9/27: Open Game Thread
Seattle Mariners at Toronto Blue Jays, Sep 27, 2009 10:07 AM PDT
It's always interesting to me to see when certain people just check out from trying to look good.

Per Drayer this morning
The Jays clubhouse got the overhead shot of Ichiro drawing the line in the dirt, and the F/X shot of where the pitch crossed the plate, and noted that they were in the same place.
She said the general consensus over there was “is this guy ever wrong?”
Therefore, my general consensus is that Brian Runge

I can see that it was a call that could go either way, and I know you can't show up an ump (especially a tender flower like Runge)
It just reinforces for me that Ichiro is like Edgar.
If I were an umpire and either of them gave me the “it was a ball” look, I’d go back and check the monitor.
He is a unique and beautiful snowflake!

You might not go and check the monitor
Because you’d be drunk on POWER!

I wouldn't agree so fully if the guy didn't have such a track record for being such a douche nozzle.
Awaiting the day I catch a Russell Branyan foul ball. I will make love to it.

Runge is the 3B umpire today.
Ichiro doesn’t check swing very often, but if I was the catcher I’d be looking over there every time.
Just the person to tell me if I'm remembering this correctly
Didn’t Olerud get ejected for giving the umpire a long hard look? He never said much at the plate, but around ‘02 or so I remember him giving the ump a stare, and holding it for a long time. I guess the ump didn’t feel like blinking first so he tossed him. This entire event could be my imagination blowing minor details out of proportion.
Still looking, but I haven't found that he ever got ejected ...
I’d forgotten Boone’s first career ejection came in ’03 for “equipment violations” — he threw down his bat and helmet after a strikeout in his first at-bat of the game.
I did not know that Piniella had Cuban ancestry and spoke Spanish.
Bottom of this article, also had a mildly interesting quote about Ichiro. NYTimes
Lou does speak Spanish ... dunno what his accent is like, after hearing him pronounce names like Ibanez through the years. ...
I’d always heard he was of Spanish extraction
“Before playing Major League Baseball and posting 11 winning seasons out of 15 as a manager, Piniella grew up in Florida with the cigar industry. His grandfather, a Spanish immigrant, began working for Cuesta-Rey cigars as a tobacco buyer in the 1920s when the company was owned by E. Regensburg & Sons. Piniella’s father was a well-known cigar distributor in Ybor, Florida and West Tampa throughout 50s and 60s”
Heh.
“Piniella’s grandparents emigrated from Spain and Lou spoke only Spanish until he was enrolled in a Catholic school. Schoolmates in his neighborhood were chiefly Spanish or Italian.
In his autobiography, “Sweet Lou,” Piniella recalled that a lot of baseball scouts marked him early as a hot-headed Latino. He came by it naturally. He recalls that his father – an amateur pitcher – one day decked his own catcher on the mound, during a game, in a dispute over pitch selection."
Tallet looks a little better than his Game Day photo
He goes to the Mark Lowe school of shavery.

I think this theory needs to be tested
I expect a paper by Wednesday.

On the pregame show there was discussion that Tallent had moved between the BP & starting and had been experiencing control problems.
Pretty much the kiss of death for a big Mariners offensive day.
By spending minutes on end discussing sideburns
Sims and Blowers are NOT leading credence to the idea that there is still a lot going on this season.
Dave & Rizzs are having hysterics because it was so close to Blow's prediction
almost with 3 balls, and just under the 2nd deck.
Yay LL works on Safari!
Why the hell didn’t I think to try that before? First time Firefox has let me down.
Dammit Ichiro.
Way to screw up again. I wanted back to back to back to back HR.
Josh Wilson fucked that up, not Ichiro

I might be wrong,
but I believe Bill Hall is the worst human being to have ever lived.

So is RRS just lucky today or is there some repeatable skill that's keeping the ball in the park despite the 2-13 GB-FB ratio?
There's only actually one "last place you want to skimp"
and I’m not sure your car engine is that place.
I was thinking your own body
but that’s a decent choice too.
That was kind of annoying.

This is about the time when talking about how bad a batter is doing likely bites you in the backside.
Wilson is too obvious of a choice
I don’t think they’ll put him out there
Josh Wilson is bad.
I would like to see Hannahan tried at SS for the rest of the season
The Falcons just punted from the New England 38.

Maybe their kicker doesnt have a dick.

It’s the first place I heard it anyway.

People didn't believe back in April
when I said Mike Sweeney would be a valuable part of this team and was a way better choice than Chris Shelton.
I believe it's a bannable offense to follow through with your request.

I am not, but regardless of that
I would still be excited for the season to begin and have mentioned that I am excited several times on this very web log
I'll be mildly upset with Wak if we now lose this game.

Really?
Hmm. Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter
Anyone know what Batista's average time between pitches is?
I’d wager it’s at least 30 seconds per pitch.
