Royals Negotiating Contract Extension with Dayton Moore
In news that must be totally crushing to Royals fans - Royals owner David Glass is working out a contract extension for General Manager Dayton Moore. KC Star - No deal yet on contract exension for Moore Because Moore's done so much to show he deserves an extension.
As much as we've complained in the past about Mariners ownership and executives, this does offer pretty sharp relief on a key difference between the Mariners and the Royals executvie and ownership groups. Lincoln and Armstrong eventually realized they had been heading in the wrong direction, and executed a sharp correction. David Glass???? Well what can you possibly say to anyone living east of Grass Creek and west of Springfield. I'm sure that Joe Posanki is finding that Sports Illustrated gig even more appealing right now.
I confess to having mixed feelings about this. On an empathic level, I am aware of - and even grieve a bit for - the suffering Kansas City fans. Our Bavasi nightmare is over - Royals fans are still in the middle of their terror with the worst parts apparently still to come. Long term Royals fans also have an agony Mariners fans never experienced during our years of similar ineptitude, because there was a time when the Royals were one of the best organizations in baseball. In Seattle, well ... all we ever knew was futility.
How much have Royals fans been beaten down, you ask? Well, after the Betancourt trade there were Royals fans who, in all seriousness, defended the trade because Betancourt was an improvement on Tony Peña, Jr. "See", they said, "this is just another example of how Moore is continually taking steps to make the team better". Meanwhile they totally ignored how the Royals simply swapped out the worst shortstop in baseball for the next worst shortstop in baseball, meaning that after the trade the Royals were still the team with the worst shortstop in baseball. Really. Some Royals fans actually said that. That's how far Royals fans have to reach to find good things to say about the Royals organization, sometimes.
The other side of my feelings is a feeling of gratitude to Glass for doing such a wonderful thing for smart teams such as the current incarnation of the Mariners. Trades in baseball are facilitated when Team A values something that Team B doesn't value, and vice versa. And I know that as long as Moore believes that the Mariners are currently undervaluing character, grit, and veteran leadership, and greatly overvaluing skills such as on-base percentage and defense, well ... there's fertile trade opportunities there. The Mariners challenge will be to fend off teams such as Boston and Tampa when dealing with the Royals for the few valuable pieces that might be available.

Good post
I have a good friend who is a KC fan and I’ve repeatedly had to send him an email of condolence when the latest crappy, ex-Mariner joined his team. I’m mostly on the “feeling sorry for them” side of the divide you’re talking about. I’d really rather see us swindle teams like the Mets, Dodgers, Yankees and Red Sox. Of course, most of those teams are now run by pretty smart people.
So, um, have we called the Mets lately?

I still want to see the Royals turn it around.
I think baseball organizations still vary in intelligence and resources without having anymore “Bill Bavasi” or “Dayton Moore” types running around. Sadly, the Royals organization doesn’t appear to be reaching a breaking point like the previous Mariners org did (“Introducing….THE HOT SEAT!”). And “The Process” that Moore talks about is rather scary for the Royals if they’re buying into it. That’s going to be an excuse to give Moore several more years to “turn things around”.
Yuck.

I honesty believe the Royals are the farthest team from contending.
I think the Nats are closer than most people think. The Pirates have made good moves for over a year now. The Royals are weak all over.

Tony Pena Jr turns into Yuni?
Maybe Dayton Moore is modeling his rebuild off this guy:
Man Trades Paperclip for House
I had a similar strategy in my Triple Play 99 season.

What?

We were a pretty damn good organization during the years 1994-2003. The only difference between us and the Royals is that we have never won a World Series. We were big disappointments a couple of times, but that doesn’t make those seasons futile.
I’m excited the Mariners are heading in the right direction again. I have empathy for the Royals and their situation because we just went through it with Bavasi. At the same time, though, GM’s like Dayton Moore gives opportunity to other GM’s like Jack Zduriencik. And until we win a World Series, I have no mercy for the way other teams are trending.

The Mariners under Woody Woodward were not a damn good organization.
Woodward was the proverbial blind squirrel who found some acorns. The acorns formed a good team, and were the core for an outstanding team, but the Mariners under Woodward were unable to build that core into an outstanding team.
Gillick built some very good teams, but did a horrible job of creating a pipeline of young talent to sustain the success. Good organizations create a foundation for long-term success. IMHO, the Mariners under Gillick cannot be classed as a damn good organization.
In contrast, the Royals had an exended period when they were one the top franchises, having success both on the field and in sustaining a flow of young talent. Seattle has yet to come anywhere near the level of success the Royals have enjoyed in the past.

I can imagine
However, the pipeline for terrible and/or overrated Mariners stays open for the time being

But the longer Z runs the M's, the better the Mariner cast-offs will become.
The Royals should be getting better soon!
What're ya gonna do with those pies, boys?

I hate probably about half of all baseball teams, at least AL ones.
The Royals are one of those teams that I hate, for no reason.

Just collecting up the shitty seasons
To make the 10 year, 4 World Series dynasty from 2012-2022 all the more sweet
Phase 1: Assemble expensive, below average players
Phase 2: ?
Phase 3: CHAMPIONSHIP!

I thought Dayton Moore was OK, until this past off-season.
The collection of “talent” he got through free agency and trades was just deplorable. It was much like the Yuni trade … barely upgrades that didn’t really make the team much better.

I liked this line
Meanwhile they totally ignored how the Royals simply swapped out the worst shortstop in baseball for the next worst shortstop in baseball, meaning that after the trade the Royals were still the team with the worst shortstop in baseball. Really.
Smoltz.
