Griffey not ready to retire

"If it works out for both sides, I'm fine," Griffey told The Associated Press before the Mariners opened a four-game series against the Oakland Athletics on Thursday night. "We'll figure it out at the end of the year. We've still got 30 days."

While Griffey won't go as far as to say he's leaning toward playing in 2010, he'd be game for another year in Seattle if the situation was right for both himself and the club.

The slugger said his representatives have had preliminary talks with the Mariners and another meeting would take place soon after the season ends.

He has enjoyed his role as a mentor for the young players and believes this franchise is close to turning the corner.

"I want to be part of this," he said. "We're building something."

Ugh. I love you Junior but you should have retired last year.

I would love to have him come back as bench coach or hitting coach or something

but he really does not need to be a player any more.

My guess is if he returns

he’ll get the Mike Sweeney role

by Poochie on Sep 4, 2009 9:25 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't even want that for him

Really, he just needs to realize that he should not be playing at all next year. He can barely walk, he can’t really hit – why keep going? Coach.

I never wanted him here in the first place

His sunny disposition has been a pleasant surprise, but at this point the only role he fit for is first base coach

by Poochie on Sep 4, 2009 9:47 AM PDT up reply actions

I just keep waiting for him to pull a Barbaro as he rounds second after a last-gasp home run

then they’ll put up a tent to shield what comes next from the fans, and it’ll all be over with.

I don’t want Griffey to be put down on the field. Please, Junior, hang ’em up.

NO!!!

(It’s Poythress, btw)

I’m his hugest fan boy, but he’s not THAT close to the bigs. Sept. 2010 at the absolute earliest, if even then…

I haven't seen him in person yet...

…but don’t rule out 1B. He’s slow but he’s adequate there at worst. He’s got enough power to hit 25+ bombs in the bigs. Maybe not QUITE Branyan-esque, but certainly a righty Branyan isn’t a terrible comp.

"If it works out for both sides, I'm fine,"

I think people are overreacting a bit. Yeah, he’d like to come back, but it appears he knows that’s not very realistic unless he takes a Mike Sweeney type of role. I want him to retire too. It’s not like this article says that he’s definitely not retiring and will demand to play a significant role on the 2010 team. Honestly, I bet he’s gonna retire anyway; getting worked up about this seems silly…

Watching Griffey and Sweeney this year I keep thinking about Bull Durham.

There has to be at least 2 guys somewere in the minors that could be a better DH than Griffey and/or Sweeney. So some guy never gets a chance to play in the majors because some nice veteran can’t understand his playing days are over.

Griffey and Sweeney have been playing on someone elses time for the last 3 or 4 years.

No. Some guy never gets a chance to play in the majors because baseball management can’t understand a veteran’s playing days are over. Blaming this on Griffey is idiotic.

If a team is willing to pay him, why should he should retire? If you liked your job, wouldn’t you want to do it as long as you could and as long as someone continued to pay you? If the Mariners offered you a major-league deal next season, would you take it? Because I’m willing to bet Griffey’s still better than you.

He'll be back. I've already accepted it.

It probably won’t be a GMZ level decision.
I have this dream that pride starts talking to him and he gets in a little better shape this winter.

Whether you or anyone else likes it or not, the fact that everyone on last year's team hated each other is a story.

Baker is a beat writer and it is his job to report stories. This whole “Baker created a controversy out of nothing” thing is fucking stupid.

by Aaron Campeau on Sep 5, 2009 1:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Whether you or anyone else likes it or not, the facts indicate that Baker promoted that shit way more than necessary

His main “source” Carlos Silva said this year that he “wasn’t talking to you reporters because you try to stir up shit”.

This is Baker’s main “source” speaking.

Of course Carlos said it to a different newspaper and the reporter wrote that he was completely perturbed (not being the person who basked in the shit) by why Silva said it to him in particular, but it seems obvious that Silva feels “used”, manipulated and is sick of reporters in general.
And despite being on the DL Silva is in the dugout for the games and he doesn’t seem to be creating problems himself this year.

by Sam Regens on Sep 5, 2009 4:47 PM PDT up reply actions

And the way Baker "reported" it was that Ichiro was the problem

He didn’t report that “everyone on last year’s team hated each other”, as you claim.
(If you’re going to try to call people who disagree with your viewpoint “fucking stupid” don’t try to spin things.)

Baker wrote that Ichiro was hated by a “lot of people on the team” and was causing friction which he indicated was a cause of the team’s terrible record. The point he was trying to sell always was Ichiro as the focus, the big problem.
Not a few underperforming loud mouth complainers.
By the way, Baker never did specify how many players “hated” Ichiro, he just “reported” that you would be surprised to know how huge their numbers were.

Big difference.

by Sam Regens on Sep 5, 2009 5:13 PM PDT reply actions

You are inferring that Baker believes that Ichiro was the problem.

I never understood why people thought that.

I didn’t call you fucking stupid, I called an opinion fucking stupid. And it I will continue to call it a fucking stupid opinion, because I believe that it is.

by Aaron Campeau on Sep 5, 2009 5:19 PM PDT up reply actions

How would you feel if I told you I also know for a fact, from different sources, that a lot of Ichiro's teammates didn't like him?

Regardless of whether or not that was justifiable (and, no, in terms of contributions it wasn’t), that doesn’t mean it wasn’t true. Ichiro was not and is not a real popular guy in the clubhouse.

by Jeff Sullivan on Sep 5, 2009 5:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Ok I can understand that

Some underperforming players envious and resenting their enigmatic superstar, forming a clique. I can understand it but feel contempt for these complaining millionaires who weren’t doing their job properly and were just complaining/ trying to find things to criticize about the best player on the team.

The main issue I had with Baker’s writing was that he tried to intimate that Ichiro’s presence was the main problem causing the big suckfest that was the 2008 Mariners.

The harsh spotlight should have been on a bunch of underperforming whiners. But Baker seemingly coddled these backstabbers.

by Sam Regens on Sep 6, 2009 12:21 AM PDT up reply actions

To a degree I agree with you

but like it or not, this was a big story, and Baker followed the angle as long as he could because (A) it was interesting, and (B) at the end of the day he benefits from traffic.

by Jeff Sullivan on Sep 6, 2009 12:56 AM PDT up reply actions

I think that inferring that Baker tried to implicate Ichiro as being the problem is really, really unfair.

I think that certain people read things a certain way and it took off from there. I never took anything away from Baker’s stories on the issue as “Hey, a lot of dudes hate Ichiro.” People didn’t like hearing that, and because Baker was the source, he got the blame.

by Aaron Campeau on Sep 6, 2009 3:45 AM PDT up reply actions

The difference in how various people relate to an object, situation, shared experience is interesting.

Like the reporting for the M’s. The style of Shannon Drayer vs. Baker. Same team, players, situations, yet they find such different stories, quotes, angles of approach. I’m not commenting to compare the two and who is the better or worse, nor their respective audiences.

I just wonder about the differences in their audiences as individual people, do any of them read both reporters consistently? How do their readers break down in age group, or by gender? Would Drayers audience prefer romantic comedies and long walks on the beach? Would Baker’s audience prefer spy movies and thrillers?

by Kermit. on Sep 6, 2009 10:25 AM PDT up reply actions

I subscribe to both feeds, so I read them both fairly consistently.

Baker seems to get information out there quicker and posts more frequently, but I slightly prefer Shannon’s perspective. Baker is usually an interesting read, but I find him to be too wordy and self-aware at times.

I'm more like I am now than I've ever been.
