Riggleman is surprisingly not bad as manager.

Hasn’t done anything stupid, has run out good lineups, and the players are speaking highly of him. He just might get a shot to stick around next year, which is all he’s ever wanted.

In particular, he’s apparently done the same thing in Washington as he did in Seattle, which is sort out a toxic-to-indifferent clubhouse and whip folks into shape.

We have a better chance at making the WC, and Texas is still ahead of us in that department. I’ve already conceded the division to LAA.

We want the Angels to win.

I can see both sides.

On the one hand, you may be correct that our best shot now is at the WC, but it’s early enough in the second half of the season that a few key Angels losses could expose some cracks. Even the best teams slump.

Texas winning today is beneficial to the playoff race.

The best they can do in the WC today is tie Boston. Boston and the Rays are better teams.
They also slow down the Angels by winning.

What is amazing is that this roster is no longer a Bavasi roster.

Silva and Bedard are about the only two players left. Yeah, Beltre is in there, but that was a good signing and one even Jack Z would have made.

Holy shit, you're right.

It didn’t even occur to me. But you’re right — nearly complete turnover. Ichiro, Beltre, Silva, Bedard, Loafie and RRS are the only major pieces of last year’s MLB team left. Even Joh’s nothing more than a once-a-week backup now.

Jigsaw falling into place

by esoteric on Aug 9, 2009 4:03 PM PDT up reply actions

I am already over the bitterness.

• Guti makes up for Adam Jones.
• Tillman is the bigger loss and I am not worried because we have plenty of arms in the system and a defense to make any pitcher look good (e.g. Washburn).
• Choo is replaced by Saunders and Ackley.
• Cabrera… well, Jack Z has already patched the hole and will eventually find a better long-term fix.

Sore spots: Silva and Bedard; only because we have them here as reminders. Bedard is gone after this season and Silva may never pitch again for the Mariners. Out of sight, out of mind.

by Wilder. on Aug 9, 2009 3:34 PM PDT up reply actions

That's an interesting way to think of it.

Had Bavasi “won” the Bedard trade (even superficially, by fielding a contender last year) he might have been able to hold onto his job, and continue screwing the pooch in even worse ways (just imagine how he would have filled in our gaps in CF and 1B!). So the apocalypse of Jones/Tillman/Sherrill might just have been necessary to ensure Bavasi’s exeunt.

Jigsaw falling into place

by esoteric on Aug 9, 2009 3:40 PM PDT up reply actions

It makes a perverted sort of sense if you tilt your head and squint.

In a world where Bedard is healthy and pitches well, and the M’s make a semi-respectable run, Bavasi probably still has his job for at least another year. And we can only imagine the sort of damage he would’ve wrought with one more year. Can you say “Washburn extension?”

Although I was at Felix’s great game vs. the White Sox (second game of a double-header) this year. I was the guy who was right by the Sox dugout and kept screaming “HE ONLY THROWS FASTBALLS!” at the White Sox players. Best part was that Felix struck a bunch of them out on curves.

My dad is an enormous Yankees fan (and is from NY so it's not obnoxious)

And this is the first season where I’ve been able to join him in wishing well towards them. Not even just because it aids our longshot attempt to win a playoff berth, but because you just have to prefer a team that works to keep the New Evil Empire out of the playoffs, even if it’s in a “I’ll take Stalin’s Russia over Hitler’s Germany in WW2” sort of way.

by esoteric on Aug 9, 2009 4:02 PM PDT up reply actions

The Stalin to Hitler analogy works pretty well here.

But there is no doubt the Yankees bought themselves a playoff birth this offseason after getting in third last year. Its just that they have gotten so far ahead of their division that it doesn’t affect the Mariners anymore. Not until next weekend at least.

Click for continuing evidence of Mike Sweeney's insufferable wonderfulness and likability...

…here

Some of you saw Don Wakamatsu say something to Ryan Rowland-Smith as he left the mound in the seventh inning. Wakamatsu was telling him that Mike Sweeney had lobbied on his behalf to have the manager let him go past the 100-pitch mark for the first time this season.

Rowland-Smith had been increasingly telling teammates of his desire to surpass 100, which he did today at 109.

Sweeney told me he went to Wakamatsu pre-game and offered him $100 if he’d let his pitcher throw 100 or more pitches. Rowland-Smith, who tied a career-high with six strikeouts, made it easy for Wakamatsu to do that without being paid.

Still, Sweeney showed up at his office post-game.

“I flipped him a Benjamin,’’ Sweeney said.

Who wants the bet the M’s find a way to bring him back next season, or give him a coaching position, or something?

Jigsaw falling into place

by esoteric on Aug 9, 2009 7:28 PM PDT reply actions

I WANT HIM AS A COACH.

In whatever capacity. I love him, but let’s face it – we have a youth movement going on here. Let’s keep him in the clubhouse for morale and personal guidance.

by kevin_ess on Aug 9, 2009 7:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Can we just create a "Awesomeness Coach" position?

I’d even be fine with cutting into the FA budget to do this.

by SethGrandpa on Aug 9, 2009 7:47 PM PDT up reply actions

As far as I know,

you can create a position named, “Awesome Rainbow Unicorn Coach Who Makes Delicious Burgers” in the MLB. I think teams have guidance coaches and such. Heck, make him team Pastor, or some shit.

Illegible

by kevin_ess on Aug 9, 2009 7:49 PM PDT up reply actions

I think a coaching position might defeat the purpose. Coaches are like bosses.

How about instead, he is hired as a Spanish/English interpreter? Then, he’s just one of the guys in the dugout. He can pick up next year where he left off this year. It’s not even a “made-up” coach position.

by Sinking Away on Aug 9, 2009 9:50 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't see why they can't hire him as a motivational coach

And I’m serious. Everyone would get a great laugh out of it, Sweeney gets to continue being Sweeney.

I mentioned earlier in this thread that the Victor Martinez trade came at a high price by trading Masterson away.

Is it irony when Martinez ends up hitting the go-ahead two-run home run and then Bard coughs it up in the 8th (the spot Masterson would’ve been pitching)?

by Wilder. on Aug 9, 2009 7:56 PM PDT up reply actions

According to Baseball-Referenece,

Masterson was being used in long relief. And it does appear Bard had been the 8th inning guy before the trade.

I find it inconceivable that, for the past 13 years, all he has done is go out there and throw the same pitch, every time.

And his effectiveness hasn’t flagged one bit. You keep waiting for the inevitable collapse, sometimes he starts the season off a little rocky and everyone holds their breath, and then he rattles off five months of flawless relief.

I also really like the fact that Rivera isn’t one of those pussy “one inning only” guys. He takes the ball in 8th all the time, with little if any drop-off in skill.

He's 101 out of his last 105 save opportunities.

Let’s be honest and just admit that he’s made of liquid metal.

He has to be reeeeeaaallly good to get away with it.

Mere Papelbonesque talent will not do. You need someone like Mo or Gagne during his record-setting run.

It would also be perfect for Rivera because he usually looks so implacable and stoic on the mound. You almost can believe that he’s a robot underneath that skin.

It say something to Rivera's career that that game is known for Gonzo's hit, not Rivera blowing the save in one of the biggest games of all time.

To me what always sticks out is a guy nicknamed “Wild Thing” living up to his epithet. Oddly enough, even though I know “Joe Carter” in my brain too, I don’t associate it with Williams. They’re like separate incidents in my head.

This would require the Angels to suddenly invert their recent record and start finding hilariously unlikely ways to lose.

In other words, it would be even MORE entertaining than a mere Mariners surge.

Make it so.

Basically what we did in 2002?

With that awesome 6 game losing streak?
Lets find some 2002 parallels!
2002 Mariners = 2009 Angels – COLLAPSE!
2002 Angels = 2009 Mariners – World Series!
2002 Athletics = 2009 Rangers – Playoffs, nobody cares about you!
2002 was so terrible for me. I had just moved down to the Bay Area DURING that 20 game win streak and everyone knew I was a Mariners fan. Go me! At least we all suffer together.
