I wore my Felix jersey out tonight.

I get a lot more compliments on and Arsenal jersey than an M’s jersey. National pastime my ass

I wouldn't think that it'd be too difficult to get on a plane at SeaTac and fly to New York.

It’s a bit unusual for someone to play for their new team on the same day that they’re acquired, yes, but certainly not strange.

The MLB Network mentioned the other night how 1 player has gotten a hit with 2 different teams in 2 different cities in the same day.

He got traded after a day game and made it to the new team for a night game. I can’t remember any of the specifics unfortunately but it was one of the cooler things I heard this week.

Okay, just one more from MarinersFan4Life.

Dude is clearly 100% not-ironic.

yeah the cat is back when the game is over…i dont care if felix goes 9 innings and no hits the rays the rest of the way but we lose….the fact of the matter is, he did not pitch up to the occasion, and when the game was on the line he has been pathetic, lets just hope our team can come back and win for him….i can count COUNTLESS AMOUNTS OF TIMES this year when he has gotten a lead and blown it the next inning, or the team has tied it and the next inning he gives it up

The Mariners have no heart and have given up because they lost the Veteran Presence of Washburn and it signalled that Management gave up on them.

and of course there are the usual astonishing remarks from MarinerFan4Life, who almost seems like a cunning parody :

felix is not an ace, maybe under your definition of ace, he is one, but under mine, he isnt, not enough complete games, has to many stretches where he pitches horrible, leads the league in wild pitches, gives up leads way to much

by BrianL on Aug 7, 2009 8:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Wait, doesn't a void suck everything into it?

Wouldn’t a void be a good thing in defense? At least that’s how I read it. Rose-colored glasses and all.

by Robert Lintott on Aug 7, 2009 8:22 PM PDT up reply actions

But wouldn't space be a void?

And if you’re in space and your spaceship gets a hole in it, you’d be sucked into the void (pressure differences and all).

But, I think we can agree that despite the technicalities of it, void was a poor choice of words

Lordy. There could be an entire thread.

well i am a huge baseball card collector, and i know certain prospects that have alot of hype for alot more money and dellin betances form the yankees is a highly regarded prospect, he is in Single A and is 2-5 with a 5.48 ERA and has 44 strike outs in 44 innings, so he is still a ways away, but he is also only 21 years old

it seems like the yankees really want washburn, so how about this trade, washburn for austin jackson and ian kennedy, or washburn for phil hughes, or washburn for my local highscool teamate colin curtis and ian kennedy

and for all of those saying felix is our ace, i beg to differ, felix has given up 5 runs or more 5 different times, where washburn has given up 5 runs or more 2 different times, never giving up more then 6 runs, and felix has topped out at given up 7 runs. Plus washburn has given up 4 runs twice, and the rest of his starts have been LESS THEN 3 RUNS, so he is not more dominating then felix, but washburn has definately been the ace of the staff this year

Collin Cowheard, from espn radio, was talking about the fans in philly that killed someone, and was mentioning that people in Philadelphia, only 25 percent of them have a college degree of some sorts, and people without college degrees care more about there teams and invest way more time to there teams then people with college degrees and money, because those people dont need to invest that much time to be happy, and you know what, I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH THAT, and i dont have a college degree, and i get really hurt when the mariners lose, it breaks my heart, and when he mentioned this, it really got me thinking about how i view my team

July 28, 2009 at 3:35 PM

Yep, go ahead, give me the thumbs down for being truthful. Everyone here is treating Jack like he is the best GM on the planet, because he made one good move in getting Gutierrez. Sure, Branyan and Aardsma were great moves, but the thing is, that is much more luck then Jack Z spotting talent. The Mariners had no one to fill in those roles, so they offered these veterans, who have never had full playing time, a chance to play, and that is only because we had no one else to give the spot to. So you cant really give Jack full credit for that, it was pure luck

I have been saying get Josh Willingham and Ty Wiggington for quite some time, about 3 to 4 weeks ago I was saying this, and Willingham is only making 2.5 million and under club control for 2 more years, I BLAME JACK Z FOR NOT MAKING A MOVE BEFORE IT WAS TO LATE.

HAD HE MADE THE MOVES WHEN WE WERE 2 TO 3 GAMES OUT, AND GOTTEN 2 BATS LIKE THE ONES I MENTIONED AND POSSIBLY SOMEONE LIKE IAN SNELL, THIS TEAM MAY BE AHEAD IN THE DIVISION, BUT NOOOOOOO JACK Z WOULD RATHER WAIT…..

I WANT EVERYONE HERE TO UNDERSTAND THAT TEAM HAS BEEN IN TROUBLE SINCE THE PAT GILLICK DAYS, WHEN HE PAWNED OFF ALL OF OUR YOUNG PLAYERS AT TRADE DEADLINES, AND SPENT TONS OF MONEY ON FREE AGENTS, BAVASI CAME INTO A BROKEN SYSTEM, AND NEVER HELPED IT, BUT THIS HAS BEEN BAD SINCE GILLICK WAS RUNNING THIS TEAM.

If Ichiro steals second, branyan moves him to third on a ground ball and a sac fly or another ground ball can win it

You’ve got an opportunity to manufacture a run and win a game

I think Wak sits on his hands too much regarding the offense.

I'm not afraid to call out the manager for not being aggressive

by frelled on Aug 7, 2009 11:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Ichiro is smart enough to make the call to go in motion for himself.

Wak is smart enough to recognize that Ichiro knows what the fuck he’s doing.

by BrianL on Aug 7, 2009 11:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Look, I think you probably mean well, but you're in a game thread, where Game Thread Emotion (amnesty for outrageous bursts of emtion) is permitteed,

and you’re pushing people’s buttons here by criticizing Wak repeatedly without giving any supporting evidence why he should do what you say he should do. It’s a recipe for a pile on.

by Decatur on Aug 7, 2009 11:12 PM PDT up reply actions

I'll continue to criticize Wak for not producing more runs

I don’t like seeing the Mariners lose anymore than you guys do. If Lopez boots a groundball, I’ll call him on it. If Felix has a bad game, I’ll say he pitched poorly. If Wak doesn’t take advantage of a situation late in a game that can possibly lead to the winning run scoring, I’ll call him on it, too.

by frelled on Aug 7, 2009 11:15 PM PDT up reply actions

I was calling for an all out steal of second while branyan was at the plate

no outs… Wak decided to sit and let the inning develop like he does a lot… and it resulted in no runs that inning.

by frelled on Aug 7, 2009 11:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Ichiro is smart and won't steal if the odds are stacked against success.

Just about every manager that’s ever managed Ichiro has handled him in the same way. He’s got the green light to go at his discrection.

by BrianL on Aug 7, 2009 11:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Take a look at this

And remember that Ichiro, while picking and choosing his spots to run, only steals successfully in about 80% of his attempts. It’s not a necessary risk.

by Decatur on Aug 7, 2009 11:22 PM PDT up reply actions

This isn't exactly the situation though

THT did an article a while back about the chance of one run scoring with different outs and men on base since additional runs aren’t an issue. IIRC it changes the values a little from expected runs. A the more you know thing

Don't believe the lies Bill!!!! look at the sparkly ERA!!! Sparkly, Sparkly!!! - McCovey Chronicles

by Trenchtown on Aug 8, 2009 12:00 AM PDT up reply actions

Also, remember Branyan has some power.

Ichiro might well score from 1st on many Branyan hits, so the steal could be considered risk with very little reward.

What're ya gonna do with those pies, boys?

And I thought I was taking my first couple months here hard.

As difficult as I see acceptance on this board, I’m not going to give up. Because I trust that LL knows a shit-ton more than I do, and I want to broaden my horizons on the sport. I still don’t understand many of these stats and the ways of baseball, so I’m going to keep trying. Even if I still come off like an idiot for awhile.

This is absolutely the attitude I think every poster here, new and old, should have.

Realize that here you can always learn something new. You will only be shunned if you act like a know-it-all or say something along the lines of “new stats are crap”. LL is a good place to constantly be learning, even if you think you know everything there is to know…as long as posters keep an open mind to new things, and the fact that advanced analysis is constantly evolving an changing, it shouldn’t be too hard to at least not be a hated member of the community.

Perhaps people should prove they are qualified to post, before propogating a bunch of inferior posts

I realize anyone can create a post and some people have lots of posts. But there are better posts than others, and the bad ones should be weeded out or eliminated. Before they go on to spawn entire sub-threads of degenerate posts, pretty soon there are just large populations of inferior and unfit posts hanging around, being a drain on higher quality posts that actually contribute something to the greater good.

by Kermit. on Aug 8, 2009 1:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Eh

I think it’s natural that these sorts of things will happen on blogs. It’s impossible to “weed out” the bad posts/posters, especially in a game thread and, as has been stated countless times here, a lot of people who appeared to be idiots (or were idiots) at the beginning have gone on to be valued posters.

I do think the initial brutality towards uninformed posts is good, but I don’t think we needed to spend quite so much energy on it. It ends up wasting a lot of time and space and distracting from the rest of the thread. Say your “Fuck you, you’re wrong” and go on your merry way.

FUCK THE ANGELS!

by Fuckmikereilly on Aug 8, 2009 1:28 PM PDT up reply actions

While your statements are entirely reasonable

I’m not quite convinced that perhaps some standards could be created. Perhaps good posts could be examined and measured in some scientific manner for identifiable traits. Often bad posts seem to have protruding characteristics that are common among bad posts, if these commonalities are properly identified they could be used to create standards that the group could use to attain the levels of desired perfection and flawlessness that is shared by all superior posts.
