Um. That's a hell of a raise
good for him but if he gets up to 5M in his second arb year I’m gonna have to start rooting for a trade.

If he is in line for another big raise next year, it would mean that he pitched pretty well.
And would have a lot of value as an established closer. That indeed would be a good time to trade him.

Exactly
And League steps up as the closer. Meanwhile, you get some good pieces for Mr David “Proven” Aardsma.
It’s the Putz shampoo. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Stupid Closer Title
Does he pitch any more innings than Lowe? No, he pitches less.
Does a run in the 9th hurt more than a run in the 8th? Not in any statistical sense. Maybe in a psychological sense.
Does an arbitrary title of “Closer” mean you get paid 2-3 times what you’re worth? I guess so.
I’m with Bearskin Rugburn. If he gets another huge raise next year, we should trade him.
Clarification
I don’t mean to imply that Aardsma isn’t worth 2.75 million. He likely will be. But that’s a huge amount to pay to someone in their first arbitration year with only one good year behind him. That’s almost as much as Felix got in his first arbitration year and Aardsma’s upside is about 2 WAR. At this rate, by the time we get to his 3rd year of arbitration, it’s debatable whether he’ll be even worth it.
like dawson said
If he has another good year closing, he’ll have that ‘closer value’ that some GMs love.
Then we can pull a J.J. Putz and get a good player or two for him.
Replicating the value we got in the Putz deal is probably too much to ask.
But I certainly wouldn’t complain if GMZ flipped a relief pitcher for another 3-5 win defensive god.
Dear Mets,
We have another great closer to trade, having a great closer is really important.
This one wont get injured, we promise.
Surely you could give us several minor league players that dont matter for him.
Dear Mets,
We have this great closer that would also make a spectacular set-up man for Francisco Rodriguez. It is really important to have a great set-up man to come in before your closer. This one won’t get injured, either. We promise.
Surely you could part with Angel Pagan and some useless minor leaguers that don’t mean anything to your organization.
Say it with me: Washington Capitals. Capitals.
