WIll Carroll's Broad Brush Stroke
I, for one, think we have two of the greats when it comes to weaving stats and stories together.

Good point.
Because we’re rebels. Accurate, intelligent, introspective rebels. And damn proud of it my friend. - CapSea
I hate how dry and pedantic the Journal of Applied Physics is.
I wish, for once, they’d spruce it up with entries about magic or dragons. Those damn eggheads will never understand that physics isn’t about research; it’s about the stories.
Sabermetricians never let stories get in the way of facts
Conversely, Will Carroll has never let a simple fact get in the way of his stories.
He goes into a bit more detail in the comments section.
But he’s still way off base.

IE: sounds like he's just pissed at Baseball Prospectus.
Since I don’t know that story, or care, I’ll just let this slide as “angry”.

I hope that felt good, Will
Nothing like completely destroying your credibility in one click of the publish button.
No, no,
You’re thinking of the guy who invented batting average. The guy who invented ERA renounced his beliefs and went to work for The Weekly World News.

It's just *so lazy.*
He complains about the snarky tone of the sabremetrics crowd, then publishes a screed that paints all who are interested in learning more about the game with the same snarky brush. That post could have come from any number of ignorant mainstream sportswriters’ columns over the last five years. A sentence that includes a snide swipe at VORP – gosh, that’s original.
I’m inclined to agree with what might have been a tertiary point of his – that sabremetrics will have really hit its stride when it’s used to tell a story and impart insight to the broader populace, just as science is at its most interesting to the largest number of people when it’s framed to illustrate to the layman the breadth, majesty, and complexity of the natural world.
But he’s ignoring that this is already happening. Stat-heads do sometimes haggle about formulas, yeah, but it’s all in service of trying to explain something interesting about the game. Joe Poz and the mods at both LL and USSM use advanced metrics to reveal and explain compelling stories, not to substitute for those stories. It’s just like sportswriters decades ago who used batting average, RBI, and home runs to leaven up their stories. It’s no different. We’re just smarter now – or at least we should be.
I find it odd, but also sort of hopeful, that sabermetrics is now mocked for having too MUCH internal debate.
Seems like it was only yesterday when it was mocked for being an insular club that worships a great, inerrant prophet (Bill James, Tom Tango, BP, whoever) and ruthlessly stifles debate.
That caricature was hilariously wrong (though I must say that Voros McCracken was nearly burned at the stake for heresy, but no one wanted to light the pile of Bill James Historical Abstracts). The new one isn’t wrong, it’s just ludicrous to see it as a problem. I guess that’s…progress?
