Did Boston want King Felix?
MODERATORS' NOTE: PLEASE LINK TO SOURCE MATERIAL. THIS WAS FIRST WRITTEN BY GEOFF BAKER HERE
I was just on Faketeams, the sbnation fantasy sports blog, and it was reported that Boston offered any 5 of these 8 prospects for Felix.
RHP Clay Buchholz
RHP Daniel Bard
RHP Justin Masterson
LHP Nick Hagadone
RHP Michael Bowden
LHP Felix Doubront
OF Josh Reddick
SS Yamaico Navarro
Obviously we turned it down, but Boston offering that is pretty impressive, especially since I thought they were saying that Clay Buchholz and Daniel Bard were "untouchable." If this report is true, should we have made this trade?

I figured it was close enough to rosterbating
and I know that those type of fanposts are frowned upon, so I rolled it into an OFFTOP.

Would you turn into Gollum?
We wants it, we needs it. Must have the Felix. They stole it from us. Sneaky little Red Sox!
Carlos Silvelite
I would let the Phillies pick any five from this list:
Carlos Silva
Miguel Batista
Kenji Johjima
Rob Johnson
Bryan LaHair
Yes, we should've made it
And if we can’t sign him to an extension this winter, we should re-visit these negotiations.
I wonder if Boston will make the same offer though
if they do I would jump all over it if I were Z.
Nice Guys Finish Third - My semantics are a waste of time.
I am skeptical that they even offered this much
but if they did, I imagine their offer would be similar (perhaps a little worse) come December.

can we take one less prospect
and force them to take Silva?

Make him the object of much-deserved ridicule and merciless scorn, of course.

Masterson and Hagadone are gone now, but if Boston wants to
revisit this deal over the winter, I’d ask them to put Lars Anderson on the list and we pick 4 out of the 7. Anderson, Buchholz, Bard, Navarro for Felix sounds about right.
I see little reason not to hang onto him and go balls-out trying to extend him for 5 years/whatever the hell he wants during this off-season.
If he absolutely won’t sign, I can’t see him losing more than a smidgen of trade value if we trade him in April or May 2010.
At that point teams will know he's ready to leave and will try to bid low though
which leaves open the possibility that he could walk for nothing as a FA. Which would be suboptimal, to say the least.

I doubt a few months makes that much of a difference.
He’s not a free agent until after 2011.
Only reason the cost would drop is because they wouldn't be getting him for the '09 stretch drive
But then other teams might get in on the bidding, so maybe this is realistic?

At this point.
I wouldn’t mind trading him for a good haul. We had our chance to sign him to a extension nice and cheap. We probably have one more chance to lock him up long term before his price blows up. Trading Felix is something that definitely has to be considered.
NO NO NO
He’s got to sign a deal.

I can' think about this rationally. Kind of like my hatred for Napoli.

This is the one player on the team I'm irrational about.
Anyone else on the roster is expendable for the right price, but I just can’t handle this.

Exactly, Felix is my emotional link to this team and if he left I don't know what would happen to that link
Think of it like this; Imagine you were born with really shitty kidneys and for your entire life you had to suffer. No sweets, no playgrounds, no summer camp. But eventually you had a brother born with perfectly functioning kidneys. The doctors tell you that if you wait long enough you can have both of his and lead a normal life. So you put up with him being a dumbass and stealing your stuff because one day you know it will be all worth it and you can eat, play and flirt just like all the other kids in the neighborhood.
But then right before you are supposed to get them, the doctors come to you and say that there is a 20% chance that he will die before his kidneys will be ready and so instead they are going to harvest him for all his other organs. All the hope that those kidneys provided you with is gone now. The doctors say that there is a good chance that the other organs will increase your bodily functions to the point where there is a good chance that you could leave a normalish life but what they don’t realize is that the kidneys were more than about body functions, they were about the hope of you having a normal life with your OWN good kidneys. Replacing hope and meaning isn’t worth it if all that you get back are some nifty parts that might make things better. Some things are more important than just the goal.

I would argue that I've lost my emotional link to the team several times
and have somehow prevailed.
They argue that he might die in a car accident because lots of people have died in car accident
So they want to harvest him before his kidneys aren’t working just to get as many good organs as possible.
I...what?
That oddly made sense, in the most abstract way possible.

If we were to have to trade him
I’d want it to be to a NL team. Who’s the NL contender with the most loaded system? SF?
by Manzanillos Cup on Aug 4, 2009 11:18 AM PDT reply actions
SF's system isn't that loaded - it's very top heavy
though if they wanted to trade Lincecum, I think we could work something out

i'd be open to that, so I could watch him pitch.

Matt Wieters and Chris Tillman are both total busts.
Get real, Graham.
But which five would you take?
I say Buchholz, Bowden, and Navarro for sure. After that it gets tougher. Hagadone’s got injury and command problems, Masterson looks to me more like a middle/back of the rotation guy or a set up man (out of the bullpen he could avoid those lefties that give him so much trouble), Doubrant was great the last two years, but his controls been off some this year, Reddick gives us depth where we already have depth, and Bard is a relief pitcher which really limits his value. I guess based on my limited knowledge, I’d go with Doubrant and Bard, but I’m not sure. If they Lars Anderson in place of both of them, I’d be pretty pumped.
Anyways, what do you guys say?
But I haven't heard of any of these people
That means this must be a crappy deal right?
Depends.
If you’re like me and don’t follow baseball much, the only prospect you should know is Mike Wieters, Steven Strasburg, and Dustinian Ackley.

I thought his name was Mitch Wieters.
I was way off.
Awaiting the day I catch a Russell Branyan foul ball. I will make love to it.

I think if the shoe were on the other foot, if Felix had come up through Boston, and Boston wanted our 5 best prospects for Felix, people would be much more against the deal.
It’s just emotions that get in the way of reality. However, I don’t love Boston’s prospects. I’d rather have Tampa Bay involved, get Tim Beckham, Wade Davis, and a few others.

I would be willing to trade anyone on the team, including Ichico and Fernandez.
But the deal would have to be a blockbuster for those two. I’m not an expert or even a very good amatuer in evaluating trades, but I would trust our current GM, with a trade for both of those guys, and I love both of them. He knows them and he knows what he would have to get for them for this to be worth it. I trust him that much. If he could get the pieces we need to win the World Series by trading them, he’s got my backing. I would also hope that they go to teams where they are eventually going to get ring too. They both surely deserve it.
Is that a real thing?
If so, that would be awesome.

Buster Olney just claimed as a fact
that the Red Sox, Padres, and Mariners were talking about a deal that would send Felix to Boston and Adrian Gonzalez to the Mariners. Somehow I have my doubts about that.
