New Year's First Rumor Thread!
I figured it was time to once again call in a new Rumor/News Thread; the old one seems dead. There is some interesting news going around the MLB, like Damon's continually diminishing value.
GMZ provided M's fans with a late Xmas/New Years gift with the extension of Franklin Gutierrez, keeping the stellar defensive center fielder with the Mariners for another 4 years at a bargain price of $20.5 Million.
In the past couple of weeks, we've also seen Adrian Beltre sign with the dreaded Red Sox, and Casey Kotchman swap coasts in the process (Geoff Baker Link). While we are all sad to see Beltre go (especially Red--we all feel your loss!), it was long assumed since the Mariners offered him arbitration that he would sign with the Red Sox for a shot at a World Series title.
But alas, there is no shortage of action during the off-season. In the past three days we've seen the Reds ink star Cuban Aroldis Chapman. Dayton Moore has once again pierced through the hearts of Kansas City fans with the signing of Scott Podsednik, and Brian Sabean pulls out another veteran signing from his bag of predictable tricks by signing Aubrey Huff.
Rumor has it that the Cubs are going after Ben Sheets. So the question becomes, does Z want Sheets as well?

Washburn turned down 1/5M from the Twins
Meanwhile, Larry Larue has a piece on Branyan saying that, “[He] hasn’t had a multi-year offer yet. Hasn’t had, other than Seattle’s, a viable offer from any team.”
That would be uncharacteristic of Dayton Moore.
Branyan is not a crappy ex-Mariner.

If the rumours about his back are true, then he may fall into the sucky ex-Mariner catagory [sadly].

What I don't understrand is that the M's already made Branyan an offer..
So they must not feel the back is that terrible. They tried to re-sign him back before he hit free agency. What has changed between now and then regarding his back?
Grrrr

Marlins agree to spend more money.
Interesting… their system isn’t as stacked as it’s been in the past right now, so increasing payroll might be the only way to stay competitive in the near future.
Hey everyone, Follow me on Twitter!, check out My Baseball Blog, and Last.fm me!
Once they get their new stadium in a couple of years, their payroll should go up anyways.
So this will probably be moot.

From all indications I've heard Ben Sheets doesn't want to come here and Z isn't super high on him.
But it’s not like I have a “source” it’s just the general sentiment I’ve heard.
If this is the case, then Z will probably sign him tomorrow.

Pirates hoarding relievers
Working to sign Carrasco, Dotel
Only mention this because I’m surprised Carrasco only gets a minor league deal. May have been a mopup type but a 3.46 FIP ain’t bad. With the market for relievers, maybe the M’s could pick up someone like Calero on the cheap.

another rumor is that the A's may be looking to trade Scott Hairston
Mets and Molina are closer to deal
Nationals are trying to sign Orlando Hudson
I would take Hairston as our RHB 4th OF
as long as he was easily aquired for little or no value.
by Edgar for Pres on Jan 13, 2010 5:20 PM PST up reply actions
Hairston's a starter
and young, cheap, under team control. The A’s just traded for him last summer. He won’t be cheap in my book. I’m interested to see the source for the Hairston rumor.
Don’t care about Molina, still wish we could sign Hudson but it makes little sense.

Actually
The A’s had Hairston, Davis, Sweeney, and then went and signed Crisp. Who is worse than all 3. But I guess that means Hairston is expendable.
Does anyone still think Billy Beane is smart?

So Eric Bedard is still a free agent
Any chance Seattle could sign him to a one year, low base salary, incentive laden deal? Or maybe even a minor league deal (le sigh…).
Base Salary: League Minimum
I would imagine incentives would go like this:
Pitch at least 100 innings…………………$500,000
Pitch at least 150 innings…………………$1,000,000
Pitch at least 200 innings…………………$2,000,000
Pitch in the 6th inning in a game….$1,000,000
Pitch a complete game…………………….$3,000,000
Match your 2007 SO total…………………$4,000,000
Do not get injured…………………………….$5,000,000
Have Seattle forget how shitty of a trade it was to acquire you………$10,000,000

Diamondbacks just signed Adam LaRoche
…maybe that makes Conor Jackson available for OF/1B?
by ManifestDestiny on Jan 14, 2010 6:56 AM PST reply actions
Well at least they've followed up the horrific move with 2 pretty decent moves.
$4-$5M for 1 year. Neato.
And I’d say Chris Young would be the outfielder that would be more available if anything. I would guess Arizona is going into 2010 with an outfield of Upton-Parra-Jackson.
A Few Hail Zduriencik!
Of course in a perfect world, either Parra or Young is the CF, the other is the 4th OF and Byrnes gets released.
A Few Hail Zduriencik!
YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES
A source told Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic that the Diamondbacks are “leaning toward” releasing outfielder Eric Byrnes.
A spot on the D’Backs’ 40-man roster needs to be cleared for first baseman Adam LaRoche, who signed a one-year deal Thursday afternoon. Byrnes hit just .226 with a .270 on-base percentage last season and is entering the final season of a three-year, $30 million contract. Most of his struggles can be related to fluke injuries but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s no longer an adequate everyday outfielder.
A Few Hail Zduriencik!
Expanding
PHOENIX – Two people in the Diamondbacks front office tell 3TV’s Brad Cesmat that outfielder Eric Byrnes will be paid $11 million dollars in the buyout that should happen in the next 24hrs.
As much as I hated Cirillo and Player A while they were Mariners, Byrnes was worse than both of them combined, in every sense. And he was paid $30M to do it.
Fuck you Eric Byrnes. I hope you never get another job in baseball again. Good riddance you piece of shit.
A Few Hail Zduriencik!
Hey, another RH OF option for the Mariners!
FUCK THE ANGELS!
by Fuckmikereilly on Jan 14, 2010 4:18 PM PST up reply actions
I wouldn't see him as a bad option.
For league minimum, he can provide a few things we could use. Right-handed hitter that can play all three outfield positions, good pinch runner, would probably do well enough hitting against left-handers. I suppose it would be nice if he could play 1B or the infield. That would certainly make him more useful.
by nathaniel dawson on Jan 14, 2010 5:44 PM PST up reply actions
I have 1000 irrational answers to this, but instead I'll give you the one rational answer as to why Byrnes wouldn't be a fit.
Whoever fills the role of right handed outfielder is gonna have to no mind being on the bench once in a while. And one of the reasons I hate Eric Byrnes so much is that he flipped his shit when the team benched him.
So I don’t think he’d accept that role here.
A Few Hail Zduriencik!
He's worse than most of the options out there
Good defense at the corners most likely, but little value beyond that.

I would so much rather have LaRoache at that price than Kotchman
assuming we don’t do anything else with the remaining $$$
Exactly what I was thinking. Oh well, I guess you can't have it all.
I fucking hate you Mariners
Me too but he priced himself out of our market for too long and it was too risky to wait
In hindsight we could’ve had him for a bargain but he wasn’t really an option until he rejected the Giants offer and the market for him collapsed.
Sheets reportedly throwing for some teams, including Ms
Via Tim K’s article:
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/hotstove09/columns/story?columnist=kurkjian_tim&id=4824942
Most interesting parts for me is how he mentions watching Branyan in Seattle and Tim mentions his familiarity with Jack Z. It sure would be nice, but I wonder how much money the M’s have left to spend on a pitcher?
Valverde-->Tigers
Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports reports that reliever Jose Valverde has signed a two-year, $14 million contract with the Tigers.
The new contract reportedly includes an option for a third year at $9 million. The Tigers considered going with some combination of Joel Zumaya, Ryan Perry and Daniel Schlereth in the closer role, but they actually upgrade bigtime from Fernando Rodney here. Likewise, Valverde actually managed to do quite well for himself, given that the Tigers were the only realistic possibility for him to close. Because Valverde was a Type A free agent, the Tigers will surrender their first-round pick (19th).

I'd still much much rather have Max Scherzer in the rotation instead of Edwin Jackson.
A Few Hail Zduriencik!
Yeah, but if you really wanted Scherzer why not just trade Jackson for him straight up
Arizona probably would have preferred that. It’s just a dumb team, and the worst thing is that it made the Yankees better :(.
Curtis Granderson is owed 5.5mil this year and 8.25mil next year
In other words, less than Jose Valverde is being paid. Curtis Granderson is a 3.5-4 WAR player. Jose Valverde is a ~1 WAR player.
I guess if they’re trying to save money 3 years from now….
The stupid, it burns.
Is that the light at the end of the tunnel, or the headlights of an oncoming train?
This kind of thing makes me think the FO is right to drag their feet a little with Felix.
If there’s to be a readjustment in the player market, now is not the best time to be locking up a player for half a decade (I’m looking at you, St. Louis).
De Gutibus non disputandum est
by Bearskin Rugburn on Jan 14, 2010 3:03 PM PST up reply actions
5/80 would be more realistic
Felix is a lot better than Josh Johnson, and his final two arb years are going to be worth something in line with his market value, which is probably like $20M/per
by seattlebruin on Jan 14, 2010 5:33 PM PST up reply actions
Actually, it might mean it's a great time to lock him up to an extension.
Prices seem cheap this offseason, and if one were to believe the economy is going to rebound in the next 2-3 years, the M’s might be able to secure more of a below-market deal for Felix.
Maybe that’s what you meant by dragging their feet — waiting until Felix and his agent come down to terms more acceptable for the team.

Looking at it I really only liked it because they had an outfield surplus and traded it for a decent young 3B, but then again they could have not signed Crisp, kept Hairston (and Cunningham) and signed someone like Crede.
So maybe I don’t like this trade for the A’s. Or just their offseason in general.

Well now Brock has found the source and is backtracking a bit.
BrockandSalk “Sketchy reports” on Washburn are based on http://is.gd/6u8G4 where Cafardo says the M’s have “re-engaged.” How is that “close?” #internet
From that article:
2. Jarrod Washburn, LHP, free agent – He had knee surgery after his horrible tenure in Detroit, where the feeling was that his mechanics were disrupted by the problem in that joint. While the pitchers still on the market are looking toward Randy Wolf’s three-year, $30 million deal with Milwaukee, it doesn’t appear that they’ll find that kind of commitment out there. The Mariners, one of the most active teams in free agency, have re-engaged on Washburn, but he may head to the National League. The Brewers could have interest in the Wisconsin native.
Doesn’t sound like anything to me.
A Few Hail Zduriencik!
Nope.
Also, I don’t think I’m ever going to get used to citing Twitter.
Plus, if the Mariners wanted that kind of pitcher for the last spot in the rotation, why not just go with French?
Doesn’t pass the smell test at all.
A Few Hail Zduriencik!
French looked pretty bad
I don’t want to say Washburn is good but he’d be worth a couple million I think.

A Question and a Proclamation that doesn't warrant a new fanpost
Would Ty Wiggington work as the utility guy the M’s need? He plays the right side of the infield to complement Hannahan on the right, and also has considerable time in the outfield. I know he’s not great value ($3.5 due in final year of contract), but as a safety net for multiple positions we could do worse. I also do not believe in the negative WAR value he posted last year. All of the predictions have him bouncing back from an uncharacteristically bad outing last year, and he would improve upon his UZR from last year if acquired, as he would play much easier defensive positions (LF, 2B, 1B) as opposed to 3B. That’s pretty much the logic for acquiring him. Now someone tell me why the Mariners shouldn’t.
Avatars make the site look pretty. I still don't have one.
A year ago it might've been a decent option
Now, I dunno. His defense is below average and his bat fell off a cliff for some reason last year. Probably won’t be as bad as he was but I think we could do better.
Ideally
we would have had Jerry Hairston Jr., but that ship has sailed.
