OH DEAR LORD
I was looking for exactly this gif for so long. If you made this, I thank you. I’m sure I will be stealing it in the future.
angels fan in seattle
But the second one is so much better.
Until they give up 10 runs and we wonder why and make excuses.
I actually bought a Betancourt t-shirt.
Not enough veteran leadership.

The second one is an illusion
and claiming you got your arms stuck in two separate vending machines makes for a shitty excuse.
Man the rotation has really gone to seed without Bedard
and with Morrow getting schooled (as in learning). Jesus, they were at 28 pRAA after one month and now… Sic transit gloria mundi.

Thank you for this.
I’ve grown tired of Dave Sims talking about how they’re the best bullpen in the AL.
Considering the fact that Sims has mentioned both Hardball Times and Fangraphs on air
I would argue that he knows exactly what the bullpen is.
Well the pen doesn't look as bad by THT/Fangrraphs' metrics
It doesn’t look awesome, mind you, but it only really looks deeply shitty in tRA.
It's worse than that, since we've had good results so far, we're just waiting for the other shoe to drop
at least with Ayala and Slocum we came into their appearances with low expectations.
What a wonderful idea for a gif
I would have never ever thought of using it in the same context as the Mariners. You sure are a original that is truly full of new ideas around every corner. I tip my cap to you.

I have a question about numbers
I’m going to definitely come off very amatuerish (as if that hasn’t already happened) but I really want to understand the numbers.
If the Hitting is a -48.2 and the Bullpen is a -15.1 does that mean that our hitting department is three times worse than the Bullpen or do the numbers not really correlate that way because hitters are playing much much more than the bullpen guys are working?

As far as I know, it means team runs below the average major league offense/pitching/defense over the course of the current season (approximately 83 games so far) in this context.
But you’d want to get a second opinion on that. Also, 28th = 28th in the majors, etc.
They don't really correlate that way
but it would be fair to say that the hitting has hurt us three times as much as the bullpen, which is similar but different.

Of course, this doesn't account for leverage, and the bullpen throws a lot of important innings
by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 8, 2009 1:52 PM PDT up reply actions
And it may be going too far to say that the bullpen has 'hurt' us at all
given the whole disconnect between RA and tRA that gave rise to this post.
The way they’re pitching should have resulted in X or something… I think people will just point to the pen’s RA, or to the pen’s WPA for that matter and say that it’s been a strength.
This is a stupid semantic argument about what we really mean by ‘hurt’ in that sentence. Never mind.
(Though I’d guess the wOBA/bRAA number correlates to runs scored a lot better than pRAA correlates to RA).
You're right though
how about this: the run value of the offense’s performance to date has been three times more below average than that of the bullpen.
Boy this is clunky. Both units have sucked.
