We need, need, NEED

To take this guy to the World Series. He freaking deserves it.

Doesn't Griffey deserve it, too

Griffey and Ernie Banks can be the poster children of never been to the World Series.

I feel like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football. Ugh

It doesn't matter who the player is

if they have a stellar career, why does it matter if they go to/win the World Series or not? The fact that Junior has never been doesn’t diminish what he has accomplished in the slightest.

I can see how it might be difficult for a player to have a tremendous career and never win a World Series.

It is the ultimate goal, after all, and while it shouldn’t change our evaluation of their careers I can definitely understand how not ever winning one might be tough.

This is up there with the Felix slam. Incredible.

I was at Shea for the Felix-Slam!
Personal M's record: 5-4.

I watched the replay last night 10+ times.

I just kept rewinding, rewinding, rewinding. And then I listened to Niehaus’s radio call 20+ times (AMAZING CALL).

It was almost a perfect storm of an event. I say ‘almost’ because this was not a playoff game nor did it have playoff implications for the Mariners. However, it was against the Yankees in late September. Every third person in the stadium was a Yankee fan. There were a ton of cheers when Hannahan and Carp struck out. Then Mike Sweeney kept the game alive with the long double.

But here is where it really came together. The crowd is pumped because the tying run is on second base and Ichiro is coming up— the night after he hit a walk-off single. On the first, which is key, the crowd is standing on their feet cheering loud to get into Mo’s head. And when that ball came off the bat EVERYONE knew it was gone. Immediately, 20,000 people turned to the Yankee fan sitting next to them and went nuts. It was important this happened on the first pitch because the crowd progressively gets less boastful as an at-bat continues. Ichiro took every ounce of energy in the stadium and put it in that one swing.

Just listening to the crowd’s reaction, both on TV and radio, is simply amazing. It sounds like a sellout during the playoffs at the Kingdome. Griffey may have been the only other person to induce that kind of moment. I love you, Ichiro. And thank you Felix for setting that moment up by pitching nine incredible innings.

I have an mp3 recording of Dave Niehaus.

I want to publish it for everyone. If someone has a site I can stream it from, I will upload it.

Dave's call...

Dave’s call was definitely one for the ages. FLY, FLY, FLY AWAY!
You could tell it was out of the park by the absence of any doubt in his voice.

Also, kudos to someone I’m not that big a fan of normally, New York Vinnie. His presentation on the post-game was spot-on. In case you missed it, he replayed Dave’s call numerous times in a row and then called-out the stay at home fans (of which I was one) for the fact that only 28k fans were at the park on a perfect NW evening for a Yankees game. Of course there’s a recession, but it needed to be said.
Every time Ichiro does something that reminds us of his awesomeness, perhaps we should spare a thought for Bill Bavasi. For inking Ichiro to his extension, we owe him.

Well I'm confused
The "mistake’’ was a cutter Rivera had hoped to bury deep inside. He didn’t get it in nearly enough.

Saving face?

“Whoops, that’s not where I wanted it. Yea, that’s the ticket. I don’t blow saves often you know.”

I am so, so glad I took my kid to this game.

While we were yelling and jumping and high-fiving, and I was screaming my head off like a fool, I made sure to take a breath to get to his eye level and say “son, THIS is why you stay for the whole game”. Then he high-fived me again and more exuberance ensued.

And then hearing Dave’s call on the radio like a dozen times on the drive home was just icing on the cake.

Thank you so much for teaching that virtue to your child.

As I am always grateful my father impressed it into me. And as such, the greatest game I ever saw was a walk-off grand slam from Adam Dunn.
