11-29-2010 OT Post Turkey Day Edition

So the last OT seems to have died out a bit (or everyone is catching up on emails after 4 days off) thus I feel compelled to start a new one!

Star-divide

Topics up for discussion:

Black Friday, did you brave it? Did you get anything good? Personally I've found it to be pretty lackluster the last two years, but I did get some good stuff on Steam and Amazon.

Leftovers! Do you have them? What will you do with them? I have an entire pumpkin pie in my fridge that was supposed to go to my ex, not sure what I'm gonna do with it.

Holiday Music! Do you like it? Hate it? Is it still too early for it? Same thing with decorations, too soon for lights?

This weekend Charlie Weiss's offense finally bested Pete Carroll's defense. Also USC lost to Notre Dame. :(

RIP Irvin Kerschner, director of the best Star Wars :(

And of course, beer is always on topic in the off topic!

No leftovers as our Thanksgiving plans changed due to snow.

Lights went up yesterday. Hired some help to do the high parts instead of dick shimming across my roof again.

Baby, you know I love you.
I’m sorry I shat in your purse.
You just get me so worked up, I wanna sleep with your sister and your aunt Clarice that wears the cat sweaters all the time.
When we met at the swap meet last summer, you told me you wanted to be my bitch. And you are a bitch. You’re my bitch, baby. For ever and ever…

No leftovers as we went to our neighborhood bar for Thanksgiving this year because we didn't want to cook

but the dinner was great. No shopping, either, because Black Friday is dumb. Holiday music, however, is awesome – I haven’t started listening to any this year but I do love good holiday music.

How will powerhouses like UCONN and CINCINNATI feel about this?

Oh wait, you mean the Big East is clearly WORSE than what the Mountain West was?!?! SHOCKING! Maybe we shouldnt have made them a BCS conference.

by Kenneth Arthur on Nov 29, 2010 11:17 AM PST up reply actions

Who is going to be left in the Mountain West?

Mainly just the teams that are jumping from the WAC? BSU, Nevada, Fresno St, SDSU, Wyoming, New Mexico, Air Force, CSU, and UNLV, right?

by G_ on Nov 29, 2010 11:21 AM PST up reply actions

I always confused the Mountain West and the WAC and now this.

We obviously need to have a few crappy conferences. And those conferences shouldn’t be so crappy that not one team would be considered “great” but it just seems that Boise State could never catch a break. Although, this year, they shot themselves in the foot.

Still better than the WAC, but not an overly good conference.

Hawaii going Independent would make the most sense.

for football, yes

for all other sports (and Hawaii really promotes the other sports), it would be a disaster. No school is voluntarily going to pay the expense of sending its volleyball/woman’s basketball/other non-revenue sport to Hawaii.

Try to avoid Black Friday

With the limited availability of the featured items (the fine print will usually say something like the store may only have 20 of a particular heavily discounted item in stock) , the crowds, and the early times, Black Friday only seems to make sense if you want a big ticket item like the 50% off the HDTV that you have been saving for. Waiting for hours to save $5 off a $40 toy that was on sale the previous week is just not worth it. For the big presents that might run out of stock later (e.g., toys, electronics), I usually try to buy them before Thanksgiving. Stores are trying to expand the holiday shopping season earlier by offering good sales and free shipping (online) throughout November, so I try to take advantage of that.

Holiday music is great but wears out its welcome quickly, so I try to avoid it until closer to Christmas, although most of the original Very Special Christmas never gets old.

I say no because I want them to get a good draft pick. If they make the playoffs they get at best the 21st pick.

I'm not trying to be argumentative or snotty, but one more bad week and we could still be tied for first.

I’ll take what I can get.

This week we got the Panthers and the Rams are at the Cardinals.

Week 17 is looking more and more like a home playoff game.

by Kenneth Arthur on Nov 29, 2010 11:31 AM PST up reply actions

Im not saying that the Rams arent better even, but they play a similar schedule.

@ Arizona. (They JUST won their first road game of the year) @ New Orleans, Chiefs, Niners, @ Sea

They split those first four games at best, I think.

Seahawks are CAR, @SF, ATL, @TB, Stl

Its a much tougher four game split.

The odds are probably 60% Stl. But we can do just as good over the next four games if we take advantage of the Carolina game. Then its just one game for all the marbles.

by Kenneth Arthur on Nov 29, 2010 11:36 AM PST up reply actions

According to the Pro Football Reference Simple Rating System, the worst team in the NFC is the Panthers with a -13.3

The next 4 worst teams are all in the NFC West.

In the entire NFL, only the Broncos are as bad as the NFC West.

That would be
32. Carolina
31. Arizona
30. San Francisco
29. Seattle
28. Denver
27. St Louis

Yikes.

Of course, I dont know how trustworthy SRS is, but yikes. You’d think in a division so bad, at least 1 team would have a winning record by default.

by Kenneth Arthur on Nov 29, 2010 12:42 PM PST up reply actions

Week 17 should be huge and I'm excited for an important football game

You aren’t being argumentative with him, but we may not have a choice but to go to the playoffs or at least play week 17 as a win-and-in situation and at that point, WIN

by tootthekazoo on Nov 29, 2010 1:03 PM PST up reply actions

Me too, but at least we're at home for this one

As I said, though, we may not have a choice but for that game to decide if we make the playoffs or not and if we are in that position then we’d might as well win. 7-9 and losing the division would have us picking probably like 15th, so I’d much rather have the playoffs instead. Marginal difference between picks at 15th to 25th and if there’s somebody we like that’s higher than that we’ll probably try and make a trade for them anyway

by tootthekazoo on Nov 29, 2010 1:13 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, this isn't a fight for a really high and valuable pick.

by Thingray on Nov 29, 2010 1:15 PM PST up reply actions

I guess my bigger contention is that we'll almost certainly trade up to get a QB or something

Carroll and Schneider have already shown that they have no qualms about trading for value and I don’t see why they wouldn’t make an effort to trade-up if the opportunity exists

by tootthekazoo on Nov 29, 2010 1:23 PM PST up reply actions

I hate the idea of picking a QB in the middle of the first round.

Andrew Luck is great. But after that, I just don’t really know what to think. But I do know that Nick Fairley has been the best player I’ve seen play defense in the college games I’ve watched this year. And I know that LaMichael James has been the best offensive player I’ve seen. (I know he’s a sophomore right and not draft eligible, I’m just saying, those are the two best players I’ve seen this year)

I dont want a QB as much as I want players around a QB and a better defense.

by Kenneth Arthur on Nov 29, 2010 1:26 PM PST up reply actions

I don't hate the idea, but I'm not a fan

If we trade way up for a QB then I’m ok with that (assuming the trade isn’t batshit crazy). But, at face value, there is no real benefit to losing and picking at about 10th compared to making the playoffs and picking 25th or whatever. Another high draft pick will sour the fans even more, but a playoff game will bring them right back into the fold

by tootthekazoo on Nov 29, 2010 1:38 PM PST up reply actions

Looking over the standings again,

If only we had beaten STL in our first meeting earlier this year. We’d be a game over .500 and already a virtual lock to make the playoffs thanks to owning the divisional head-to-head tiebreakers and having a better record in all the other tiebreaker categories compared to our divisional rivals. Amazing how much one game can swing things in the NFL

by tootthekazoo on Nov 29, 2010 2:02 PM PST up reply actions

That's the best part

If we had beaten them we’d have a commanding hold of the division while not being the best team in said division

by tootthekazoo on Nov 29, 2010 2:22 PM PST up reply actions

LaMichael James is actually draft-eligible.

He redshirted in 2008 when the Ducks had Jeremiah Johnson and LeGarrette Blount in the backfield. I doubt he turns pro though, based on his size and his durability concerns.

I didn't say he wouldn't be good. His speed is absolutely killer.

It’s just that I don’t think his draft stock would be as high yet.

(Plus, if he stays in school even for one more year, he will likely own the record books at Oregon so thoroughly that he would surpass Joey Harrington as the program’s all-time golden boy.)

I don't see it as argumentative or snotty.

I am aware my position is an unpopular one. I just worry that making the playoffs may hurt us long term.

by Sec 108 on Nov 29, 2010 1:24 PM PST up reply actions

It sure might hurt us, but what other choice is there?

We can’t throw the games and honestly, at this point, the average fan is going to be pissed if we aren’t in a position to win against STL to make the playoffs. Sure there should have been no expectations of playoffs anyway, but as of yesterday morning we were in sole possession of first place which, to an average fan, means that we should continue to contend for the playoffs until the very end.

by tootthekazoo on Nov 29, 2010 1:35 PM PST up reply actions

The biggest hurt I would see is winning and signing Hasselbeck again.

I’m worried the fans will be pissed or the players won’t see that he’s done and the front office will be blinded by that, a la Griffey. And having Hasselbeck start another season will be really, really bad for the team long term. I just hope Schneider and Carroll are smart enough to know better.

by Mariner John on Nov 29, 2010 4:26 PM PST up reply actions

Well yeah, but I mean if we sign him for next year, I'm pretty sure he would start.

Which hurts us that much more because not only is he BAD at this point but it also doesn’t allow us to develop another quarterback who could be good. It’s already happening this year, I don’t want it to keep going on.

by Mariner John on Nov 29, 2010 4:35 PM PST up reply actions

I;m not saying a big contract.

But either drafting a quarterback or trading for a decent backup (Kolb maybe) or at least going with Whitehurst for the year. We know Hasselbeck is bad. We don’t know what unknown QB will do.

by Mariner John on Nov 29, 2010 5:02 PM PST up reply actions

There are a lot of holes.

All I’m saying is don’t waste money on Hasselbeck since, hey, he’s bad!

by Mariner John on Nov 29, 2010 5:12 PM PST up reply actions

I wish we were in a better division

so that we could just chop this season up as a loss and develop either Whitehurst, or someone else. Instead, we are an awful team, in an awful division and will probably make the playoffs.

by d0nkey on Nov 30, 2010 9:30 AM PST up reply actions

After last nights game, I put our chances of making the playoffs at 25%

We are a bad team and a worse road team. Now we have to go to San Francisco later this year with perhaps only a 1 game lead.

I just don’t like our chances nearly as much. Next week the Niners and Rams play. If the Rams win, we’re still tied for first (if we beat the Panthers) and if the Niners win, they’re still only 1 game back.

Of course, its better of the Niners win and then we beat the Niners it should still come down to week 17 against the Rams. But it seems like its a 3 horse race again and I’d put the Seahawks in 3rd because of how awfully they’ve played the last 5 weeks compared to the other 2 teams.

Frank Gore is out for the season, but running back replacements are much easier to find than us trying to replace Red Bryant and Colin Cole.

Through week 7, we gave up 77 rushing yards per game.

In our last 5, we’ve given up 177 rushing yards per game.

If you don’t count Arizona, we’ve given up 204 rushing yards per game in 4 of those 5 games.

Somebody help me out here. What changed?

I know Mebane didnt play against Oakland, but he played against Kansas City, was he not at full strength? Is it just Red Bryant since he hasn’t played since Oakland?

A combination of both?

Its pretty sad.

by Kenneth Arthur on Nov 29, 2010 12:52 PM PST up reply actions

Good question.

I don’t think Bang-Bang was at full strength yet, and losing Bryant sure hurts, but it’s been a radical change with just those two differences. Of course the Chiefs are awesome at running the ball versus anyone, so it’s hard to judge that game by itself.

Oh geez, that was a great decade.

Question: Favorite 80s movie?

This must be split up like the Golden Globes, comedy and drama (or other, anything that is not strictly comedy), because 80s is almost defined by comedies for me and was weaker in the drama category. But there were some excellent dramas and I don’t think one should be compelled to not pick a comedy because of the label “Best 80s movie” or “favorite”

Comedy: Back to the Future? Its almost perfect.
Drama: Platoon. It would be Goodfellas but that was 1990.

Princess Bride.
Neverending story, Gremlins, Ghostbusters, Goonies, Howard the Duck, Godfather, Platoon – oh my god I miss the 80s.

Because dates are based on an estimated date of Christ's birth.

And there is no year zero. There was merely Before Christ and After Christ. There might be a “day zero” (the original Christmas day), but every day thereafter would be the first year after his birth. I know it’s hip to write CE and BCE instead of AD and BC now, but they could have come up with a better date system instead of just slapping a different abbrevation on the back of the same year to cover it.

I enjoy making my 6 year old watch '80's movies with me

But mostly because when he sees the special effects he always says “Dad, that looks so fake” while he laughs at it. But then I remember that shit looking REAL when I saw the movie at his age. Technology has certainly come a long, long way

by tootthekazoo on Nov 29, 2010 2:20 PM PST up reply actions

Its hard to know if a movie is truly great or if its just something you love because of the age you watched it at.

I have a hard time believing any kid wouldn’t love Sandlot or The Goonies but maybe I’m wrong. Why would a kid want to watch The Karate Kid when they could watch The Karate Kid (2010)? Although I’ve heard that upon rewatch, the original is absolutely terrible. I haven’t seen it in years.

He discredits Alien Resurrection, Twister (per wiki, he did a re-write that wasn’t really used), discredits his work on Waterworld, and I’m not a fan of Serenity. Plus he wrote the original Buffy.

Though Toy Story…

If you only look at movies he wrote and directed, I wouldn’t say he’s the best ever. But it seems unfair to do anything Buffy without him.

Other than that, Hoyt Wilhelm, Jack Quinn, and Phil Neikro are the only pitchers to play “regularly” at an older age than Moyer.

If Moyer comes back at age 49, he’ll easily be the oldest person to ever pitch on a regular basis. Wilhelm and Niekro only pitched a handful of innings past age 48.

If Moyer could start 20+ games at age 50, that would be awesome.

Brave it? Wasn’t that hectic. My friend and I are both night owls, so we decided to go and just see if anything neat was going down. Obviously we avoided Best Buy because we weren’t there to fight for cheap deals. Everything else was not on a special sale at all in the entirety of the mall. I had been to the mall twice in the 2 weeks before Black Friday to look for a few things I needed, and I can tell you 100% that at least 95% of the Black Friday “deals” were simply normal sales with a Black Friday sign. The only interesting one was 50% off everything at the Gap. I don’t shop at the Gap, but that was clearly a Black Friday thing, and the only one that was impressive.

This has never made sense to me.

If the speed limit is 60 and you’re going 60 in the left lane, why do you need to move right if there are cars behind you that want to go faster? If they want to go faster than you, they’d be breaking the speed limit, so why can you be ticketed for driving at the speed limit and preventing others from breaking the law?

by urchman on Nov 30, 2010 8:47 AM PST up reply actions

Because you are disrupting the flow of traffic

Unless you’re going 90 or weaving like crazy, you generally won’t get busted for going 70 in a 55 as long as everyone else is going 70. if everyone else is going 70, and you’re going 60, you’re the one presenting the danger to traffic, even though you’re technically going the speed limit.

by pdb on Nov 30, 2010 8:51 AM PST up reply actions

So why even have a posted speed limit if it's just a suggestion?

If someone is considered to be the larger traffic danger if they’re going the posted speed limit when everyone else wants to exceed it, why do they even post a speed limit? If the defacto rule of highway speeds is that everyone should go the same speed regardless of what’s posted, then there shouldn’t really even be speed limits, or the posted limit should be the real limit at which exceeding it is truly dangerous, perhaps something like 90 mph.

by urchman on Nov 30, 2010 9:00 AM PST up reply actions

I need Corco support for this

the posted speed limit does indeed vary by area, which is defined by danger level – it’s 50 or 55 in city limits/urbanized areas, 65/70 or even 75 (?) in more rural areas. Regardless of the speed limit, though, it is much more important to ensure that you drive in a manner consistent with the other drivers on the road – if they’re all driving the speed limit, you should be as well. If they’re all driving 10 mph over the speed limit, then you need to either drive at that same rate, or be in the farthest right lane that you possibly can be, because it is accepted practice (if not law – I’m not sure) that passing be done on the left.

If you are in the left lane going 10 mph slower than anyone else on the road, no matter what MPH, you remove the ability of people to pass on the left in the accepted and safe manner, therefore you are a danger to other drivers.

Nobody’s saying you can’t or shouldn’t drive the speed limit. But if you do, please do it in the leftmost lane.

by pdb on Nov 30, 2010 9:06 AM PST up reply actions

I think I remember him saying something about this.

It could either work extremely well. Or if our drivers really are to stupid go horribly wrong.

by Scruffy Lefty on Nov 30, 2010 9:15 AM PST up reply actions

This

The first rule of driving is that if anybody notices you driving, you’re doing it wrong.

Nobody ever notices good drivers, we notice bad drivers, especially on divided highways. The safest way to drive is to blend in as much as possible with your surroundings. Driving in the left lane without passing is noticeable to people, ergo it is a bad behavior.

Determined, Jonesing Commentor

by Corco on Nov 30, 2010 11:46 AM PST up reply actions   4 recs

The excessive speeder is doing it wrong too

If they’re going 90 while everyone else is doing 70, they’re noticeable and therefore driving poorly. If you’re in the left lane and you’re passing somebody and 90 MPH guy comes up on you, finish passing, wait for a decent gap, and then get over. As long as you’re moving faster than the traffic to the right, you’re under no obligation to get over to allow that guy to go 90.

Driving safety is the ultimate goal.

Yes, there is a speed limit, but it is a means to the end of highway safety. Driving the speed limit in the left lane (which is supposed to be used only when passing) or disrupting the flow of traffic in an unsafe manner is contrary to the ultimate goal of a safe driving environment for everyone.

by Chris Hafner on Nov 30, 2010 9:39 AM PST up reply actions   1 recs

I don't think driving safety is the ultimate goal

People may say it is, but if that was true people would all be going at about four mph.

The goal in driving is to maximise happiness, which is a function of stress reduction (safety, lateness) and enjoyment. Those factors vary per person.

Speed doesn't kill, difference in speed kills

I suppose that to accept the “keep right accept to pass” approach, you have to inherently accept that there will be speed variation on a roadway and people will speed.

There’s a reason fatality rates are significantly lower on speed unlimited portions of the Autobahn that have more traffic than your average rural interstate- drivers look at lane discipline as the most important part of driving.

I guess that’s the fundamental difference. People like you who value speed limits above all else have trouble seeing a need for good lane discipline. People who value lane discipline above all else tend to not value speed limits as much.

Unfortunately, as long as you accept as fact that cars will speed no matter what you or the police or anybody else want, then lane discipline is more important.

And honestly, I don’t get this argument. If I’m going 90 and you’re going 60, why the hell would you WANT me to approach you in the left lane? From a safety standpoint you’re just endangering yourself- somebody is going to rear end you. If they’re speeding excessively it’ll be their fault, but why even risk it?

The error is in the assumption that “the defacto rule of highway speeds is that everyone should go the same speed regardless of what’s posted”- that’s an ideal hope, not a rule. I can’t think of a freeway in the country where all lanes travel the same speed.

There's other safety issues in play as well

Passing on the left is safer than passing on the right by no small margin- every left hand drive car in North America has better visibility on the left than the right. The other issue is that exits are generally on the right side of the road, so traffic is more likely to change lanes to the right than to the left.

It’s better to keep faster traffic on the left in all circumstances just because of that. A free form highway where all lanes are fair game would involve in lots of passing on the right and lead to more accidents because of visibility and excessive lane changes

For what it's worth,

I wasn’t arguing that I should drive at exactly the speed limit when everyone else is exceeding it by 10 mph. I agree that it’s safest to drive at the same speed as the flow of traffic. As you said, “difference in speed kills”.

My point is simply that cops regularly pull people over for exceeding the posted speed limit even if they’re going the same speed as the traffic flow and even though many modern cars are safe at higher than posted speed limits. What annoys me is the inconsistency between the posted legal speed limit and the societal norms about regularly exceeding the speed limit for reasons of safety.

Maybe I’m not explaining this very well…

by urchman on Nov 30, 2010 2:37 PM PST up reply actions

I doubt that the intention of the law was to promote speeders

In theory, everybody would go the speed limit always and we wouldn’t need multiple lane roads.

There’s basically two relevant things that are accepted as safe driving in an ideal world:
1) People shouldn’t speed
2) People should keep right except to pass

Now, if you’re going the speed limit and you need to use the left lane to pass a car (because there are cars that go under the speed limit, obviously), then the left lane is your burrito to do as you please.

The enabling of people exceeding the speed limit are just sort of a collateral consequence of the second part (just as people driving under the speed limit are a consequence of the first part), but in no way should impact your driving behavior. If you’re going the speed limit and keeping right except to pass, moving into the left lane to pass cars as needed, then you’re driving safely.

On the other point, the thing a lot of “ZOMG DON’T SPEED” people don’t realize is that a great majority of speed limits set in this country are arbitrary. One need only point to any two lane road in eastern Oregon for a good western example. It’s pretty widely accepted as fact that the “safe” speed to drive is the 85th percentile speed on any given road, which very often isn’t the case. If 85% of cars are going 70 MPH, the speed limit should be 70. If it’s posted at 55, then we’re drifting into ZOMG NO POLITICS territory.

The basic speeding law in nearly every state does not call out exceeding the posted limit

instead, it calls out driving in a manner unsafe for the current conditions or impeding the flow of traffic – the speed limit is a guideline as to what speed becomes unsafe for the current conditions, but many speed limits are designed around vehicles built in the 1960’s and 1970’s.

You would have a very hard time convincing me that my current vehicle cannot safely operate on an open highway at 85 mph

I would argue it is a guideline.

Yes, it is a legal maximum, but enforcement is dependent on officer discretion and often that decision is made based on safety. Not always, but often. Also, driving at the legal limit in an unsafe way or in unsafe conditions is still a ticketable offense – the speed limit is no defense in those cases.

Happened to me once.

Got pulled over on my Suzuki GS850 and the cop asked for proof of insurance. Well since motorcycles are not required to carry insurance in this state, and I really couldn’t afford it at the time, I didn’t have any. I asked the cop why he wanted insurance card on a motorcycle and he said “All motor vehicles in the state of Washington must have insurance”. I told him that motor cycles were the exception and he looked at me like I was crazy, so I let it drop. He wrote me the ticket, I went to court (with proof of the exemption printed off of the RCW website) and wasted half a day of work waiting for them to get to me and litterally let me leave 30 seconds later without having to pay a dime.

The Rockies just handed out a ton of money. Rotoworld:
Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that Jorge De La Rosa will receive $32-33 million over three years from the Rockies.
In other words, he’ll get virtually the same deal Ted Lilly signed with the Dodgers. We suspect he won’t be worth it in the end, but at least Rockies general manager Dan O’Dowd didn’t cave and guarantee him a fourth year.
Tracy Ringolsby reports that Troy Tulowitzki will receive $157.75 million over the next 10 seasons.
As mentioned earlier, the Rockies will pay the remaining $23.75 million left on Tulowitzki’s current contract, as well as pick up his $15 million option for 2014. The new contract will give him $119 million over six additional seasons, taking him through 2020 and his age-35 season. It’s a hefty commitment, but the Rockies obviously view Tulo as their franchise player.

Some of the apps are really, really polished and can only stand to get better as the developers learn more about what they can really do with the platform.

I’m very happy with my phone already and I can only see it getting better from here, starting next month with the first major update to the OS

I find the UI to be incredibly boring and ugly but that's just me.

And while the theming/specs of the different android devices leads to some real problems, I don’t see any better interface than what Android presents.

Android has a way of disabling the bloatware without voiding the warranty

Needs root access to do it (which can be done without voiding the warranty, look for the rage hack depending on what phone you have)

  1. pm list packages (lists the bloatware / packages installed )

then

  1. pm disable XXX (example: pm disable com.amazon.mp3)

Interesting, goooooo on

I have the Evo 4G and am looking to rid myself of every unnecessary battery draining process that I can find.

by Robert on Dec 1, 2010 3:08 PM PST up reply actions

Although to be honest, if you go about putting Cyanogenmod's rom on it

and backup the original rom, they really can’t do anything about you breaking your warranty if you flash the original rom before you turn it in.

Have you looked into how to get the CM rom on it yet?

by d0nkey on Dec 1, 2010 3:14 PM PST up reply actions

I put the CM rom on my G1 but I wasn't happy with the performance so I reverted back to stock.

The big thing is that I don’t want to lose 4G (I’m using it right now to tether in the middle of a parking lot and its amazing). Although this rom is making it mighty tempting to resist…

by Robert on Dec 1, 2010 3:19 PM PST up reply actions

The G1 was seriously lacking resources to run CM

I am seeing that the 4G isn’t working on CM yet so I would follow this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=787304 and do the rooting process but don’t install a custom rom.

When you get root, then open a terminal emulator and do the # pm disable xx commands and you should be golden.

by d0nkey on Dec 1, 2010 3:24 PM PST up reply actions

You know, when he posted that I was fully expecting you to make a comment about how you had already done this

I’m shocked that you didn’t know about this. Don’t you ever go to the xda-developers site?

by tootthekazoo on Dec 1, 2010 3:12 PM PST up reply actions

I know that when you root your phone you can install custom roms sans bloatware but I didn't know you could selectively remove it.

Also I was pretty sure that there was no temporary root for the EVO. I’m waiting for news on 2.3 before I go about permanently rooting it.

by Robert on Dec 1, 2010 3:15 PM PST up reply actions

The method I posted doesn't remove it, it just disables the software you choose and doesn't let the system restart them

But it is essentially the same thing. Except that if you had removed the software, any future updates to android would fail because of how the update process works.

This method is fine if you don’t want to go thru the rooting process, but it is not possible without root access, so unless there is a temp root method, that won’t do you any good.

Fun Jamie Moyer facts time!!!!! Yay!!

When Tommy John actually had “Tommy John Surgery” Jamie Moyer was 11 years old.

Tommy John and Jamie Moyer careers overlapped from 1986-1989.

Tommy John pitched until he was 46. He and Jamie Moyer are two of the oldest lefties to ever play in the majors.

Jamie Moyer needs 22 wins to pass Tommy John as the 7th winningest left-hander in league history.

Tommy John is a perfect example of why Jamie Moyer will not make the Hall of Fame.

So I was looking through Sean Smith's WAR database and thought I'd see what his TZ calculations

said about Derek Jeter. For his career, TZ has him at -103. For comparison, I randomly looked up a few other HOF SS who played after 1953, such as Ozzie Smith, Cal Ripken, Jr., and Luis Aparicio. None of those guys had career TZ ratings under 100. Jeter is so hilariously bad that it’s funny to see how many people think he’s good at defense.

by Coach Owens on Nov 30, 2010 11:42 AM PST reply actions

Derek Jeter is good at defense to the casual fan

the casual fan only recognizes defense in terms of how many errors/bad looking plays a player makes, and Jeter has always had good hands and scored well on the error runs calculations.

It’s simply a matter of many fans now becoming more and more educated about the game and leaving those casually following in the dust behind them.

The premise is that there’s a play where everything goes wrong, and you get to see what led up to the mistakes backstage. I still am dumbfounded that they are allowing this to happen unless I am completely off-base and Newton is an innocent guy.

Look, I know that a lot of BS gets spread around the media and you’re not guilty until proven innocent. Still, the evidence seems pretty solid and though the reports didn’t come out of the University of Auburn, it seems unlikely that a player would choose one school when another school offered him a boaload of cash (unless I’m mistaken)

The longer you let him play, the longer you risk making the championship game and the Heisman trophy an absolute mess down the line. Not that it already isn’t a mess, and the Heisman is really whatever, but there’s some really good schools out there that might not be able to play for the title because Auburn has one of the best players in the country and possibly has him “illegally”

If Auburn goes to the title game and wins, there won't be much you can do to punish them retroactively that will piss off the Auburn fans.

They wont take away the title and even if they do try to do that the fans will care but they’ll also be like “Well, we were undefeated and won the title game and we’ll always know that.”

NCAA isn’t going to act now, so they’re letting the almighty dollar win out. Maybe if TCU wasn’t third and Ohio State was, they’d do something about it?

and sniping/long range engagement is horrible.

Basically you need to excel in the mid-range game and shoot well around corners. I think a lot of it has to do with stopping power going away and stealth being so much easier this time around – stealth is really, really, reallllly good

It does play differently than past games.

Toot, just keep practicing and you’ll eventually find a style and weapon package that works. At least that’s what I keep hoping for. Adding perks can help too.

Go to guns?

I don’t think I’m at 21 yet…

That's my biggest complaint

I’ve got a whole bag of suck to deal with until I can get some good guns available, but I don’t want to put in the time to get them because I’m not enjoying it

by tootthekazoo on Dec 1, 2010 3:05 PM PST up reply actions

Just play capture the flag or something to level up.

That’s what I’ve been doing. Less frustrating that way.

FAMAS is solid this time around

but goodness, AK-47 is just the bees knees. My AK-47 K/D is 3.2. Of course, this doesn’t take into account second chance deaths, but I think my overall K/D with that loadout is like 2.7

by seattlebruin on Dec 1, 2010 3:08 PM PST up reply actions

Mine is 1.49 with the AK-47.

Much better than with any other weapon.

by Coach Owens on Dec 1, 2010 3:12 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, I haven't unlocked any of those yet (or I haven't bought them yet, I can't remember).

Sounds like I should work on that.

by Thingray on Dec 1, 2010 3:13 PM PST up reply actions

Well you've unlocked the FAMAS since it's unlocked at level 14.

The Galil is unlocked at level 20 and the AK-47 is unlocked at level 38.

by Coach Owens on Dec 1, 2010 3:24 PM PST up reply actions

Then I just need to go buy it (if I have the points).

Like I said, I'm happy to get on when we can all play together

But the game is no fun to me at all if I’m playing by myself. At least with you guys I have somebody to talk to while I’m going 5/15

by tootthekazoo on Dec 1, 2010 2:45 PM PST up reply actions

Lets play tonight!

My Macbook Pro shows up tomorrow so I’ll have even less time because I’ll be working every waking moment to February.

by Scruffy Lefty on Dec 1, 2010 2:50 PM PST up reply actions

I'd be in for some gaming tonight.

I suck, but I’ll play. What time are we thinking?

by Thingray on Dec 1, 2010 2:57 PM PST up reply actions

You guys always play so late...

Just kidding. About 8:00 works for me. Gives me time to get home and eat/practice/warm up before we start.

I think I'm gonna check Red Box and see if I can't rent this game

Then I can play with you guys tonight since my new 360 came like 20 minutes ago!

I flipped a switch on Saturday.

I hadn’t played for a week and my first match I went 27-8

by Scruffy Lefty on Dec 1, 2010 2:50 PM PST up reply actions

I play it all the time.

So I guess I’m just offline when you’re playing and you’re offline when I’m playing.

by Coach Owens on Dec 1, 2010 3:16 PM PST up reply actions

I see you guys playing individually quite a bit,

but I haven’t had the chance to join in much.

Who would have benefitted most from an expanded playoff system?

Looking back at the last 16 years, the Mariners may have made the playoffs four more times (though there would have been one game playoffs)

Still a terrible idea.

by Fuckmikereilly on Dec 1, 2010 3:50 PM PST reply actions

I definitely agree with that

I’d have to think the players would as well. In a sport where you get 3 days off per month, it seems asinine to then change that to 3 days off in a week. I’m sure that players would prefer to finish the playoffs by, say, mid-October so that they could spend time with their families

by tootthekazoo on Dec 1, 2010 4:46 PM PST up reply actions

Not that I know of

I think its just assumed its a 3 game wild card match up.

by Scruffy Lefty on Dec 1, 2010 4:29 PM PST up reply actions

I would have to assume byes would be involved, so I automatically hate it.

Byes are dumb enough in the NFL, and would work more poorly in baseball.

I also assume the season would be shortened by a few games, which I don’t have much trouble with.

by Fuckmikereilly on Dec 1, 2010 4:34 PM PST up reply actions

There won't really be "byes" just the wildcard teams will have to play each other to get in.

It gives you a reason to win your division which the yankees tanked so they could play Minnesota

by Scruffy Lefty on Dec 1, 2010 5:04 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

What about this scenario:

Six divisions, four wild card winners total, split evenly for each league. So 10 playoff teams. The wildcard winners play against four of the division winners in the first round of the playoffs. This gives the team with the best regular season record in each league a first round bye. I think it would be kinda cool to have regular season dominance mean something.

by Snowman1025 on Dec 1, 2010 8:48 PM PST up reply actions

How much of an effect would there be on hitters because of the huge layoff between the end of the regular season and the start of the second round of playoffs?

In college basketball, the Big East tried this with a double-bye for the top four regular-season teams in the 16-team conference tournament. The teams with double-byes consistently complained about the layoff, and it often showed up in the results (anecdotally, at least; I can’t seem to find brackets for the tournaments where the double-byes were awarded). I would imagine the same concerns would apply in your hypothetical scenario.

I can't see old fans leaving baseball because of this.

Sure, there are reasons to complain, but I can’t see someone abandoning MLB for it.

by Joe Metro on Dec 1, 2010 5:31 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah I guess that probably wouldn't happen

So then it would be nothing to lose and everything to gain by making a change like this then.

by d0nkey on Dec 1, 2010 5:39 PM PST up reply actions

Bullshit.

Change means, weeping and fire and catastrophic failure. Next thing you know people are gonna be asking for robots. WHEN DOES IT END.

I won't abandon the MLB.

But fuck this shit.

The Wild Card, multiple divisions, that made sense. This bullshit does not.
