Agreed, but Sweeney isn't going anywhere at this point.
I’d have preferred Olson being sent down but eh.

Irrelevant
Shelton wasn’t a part of the future and optimal roster construction is no longer an issue.

Yes but I was waiting for a picture of Chris Shelton and Jack Wilson standing side by side

You'd probably get a castle and a bevy of comely lasses of virtue true though so there's that.

Yes because if the middle ages valued anything it was twelve year old lesbians with superior intellect

Meh...like Jeff said, it doesn't really matter, but for the love of God why not Sweeney?
by kentcheesehead on Aug 1, 2009 2:28 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
At this point it would be 100% impossible for the front office to cut Sweeney and get away with it
There’s no point. The roster construction doesn’t matter anymore, and the players would never understand.
by Jeff Sullivan on Aug 1, 2009 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wait, what? Roster construction doesn't matter anymore?
I know we’re no longer in the race, but that shouldn’t be an excuse for the team to make stupid decisions.

Chris Shelton is a better baseball player than Mike Sweeney.

A little tiny bit.
Sweeney is beloved by the rest of the team and the front office believes that it is important to have high character veterans around. I don’t know if I agree, but since it’s such an unimportant roster spot I’m not going to complain about it.
by acblue on Aug 1, 2009 6:08 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
If Mike Sweeney were a real team player, he'd realize that his roster spot should belong to a superior player.
If he were a real nice guy who wanted to remain with the team, he’d retire, and then put in an application for clubhouse attendant or batboy or something. That way he can still babysit and give hugs.
Otherwise, he’s useless.

The difference between Sweeney and Shelton the rest of this season is about two and a half runs.
That’s not worth pissing off the media, the fans or the rest of the team. Shelton probably should have been here from the start but he wasn’t and it’s just not an important roster spot. This is a blind spot (if it even is; I think it’s somewhat debatable) that I think I can live with.
by acblue on Aug 1, 2009 8:24 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
If Shelton were an even halfway decent prospect, I would think differently
but casting him away just doesn’t matter. At all.
by Jeff Sullivan on Aug 1, 2009 9:23 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'd still rather see him get at bats over Sweeney.

Following this logic, trading Jarrod Washburn was also a bad idea
by Graham on Aug 1, 2009 7:56 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
No it doesn't.
Trading Jarrod Washburn wasn’t a stupid decision.

If you don't see the parrallels I don't know what to tell you
It is clear that maximising wins for the 2009 team is no longer relevant. Why complain about it, then? It’s not like it’s going to lead the front office into bad habits.

Washburn brought us stuff for the future
by Jeff Sullivan on Aug 2, 2009 11:05 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Right, but trading him probably made the team worse in the now
it all goes down to cost/benefit. Is the cost of keeping Sweeney over Shelton high enough to outweigh the benefits of keeping Sweeney over Shelton?
In this case, there is zero cost and therefore the benefits, intangible as they are, win the day.

With Snell up, Sweeney hugs are going to be more valuable than ever.
It really won’t make that much of a difference.
by I Lick Squirrels on Aug 1, 2009 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Oh man. Will Sweeney try to hug Snell?
If he does, I hope it’s televised. I wouldn’t be surprised by anything from grudging acceptance to a total snub to a punch in the face.
My prediction: Sweeney will go in for the hug and Snell will respond by looking at him like he’s crazy and walking away. Sweeney will then run after him, catch him from behind, and lock him up in a serious hug. For one excruciating moment, Ian Snell will look like his head’s about to explode, then he’ll collapse into tears at which point he and Mike will have a long, in depth conversation over the course of which all of Ian Snell’s psychological issues are resolved and he’ll go on to be the solid #2 starter we all know he can be. But I’m mostly just guessing. What do you guys think?
by DAMellen on Aug 1, 2009 3:36 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think he'll explode and Sweeney will choke on his guts.

Bollucks.
Stupid sentimental reasons for keeping Sweeney.

I think they should've sent down Kelley.
I guess I haven’t really analyzed his core numbers, but he seems really off right now. I think it might do him some good to spend a little time in AAA getting his shit together. Or I would’ve dumped Batista. Regardless, letting Shelton go is a mistake. It’s not a big enough move to be a huge mistake, but it’s a mistake nonetheless.
