve got a very unique keeper league with completely unique rules and the site has allowed us to create our own.
I also played in a league at gamedayritual.com where we put in starters and backups and park effects are taken into account. each owner gets to shape their own ballpark to their liking. my co-gm and i made a short RF porch, long LF and signed a roster of LH hitters…. we did okay, considering how badly we butchered the auction…

I kinda like the challenge of making sure you have the different slots covered
but it certainly throws a wrinkle into creating draft depth charts
If yahoo was more current during the season with the players position it wouldn't bug me so much.
But to be a devils advocate to myself I do enjoy the depth chart challenge it creates.

Because I shouldn't have Adam Dunn playing Centerfield.

On top of just that
If you don’t like struggling the entire season to field the best team you can, a 20 team league isn’t a good idea. When you legitimately have Washburn in your rotation because he is a good option, you know the league is an interesting one.

Need help picking defensive stats
I’m commissioner in a 12-team auction keeper league at yahoo. I want to add stats to account for the defensive side of the game.
Unfortunately, yahoo will not track UZR for me. I know all of the following stats are flawed, but which one (or combination) would you recommend I use?
Thanks in advance for any help!
Fielding percentage
Assists
Putouts
Errors
Double Plays Turned
Outfield Assists
one more relevant fact
it is a roto league, not h2h
I'd go with outfield assists
Not sure why – just seems like the one most based on talent
My Mariners blog SodoMojo, My Twitter Feed
by Griffin Cooper on Mar 1, 2010 6:55 PM PST up reply actions
fielders who make more putouts tend to be better than others at their position.
But it’s obviously fairly flawed as a counting stat.
Anybody here interested in joining my Fantasy league?
Head to head auction. Email me if you want an invite. DanMellenLovesSlurpees@gmail.com
Thanks for joining, Will!
Okay, who else wants in? Head to head…auction…deep league…hopefully…
Anyone interested?
I’ve wanted to start a league like this for a while- a very deep AL only league with no negatively valuable categories. If I get 8 teams, I would also like to do a H2H NL only league with the same managers that would allow for trades between leagues. (For example, a manager with Pujols could trade him for Johan Santana and Kendry Morales. The Santana/Pujols part of the trade would be 1 for 1, and Morales would go to the AL team of the original owner of Pujols.) The winner would be the owner with the highest average placement in the standings of the two leagues, counting playoffs in the H2H league.

Owner(s) sought, ESPN league, weekly head-to-head
This league:
- is run on ESPN
- has a $50 buy-in
- has weekly head-to-head, points-based scoring, very like typical fantasy football
- pays out money to the playoff champion, and I think 2nd/3rd place
- pays out a weekly pot to the team who scored the most points that week (probably paid in full at the end of the season)
We lost 4 owners from a 12-team keeper league this offseason. A couple of the teams have several definite keepers, however I’m not the commissioner and I’m not sure how he will go about assigning teams to new owners; think there’s 1 new owner already signed up so there may be one open team already spoken for.
Contact me at nick at pixelnix dot com if you’re interested, and will manage your team week in and week out, I’ll e-introduce you to the person running the league.
