Felix Thread #2
I may need to sleep, but you guys clearly do not.
I know we don't have any great details right now, but I'm dead serious when I say that tomorrow should be Wear Your Felix Jersey (Or Shirt) To Work Day.
Graham's update: Blavia (who broke the Guti deal) tweets that it's a 5 year/$78M deal. Hot damn! Also, great call by Matthew.

Just do the following
Take a sharpie and modify the “l” in Clement to an ‘F’, then leave the ‘e’, cross out the ‘men’ then take some white out and make the ‘t’ an ‘l’, then write in ‘ix’. No need to go buying another jersey ;-).

Good Night, God Bless, We are going to kick ass in the West next year...
WORLD SERIES HERE WE COME.! Jeff, it’s going to be as great as you wrote.
IT’S OUR TIME AND WE ARE READY TO DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So i've sort of gotten over the crazy joy from this news.
But now I can’t stop wondering how much of our remaining this takes up. I’ve been trying to do the maths on each of the deals over this off season based on Dave’s estimates of what the budget was going to be, and barring a ridiculously team friendly deal this seems like it will pretty much eat up the rest of our 2010 budget. Is this the last move of the off season or is this the kind of thing that ownership would open a discretionary fund to pay for?
Cause if they are right up against the wall, then they must be pretty sure about Saunders starting out with the big league club handedness be damned. But for all I know, and given the trajectory of the off season thus far, it’s just as likely that Jack Z has some other insanely impossible trade on the back-burner for Justin Upton or something.
Nope
The Felix money for this year, assuming they’re paying market value during his arb years, is already accounted for. This does nothing to this and next years budget.

Francisco Blavia
In English that says (roughly) that until this week the difference between the two sides was about 10 million dollars, the team wanting 5 yrs/75 million and Felix’s camp wanting 5/85.
I don't really see a problem with either of these
...and now I'm here
Just like ESPN said Washburn IS TOTALLY SIGNING WITH THE M's...
He said:
I have been told could be four years guaranteed with more than one vesting option year, possible one mutual option year after vesting option, or a five-year guarantee with similar options, plus incentives that would bring the total value of the contract well over $100 million
(emphasis mine)

It's a bargain
Like Dave just tweeted, once you subtract the expected arbitration awards from the contract we’re buying out his free agent years for about 18mil per season. No doubt the Yankees or Red Sox would’ve beaten that by a significant amount if he had walked.

Every time I think about the Lackey contract and then compare it to 5/78 for Felix, a big smiles appears on my face.
Mostly because it was the Red Sox who gave Lackey his contract.
The fact that we re-signed Felix for slightly less than what Lackey's getting...
means that I’m officially over Beltre leaving. Suck it Red Sox!!!!
Ok, maybe I’m not completely over Beltre… but the Sox can still suck it.
Remember Boston can afford to overpay - their budget is now so huge it is only $30 Million below the Yankees.

Seriously
We all know where we’ve been, time to dream about where we are going.
It is critically important that we never forget where we came from and always acknowledge how blessed we are to have the management that we have now
We cannot take what we have for granted, ever, and forgetting the terrible ineptitude of the past is the first step in that process.

It’s your guy’s choice, not mine.
I just think it's nice to have it as a reminder
Almost all of the content is pretty positive now, it would be easy to get too caught up in it and expect more and more and more out of our front office. They are all really good at what they do, obviously, but they are at some point going to face limitations out of their control, so we need something to temper our expectations a little and appreciate what we’ve got.
Plus, it's kind of like a Mariner version of this

Math, but basic math since I put off all of my math credits for my AA until my last two quarters.
As it stands, I only have four, so four it is!

Woo!
That’s my first reaction.
My second is “I sure hope he doesn’t kill anyone or get fat in the next few years.”
And credit where credit is due, both of them really seemed to be humbled by 2008.
They could have easily asserted more control over the organization in response to that lousy season, but they took a chance and let GMZ do his thing.
And they deserve a fair amount of credit for that
Sure seems like they’ve learned something about their past mistakes.
Other Mariner signings from Rotoworld:
The Mariners and RHP Mark Lowe avoided arbitration Tuesday by agreeing to a one-year, $1.15 million contract.
Lowe, 26, had a respectable 3.26 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 69/29 K/BB ratio in 80 innings last season as the Mariners’ middle relief workhorse. He will serve in a similar role this year and should do just as well.
A Few Hail Zduriencik!
Sure, why the hell not
that’s a perfectly reasonable contract

Awesome. He's still an above-average pitcher (at times).
Worth almost $6 million last year according to FanGraphs.

Baker
Just got off the phone with Wil Polidor, one of the agents for Felix Hernandez. He has a flight from Venezuela to Miami tonight, then another to Seattle tomorrow. He hopes to have this wrapped up by Friday.
Polidor told me this will be a five-year deal, no option years attached. There are reports out today that it’s for $78 million, but Polidor would not confirm that. The Mariners had wanted a four-year deal, Hernandez six years, so the two sides met in the middle with five. The way this shakes out, Hernandez will still be only 28 when he’s up for free agency again.
I’m slightly disappointed that we decided not to tack on an option year, but oh well.
A Few Hail Zduriencik!
We'll just resign him again
after we win 5 straight world series of course

Since it's officially buy another jersey day...
I though about getting a Felix jersey but I’m thinking a custom Zduriencik would be even better. Question is what number to put below it… Would it just be dumb to make it “1”, or awesome?
They haven't heard about our ark? This FO keeps everything quiet.
“During the past 40 days, Zduriencik and his front-office team have done everything but (A) add a 30-home run guy and (B) built an ark.”
Great quote from the article.

Dicussing who gets the credit for the extension, a caller just said "Happy Felix Day" to Softy.
Dave obviously had no idea what that meant…
I've been singing this all day
And had a dream last night that Felix was coming out to pitch the final inning of a Game 7, with this as his entrance music.

This is the best offseason in Mariner history isn't it?
I can’t think of another offseason that had nearly this many awesome signings.
So the Felix tweets on the sidebar are pretty awesome.

We got Felix for less than the Red Sox got John Lackey

Felix is the ninth-highest paid SP in baseball now.
Between Jason Schmidt (!) and Derek Lowe. Barry Zito makes ~2 MM/year more than Felix.
I love it when a plan comes together
