Thursday deadline fast approaching
As Greg Johns reminds us, the Mariners have until Thursday to tender a contract to Jose Lopez - who, you'll recall, had his 2011 option declined, but who remains under team control for another year. What this means is that, if Lopez is getting traded, it's probably happening within the next two days. If they don't trade him and don't tender a contract, he's a free agent. If they don't trade him and do tender a contract, then that'll be a fun day to read the comments. You know how Zduriencik seems to like surprises? (note: as Dave points out in the comments, the M's can offer Lopez arbitration and then try to trade him later.)

If they offer him a contract that he would never sign, is that the same as making him a free agent?
I can’t wait for the comments if for some unworldly reason he is going to be in an M’s jersey next year.
Of course, that contradicts
what happened with RRS, who was offered a contract that he didn’t sign.
I guess I was under the impression that if an arb-eliglble player was offered(aka tendered) a contract by the deadline(12:00 midnight ET on December 2), then even if they didn’t sign said contract, the player was retained for the next season and could continue negotiating with the team. If they didn’t come to terms in the next few weeks with their team, an arbitration hearing was scheduled to determine the salary figure.
How is it that RRS was offered a contract but could refuse then? Just wondering. :)
Do we get a draft pick?
If we don’t trade, and don’t tender?
Or a Draft pick
only if we make an offer and Lopez declines?
We don't get a draft pick for Lopez no matter what happens

That seems so much like Lopez. No matter what happens, we get nothing.

It wouldn't feel right any other way.

Except for when we offer him arbitration and he hits 73 home runs next year and he becomes a type A free agent.

73 seems a little extreme....
I can’t seem him hitting more than say 60-65.

He's only going to walk 4 times too.

That and under the collective bargaining agreement
free agent compensation only applies to six-year free agents (i.e., players with the six or more years of service time necessary to qualify for free agency). Players like Lopez with less than six years of service time who become free agents by getting released or non-tendered thus do not qualify for compensation.

I kind of like the new Mariners reporter.
Significant upgrade anyway.

Given the prices we've seen this winter
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Mariners offered him arbitration even if they don’t have a deal lined up right now. Miguel Tejada just got a raise for having one of the worst seasons of his career. Geoff Blum got a two year deal. A $3 million Jose Lopez might actually look attractive to someone at the winter meetings next week. I could see Jack feeling that its worth the risk to make an arbitration offer and keep looking for deals for him rather than cutting him loose in a market where inflation appears to have set in.

Do we have any money to pay him if he gets a raise from arbitration?

Granted the plan falls through and we're stuck with him.

Pretty sure this happened to Todd Walker or Mark DeRosa a few years back. I can't remember to whom, however.

It's that damn quantitative easing
Ben Bernanke makes a few phone calls and suddenly Derek Jeter’s holding out for nine figures.
