it's a shame the Guillen extension fell apart

Can Dayton Moore be considered the worst GM in baseball?
by Wilder. on Sep 4, 2009 9:48 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Here's a good interview with Moore
Where he calls out his own players, while trying to defend his manager Trey Hillman.
It’s not his fault they suck at fundamentals .. it’s ..uhhh .. the player’s fault!

I at least give him a little credit for telling all the people who think it's always the manager's fault to eat shit.
But this “the players need to play better” mentality also implies that he thinks the Royals’ problems can be fixed with coaching. Sure, they may suck at fundamentals and should probably do a few more infield drills, but they also have very little talent. You need better baseball players.

Well, he specifically calls out Billy Butler for not being able to turn the 3-6-3 double play. Isn’t that something Butler could have picked up in the minors? Instead of just genetically not being able to complete this task?

He gets my vote.
I just don’t see anyone else out there making decisions on the same level as Moore.

I believe Moore said, when defending his track record:
“We’ve acquired Willie Bloomquist, and he’s been a gamer for us.”
by Decatur on Sep 5, 2009 4:15 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
"Turns out that regular playing time actually makes Willie worse."
No.
That just can’t be true.

It almost disappoints me that Willie's not an exactly 0.0 WAR player.

Yes, it would be nice if he defined replacement level.
And then we could refer to other players as ‘Wins above Bloomquist’

Amazing
The Royals have actually managed to acquire roughly -5 wins worth of ex-Mariners.
That takes work.
by The Ancient Mariner on Sep 4, 2009 10:29 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Hey, not all their acquisitions have been terrible.
They got Mike Jacobs and Kyle Farnsworth for only $7.5M this year. And they finally sent that piece of crap Alex Gordon down to the minors.

Yes, but they aren't ex-Mariners
though Kyle’s brother was.

Poring over the WAR leaderboards,
I have to say that, for the 34th year in a row, I had no idea Chase Utley was having such a monster season.

He has the most quiet 7-8 win seasons ever.
And somehow the MVP voters never take notice.
You got slurved!

Does it mean something that the seven worst position players are in the A.L.?
So much for the DH advantage!

It says that league average hitters are better
by Graham on Sep 4, 2009 12:44 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Really?
Is RAA relative to the league? Genuine question, because I assumed that the “average” was over all of MLB.
by b_rider on Sep 4, 2009 1:16 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
As far as I know, yes
Fangraphs could calc things differently than SC though
by Graham on Sep 4, 2009 1:40 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Seriously is their entire lineup below replacement??
Would they lose to the average AAA team?
by ARock on Sep 4, 2009 2:04 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Speaking of WAR, how many wins would a league-average catcher be worth?
Since they don’t have UZR for catchers, it’s kind of confusing.

Depending on how much he plays, I think it's around 3 wins.
For example, Yadier Molina this year or Benji Molina last year. Of course, that’s under the assumption that all catchers are equal defensively. Apply your own adjustments there, I guess.

Wow. Vernon Wells is even worse than I thought.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.

And they have him for five more seasons and ~$100 million dollars!
