The MLB responds to the helmet petition
I know some folks here signed it, so I just wanted to put this here, for those of you who aren't into my particular style of blogging. The MLB sent me a letter responding to our petition a few weeks ago. In the end, we achieved 394 signatures. These were printed out and copies sent to about 10 MLB officials, including two copies to Bud Selig's two office addresses in New York and Wisconsin (we found these online), along with a letter. Another copy was hand-delivered to the bullpen during an Oakland A's game a few weeks ago.
In any event, here is the full text of the letter I received:
Thank you for your August 20, 2009 letter regarding the gladiator helmets that the Mariners’ relief pitchers had on display in the team’s bullpen earlier this season. Major League Baseball appreciates the concern and passion that you and the hundreds offans who signed your petition have shown regarding this issue. That being said, Major League Baseball does not believe that the helmets belong either on the field of play or in any team areas such as the dugout or bullpen during the course of the game. While these helmets may be a symbolic motivator for the Mariners’ players, they serve no baseball-related purpose or function. We have addressed this issue with the Mariners and the Major League Baseball Players Association and made it clear that the gladiator helmets are welcome in the Mariners clubhouse, both at home and on the road, which should allow the helmets to serve their motivational purposes.
Sincerely,
Jimmie Lee Solomon
So, much like the Spartans, we got our asses handed to us, but still, I'd like to thank anyone here who signed it for your support, even if I pretty much knew this was the response we were going to get before we sent it. Wish we could have done more, but we are small, and they are big, and that's just the way things are.

That's just so ridiculous.
The gladiator helmets did literally nothing to detract from the game. I thought the NFL was the No-Fun-League…

No doubt
I did find out however that there are two girls who go to every game (or at least, quite a few of them), and hold the helmets on the fence right next to the bullpen. I can appreciate their dedication and their bank accounts (God knows I can’t afford to go to that many games), and even though it’s not the same, at least it’s something.

Yeah
They’re the two metal helmets, the first ones they had.

Someone at the stadium attached a wooden shelf for them

Are you serious?
I’ll have to check it out tomorrow. I saw the girls had some sort of rack that they were using, like a part of a clothing rack or something, but didn’t see a shelf. I get the impression that the handlers that hang out around the pen think the whole thing is stupid, too; they actively cooperate with the two girls to make sure that nobody bothers them (neither of them seem to drink, and they’re in prime drunk territory down there), and make sure they get the standing spot next to the pen gate. Pretty cool.

It *looked* like an attached shelf from a distance
I was up above, with the camera— let me know what it looks like

Oh, I will!
I’ve got a camera, and a mission to take pictures of Snell’s foot today.

It's kind of a wooden shelf thinger with a metal rack
But it’s not permanent. I was irresponsible last night and drank pretty much the entirety of the Bullpen Pub, so my photos came out absolute shite. :/

The helmets were great.
For anyone interested in the pregame bullpen ritual, this video I filmed yesterday is a must-see. Trust me, these guys are creative enough to find the next big thing.

Correct me if I'm wrong
but I didn’t see Batista in there. I have been away from games for a few days. Did I miss something?
by HitKing69 on Sep 14, 2009 6:29 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Apparently he had "family issues" that caused him to miss the Texas series.
by naviomelo on Sep 14, 2009 6:32 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
You couldn't hear it from that distance
But there is also singing as part of the huddle. Batista has not been present for a few of these that I’ve noticed; at least two I’ve either taken photos of, he simply hasn’t been in the pen. Not sure why.

I saw them do something like this
at a home game against the Athletics, except instead of doing the “hokie-pokie”, Mark Lowe got in the center of the circle and then just tipped to one side, and then the guys pushed him over to the other side, and they just tipped him all around the circle for a good 30 seconds.
What a bunch of kids. I love how they make the rookies wear the Dora the Explorer backpacks.

Yeah
That is another one of the things, rather reminiscent of one of those “trust exercises”. They’re freaks, gotta love ’em.

After finally being able to watch the whole thing
I wonder if Luke French thinks they’re all crazy. I mean, he wasn’t here for the helmet thing, and he was a starter up until recently.
I’m going to see if I can’t get some more over the next few days, I think aspects of it might be different every time.

Well, we tried.
This is really stupid in my opinion. This is the kind of thing baseball could use a little more of, not less.

It's a shame
that we can’t kick Mr. “Jimmie Lee Solomon” and his colleagues into a pit. Preferably one filled with rabid dogs.

I was going to start one, but can’t figure out how to put photos up without having them hosted somewhere. I’m still not 100% on all the workings of SBN.

Thank you for your August 20, 2029 letter regarding the retarded alien biking helmets that the Mariners’ batters are forced against their will to wear every day. Major League Baseball appreciates the concern and passion that you and the hundreds of fans who signed your petition have shown regarding this issue. That being said, Major League Baseball believes that these ridiculous helmets belong both on the field of play and in any team areas such as the dugout or bullpen during the course of the game, and it’s a great way to stay in shape. While these helmets may be a symbolic motivator for the watching college football instead, they serve ample baseball-related purpose or function, and they’re a great way to stay in shape. We have addressed this issue with the Mariners and the Major League Baseball Players Association and made it clear that these helmets are mandatory in the Mariners clubhouse, both at home and on the road, which will allow the helmets to serve their functional purposes, and it’s a great way to stay in shape.
Sincerely,
Jimmie Lee Solomon II
