Don Wakamatsu and Manager of the Year
Does he get it, does he fail? I've figured he was a damn near lock for the award since mid June, but with the increasing media infatuation with Ron Washington and the Rangers it has me asking this question.
Now, there is no doubt that Ron Ron is a good manager, and has done a terrific job this season, its not like the Rangers didn't improve either. The Rangers are about to pass their win total for last season, and we've already done that ourselves. But going from winning 61 games to probably finishing with a record in the 80's area...and from a rookie manager...pretty good Wak.
What do you think?

Give him the award for benching Yuni.
Give GMZ the executive award for trading Yuni.

Wak should win for telling people to appreciate Ichiro for being awesome at baseball
and not to hate him because he’s Japanese and weird.

Scioscia will win because of Adenhart and all the other injuries the Angels have had.
I’m not arguing whether that’s valid or not, but I think that’s what’s going to happen.

This is my thought exactly.
I don’t think it’s valid, personally, but the people who make these decisions already love Scioscia, so I’ve already accepted that with all the problems the Angels have overcome, he’s going to get it.

Because it's Scioscia that got his whole line-up to have career years?
I actually bought a Betancourt t-shirt.
P.S. Fuck the Angels!

Erick Aybar
Chone FIggins (again)
Maicer Izturis
Morales
There’s a reason that the Angels are going to win 10-15 more games than what was predicted.

How can you have a career year "again"?
Figgins average has hovered around .300 most of his career, and his walk rate has improved every year as a starter. His OBP has gotten better because he worked really hard at it. Those skills aren’t going to vaporize overnight. This isn’t a fluke. The only reason he wasn’t this good in 2008 is because he tried to play through a leg injury.
Maicer Izturis is 28, and therefore expected to put up his best numbers. Even then, when one looks back to 2006 and 2007, this season is hardly a significant departure from the numbers he put up in those seasons.
Aybar is 25. How the hell can you call this a career year? It’s his second season getting full playing time at short. He was a highly touted prospect for a reason.
Morales is 26. This is his FIRST full season in the majors. How is this a career year?
As far as the prediction being off 10-15 games, that happens every year. Which is exactly what I told you would happen in April.

Yes the Mariner blog is a wonderful place for an argument between a Cardinals fan and an Angels fan

I'm sure how this has do with me being a Cards fan

It looked like there was a history here and I wanted to make it known that this was not the place
So not really very much except it was a talking point

Even if its a meaningless award
You seriously couldn’t give a fuck if he gets recognition?
Carlos Silvelite
Not in the least
Recognition is not important. Wak doesn’t need validation, he doesn’t need a pat on the head – he’s good at his job, he knows it, his peers know it, his team knows it. What else matters?

Bullshit
You’re telling me that you don’t appreciate when someone praises you for a job well done?

Why would I need someone to tell me I know how to do my job
I know I know how to do my job and everyone else I work with does too

Here is a question for you Graham
Why did you let FanGraphs use tRA? You already knew it was the best, or one of the bests stats out there I’m sure, and it was already publicly available. However, FanGraphs is obviously more well known than StatCorner is, and thus making tRA availabe on FanGpraphs would give it more exposure.
I’m sure that a lot of it was that you wanted people to be able to use the best stats they could to judge players; however, I would bet that at least a small part of it was that you wanted to get recognition for creating the stat.

Mainly because I didn't see what purpose keeping it to SC held
I was made aware that most teams in baseball use tRA before the switch happened, so the additional exposure gained from Fangraphs doesn’t really help me in terms of any meaningful career progression. So I’d say it’s just because I got frustrated with people using FIP without being aware that there’s an alternative that’s less controversial and at least as good.

Or, to put it another way
Yes, I like validation, but praise from strangers and people I don’t really know means very little compared to those I like and respect. And I generally already know what they think.
by Graham MacAree on Sep 12, 2009 11:06 PM PDT up reply actions
I appreciate it when it comes from people I respect or for whom I work
when it comes from random strangers I couldn’t give two shits.

I would care much more if Felix wins the Cy Young. Manager of the Year is just hard to get pumped up about.

I give a fuck
Wak for Manager of the Year.
Remember when Ron Washington was a hair's breadth away from getting canned?
Amazing what some defense and an influx of young talent can do.
and a bottomless pit of cash spent on his team
Hellen Keller could win Manager of the Year with that team.

Edanger6 comment
Edanger6, right on re: Girardi. Boston and NY managers should be INELIGIBLE for this award. I would consider giving the award to Gardy, but he has Mauer and Morneau.
Josh Normand
RonRon winning manager of the year would be akin to Michael Young winning the gold glove last year.
