There are a few Thermals fans on LL,

Which Thermals album and song are your favorites?

Husky hoops is depressing.

by Woodinville_12thMan on Jan 29, 2010 11:36 AM PST via mobile reply actions

I love love love love Now We Can See

but I’m starting to appreciate The Body The Blood The Machine a lot more recently, as well. Now We Can See has some absolute stunners on it, like We Were Sick and When We Were Alive, and all in all it’s a bit easier to appreciate on first listen than The Body The Blood The Machine. TBTBTM is a grower, though, and to me they’re now sort of 1 and 1A.

by pdb on Jan 29, 2010 11:45 AM PST up reply actions

"The Body, The Blood, The Machine" is the best by far.

And that’s saying something because I think More Parts Per Million and Fuckin A are both among the best 40 albums of the last decade.

As for favorite songs: “Pillar of Salt,” “Returning to the Fold,” “Here’s Your Future,” “Power Doesn’t Run On Nothing,” “Forward,” “How We Know,” “I Let It Go,” “No Culture Icons,” & “Break and Brace.”

by SethGrandpa on Jan 29, 2010 4:31 PM PST up reply actions

My favorite seems to change all the time,

Right now I love the raw intensity of Fuckin A, the don’t give a shit attitude that the whole record pulls off. Their melodicism hidden beneath the dirty distorted textures. That’s also why I love More Parts Per Million. That being said, TBTBTM is brilliant and their best in my opinion. The message and lyricism behind the album is as strong as any and the songs blow me away, the perfect balance of catchy, punked out pop music. Now We Can See is a damn fine album as well, and probably their most accessible with the most pop laden hooks.

Husky hoops is depressing.

My favorite songs are:

Born Dead
God and Country
A Stare Like Yours
Various from TBTBTM
We Were Sick

Now Playing: Roger Eno - Voices

Just the perfect album to end a miserable work week full of cold weather and inflamed sinuses.

As an alternate to the Hope For haiti Now link

you could just give $15 to the Red Cross and avoid having to own an album with Dave Matthews songs on it.

And in order to keep this music related, here’s a Redd Kross music video which is awesome.

People can like whoever they like

and even though I really don’t like DMB, it’s not my place to say that somebody should or shouldn’t like whatever bands they like.

It took me a while to come around on it

but I’ve come to enjoy The Handsome Furs’s album Face Control. Here’s a song from it that’s an excellent running/pump up song

by Dewey N on Jan 29, 2010 12:45 PM PST reply actions

Does anyone else remember the band "Lucky Me" with Jon Auer from The Posies?

I was listening to their 3 song EP or single “Unlimited Tokens” and the singer is great. The album liner says her name is Frenchie Full Moon Wilson. I can’t seem to find anything about her. Does anyone know what other groups she has been in?

by Jed MC on Jan 29, 2010 12:59 PM PST reply actions

I would just like to thank the person who posted the Mono song in the other thread, I've become somewhat obsessed.

As for a song recommendation… The Patient by Tool frequently goes through spells of being my favourite song ever.

by Eyeball Kid on Jan 29, 2010 1:23 PM PST reply actions

No problem!

I like sharing Mono with people because they’re buried pretty far down the post-rock tree.

Anybody use a song as a ringtone? If so, what do you use?

My main ringtone is the Get on my Horse song (video NSFW)

When my fiancee calls I use Beating Heart Baby by Head Automatica, off their album Decadence (which is a damn solid album)

I’m hoping to hear some good ones from everybody

Decadence is a great album

I’ve never got to see them (or Glassjaw) because his Crohn’s Disease has a tendency to cancel tour dates :(

My ringtone is E by Asian Kung Fu Generation.

by Eyeball Kid on Jan 29, 2010 2:45 PM PST up reply actions

I saw Glassjaw back in 2002 at The Graceland

Daryl had spent the 3 weeks prior in the hospital and it was only his second show back. He had to stop in the middle of the show and eat a peanut butter sandwich, which was pretty cool. Also appearing at that show were The Blood Brothers and American Nightmare. American Nightmare was pretty cool, especially since the lead singer was missing his right hand.

Are you a fan of Glassjaw? Because I always have a hard time finding people that have even heard of them, which greatly saddens me

I want to poop at your house - Thingray

by tootthekazoo on Jan 29, 2010 2:48 PM PST up reply actions

I seem to recall Glassjaw being pretty big over here for a while

a couple of Kerrang! covers (before they started putting MCR, Green Day and Fall Out Boy on the cover every week) and I had a couple of friends who were fans but I pretty much stayed at ‘I like what Ive heard but I haven’t heard much’.

by Eyeball Kid on Jan 29, 2010 2:56 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, I think they were much bigger in the UK and in the northeast over here, since that's where they started

At least Head Automatica has a decent following, which is keeping the lead singer employed

Awesome awesome duo out of Vancouver, No Age but poppier.

Husky hoops is depressing.

by Woodinville_12thMan on Jan 29, 2010 4:53 PM PST up reply actions

I really like that song, but the rest of their output is disappointing.

Like, I think that they can make great music (and Wet Hair is damn good), but they keep coming up short.

Given the amount of praise they got, not many others have this problem, so maybe I was just listening to it in the wrong mood.

by marc w on Jan 29, 2010 4:56 PM PST up reply actions

I can see your point, some of their stuff is better than the rest.

With that being said, I love the raw enthusiasm that the group puts out. It’s straight youthful exuberance and I think what the album does is capture the essence of being caught between childhood and adulthood. A lot of angst about leaving the teen years, it’s pretty chilling at times.

Husky hoops is depressing.

by Woodinville_12thMan on Jan 29, 2010 5:01 PM PST up reply actions

I bet they'd be awesome live.

And maybe I didn’t ‘get’ it as much because I don’t even remember leaving my teenage years anymore.

by marc w on Jan 29, 2010 5:03 PM PST up reply actions

Yes, I really want to see them. Sound like a potentially classic live band.

And I do think they are a definite younger-generation band, but that’s not to say that they can’t be appreciated by more than just teens-20s.

Husky hoops is depressing.

Who is your favorite vocalist?

Mine is probably Jonny Craig of Emarosa and ex-singer of Dance Gavin Dance. He has some damn good pipes and an amazing range.

by Kirk on Jan 29, 2010 2:41 PM PST reply actions

There are so many

In no particular order:

Billy Bragg
Joe Strummer
Craig Finn
Elvis Costello
Nick Cave
Neko Case
Rhett Miller

and that’s just the few I can think of off the top of my head.

by pdb on Jan 29, 2010 2:43 PM PST up reply actions

Maynard James Keenan

Matt Bellamy
Mark Lanegan
Tom Waits

by Eyeball Kid on Jan 29, 2010 2:47 PM PST up reply actions

I'll second Maynard

I’ll also add Daryl Palumbo, from the aforementioned HA/Glassjaw.

And since I grew up on country music, I have several favorites from that genre as well

Chris Cornell

Jeff Buckley

Agreed on Tom Waits

+John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats

by CKel on Jan 30, 2010 12:14 PM PST up reply actions

I was going to use this as a prompt for next week's one.

Damn…

Beth Gibbons.

Then at some distance behind because she’s in another solar system….

Chan Marshall
Matt Berninger
Mark Sandman
Monique Ortiz (maybe)
Seu Jorge

and I’m also a fan of Tom Waits and Don van Vliet for their range, though they inspire mixed reactions from many.

Least favorite? Maybe Kim Gordon. Or maybe I just hate the lyrics for most of the songs I hear her singing.

by ungoreatstefan on Jan 29, 2010 2:58 PM PST up reply actions

Nobody's a douchebag like Sting

and the two times I met Paul Westerberg he seemed like a perfectly fine fellow.

by pdb on Jan 29, 2010 3:00 PM PST up reply actions

I've never met Paul

But I heard he was kind of a dick, but I’m happy to be corrected!

I do really love The Police, Sting solo stuff, not so much.

by ungoreatstefan on Jan 29, 2010 3:02 PM PST up reply actions

He's got a reputation for being a bit prickly

and I couldn’t say that I know him, just that the couple times I met him he seemed decent enough. The first time I met him, I was with a friend who was obsessed with him and insisted we wait for him after a show. I’m not an autograph person, nor do I really care to meet celebrities/singers/whatnot, but I figured why not.

So the whole time we’re in line to meet him, I was thinking “what the hell do I say to this guy?” and by the time I got to where he was standing, all I could think of to say was “You know, the first time I saw the Replacements, both you and I were so drunk we could barely stand up”. He looked at me and just busted out laughing, and said “Man, those were the days, huh?” and then we chatted a bit and I went on my way. Funny.

Sting’s solo output is as embarrassing to his Police background as Rod Stewart’s is to his Faces legacy.

by pdb on Jan 29, 2010 3:06 PM PST up reply actions

It's hard to pick one, but Ella Fitzgerald is probably my favorite.

Others in no other order:

Kurt Cobain
Bob Marley
Maynard
Patsy Cline
Peter Tosh
Chris Cornell
Jeremy Enigk

I'll probably forget a lot but

my absolute favourite is Marcy Mays from Scrawl and the Afghan Whigs song My Curse.

Others:

David Thomas
Richard Hell
Mia Zapata
Kaia Wilson
Matthew Good
PJ Harvey
Patti Smith

and people working together
Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein
John Doe & Exene Cervenka
Greg Dulli & Mark Lanegan

I’m not sure if Henry Rollins and Iggy Pop count as vocalists, but they’re good too.

Looking at other posts, Westerberg’s good, too. I love the way he sings Androgynous.

Has anybody

Been listening to the new Beach House? I really enjoy it, but I think it’s a departure from their earlier albums, it’s more of a pop sound and less of that haunting beauty sound they had.

The new Yeasayer album is also a good album! It’s like they listened to The Talking Heads a ton and decided they wanted to emulate that.

Yeah, that song's pretty darn good. Haven't really delved into the whole album yet - just heard it once.

The new Yeasayer is pretty up and down to me, but I like the highs on it. Same as the last yeasayer record, I suppose.

by marc w on Jan 29, 2010 4:59 PM PST up reply actions

So I've been listening to "Down the River of Golden Dreams" quite a bit lately.

I’m glad I managed to rediscover Okkervil River, because there are some great songs on this album. I don’t know if I hold it up with their best, some of the songs are just not quite there, like “For The Enemy”, but “It Ends With a Fall”, “The Velocity of Saul at the Time of His Conversion”, and “Song About a Star” are all great. I really wish I could find a good youtube video of “The Velocity…” because that one knocked my socks off when I heard it again for the first time, so to speak.

Also, they’re the only band I’ve yet encountered that can do the whole overwrought emotional thing without it ringing falsely for me.

I like nearly all the songs off that album.

Which is bad in that the one song nearly ruins it for me. That song, of course, is NOT Westfall, which I think is pretty awesome.

I stumbled on it back in the days when Sheff was writing for audiogalaxy’s website and loved it, then forgot about it until Black Sheep Boy came out… then I was hooked again.

Its true, Bayani is a great album

There hasnt been any good new hip hop like that in a while, hopefully the new Blue Scholars EP will be fresh. Gotta love those UW beats

by E2ESQUARE on Jan 29, 2010 3:25 PM PST up reply actions

The beats Sabzi comes up with are awesome.

I like his Blue Scholars stuff better than what he’s done with RA Scion in Common Market, but the two of them represent the NW very well. Have you listened to the Oof! Ep yet?

by ZW21 on Jan 29, 2010 3:32 PM PST up reply actions

The Oof! EP was auight, but it wasnt up the overall level of quality that is Bayani

Also, I used to love Common Market (Tobacco Road is one of my most essential albums), but then I saw him live at Sasquatch and…..wow, that was the weirdest, most peculiar live hip hop performance I have ever seen.

by E2ESQUARE on Jan 29, 2010 3:35 PM PST up reply actions

I felt the same about Oof! I was disappointed the second half of the album was just instrumental tracks of the first half.

Yeah I could see Common Market being a little different in terms of a live show. I don’t listen to them as much as Blue Scholars, but you’re right, Tobacco Road, the song and album, are staples for them.

Post videos of your most incredible live music experiences!

I was lucky enough to be at Glastonbury 2007 where I managed to catch The Chemical Brothers on The Other stage. It was out-of-this-world and crazy as hell, simply the best performance I have ever seen at Glastonbury in all my times there! The crowd was mental, the lasers and pyro was stunning and it was just one of the most intense musical experiences I have ever been a part of.

Some kind soul posted part of it, our of their more famous songs Hey Boy, Hey Girl with the epic Evil Clown intro. It’s of course not as great as actually being there, but this certainly brings back a lot of great memories for me!

Please share videos of great live performances that you have been a part of!

by EnglishMariner on Jan 29, 2010 3:42 PM PST reply actions

One that immediatley comes to mind as far as a singular moment was seeing The Used on Warped Tour 2003.

During their set their singer climbed to the top of the stage dived into the crowd from the top of the canopy and landed on me an a friend of mine. It might not sound that crazy but here’s a pic of the stage to illustrate how insane an idea that is. It’s probably a three-or-so story fall.

I’ve certainly seen a lot better sets, but that one sticks out as a moment.
