9/25: Open Game Thread

As a pitcher, Roy Halladay has a lot of strengths. Intimidation is not one of them.

It's possible he's one of those tough guys with the slightly subtle cues you have to look for.
Knotted cartilage on the ears is always an important tell, or the little scars around the eyelids and the cheekbones, especially on the left side of their head. Maybe it’s the angle, but his ear on that side might be a little out of shape.
Isn't it great
that the statement “this season is almost over” doesn’t come paired with a sense of relief this year?

I very much like the pullover v-neck style jersey, but the color is an absolute nightmare.

Jose Lopez is going to end the year with at least 25 HR and 40 doubles.
And still be a below average hitter.

We should trade for Ryan Doumit so when he screws up or hits into a double play with the bases loaded or something we can say "God Doumit!" Also we need a catcher.
I doubt it's within his control.

My favorite is the commercial that focuses on the line "gaze in wide wonder"

No, I mean, they look like team approved pajamas.
I have Mariner pajamas that look more professional than these uniforms.
Really?
I mean the pajamas, not the professional part.
Are they flannel?

You have a valid point
I just want flannel Mariner PJs.

As a Jays fan
All I remember about that trade is Cruz being hyped as the next Griffey, and then…. not really living up to that. Still a great trade.
I don't remember him being hyped as the next Griffey
but he was supposed to be the answer to the M’s revolving door in LF for years. I think that was the first time I got sad about a player being traded.
[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]
Googling
“Jose Cruz” “next Ken Griffey” gives me 140 results, so I’m not imagining it. Although an article from Seattle in 1997 specifically says that the M’s should trade Cruz (For Ricky Bottalico, no less) because Cruz is not the next Griffey.
Isn't it?
If a newspaper reporter has to argue against a comparison, it means that the comparison is held by some people.
Some people are of the opinion that the world will end on December 21, 2012
some people think that David Eckstein is a good baseball player
some people think that 2 + 2 = 5
some people think that no person has ever walked on the moon
are you really going to base your argument off of what “some people” think?
by seattlebruin on Sep 25, 2009 5:16 PM PDT up reply actions
Yes
because that’s all I ever said. Cruz was hyped as the next Griffey. I didn’t say that was accurate or anything, just that the position existed.
What do want?
That’s not snark, I’m baffled, really.
Your claim is that the Jose Cruz trade was a great trade because Cruz was hyped to be "the next Griffey" by "some people"
our point is that the opinion of “some people” is stupid unless they are credible. Searching random newspaper stories for proof that Cruz was hyped is not going to make us believe that he was in fact “the next Griffey.”

Ah, that's it
see, I thought the Cruz trade being great for Toronto was self-evident. 5 1/2 years of Cruz for Spoljaric and Timlin is a great trade, no questions asked.
As for the hype, all I said is I remember it, and google says other people remember the same thing. I’m not saying that credible sources were saying it, just that the idea was out there.
Well, that's your point. Which is a good one as well.
My point was that the assertion was made but never backed up with actual examples of Jose Cruz Jr. being compared to Griffey.
If you want to dig through
a google search, go ahead, you’ll find a couple news stories and a bunch of message board snark. The Toronto Star doesn’t have searchable archives going back to 1997, so it’s impossible to find the article that I vaguely remember reading twelve years ago.
It is
If you’re working with a search engine.

I liked Churchill's idea of a couple of incentive-laden contracts to the broken but talented group.
I think we’re close to a .500 win team next season if GMZ spends his money well. If we can add a couple of those types and get 50 starts between them, I think we increase our playoff chances by like double.
The 2010 Mariners have an outside chance at competing next year, but are focused on 2011 on.
This means that one-year deals are pretty ideal, and high risk high reward guys give us a better chance at making the post-season than lower risk talents at similar prices.
I think the idea is that it makes more sense for the Mariners because of the focus on 2011
if they do well in 2010 it is a pleasant bonus, but since the roster is constructed to be significantly better in 2011 than 2010, 2010 is no big loss if a one-year risk/reward signing backfires.
By 2011, the rotation would set so that a risk-reward type signing would be unnecessary
by seattlebruin on Sep 25, 2009 5:39 PM PDT up reply actions
If I thought we were a true-talent 88-win team going into next year, I would suggest lower-risk players.
But I think we’re a lot closer to .500, in which case I believe our best shot at making the playoffs is hoping that the high-risk guys hit.
Yeah well you see, there's a relationship between talent, injury risk, and price.
And I don’t think with our budget and current talent, we don’t have the money to get the talent we need to have a good shot at the playoffs without going for players that have an injury-risk factor.
Well unless you have a better idea than Dave Cameron of where we stand for 2010, I'm afraid I'll have to disagree.
Our 2009 roster WAR looked like shit too
You’re basically completely discounting the possibility of meaningful roster additions
Ok then let's just stop talking about next year and assume GMZ will trade Aardsma and Lowe for 5-win players!
Because apparently you don't like to think about next year's team in terms of reasonable acquisitions.
Just because GMZ pulled a miracle trade for Gutierrez doesn’t mean we can find similar value from the pieces we have now.
If we can trade an overvalued player for a massively undervalued player every offseason...
We will soon win the AL West nearly every season, but I just can’t assume that GMZ is that good yet.
It happens every offseason
I see no reason to assume that we can’t make a move (cough Lopez cough) that will significantly aid this this team
My problem is assuming we can trade a 2-win player for a 4-win player.
Or something along those lines.
I’m not assuming we can’t, but assuming we can and will is a little too optimistic for my liking.
He's a typing dog, he's probably a fucking genius if he figured out how to type without opposable thumbs

You just said if he figured out how to type without opposable thumbs
I don’t think that would be too hard
There are many smart GMs.
GMZ made a couple of great choices, but I don’t think we can think of it as something we can expect GMZ to do every season.
So how do you want to talk about next year’s roster?
“Let’s sign a couple of 4-win players to $8 mil/year deals.”
That’s not a realistic way to get a feel on where we’ll be next season.
We could sign Nick Johnson.
I heard he’ll easily be a 4-win improvement next year
by Matthew on Sep 25, 2009 6:07 PM PDT up reply actions 2 recs
Well from a quick glance, I think some the most undervalued FAs out there might be...
O-Hud (he’s type-A so we probably wouldn’t want to give up a 1st round pick for him)
Marlon Byrd (but I don’t think we have a spot for him)
Geoff Jenkins (as a platoon DH bat or something, might be cheap but not that valuable)
Brad Penny
Well, I think the playoffs are a long-shot, yeah.
We’re probably 8/1 against to win the AL West at this point.
I wonder if there are just words floating around in your head that are made up of all the letters you leave out of words now
I imagine it being like chemistry but with letters instead of elementary particles
by seattlebruin on Sep 25, 2009 5:41 PM PDT up reply actions
I don't think you should appluad this as an original idea, Matthew
the poster clearly stated that the idea is borrowed from Jason Churchill of prospectinsider.com and thus is by definition, not an original idea.
I would think someone with an Ivy League education would understand that.
by seattlebruin on Sep 25, 2009 5:34 PM PDT up reply actions
I disagree
I think Churchill is a hack and his ideas are rarely original and often are retarded

I don't see Felix being traded before the start of the season.
He may be traded next year, but I think it will be mid-season when teams are more willing to actually pay what he’s worth.
You forgot Silva.
It is really hard to tell because there could be a signing and/or some trades. But right now I would put Felix and RRS on next years rotation.
Next year's rotation
Mariners pitcher #1
Mariners pitcher #2
Mariners pitcher #3
Carlos Silva
Mariners pitcher #4
