Happiness is ..... Steve Kelley fixing the Mariners
it seems so long since Steve Kelley has given us the benefit of his Baseball Wisdom ...
"The Mariners were one-hit in their 3-0 loss to Kansas City, and as the team enters the final five weeks of this surprise season, it still seems as if the unanswered questions still outweigh the ones that have been answered.
[mass snippage]
And more than anything, the Mariners need to find a Ryan Howard, an Albert Pujols or a Prince Fielder before they can consider themselves legitimate, every-season contenders."
and for extras, some of my favorites -- from Dec of 1994: "Why Should We Build The Mariners A Stardome Without Any Stars?" and the Jan. 2001 entry: "Cold spell leaves M's in a winter of discontent"

Kelley has it wrong again
More than anything else, the Mariners need to find another ace to give the rotation a one-two punch before they can consider themselves legitimate, every-season contenders.
But he did get it right that the bullpen is fixed, Carlos Triunfel is the shortstop of the future, Adam Moore is the everyday catcher in 2010, the Mariners acquired the Royals’ best pitching prospect in Dan Cortes, and the team really needs to pickup a leftfielder this offseason.

Not at all sure about the left fielder
How many outfielders does one team need?
Danny Blanchflower Lives!
What factors
Now that we don’t have an incompetent shortshop to crock our starting left-fielders I think Saunders/Langerhans/Hall gives us enough low-cost cover that we should be looking elsewhere to upgrade the team.
Danny Blanchflower Lives!
Good. Now that's settled
let’s take a look at the bullpen and Triunfel’s scouting reports . . .
Saunders has 20/20 potential and plays good defense.
Shiny but not spectacular.
You got slurved!
I for one will not welcome our Robert Overlords burst one open J/M/G!
The bullpen isn't fixed....although it may be in a year or so when Josh Fields and Aumont are ready.

The last paragraph is sarcasm, right?
Since all of those points are demonstrably wrong?

At least he didn't mention the desperate need for at least one more proven veteran.
Nice Guys Finish Third - My semantics are a waste of time.
I like in the Demember '94 article how he talks about Buhner leaving and going to Baltimore in the past tense.
That’s some fine police work there Lou.
Dear Lord Steve Kelley is such an unimaginative boob
I don’t know what’s more baffling: Kelley keeping his job, or Dayton Moore negotiating a contract extension with the Royals.
Danny Blanchflower Lives!
One of my favorites ...
is from the 2004 ALCS …. A-Rod proving he’s a Yankee
Alex did hit a HR the next game, and then pretty much disappeared … well, aside from the ball slap vs Arroyo in game 6.
I thought it was the ball slap that proved he was a Yankee.
Or maybe that proved he was a douche. I can never keep those straight.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.

I like how Kelley gives so much credit to Wak. Like it was Wak who was building the roster.
And Jack is just a guy slowly working on the farm system.
Wak has done a good job, but he isn’t the field manager AND the GM.
I love how
He leaves a space
Between every thought.

Reading that article...
…I tend to think he looks like an aged version of the bad robot dude from Bladerunner.
It has taken me years
to quit typing in a similar manner.
This is a horribly annoying trait of Bill Plaschke's as well
Which the late, great Fire Joe Morgan dutifully harped on.
