2009 bullpen appreciation thread

MSB suggested this in this thread, I'm just following through. I was hoping to get more footage last night, but the pre-game stuff was actually pretty tame for whatever reason. I'm planning on going to all the White Sox series this week, and will be at the Yankees game on Sunday (sort of a last ditch effort to enjoy what is left of my summer before I start school next Monday), so hopefully I can get some more shots. If you have video, photos, or just want to give the boys in the back a little love, here's the place to do it (with thanks in advance to the LL guys for putting up with my irrational affection for relief pitchers).

and I blame the poor pitching that followed on that very thing.

I wish you had your helmets still...

Lowe has easily been my favorite reliever on the M’s. He’s goofy and funny and provides some worry free innings.

You got slurved!

I wonder if higher level relievers take more time to mature?

Thornton sucked but now he’s good.
Putz was also no special stuff (yes, I know he learned the splitter from Eddie but anyway) but then he was great (and became not so good now).
Lowe seems to have settled down and as you said, recently he’s been more stress free.

Maybe Kelley will be better next year. (Of course in his case it was an injury which derailed him.)

It is often the "getting better" that makes them higher level, though.

Usually pitchers who pitch really well are good pitchers.

As a more serious answer, relievers are also prone to random fluctuations. When you pitch so infrequently, if you are destroyed in like… 3 or 4 games, all of your numbers for the year suffer. If you were a good pitcher to begin with, chances are the next year your numbers will be just fine.

...and now I'm here

You’re right, I wasn’t thinking too straight. Brain cells in a slump..

Yeppers

I had a CF bleacher seat, but wandered around most of the game, watched the last few innings from one of the seats above the normal seats in RF/CF.

I think we may have been sitting directly above you

I heard someone yell “Come on, Hyphen!”, and looked down, and there was a guy who looked a little like your avatar with a beer, and a baseball hat on . I was in the corner, front row section 195.

Watching

My favorite player slap one of my least favorite this evening pretty much made the game for me.

Heh.

I find it interesting that Silva has immediately joined in the Bullpen hijinks, but Batista still walks out there right before the top of the 1st.

Yeah

Not sure what that’s all about. I don’t think I’ve seen Batista in the huddle once.

It is sort of a bow/slap blessing.

For a while it looked like they were introducing Silva to the rest of the bullpen.

by msb on Sep 17, 2009 10:16 AM PDT up reply actions

Hmm.

In the rest of the footage it looks like those who failed the night before had to get into the middle of the circle.. perhaps for a ritual cleansing.

by msb on Sep 17, 2009 10:21 AM PDT up reply actions

But Lowe always has to get in the circle....

I’m thinking perhaps we’re overanalyzing; I don’t think they know what they’re doing, either.

I love the Mariners bullpen.

They remind me that my heart still works.

What are they doing? Was that today?

Yup.

Apparently, sitting on each other to will the game forward.

It didn’t work— dunno if they kept it up as the bullpen was decimated.
