2/10 OFFTOP - Olympic Fever or Food Poisoning?

The Winter Olympics start on Friday.  I love the Winter Olympics, because it, even more than the summer Games, features events that I don't give a good goddamn about for 3 years and 50 weeks, and then when the Games start I'm all over them.  Events like curling, skeleton, short-track speed skating, snowboardcross - these are things I can't really even define most of the time, but when the Winter Olympics are on I am totally glued to all of them.  You can have your ice skating, your hockey, and your glamorous downhill skiing - they're all fine events, but watching curling is an awesome way to spend a couple weeks.

If only NBC were not shitty.  I find it ridiculous that in this day and age of the 24/7 media firehose that we all drink from, NBC has seen fit to show events in prime time, not when they happen, even for viewers in the same goddamn time zone as the Olympics.  If a high-profile event like the skating final is happening at 5pm, it'll be shown live on the East Coast and tape delayed TWO HOURS FROM WHERE THE THING IS TAKING PLACE.  How is this a good idea?

Anyway.  Do you care about the Winter Olympics?  What is your favorite event?

PS.  I saw Wilco last night and they were amazing.  So there's your obligatory music reference.  I like beer.

I love love love the Winter Olympics.

Louge, skeleton, bobsleigh, skiing, ski jump, curling, speed skating, snowboarding…hell, they’re pretty much all awesome.

I saw Wilco live at Bumbershoot a few years ago, and they blew away the headlining act (REM). Their live shows are pretty amazing, even if their current music is not as good as it once was.

by Phil Hatzenbuehler on Feb 10, 2010 10:19 AM PST reply actions

I've seen Wilco about four times now and this was by far the best

Because they’ve completely reined in their annoying jam-band tendencies and now focus on the folkier/slower/poppier side of their catalog in their shows. I’m not crazy about their most recent album, but the songs worked pretty well live. They’re an amazingly tight band, too, it’s the same group that’s been together for three tours now and they’re really dialed in.

And they brought out Scott McCaughey and Peter Buck, and Tweedy repeatedly name-checked the Dharma Bums, so he’s a winner in my book. Which reminds me, the Dharma Bums are playing a show next weekend! With YFF! At the Crystal! That’s gonna be a good ’un.

by pdb on Feb 10, 2010 10:21 AM PST up reply actions

I should also point out that R.E.M. was very good live.

It’s just that Wilco was so good that they made R.E.M. look sort of bad.

by Phil Hatzenbuehler on Feb 10, 2010 10:31 AM PST up reply actions

Huh, look at that.

It’s spelled “luge” not “louge”. News to me.

by Phil Hatzenbuehler on Feb 10, 2010 10:24 AM PST up reply actions

I'm still waiting for my chance to see Wilco live.

Thought about seeing them last year in Chicago, but I had already spent so much in concert tickets by then. And I figured I’d have another chance before I graduate (and presumably get the fuck out of the midwest) since it’s not like they play Chicago or Milwaukee infrequently…

Sounders fans! People who live in Seattle!

Grab lunch at the George and Dragon and hobnob with the Sounders new announcer, Arlo White.
Kevin Calabro’s 1-year deal wasn’t extended, and the Sounders enticed English announcer White to move here to take the job.
White will be at the G&D at 11:30 today.

I've only been really following for a year now

But it seems that SEA-VAN have a rivalry based on the success of the clubs but they respect them outside of the matches while SEA-PDX just despise each other on every possible level. How does PDX-VAN play into this then?

by Robert on Feb 10, 2010 11:17 AM PST up reply actions

PDX really only seems to have a rivalry with SEA

I don’t think Portland and Vancouver really have any sort of rivalry, that I can see – Vancouver’s further away than Seattle and they don’t really compete with Portland in anything, so maybe once 2011 rolls around that rivalry will heat up but for now it’s pretty non-existent from what I can tell.

by pdb on Feb 10, 2010 11:20 AM PST up reply actions

No, there's a bit of a rivalry there, but it's just several orders of magnitude less intense

There were some anti-Whitecaps photos and other stuff in the Bitter End when I was there, and it came up in conversation. It’s not a huge deal or anything, but the three teams are clearly all rivals.

It's too bad that the Winter Olympics aren't on CBC this year

I used to prefer the CBC’s coverage of the Games to any US coverage. As far as I can tell from NBC so far this year, the only three members of the US Olympic team are Lindsey Vonn, Apolo Ohno, and Shaun White, right? That’ll make the opening ceremony march a bit anticlimactic. Wait what? There’s 500+ US Olympians? huh.

Curling's the only winter Olympic sport I watch

I’m in the same boat as you though. I have no idea why I enjoy watching it. I think that’s the side of me that also enjoys watching Cash in the Attic.

by Phil Hatzenbuehler on Feb 10, 2010 10:47 AM PST reply actions

I wanted to rant about this on Twitter, but, you know, character limit . . .

YOU ARE A PROFESSIONAL WRITER. I don’t care if it’s Twitter. You write for a living, and you are therefore among the people on this planet at least somewhat responsible for taking care of the English language (or any language). I know kids are still reading books and I know we’re a long way from “Idiocracy” coming true, but a lot of people get their only real interaction with the written word through journalism — including sports journalism. Take some pride in your ability to communicate, for god’s sake. When you write like every other idiot on Twitter, guess what, you look like every other idiot on Twitter. And that makes it harder to defend the argument that professional journalism is valuable.

I’m just baffled. Does he turn in stories to his editors without a single word capitalized? Does he actually write like that? That would be horrible, but at least it would make his Twitter feed seem less ridiculous. Judging by his career as a freaking baseball writer, I’m going to assume the guy knows how to use a keyboard, so I can only chalk this up to incredible laziness or some weird attempt to “fit in” with a new medium. And the “oh it’s just Twitter” mentality doesn’t hold an ounce of water. Twitter is now a medium for news reporting, and last I checked capital letters don’t count as two characters like they did back when we used to count out headline specs for the typesetter. Shortening up sentences into headline form, etc., that all makes sense. It’s Twitter. You have to fit the message into the medium. But oh god please capitalize proper nouns, Jon. There’s nothing to lose and so much to gain. Show your readers some respect, and you might just get some back.

[exhale!]

But at least “wang derby” made me laugh.

My favorite event is the ski jump where they do the flips and twists.

The people who do that are fucking crazy. I’ll watch some of the various “going down the mountain as fast as possible on small metal/plastic things” events too.

by Jed MC on Feb 10, 2010 10:58 AM PST reply actions

This is why I love the Winter Olympics so much

So much of it seems to be “here, attach this to your body. Start here, go there. Fast”. I love that stuff.

Also, pretty much all these events feature fantastic body suits

speed skating, luge, skiing, figure skating you name it. The spandex is hot.

From the Guardian’s minute-by-minute commenter, talking about today’s team selection:

Alberto Aquilani misses the game because he’s so pale and sickly he has actually turned transparent and Rafa Benítez isn’t sure where he left him.

by pdb on Feb 10, 2010 11:01 AM PST reply actions

Kuyt and N'gog on the field at the same time?

It appears that Rafa wasn’t bullshitting when he said he wanted to try scoring some goals for a change.

by Teej on Feb 10, 2010 11:08 AM PST up reply actions

And I love that they called out bullshit like this:
Liverpool haven’t won a league game at Arsenal since February 2000 but seeing as that match was played with a different set of players in different circumstances it has no effect on tonight’s game. Like when FA Cup commentators say “Aston Villa haven’t beaten Bury for 39 years” which sounds impressive until you realise they haven’t played each other for 39 years.

by Teej on Feb 10, 2010 11:11 AM PST up reply actions

The Guardian writers are all really good at calling that out every time it happens.

They’re good at words, and funny, which is why I follow them for MBM stuff rather than the BBC, which is quicker but mostly just bullet points.

NBC will have live feeds of non-televised events on the net

is what I hear. and you could probably find some way to watch every event live on line.

De Gutibus non disputandum est

by Bearskin Rugburn on Feb 10, 2010 11:05 AM PST reply actions

Not really the point

it’s the principle of the thing, the fact that a city a five hour drive due south of where the venue is can’t watch it on TV when it happens. And believe it or not, not everybody has broadband – and/or the desire to watch things online.

by pdb on Feb 10, 2010 11:09 AM PST up reply actions

I totally agree with you

but, to play Devil’s Advocate, that 5pm timeslot is usually reserved for local news broadcasts. Those local news shows are crucial to the local stations budget.

News programs are crucial for local stations, which draw upon them for a third of their revenue.

That quote is from this article about the effect that the Jay Leno show was having on NBC’s affiliate channels for their late local news. I understand that the Olympics are only on for about 2 weeks, but I think that this timeslot factors into the fact that NBC tape delays it. Plus, it’s understandable that they would want to show the big drawing events on during primetime. That’s partially why they start at 5pm on the West Coast, so they are in prime time for the East Coast.

I hate having things tape delayed for the West Coast even when it is being held on the West Coast, like the Golden Globes and the Emmys. But that is something that we have to deal with, unfortunately.

by seattle_since_81 on Feb 10, 2010 11:39 AM PST up reply actions

Golden Globes were live this year!

And the Academy Awards are too. It’s a valid point about the news, but I’d think that NBC could build some sort of cushion for lost affiliate ad revenue into the eleventy-billion dollar contract they signed to get the Olympics in the first place.

by pdb on Feb 10, 2010 12:16 PM PST up reply actions

Even knowing the winner, I will watch to see the performance for some of the events but not all.

Like snowboard halfpipe, etc. It’s not quite as thrilling to watch the timed events like bobsled. There’s not quite the excitement trying to pinpoint the spot that the winning team made up the .01 seconds to claim the gold compared to seeing a snowboarder put together a run that contained a 1080 misty flip and a 1260 tail grab. I can’t believe that they are doing 1260s now. I remember when a 1080 was the holy grail of the sport.

Verts leagues always go the same way

1. Everyone talks shit about Vert at the start of the year
2. Vert claims its going to be his year this year
3. Vert has a terrible, mind boggling draft
4. Someone figures out a way to game everyone else, people get mad and the rules are amended
5. Some awful trades are made
6. Someone quits playing and his team is contracted
7. Vert feuds with everyone, still finishes at the bottom or near the bottom

Vancouver 2010 experts I need your help!

I’m going up for the final weekend of the games but and am looking for some advice

When I was in Copenhagen for the Denmark/Portugal WC qualifier, I was able to find a giant square with a big screen (that didn’t work for the majority of the second half) where a few thousand fans that were unable to find a ticket gathered and watched together. I assumed that Vancouver is planning to do the same thing especially if Canada makes it to the final weekend but I haven’t been able to find one.

Also in terms of transportation, Where’s the best place to cross the border on Friday afternoon and after the closing ceremonies? Best place to ditch a car for three days? Any chance at tickets and if so are they even mildly affordable? Other Olympic tips that I might not find online?

Thanks!

by Robert on Feb 10, 2010 11:35 AM PST reply actions

Try to avoid the main (I-5) border.

Take the truck crossing that’s at SR 543. it’s not far from the I-5 crossing, but is generally less crowded.

by Phil Hatzenbuehler on Feb 10, 2010 11:44 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah; it's either this one or Abbotsford.

The SR 543 crossing is likely to be jammed as well.

Lynden/Sumas are a ways away from Vancouver, but if you hear about 3 waits at the truck crossing (543), then it’s worth it.

Do you have a preference between fiction or fact?

Do you have pretty easy (by which I mean reasonably affordable) access to older/more obscure titles – you’re in Turkey right now, right? This isn’t exactly obscure, but I’m about half way through Ladies And Gentlemen, The Bronx Is Burning right now and it’s a pretty good history of late 70’s NYC as well as the Yankees.

by pdb on Feb 10, 2010 2:20 PM PST up reply actions

Fact or fiction are both fine.

The main thing I’m concerned with is well written books. I’d rather read something less interesting that is well written than something very interesting but poorly written. Like how that sentence is poorly written, I wouldn’t want to read that haha.

As for access, I have a Kindle so if it’s available on (at?) the Kindle store I can get it.

Yeah it's great for reading.

They try to say you can use the internet on it, but that’s a waste of time. It’s a little slow, but overall it’s great for me. For me it’s great because I travel a lot and it’s inefficient to pack books when you have two suitcases for 9 months. If I had the option I’d read real books because I like to write in the margins, but on the Kindle I can make notes so it’s alright.

Basically, if you read a lot and you move around or don’t have space for books then it is a great buy. It’s got a wide selection of books, and they’re much cheaper than real books. But if you don’t read or move around a lot and have space for real books, I don’t know if it’s the best use of money. Although I think did just drop in price.

Without these actors delivery, maybe these movies aren’t as good. I have several (nsfw), Joe Pesci in Goodfellas where he’s ordering a drink from Spider. Samuel Jackson on brain detail in Pulp Fiction, and pretty much every scene with R. Lee Ermey in Full Metal Jacket, especially the scenes on the obstacle course. He’s amazing.

I've just read through our 40 man roster and I just realised that I know nothing about five of them. :(

Edward Paredes
Ezequiel Carrera
Ricky Orta
Anthony Varvaro
Dan Cortes

Firstly, what are the reasons behind having these people on the 40 man roster? I presume it has something to do with the rule 5 draft and being claimed if they are unprotected? By why choose these instead of, say, Ackley to go on the 40 man roster?

I realise I sound like an idiot, so please humour me.

by EnglishMariner on Feb 11, 2010 7:13 AM PST reply actions

Rule 5 Draft, mainly.

Ackley is on the 40-man though, because part of his negotiations included the major league contract.

Basically, players who were signed at 18 or under and have four years of service time, or players signed at 19 or over have three years of service time, need to be added to the 40-man roster lest they be picked in the Rule 5 draft. Once placed on the 40-man roster, they have three option years, in which they can be sent down to the minor leagues as many times as necessary, and then they have to stay in the majors for good. Thus, you don’t generally want to put just anyone on the roster, like Nick Hill, before you have to because burning up an option year before it is necessary to do so would be wasteful. There are rare instances of a fourth option year, but for our purposes, just stick to what I outlined.

Most of these guys are somewhat marginal, but well liked within the organization. There was space available and so the player development department gave them a “free pass” so to speak, to give them a year to see what they were capable of and protect them from the rule 5 simultaneously. There’s a good chance that one or more will be DFA’d this coming November to make room for more legitimate prospects, of which we should have a few to add.

I could give you a bit more in-depth profiles of each a little bit later, but that’s a start as far as

Kyle Farnsworth will compete for a spot in the starting rotation, Dick Kaegel of MLB.com reports.
Seriously. “We’re going to lengthen him out and see how it goes,” said pitching coach Bob McClure. “Because what he showed me last year was the ability to back off a little bit and not pitch with his hair on fire. And, to be a starter, you have to be able to just kind of go pitch-by-pitch.” Farnsworth, who turns 34 in April, is 6-11 with a 5.81 ERA as a starting pitcher in the major leagues and hasn’t made a single start since the 2000 season with the Cubs. And with good reason, too. He made some alterations to his repertoire last season, making him a bit less predictable, but he still posted a 4.58 ERA in 41 relief appearances. It’s not the craziest thing we’ve heard, but we’re skeptical that it will result in actually winning baseball games.

They’re from the suburbs though, and I imagine, not along the coast.

Other people from Jersey are among the worst people you might ever meet.

It’s not hard to can your own. Once I get my kitchen done (hopefully this summer) I’ll be making my own jams and fruit/pepper sauces. The best part, if you don’t get the jams to set right, you have a great supply of ice cream topping. The only painful part is the initial supply buying.

by Graham MacAree on Feb 11, 2010 1:03 PM PST up reply actions

He pretty much admitted as much yesterday.

He was pretty honest about it. From The Olympian:

"I got sacked," he said. "There’s no easy other way to put it except I got sacked. It was because, a) I didn’t get it done, the product was not good; and b) I had a passion for something else and wanted to leave time open for something else."
"They needed a guy that’s hungry and driven and passionate about soccer and who is available 24/7 to do the soccer," he said. "That’s the bottom line, and I was not going to be available 24/7 to do the soccer. And while I like the sport, I certainly don’t have the same passion for that sport that I do for NBA and college basketball."

As a IT guy in a security role, I can say for certain that less password are not good.

The ideal configuration is a different password for each service you use, keyed into a secured password manager that makes you follow a good password policy.
SSO is just another term for “fucked” if someone finds out your password, as they now have access to not just one service, but all of them.

I don’t understand the need to have everything connected to everything else, but more power to you for putting that in. I’d rather have comment links to not require loading the whole page, but that might just be me.

by Faux on Feb 12, 2010 7:40 AM PST up reply actions

that is true

assuming that users choose different passwords for all those different services as you say. but with so many services, folks often use the same one in order to remember. and nothing is better than strong passwords.

totally respect your IT security perspective on this. in fact, when we rolled this out to all the SB Nation bloggers I included a big note making this exact point and a reminder to make sure all their passwords were good ones.

but, SSO is also another term for ease-of-use to end-users. when I say it’s good – I mean that from the user perspective. and the connectivity is about user empowerment – control over the portability of their identity and data.

and I hear you on the comment links not requiring a load of the whole page. I believe that’s already on our feature request list, but if it’s not I’ll make sure to add it.

as an IT guy that is the single most annoying thing about computers to me

The last project I was on we implemented handheld devices for field inspections, and occasionally they either freeze, hiccup, or stop doing something. Yoink the battery out and put it back in and everything’s golden. I would much rather be able to learn what causes the problem and solve it than restart, but there we are.

by pdb on Feb 12, 2010 8:15 AM PST up reply actions

It's usually an issue with the OS not freeing memory, so there's no real way to troubleshoot it.

The reason that it happens so often in phones is that the memory architecture isn’t as complicated as full-scale computers, and doesn’t have the checks and cleaning routines that makes normal computers more robust. Couple that with the limited protected(application) mode memory and you’ve just got to reset them every once in a while.

It’s Windows 3.11 or OS/2 PM all over again.

Especially because the not-at-all-technical user base for this product wouldn’t even dream of being able to understand what any of that paragraph actually means so I ended up having to use sentences like “well it just got stuck and turning it off and on again unstuck it”.

by pdb on Feb 12, 2010 8:24 AM PST up reply actions

I do it all the time.

1. Lay one hand perpendicular with your palm down across the top of the hand that needs to be popped. The thumb of the hand that will be doing the popping should more or less align with the wrist that is being popped.
2. Wrap your fingers around the hand that is being popped. Your index finger should be touching the bone protrusion just past the wrist joint.
3. Using the heel of the hand that is doing the popping as a fulcrum, pull with your fingers so that your hand rotates up, making sure that the wrist remains still.

Okay so is LL looking really odd for anyone else right now?

LL now takes up my whole screen, the left sidebar is gone, and the comment thread is left-justified. Mac OS X, FF 3.5.7, and this just started happening.

LL Mobile is totally fucked right now

The formatting is all weird and all nesting of comments is gone. Just one big unintelligible list.

you mean the one on the main page, right?

I closed it, too, but everything is still out of whack.

It’s effecting Field Gulls and my profile page, so it seems like something is wrong across all of SBnation.

Yeah nevermind, it only fixed half the problem for me too

Now the front page content is in the right place, but the right sidebar is still pushed way down.

by OlSalty on Feb 12, 2010 9:25 AM PST up reply actions

Yes

On the front page, all of the content is pushed down to the bottom, so there’s just white space with the left sidebar where it normally is. The right sidebar and the, you know, content are way down.

Also, the site is absolutely crawling. Can someone kill the KY ad?

My fun problem is that for the last few days, when I open a Fan Post with, say, 200 new comments or something

It either never fully loads, forcing me to refresh and lose the “newness” of the comments, or it loads and the comments are still all marked as read. Irritating. Happened again just now. Doesn’t do that for front page articles though.

I was hoping to see some fireworks tonight from my roof.

First time ever

The are putting a retractable roof on BC Place but it wont be ready for a few years.

by Robert on Feb 12, 2010 1:04 PM PST up reply actions

It was a rainy, miserable night

I was very, very glad we were indoors. Just walking the several blocks around the stadium afterwards to get to the Skytrain station (not a direct route because of the security and crowd control measures) was not much fun — i can’t imagine sitting still for hours in that.

Not to mention there’s nowhere with that many seats available outdoors anywhere in the Vancouver area (the Empire grounds where the Lions and Whitecaps will be playing while BC Place gets its new roof seats a lot less).

Thank you, Vanoc, for at least getting this part of the spectating side of the Olympics right. Too bad you couldn’t have anticipated things a little better when it comes to the spectator areas that no longer exist at Cypress…

I'm happy they brought back the skeleton

I have fuzzy memories from the ’84 Olympics (?) there were several foot bridges over the track, one of the athletes went up the wall and into it killing him on the spot. That might have been why they got rid of it for so long.

More than you could fit on that pole.

120+ pounds at 90MPH will turn your brain into mush, no matter if you wear a David Wright helmet and they pad the shit out of every object there. The main safety complaints the the people have is more with the speed and layout of the course, I’ve been reading. They realize on most tracks if you get dumped outside the course you might as well give up on life.

by Scruffy Lefty on Feb 12, 2010 1:33 PM PST up reply actions

Oh jesus that picture of him hitting the pole...

Like you said above, they need plexiglass or something along the edges of those things, to keep them on the track if they crash. Hell, even a fence of some sort would be fine

by tootthekazoo on Feb 12, 2010 2:20 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah padding probably wouldn't have saved his life, that was just too fast

But for fucks sake, why are the walls of the track so low at that point when you’ve got a bunch of big steel girders two feet away?

I don't know how it is for other Software engineering jobs

but in the games industry a large number of companies will send you programming tests. Some of them are just short answer questions, while others require you to write actual small scale applications. Given how much I hated doing HW I always have issues with them.

by bluemax on Feb 12, 2010 2:21 PM PST up reply actions

Maybe there are just different assumptions or lower volume of applicants?

[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]

by bluemax on Feb 12, 2010 2:36 PM PST up reply actions

That's what I meant by different assumptions

The applicants for those types of jobs generally probably have real degrees and internships etc. The games industry attracts people who are self taught, people with diploma mill degrees, people with actual degrees, people who might be good programmers but don’t have the relevant experience etc.

Gotta filter people some how. But I hate job tests.

If you have any experience implementing enterprise software systems I'd happily seek your input

The assignment:

“Please write a 1-2 page document that outlines your recommended approach to implementing (software) at (client’s company) – not how you’ve done it in the past, but how you would do it if you were in charge.”

I do this for a living, but I only do it from the business-process and testing side, and now I have to think about how I’d do it from an infrastructure, security, AND business-process perspective. Fortunately they don’t care about budget.

C&C 4 comes out this year, and it’s supposed to be the final chapter of the Tiberium storyline. I wonder if they’ll branch it off into something else, or if they’ll keep going with the Red Alert universe? I’m pumped for the game, but I’m sad to be potentially seeing the last of Joe Kucan.
