Brad's Back but Branyan's Back's Probably Not Behind...
In the Seattle P-I blog this morning, Greg Johns reports that Brad Nelson signs another minor league contract with the Mariners. Link is here: http://blog.seattlepi.com/baseball/archives/190972.asp.
I, for one, am convinced Brad covers a loooot of ground at first base:
In this article, Greg Johns links to Jim Street's article saying Russell Branyan is convinced he's not coming back to Seattle:
One guy you won't see at first base is Russell Branyan, who is looking for another place to land after the Mariners dealt for Kotchman. Jim Street of mariners.com caught up with Branyan yesterday and the big slugger said he's disappointed to be moving on, but has a couple teams interested.
In Street's article, Branyan says this:
"I felt we would have moved off the number we had talked about, but we never got that chance. The talks just stopped, and I could see the writing on the wall."
Personally, I'm hoping that's just Zduriencik playing hardball. But there are legitimate concerns about his back. That other teams have moved on from Branyan as well is further data in this regard. Branyan's options certainly are dwindling...

I feel bad for Branyan that he got injured,
He deserves to get some payday for his performance last year. I hope he gets a decent offer from some team.
Teams deserve to weigh their risks and rewards.
I don’t see how a past performance means Russ deserves anything. I like the guy, too, but the business of baseball can be unforgiving sometimes.

Yeah I know.
I just hope some (stupid??) team pays him too much.
GMZ has heavily hinted that we have done our due diligence on him, which I assume is related to his back, and thus have resorted to plan B.
I’d love to see Branyan back as he is a really exciting hitter to watch, but I just can’t see it happening. I can see him ending up in KCR or CWS as a DH.
I can see him Kansas.
I’d feel pretty sorry for him though if he does end up there.
Did you fall in love with Miguel Batista? And he rejected you?
Sad to see this happen.
At the same time, though, this will teach FA’s that Jack doesn’t mess around. He gives you an offer, you counter, but if you’re asking too much, Jack moves on without looking back. You would think Juan Gonzalez would be the poster boy of accepting a contract (not that Branyan was asking for $150 million or anything).
Too bad we don't have quite the same AAA log jam at 1st as we did last year
Watching Brad Nelson play the OF was hilariously awesome.
Hehehehe Bryan was a LaHairable outfielder.
You got slurved!

Nelson looks like he's in the woods and doesn't know for sure what poison ivy looks like.

It was decent fun.
Jeff was consistently at a pretty high level with them, even though there was often one or two replies better than the original, which may have been why he stopped it.

Would signing Nelson make it easier to include Carp in a trade?
Or is it just a move to increase depth in Tacoma?
He's just free depth as far as I'm concerned.
And I don’t think anything really stops us from including Carp in a trade if we wanted to. Finding a replacement AAA 1B isn’t too hard.

Marcel LOOOOOOVES Carp, by the way.
Projected for a .355 wOBA over 232 PA.
What.

Marcel assumes average performance from any minor leaguer
and Carp’s only Major League data input is a .415 OBP over 65 PAs.

This topic needs more Joe Nelson
because I still confuse the two players. Plus who does not like a AAA version of Mike Jacobs, well probably AA version but still. The Rainiers need more Nelson’s. Resigning Jeff Nelson would be awesome also. A double Nelson would be a great name for an OF assist double play.

Bubba Nelson is available, I believe (he was even mentioned at the USSM event!)
I still don’t understand why BRAD Nelson wanted to resign here. I didn’t understand it last year.
Given his 2009, his chances to get an MLB contract were essentially zero, but I thought he might try to pick a team with fewer 1B options. I guess Tacoma will be marginally less crowded without LaHair or Clement, but he’ll be behind Carp at 1B, and they’ll undoubtedly bring in more minor league free agents. Eh, hopefully he’ll have a bounce back year and help the R’s.
Same, Pittsburgh, San Diego, the Cubs, and Washington look like much better places
Where he could possibly play himself in AAA or as MLB PH/platoon bat into more ABs. I am rooting for him also. I hope he lands in Pittsburg with Clement, could steal 1B/LF role from Pearce and Garrett Jones with a good spring/early AAA hot streak.
He might of resigned here if Z offered him good money on his minor league contract, maybe higher MLB base if he is promoted($500,000 maybe) . Unfortunately, Cots does not carry complete minor league contract values.

Why don't we bring back Jon Nelson while we're at it?

The Russell Branyan situation
reminds me very much of the current Johnny Damon situation with the Yankees.
Of course both teams have what they consider “viable” replacements already in place, but when it’s considered that both players are upgrades to their replacements, and the fact that both are currently dealing with dead markets…at least there’s a legitimate reason the M’s haven’t heavily pursued Branyan that aggressively, with his back and everything.
