2/10 OFFTOP - Olympic Fever or Food Poisoning?
The Winter Olympics start on Friday. I love the Winter Olympics, because it, even more than the summer Games, features events that I don't give a good goddamn about for 3 years and 50 weeks, and then when the Games start I'm all over them. Events like curling, skeleton, short-track speed skating, snowboardcross - these are things I can't really even define most of the time, but when the Winter Olympics are on I am totally glued to all of them. You can have your ice skating, your hockey, and your glamorous downhill skiing - they're all fine events, but watching curling is an awesome way to spend a couple weeks.
If only NBC were not shitty. I find it ridiculous that in this day and age of the 24/7 media firehose that we all drink from, NBC has seen fit to show events in prime time, not when they happen, even for viewers in the same goddamn time zone as the Olympics. If a high-profile event like the skating final is happening at 5pm, it'll be shown live on the East Coast and tape delayed TWO HOURS FROM WHERE THE THING IS TAKING PLACE. How is this a good idea?
Anyway. Do you care about the Winter Olympics? What is your favorite event?
PS. I saw Wilco last night and they were amazing. So there's your obligatory music reference. I like beer.

I love love love the Winter Olympics.
Louge, skeleton, bobsleigh, skiing, ski jump, curling, speed skating, snowboarding…hell, they’re pretty much all awesome.
I saw Wilco live at Bumbershoot a few years ago, and they blew away the headlining act (REM). Their live shows are pretty amazing, even if their current music is not as good as it once was.

I've seen Wilco about four times now and this was by far the best
Because they’ve completely reined in their annoying jam-band tendencies and now focus on the folkier/slower/poppier side of their catalog in their shows. I’m not crazy about their most recent album, but the songs worked pretty well live. They’re an amazingly tight band, too, it’s the same group that’s been together for three tours now and they’re really dialed in.
And they brought out Scott McCaughey and Peter Buck, and Tweedy repeatedly name-checked the Dharma Bums, so he’s a winner in my book. Which reminds me, the Dharma Bums are playing a show next weekend! With YFF! At the Crystal! That’s gonna be a good ’un.
I should also point out that R.E.M. was very good live.
It’s just that Wilco was so good that they made R.E.M. look sort of bad.

Huh, look at that.
It’s spelled “luge” not “louge”. News to me.

I'm still waiting for my chance to see Wilco live.
Thought about seeing them last year in Chicago, but I had already spent so much in concert tickets by then. And I figured I’d have another chance before I graduate (and presumably get the fuck out of the midwest) since it’s not like they play Chicago or Milwaukee infrequently…
I like the Winter Olympics just fine.
I like hockey and glamorous downhill skiing most of all, but like you say, I’ll follow the other sports as well for 2 weeks every four years.
There's some impressive stuff that happens in couples figure skating.

I'm a sucker for that.
I pretend it’s because I used to competitively ice skate as a kid, but I think it’s the outfits.
Sounders fans! People who live in Seattle!
Grab lunch at the George and Dragon and hobnob with the Sounders new announcer, Arlo White.
Kevin Calabro’s 1-year deal wasn’t extended, and the Sounders enticed English announcer White to move here to take the job.
White will be at the G&D at 11:30 today.
I love Portland so much, but it's not difficult to forget about that for a few hours
(Honestly, the rivalry with Vancouver has a very different tone.)
I've only been really following for a year now
But it seems that SEA-VAN have a rivalry based on the success of the clubs but they respect them outside of the matches while SEA-PDX just despise each other on every possible level. How does PDX-VAN play into this then?
PDX really only seems to have a rivalry with SEA
I don’t think Portland and Vancouver really have any sort of rivalry, that I can see – Vancouver’s further away than Seattle and they don’t really compete with Portland in anything, so maybe once 2011 rolls around that rivalry will heat up but for now it’s pretty non-existent from what I can tell.
As evidenced by the fact that Portlanders almost always say Vancouver in reference to the Washington city
and Seattleites always say Vancouver in reference to the Canadian one.
So both cities are getting MLS teams for 2011?
This is for sure now?
by Mariner John on Feb 10, 2010 11:25 AM PST up reply actions
As far as I know, yeah
I’m not following the Vancouver effort particularly, but I’ve already put ticket deposits down for what I assume will be called the Timbers.
No, there's a bit of a rivalry there, but it's just several orders of magnitude less intense
There were some anti-Whitecaps photos and other stuff in the Bitter End when I was there, and it came up in conversation. It’s not a huge deal or anything, but the three teams are clearly all rivals.
I don't know why I like curling so much but I do
And the bobsled is so awesome.
I find curling to be oddly hypnotic
And in case you haven’t seen it, here’s Steven Colbert trying out for the US Curling team.
Isn't he also sponsoring the speed skating team?
Colbert is going strong after these olympics!

And across the border
you can watch Rick Mercer’s take on various Olympic-related things on the Mercer Report
It's too bad that the Winter Olympics aren't on CBC this year
I used to prefer the CBC’s coverage of the Games to any US coverage. As far as I can tell from NBC so far this year, the only three members of the US Olympic team are Lindsey Vonn, Apolo Ohno, and Shaun White, right? That’ll make the opening ceremony march a bit anticlimactic. Wait what? There’s 500+ US Olympians? huh.
Hey, NBC's site has a special article on 10 athletes from other countries you should know.
Did you know Sidney Crosby wasn’t American!?!
Curling's the only winter Olympic sport I watch
I’m in the same boat as you though. I have no idea why I enjoy watching it. I think that’s the side of me that also enjoys watching Cash in the Attic.
Dangit.
I hate it when I realize a new OT has gone up, just after I have added my 2 cents to the old one.
I don't think hockey should be an Olympic sport, really
I’ve always thought that professional team sports, in both winter and summer, should not be part of the Olympics.
See I can agree with this.
But snowboard half pipe is one of the most visual impressive things to watch in the olympics.

I wanted to rant about this on Twitter, but, you know, character limit . . .
YOU ARE A PROFESSIONAL WRITER. I don’t care if it’s Twitter. You write for a living, and you are therefore among the people on this planet at least somewhat responsible for taking care of the English language (or any language). I know kids are still reading books and I know we’re a long way from “Idiocracy” coming true, but a lot of people get their only real interaction with the written word through journalism — including sports journalism. Take some pride in your ability to communicate, for god’s sake. When you write like every other idiot on Twitter, guess what, you look like every other idiot on Twitter. And that makes it harder to defend the argument that professional journalism is valuable.
I’m just baffled. Does he turn in stories to his editors without a single word capitalized? Does he actually write like that? That would be horrible, but at least it would make his Twitter feed seem less ridiculous. Judging by his career as a freaking baseball writer, I’m going to assume the guy knows how to use a keyboard, so I can only chalk this up to incredible laziness or some weird attempt to “fit in” with a new medium. And the “oh it’s just Twitter” mentality doesn’t hold an ounce of water. Twitter is now a medium for news reporting, and last I checked capital letters don’t count as two characters like they did back when we used to count out headline specs for the typesetter. Shortening up sentences into headline form, etc., that all makes sense. It’s Twitter. You have to fit the message into the medium. But oh god please capitalize proper nouns, Jon. There’s nothing to lose and so much to gain. Show your readers some respect, and you might just get some back.
[exhale!]
But at least “wang derby” made me laugh.

My favorite event is the ski jump where they do the flips and twists.
The people who do that are fucking crazy. I’ll watch some of the various “going down the mountain as fast as possible on small metal/plastic things” events too.
This is why I love the Winter Olympics so much
So much of it seems to be “here, attach this to your body. Start here, go there. Fast”. I love that stuff.
Also, pretty much all these events feature fantastic body suits
speed skating, luge, skiing, figure skating you name it. The spandex is hot.

From the Guardian’s minute-by-minute commenter, talking about today’s team selection:
Alberto Aquilani misses the game because he’s so pale and sickly he has actually turned transparent and Rafa Benítez isn’t sure where he left him.
Kuyt and N'gog on the field at the same time?
It appears that Rafa wasn’t bullshitting when he said he wanted to try scoring some goals for a change.
Whereas my manager apparently has decided his method of goal scoring

I'd complain about the Arsenal lineup but he's playing the only options he has
One point from twelve!
Yep. Again, you could see that as a feature, and I might agree, but I do sort of understand why
they’d go with a youngster especially as Carew hasn’t played a full game in a while.
I really like that formation for Villa, actually. I don’t know anything about Delph, however.
Also as a new soccer analyst I should probably write more than "I like him"
He’s speedy, he’s aggressive, and I think he’ll be fantastic in a couple years. His youngness combined with the youngness of the others is what worries me.
by Kirsten Schlewitz on Feb 10, 2010 11:46 AM PST up reply actions
And I love that they called out bullshit like this:
Liverpool haven’t won a league game at Arsenal since February 2000 but seeing as that match was played with a different set of players in different circumstances it has no effect on tonight’s game. Like when FA Cup commentators say “Aston Villa haven’t beaten Bury for 39 years” which sounds impressive until you realise they haven’t played each other for 39 years.
The Guardian writers are all really good at calling that out every time it happens.
They’re good at words, and funny, which is why I follow them for MBM stuff rather than the BBC, which is quicker but mostly just bullet points.
Few years back at The Metro in Chicago, my ex took the opportunity during a lull between songs to yell out "Bring back Jay Bennett!"
Tweedy looked at him and replied, “That’s your shit, man.”
Wilco hasn’t been quite the same (read: good) since he left.
RIP J.B.
...and then some depressed fucked-cake eating.
NBC will have live feeds of non-televised events on the net
is what I hear. and you could probably find some way to watch every event live on line.
De Gutibus non disputandum est
by Bearskin Rugburn on Feb 10, 2010 11:05 AM PST reply actions
Not really the point
it’s the principle of the thing, the fact that a city a five hour drive due south of where the venue is can’t watch it on TV when it happens. And believe it or not, not everybody has broadband – and/or the desire to watch things online.
I totally agree with you
but, to play Devil’s Advocate, that 5pm timeslot is usually reserved for local news broadcasts. Those local news shows are crucial to the local stations budget.
News programs are crucial for local stations, which draw upon them for a third of their revenue.
That quote is from this article about the effect that the Jay Leno show was having on NBC’s affiliate channels for their late local news. I understand that the Olympics are only on for about 2 weeks, but I think that this timeslot factors into the fact that NBC tape delays it. Plus, it’s understandable that they would want to show the big drawing events on during primetime. That’s partially why they start at 5pm on the West Coast, so they are in prime time for the East Coast.
I hate having things tape delayed for the West Coast even when it is being held on the West Coast, like the Golden Globes and the Emmys. But that is something that we have to deal with, unfortunately.
by seattle_since_81 on Feb 10, 2010 11:39 AM PST up reply actions
Golden Globes were live this year!
And the Academy Awards are too. It’s a valid point about the news, but I’d think that NBC could build some sort of cushion for lost affiliate ad revenue into the eleventy-billion dollar contract they signed to get the Olympics in the first place.
I just hate the fact I hardly watch the events because I already know who is going to win.
by Scruffy Lefty on Feb 10, 2010 1:32 PM PST up reply actions
Even knowing the winner, I will watch to see the performance for some of the events but not all.
Like snowboard halfpipe, etc. It’s not quite as thrilling to watch the timed events like bobsled. There’s not quite the excitement trying to pinpoint the spot that the winning team made up the .01 seconds to claim the gold compared to seeing a snowboarder put together a run that contained a 1080 misty flip and a 1260 tail grab. I can’t believe that they are doing 1260s now. I remember when a 1080 was the holy grail of the sport.

Verts leagues always go the same way
1. Everyone talks shit about Vert at the start of the year
2. Vert claims its going to be his year this year
3. Vert has a terrible, mind boggling draft
4. Someone figures out a way to game everyone else, people get mad and the rules are amended
5. Some awful trades are made
6. Someone quits playing and his team is contracted
7. Vert feuds with everyone, still finishes at the bottom or near the bottom
[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]
Sounds about right.
Someone always complains the draft and/or rules were unfair and if that had been changed they would have won.

Vancouver 2010 experts I need your help!
I’m going up for the final weekend of the games but and am looking for some advice
When I was in Copenhagen for the Denmark/Portugal WC qualifier, I was able to find a giant square with a big screen (that didn’t work for the majority of the second half) where a few thousand fans that were unable to find a ticket gathered and watched together. I assumed that Vancouver is planning to do the same thing especially if Canada makes it to the final weekend but I haven’t been able to find one.
Also in terms of transportation, Where’s the best place to cross the border on Friday afternoon and after the closing ceremonies? Best place to ditch a car for three days? Any chance at tickets and if so are they even mildly affordable? Other Olympic tips that I might not find online?
Thanks!
Try to avoid the main (I-5) border.
Take the truck crossing that’s at SR 543. it’s not far from the I-5 crossing, but is generally less crowded.

Yeah; it's either this one or Abbotsford.
The SR 543 crossing is likely to be jammed as well.
Lynden/Sumas are a ways away from Vancouver, but if you hear about 3 waits at the truck crossing (543), then it’s worth it.
Our tentative plan is to park at the airport but I'm not sure how bad the traffic will be once you get past the border.

I was hoping that Gallas would revert to the old Arsenal way and tackle like that all day
they need some more tackles like that. Like a couple hundred.
This is not encouraging
The teams are playing just as artlessly as they were in the first-half: they’re just doing it a a more frantic pace now.

I am absolutely addicted to curling.
When the last Olympics came around, my friends and I would stay up till 4am when curling would come on live. Half the fun was the absurdity of staying up for curling, but we actually got into the sport. Pete Fenson is my hero.

IT mostly but my engineer brother-in-law does it as well
It’s not as common as the 4 10’s, but it’s a pretty good way to go – I noticed when I was working 4 10’s that all I wanted to do when I got home from work was sleep, and then most of Friday morning was taken up with sleep as well, which seemed rather subpoptimal.

Arsenal are coming off their worst three week stretch in years, and were all but written off by most everyone before yesterday. Now that United and Chelsea have dropped points when Arsenal wins, all of a sudden THE TITLE RACE IS BACK ON!!!!! when it’s really not. But still, dropped points are good things.
Whereas we come out of one of the hardest stretches in the league
and we’re still an afterthought for that fourth place slot.

I’m trying to tell myself that this was simply a going away present for Marcus Hahnemann, who probably won’t stay in England much longer. I love Hahnemann (ex Sounders woooo), but my god that was a shitty time to give a team coached by Mick fucking McCarthy a gift.
Isn't Marcus basically a coach these days?
I’d love to see him finish up in MLS, but if it is for the Timbers I will be so conflicted.
I was just e-mailing a friend about that. HE CANNOT RETIRE A TIMBER.
As a Seattle native, I hope he understands that.
Anyway, he went to Wolves to be something like a coach, but damn it if he wasn’t the best option. He’s started their last 11 games.
Good for him. I saw he hadn't been playing much but I guess that was a while ago.
I hope he does too, especially since he won a title with Seattle before. He knows that rivalry well enough.
Yeah, he's clearly the #1 there now, and it *is* good for him.
He’s now beat Tottenham twice now though, which is not acceptable.
I didn't watch either game, and don't care to
But I like him, so I’ll give him the credit.
Karmic payback from the Spurs match I attended which saw Tottenham score 6 goals against Hahnemann and Reading.
Hey so I need some book suggestions...
Since I’m really bored and have some time to read. I’ll read anything, I really like Malcolm Gladwell’s stuff, and my two favorite books are The Power of One (Bryce Courtenay) and My Losing Season (Pat Conroy).
With that info….what do ya got for me??
TouchMyIchiro
Do you have a preference between fiction or fact?
Do you have pretty easy (by which I mean reasonably affordable) access to older/more obscure titles – you’re in Turkey right now, right? This isn’t exactly obscure, but I’m about half way through Ladies And Gentlemen, The Bronx Is Burning right now and it’s a pretty good history of late 70’s NYC as well as the Yankees.
Fact or fiction are both fine.
The main thing I’m concerned with is well written books. I’d rather read something less interesting that is well written than something very interesting but poorly written. Like how that sentence is poorly written, I wouldn’t want to read that haha.
As for access, I have a Kindle so if it’s available on (at?) the Kindle store I can get it.
TouchMyIchiro
And here's my standby fiction recommendation
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. Probably my favorite fiction book of the last decade. Doesn’t appear to be on Kindle yet though.
Didn't like it nearly as much as Kavalier & Klay
I’m not really a Michael Chabon fan except for K&C, which is amazingly fantastic.
Yeah it's great for reading.
They try to say you can use the internet on it, but that’s a waste of time. It’s a little slow, but overall it’s great for me. For me it’s great because I travel a lot and it’s inefficient to pack books when you have two suitcases for 9 months. If I had the option I’d read real books because I like to write in the margins, but on the Kindle I can make notes so it’s alright.
Basically, if you read a lot and you move around or don’t have space for books then it is a great buy. It’s got a wide selection of books, and they’re much cheaper than real books. But if you don’t read or move around a lot and have space for real books, I don’t know if it’s the best use of money. Although I think did just drop in price.
TouchMyIchiro
In due time.
Usually when I want a gadget I freak out and buy it immediately, but I think I can hold off an an e-reader for a long time. They look really cool, but they’re absolutely unnecessary for me right now.

Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurty
The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts
The Plague, by Albert Camus
Mysteries?
I just finished the 2nd in the Millineum trilogy (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl who played with fire, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest ) by Stieg Larsson.

The odd one I enjoy is the biathlon. Cross country skiing combined with shooting.
Heritage thing? Kind of weird but very practical skills in a specific environment. The practical sports are fun for me, discus, javelin, hammer throw, long distance running. Biathlon.
Super G and slalom (someone already referred to super sexy ski events way up at the top).

Suzuki Swift Ice Hockey and biathlon with an sports crossover.
Practical skills aside, biatholon is amazing for the athletes skiing balls (or boobs) out then stopping cold and shooting targets.
How do you do that with your heart beating like crazy?
I also love the rest of the nordic events, curling and speed skating.

Does anybody have a favorite scene from movies you just can't forget?
Without these actors delivery, maybe these movies aren’t as good. I have several (nsfw), Joe Pesci in Goodfellas where he’s ordering a drink from Spider. Samuel Jackson on brain detail in Pulp Fiction, and pretty much every scene with R. Lee Ermey in Full Metal Jacket, especially the scenes on the obstacle course. He’s amazing.
Did you ever hear how Ermey got that role?
His audition consisted of a 20-minute litany of swears and insults. Twenty minutes. Amazing.

Hey he's pretty good too, similar presence on screen. Side by side you can definitely tell which was the officer.
The scene in Band of Brothers where they are training, and one of the guys imitates his voice to mess with David Schwimmer is pretty funny.
From Pulp Fiction as well

He gives that bible phrase 3 times in that movie (I think). How Travolta got the Oscar nomination is beyond me.
What’s odd to me is every time something happens, Travolta is in the can. When Marcellus Wallace’s wife o.d.s on the heroin, the restaurant scene, his own death. That scene he wasn’t, but the guy comes out of the bathroom with the hand cannon. I think I’m missing one.
A lot of them for me are in Pixar movies.
The scene where Wall-E escapes the escape pod and returns the plant to EVA and they fly around the ship, or the silent montage in the beginning of “Up” are a few that come to mind.
Sad Hill Cemetery from The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is great.
“You see in this world there’s two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.”
Yes! Those guys killed that scene, the person I was with at the theater was upset about the racism.

I've just read through our 40 man roster and I just realised that I know nothing about five of them. :(
Edward Paredes
Ezequiel Carrera
Ricky Orta
Anthony Varvaro
Dan Cortes
Firstly, what are the reasons behind having these people on the 40 man roster? I presume it has something to do with the rule 5 draft and being claimed if they are unprotected? By why choose these instead of, say, Ackley to go on the 40 man roster?
I realise I sound like an idiot, so please humour me.
Dan Cortese used to host MTV Sports.

Rule 5 Draft, mainly.
Ackley is on the 40-man though, because part of his negotiations included the major league contract.
Basically, players who were signed at 18 or under and have four years of service time, or players signed at 19 or over have three years of service time, need to be added to the 40-man roster lest they be picked in the Rule 5 draft. Once placed on the 40-man roster, they have three option years, in which they can be sent down to the minor leagues as many times as necessary, and then they have to stay in the majors for good. Thus, you don’t generally want to put just anyone on the roster, like Nick Hill, before you have to because burning up an option year before it is necessary to do so would be wasteful. There are rare instances of a fourth option year, but for our purposes, just stick to what I outlined.
Most of these guys are somewhat marginal, but well liked within the organization. There was space available and so the player development department gave them a “free pass” so to speak, to give them a year to see what they were capable of and protect them from the rule 5 simultaneously. There’s a good chance that one or more will be DFA’d this coming November to make room for more legitimate prospects, of which we should have a few to add.
I could give you a bit more in-depth profiles of each a little bit later, but that’s a start as far as

Bwahahahahahahaha!
Kyle Farnsworth will compete for a spot in the starting rotation, Dick Kaegel of MLB.com reports.
Seriously. “We’re going to lengthen him out and see how it goes,” said pitching coach Bob McClure. “Because what he showed me last year was the ability to back off a little bit and not pitch with his hair on fire. And, to be a starter, you have to be able to just kind of go pitch-by-pitch.” Farnsworth, who turns 34 in April, is 6-11 with a 5.81 ERA as a starting pitcher in the major leagues and hasn’t made a single start since the 2000 season with the Cubs. And with good reason, too. He made some alterations to his repertoire last season, making him a bit less predictable, but he still posted a 4.58 ERA in 41 relief appearances. It’s not the craziest thing we’ve heard, but we’re skeptical that it will result in actually winning baseball games.

The Sounders replacing Kevin Calabro with Arlo White is a good thing, right?
As much as I loved him with the Sonics, KC seemed rather clueless at times calling play by play for the Sounders.
Yes
I got the impression that Calabro just doesn’t like soccer.
by Graham MacAree on Feb 11, 2010 1:03 PM PST up reply actions
He pretty much admitted as much yesterday.
He was pretty honest about it. From The Olympian:
"I got sacked," he said. "There’s no easy other way to put it except I got sacked. It was because, a) I didn’t get it done, the product was not good; and b) I had a passion for something else and wanted to leave time open for something else."
"They needed a guy that’s hungry and driven and passionate about soccer and who is available 24/7 to do the soccer," he said. "That’s the bottom line, and I was not going to be available 24/7 to do the soccer. And while I like the sport, I certainly don’t have the same passion for that sport that I do for NBA and college basketball."
How anyone could have a passion for the NBA is beyond me.
Perhaps the players should start being passionate. That would be a good start.
Illegible
I'll always respect him for how refused to go with the Sonics out of love of Seattle
And I’m willing to bet that him announcing got a few causal fans into the Sounders. I’m still new to the sport so I will defer to others when they said he was bad but alas I doubt I will listen to the broadcast much in the future.
I maintain that you don't actually like soccer either
You like everything around the sport rather than the sport itself

Disagree I like the sport just fine.
Prior to this year it was difficult to get into the sport when it received coverage out here only 3 weeks every 4 years. Think of how much you knew about baseball 10 months after you started paying attention to it.
As much as the announcers told me
This is why removing someone who isn’t very good and replacing him with someone competent should make you listen more, not less.

I’m going to listen less because I have season tickets and plan on going to as many away trips/viewing parties as possible.
Agreed. I heard White's broadcast of the Houston game (thanks FSN for replaying games!), and he's clearly better
But I will always respect Calabro for staying here and giving the Sounders gig his best shot.

Well, sort of above.
You can fix it column by column by setting the next column to =TRIM) and extending it down to the bottom by dragging on the lower right corner of the cell.
Then you copy>Paste Special(Values only) the whole spreadsheet, and every second column will be cleaned.

As a IT guy in a security role, I can say for certain that less password are not good.
The ideal configuration is a different password for each service you use, keyed into a secured password manager that makes you follow a good password policy.
SSO is just another term for “fucked” if someone finds out your password, as they now have access to not just one service, but all of them.
I don’t understand the need to have everything connected to everything else, but more power to you for putting that in. I’d rather have comment links to not require loading the whole page, but that might just be me.
It's hard to convince people to let you eat them if you're an asshole. - Thingray
that is true
assuming that users choose different passwords for all those different services as you say. but with so many services, folks often use the same one in order to remember. and nothing is better than strong passwords.
totally respect your IT security perspective on this. in fact, when we rolled this out to all the SB Nation bloggers I included a big note making this exact point and a reminder to make sure all their passwords were good ones.
but, SSO is also another term for ease-of-use to end-users. when I say it’s good – I mean that from the user perspective. and the connectivity is about user empowerment – control over the portability of their identity and data.
and I hear you on the comment links not requiring a load of the whole page. I believe that’s already on our feature request list, but if it’s not I’ll make sure to add it.

as an IT guy that is the single most annoying thing about computers to me
The last project I was on we implemented handheld devices for field inspections, and occasionally they either freeze, hiccup, or stop doing something. Yoink the battery out and put it back in and everything’s golden. I would much rather be able to learn what causes the problem and solve it than restart, but there we are.
It's usually an issue with the OS not freeing memory, so there's no real way to troubleshoot it.
The reason that it happens so often in phones is that the memory architecture isn’t as complicated as full-scale computers, and doesn’t have the checks and cleaning routines that makes normal computers more robust. Couple that with the limited protected(application) mode memory and you’ve just got to reset them every once in a while.
It’s Windows 3.11 or OS/2 PM all over again.
It's hard to convince people to let you eat them if you're an asshole. - Thingray
I know, it's just annoying as crap
Especially because the not-at-all-technical user base for this product wouldn’t even dream of being able to understand what any of that paragraph actually means so I ended up having to use sentences like “well it just got stuck and turning it off and on again unstuck it”.

I do it all the time.
1. Lay one hand perpendicular with your palm down across the top of the hand that needs to be popped. The thumb of the hand that will be doing the popping should more or less align with the wrist that is being popped.
2. Wrap your fingers around the hand that is being popped. Your index finger should be touching the bone protrusion just past the wrist joint.
3. Using the heel of the hand that is doing the popping as a fulcrum, pull with your fingers so that your hand rotates up, making sure that the wrist remains still.

Not to mention there’s nowhere with that many seats available outdoors anywhere in the Vancouver area (the Empire grounds where the Lions and Whitecaps will be playing while BC Place gets its new roof seats a lot less).
